[Music] 50 years to get to this exact room at this exact time we've got to play the impetus to get to the hundredths that's what we've got to do it's the next chapter in the doctor's life and it starts here I'm David and I play the doctor there's something hugely exciting and thrilling about being part of a line that stretches back through time there's a special handshake yeah we can't you know no no no because we will in the end the notion this was actually going to happen and that there was a script and a story and a plan notably recently actually I've known for ages we just used to lie as they tell us to by the way not just because we're horrible mean people fazio we can ancient Mesopotamia followed by future Mars on the new we know we're taking off the engines aren't going we shot in the middle of Trafalgar Square and I went up 90 foot so I saw all over London just one of the rare brilliant things that you get with who he was harnessed up and was swinging it was knocked himself out which I think's on camera which they might use with the telephone as well but the fact is what if you hang up police box from a crane the middle Trafalgar Square people can kind of figure out what sure you're doing that's that's gonna be doctor who isn't it can be much more public I scripted in the idea that the world on lookers being held behind barriers because I knew there would be a National Gallery today they are entering one of the small other still spacious display rooms he's illuminated by a skylight at the end of the door another painting this one of Queen Elizabeth the first there's a figure standing next to it Elizabeth the first you knew her that long I took a big nervy risk I and I don't suppose I've ever had such a difficult demanding frustrating script to write but I'm very pleased with where we end at home that's the creature it's an unusual situation of course because there is this slight quirk in the history of Doctor Who there because it's about time travel you're in a situation work this is not my day job anymore but I get to put the suit on and have another go he's a bit like Hamlet there are all these great actors that have been before you but you've got to give your take you've got to give you a version of this alien Time Lord Oh this is where I come in Geronimo is proper skinny I've never seen it from the outside it's like a special effect it's like a matchstick man in the read-through was really excited to hear what it sounded we know what the script sounded like they're completely different yet both of them are the doctor that's peculiar to Doctor Who that multiple versions of this character can exist alongside each other it's sort of territorial machoism yeah interest in much bigger screwdriver than I really do compensating what regeneration it's a lottery hello he's cool isn't he cool I'm the doctor and I'm all cool oops I'm wearing Sancho's I mean potentially it could have been quite difficult but it I think that's down to you because it's you because it's your dick you would have had had every right to be uncomfortable about me turning up muscling in on the action I don't know really because I think I think particularly with the 50th it's about the show and the lake you know that word again medicine what are you doing here I'm physic busy oh I see that's what we're calling is it hello ladies don't start what you get up to in the privacy of your own regeneration is your business I'm not the missus I got I'm not judging you can see clearly that they are playing the same person but they are so different and in fact all they do is kind of complement each other and they work so well together so again it's kind of an the rarity of this show they're both so completely the doctor and yet there they are standing on screen together and it's quite eye twisting to see it one of those was a cycle yeah big red rubbery thing covered in suckers yeah venom sacs in the top I'm getting the point thank you nice I don't seem to get on quite well I think they do only bicker a bit yeah but it's quite but I think they quite as if I enjoy each other's very presence who are you talking to myself they're quite excited to see another actor right in front of them facing the same dialogue in the same park I think idea of having three doctors in one episode is always going to go how they're gonna get on and the actors gonna be alright together but I think I think you've got to put your own ego to one side and go it's about the show and it's about the fans you know what they want to see they want to see number 10 and number 11 and they want to see John Hurt someone who would have been one of the great doctors over the years I have to make up my mind whether I'm going to do it but it very quickly and I said yes I didn't really have any time to prepare it her and I think I felt that it's you know I can't give this a Miss also I think both the boys are fabulous I really do I think they are ace or what they do that Dad oh good afternoon I'm looking for the doctor well you've certainly come to the right place he's just one of these people you just want to you know you want to mine him for all his knowledge and that voice yeah oh it's like yeah it's like chocolate and treacle and yeah sex yeah together yeah well this has all the makings of your lucky day in the dungeon cells tenth doctors pacing talking zones favela oh we might as well get started help to pass the time ey me you have to talk like children what didn't emotion so ashamed of being a grown-up must be really recent to you this time the last day they killed the day we children same thing though the thing that interested me about the time war actually wasn't the time war itself to be honest it's a big war nobody spaceship something I love all that but that's not particularly Doctor Who you see a bit of that but that's not the thing the thing always fascinates Omar is he he commits genocide off-screen I think it's a very exciting notion for the fans because it's one of the mythologies of the show and I think it's quite an interesting myth in the show to explore that great war can you ever count can't what how many children there were on Gallifrey that day I have absolutely no idea off-screen echoes and he burns up all the Time Lords and you think okay that's fine he's burning out all those evil the High Council Time Lord and I and our kids on Gallifrey - there's innocent people Oh hundred years older than me and in all that time you've never even wondered how many there were you never once counted tell me what would be the point they both have to kind of turn