[Music] this is a private in-home session with a people reactive aggressive dog i don't do a lot of private sessions anymore but occasionally i do them and i wanted to make one for you guys so that you can see an in-home session so there's gonna be five strategies that you're gonna learn in this video every in-home session is different okay the people are different the home's different the dog's problems are always different he's barking right now you can hear him barking at me from over there okay this dog is not the worst dog ever by any means but he would bite somebody and you're gonna see that in a minute okay so here's the five strategies that i'm gonna explain to you he's barking too loud i we gotta talk so i close the door here's the five strategies you're gonna see one of them doesn't work at all and then three work and then one kind of works five years old and so if you have a dog like this you've got to figure out which strategy is best for you so here's the strategies that i'm going to talk you through during this session okay mommy's the boss that's a strategy there's no messing around around mom okay we're gonna i'm gonna show that's the one that doesn't work and i'm gonna show you why that doesn't work in a minute mommy's the boss it often works doesn't work here okay not cause her fault but just because all right here's another one reinforcement from the scary stimulus as i call it that's a big one that's my main go-to one and it works here okay it's also pretty easy for you or clients to implement right reinforcement from the scary stimulus me being the scary stimulus okay mental stimulation slash life variability so your dog lives within its four walls maybe it goes on walks we need more than that okay the next one's real world scenarios so i'm going to go through real world scenarios when we got to get the dog a little better and then the last one is dominance all right door opens and i'm going to talk you through all these strategies this is the mommy's the boss time okay she's over it i tell her what to do shake my hand this is a good thing for you guys to do the dogs don't always know that you have accepted this person into your life he actually starts whining right when we start shaking hands oh but it might be a protection troll well then the dog's the worst judge of character i've ever seen because mommy is totally comfortable so we got to train the dog to be comfortable too so i'm talking to her about what she's going to do when he barks right the mommy's the boss strategy and i tell her you are going to give a cue whether it's quiet or ah or no right she does it right there it doesn't really work but she needs to now start touching him at the base of his neck where his head meets his neck now what i want you to see is that move right there that move right there he doesn't care and this last one he's gonna look at her bad right there he doesn't nip her but for the first time she's like oh that wasn't great now that's not her fault he's all worked up he's not gonna bite her but he's also being that's not cool and i'm like that's not cool of him at all but we're also during this session not willing to fight this battle he's all worked up in this room this is the room he gets put in and he's he kind of went at her hand a little bit so we are going to take mommy's the boss strategy off the table that can fix a lot of dogs the dog's ears pin and they go oh mom i never knew i couldn't do that i didn't realize that and we're that's a big part of the solution it ain't a big part of the solution because you can't go into a client's home and the client get bit you tell them to do something and the dog bites the clients like the worst thing ever so we've got to move on from that so we know that he's got this attitude he's willing to tell mom i'm basically saying right now what he should be doing when mom says knock it off his ears should be pinning and she'd be like oh my gosh okay mom you're the boss now she's got some things to work on other aspects of her life to get that better okay we shake hands again at this point after two handshakes him barking at me is totally unacceptable it's not unacceptable before the handshakes i get that a dog gets confused but now that mommy has has established it's not cool anymore to bark at this guy because the bosses have let this guy into the house this guy being me all right now we're moving on to reinforcement from the scary stimulus i do this all the time i love it it's so big it does not work if it's look at that right there lips really curled really barking i'm not gonna flinch though he gets a reaction out of everybody when he barks like that okay i'm not flinching though he's gonna do another big one and i'm moving closer i'm moving closer i don't care how many uh treats i give i'll give treats all day tail wagging right there i'm moving closer he's going to have a freak out here in a minute i'm also staring at him right in the eye i'm like trying a dominance thing i'm seeing if it'll work i reinforced him right when he looked away at that point i'm going behind him so i can creep in a little closer he's look at it andy's gonna have a pretty big freak out here in a minute um but you can't do too many treats you or me or a a guest coming over when your dog barks at the guest that guest has nothing to offer the dog we are now giving something tangible something the dog likes his freakout's gonna happen so i keep saying he's gonna have it i think it's right here treats give a tangible right there that's the worst one treats give a tangible reinforcement a guest petting him he doesn't care he doesn't care about anything treats are tangible you can control it you know they like it if they don't like it drop their food or drop their base diet so they like it okay this i didn't back up because he grew out i backed up because we need to move on okay he's coming out on leash now the other thing is getting him out of those rooms think about the history of that room he goes in the room people come over there's a history back in a corner room of being bad let's get him out there let's get him out let's make this like a normal situation in life okay she's got the leash i'm not terribly worried if she does something i told her what to do you're gonna give this guy correction you're gonna put him in a seat in a sit we're over it if he does anything bad now she's not gonna have to touch him because he's on the leash so now and we're continuing the reinforcement now on the leash she can give him a good pop should she give him a pop absolutely she could get should give him a pop she has accepted me she's shaking my hand this dog cannot your dog cannot be mean and growl and lunge at people anymore is this dog terrified no this dog's not terrified he decided he feels like i should leave doesn't matter what he feels like happening he doesn't run this house her and her husband run this house all right we're gonna put a muzzle on and get to the next thing which is mental stimulation and life variability okay so what does that mean that means he needs to meet another dog how is dog meeting another dog gonna help aggression with guests here's how it is dogs need new experiences in life kids need new experiences in life they can't just stay in the house stay in a yard occasionally go on a walk she actually goes on five walks a week which i was surprised to hear um but what about meeting a dog at his own house that's great it's gonna trip him out he's just gonna be like oh my god the dog's never come over and i've met and it's just gonna add excitement to his life so that the guest coming in isn't the most exciting and crazy thing that's that happened to him in a given day or a given week she said he's good with dogs he's not great with dogs now it's at his house and everything but prince isn't too worried prince is perked up he is going to go a prince because that's where he's got a muzzle on a little bit when prince goes in for the smell and princess backs up princess cool with it defusing the situation i don't even give him a correction he's on a muzzle he's not going to hurt prince all right so that's mental stimulation and life variability now mental stimulation to a lot of trainers is oh train them tricks yeah well tricks are still in the house forget the house it's well meeting prince was in the house but it was at least super different and stimulating tricks don't do that that's why i didn't want to tell you just mental stimulation it's not a mental stimul not about mental stimulation it's life variability okay meeting of dogs is the best one for dogs that don't meet a lot of dogs all right now he's off the muzzle i am relatively comfortable with him or i would not have taken a muzzle off these herding breeds they have these quick bites right you got to be careful they have these snappy super quick bites that can get you and get you good all right so i got to be careful he needs to be reinforced in that room more well you cannot do enough of the reinforcements from the scary stimulus so i'm going to walk right up to him and i'm going to treat him and now what i'm going to do is go outside knock on the door come in to walk rock directly up to him reinforce him now we're onto real world scenarios i'm a knock she's got to get the door like a normal guest i walk in you might say joel well he knows you well yeah but still that doorbell the knock mom going to get the door will still trigger a dog even though they know me so now i'm just like he's tripped out he's like oh it was the door but it was a guy new and then the guy walked up the guy gave me treats then they start to generalize and you do this with a real guest knock on the door guest comes in guest tosses treats and the dog is like oh yeah that's what that guy did the other day who was here so we're doing real world scenarios now yes he knows me this still has an impression on their brain though and i'm going to keep doing it i just keep going out knocking on the door she keeps getting the door i keep walking in with confidence and hand feeding the dog and so the knock and the human being appearing all of a sudden means something different to this dog before the knock mom getting the door human being appearing was a trigger for freak out you want it to become a trigger for treats okay now it's a trigger for treats then i tell the camera person to do the same thing okay i've done it a bunch we need the camera person to do it now because it's a new person yes he's desensitized to the camera person but can't do it enough cannot do this enough walks in and she's going to toss treats because she really hadn't given treats before and perfect the new stimulus of the door knock and mom getting the door is now one of hey treat guy is gonna come in so now we're gonna start talking i cut out a lot of the talking um he loves balls it's kind of a good distraction but it's almost too much of a of a distraction we want to deal with the problem we don't just want to give him a ball to chew the whole time all right now she needs to build some confidence too off muzzle right he wouldn't prince a little bit but he didn't look like he was gonna bite so off muzzle she needs to build the confidence of having him meet anoth a dog on the leash plus it's just more mental stimulation and life stuff of meeting another dog it's only good okay it's only a good thing this guy's gonna come into the house and be like that was a crazy day they did this this crazy guy came in and gave me treats and this dog was in the backyard then someone shows up tomorrow this dog had been taken out of his comfort zone that's probably even a better way to put mental stimulation and life variability is taking the dog out of its comfort zone they feel like they have everything figured out people come over they bark mom gets mad or mom doesn't do anything and then person leaves i did my job whatever they think it's enough we gotta we gotta shake up their world a little bit a dog a big male dog coming in their backyard is shake shaking up his world a little bit so that someone coming over is not the most exciting thing happening in his life all right we're now back inside what am i doing here okay so final step is taking this dog off leash with me so we are now to a normal what they want right a guest to be able to come over and go through a process that is that is kind of like my process but much a quicker right how do we speed up so what did we do today we did a lot of reinforcement we did um we tried a lot of things now how do we speed up that process for an actual human being coming over so here's what i tell her i tell her her husband need to have him on a leash out of that room when people come over those people need to come in they need to reinforce this dog we know the reinforcement so what worked today two two main things worked desensitization and reinforcement coupled with the the real world or meeting of prince um stuff like that but the main thing that was desensitization and reinforcement from the person so i'm telling her what to do when someone comes in so her husband need to have him on a leash now this is some i don't want to call it dominant stuff it's basic obedience but it's enough it's enough getting up because you feel like getting up oh camera person's tossing treats but she's camera person is going to go out and then come back in this is essentially what they need to be doing because we got to get him out of the room okay he can't be in that room anymore it's just it's it's not a great place there's too much of a history of him being quote unquote bad in that room so i'm giving you corrections tony sits his little butt down it's enough doing what you want to do in life you're the one growling and being mean to people okay maybe she doesn't go out the door i don't totally remember but treats from the guest then the guest comes up oh hand feed a treat because we know that the that he's going to be good with the camera person i would not recommend hand feeding a treat for from a guest right away but the dog needs to be sitting there and be somewhat good if he gets up give him a correction back into a sit we're over it and then you can start to bring him in the house guests can feed treats and then we can take this guy off leash he's not terrible by any means right but we have to do a shortened process of what my hour-long session was and what worked and then we have to shorten that process all right so he's a pretty good boy but i think you get it i think you guys understand the process okay guys let me hear what you have to say um this is the first in-home session i've done since youtube has gotten so popular um everyone's just coming to my facility i'm not driving around going to people's homes like i did for 10 years but this person lives close i did it i will do some in-home sessions for the right situation okay that's got to be the right situation so if you want to contact me possibly do an in-home you have to live close san diego county um and live kind of close to me and then i can do it house gotta be clean we gotta uh uh bringing bring camera person in the whole deal but contact me if you want something like that to happen like subscribe and um comment that's it um
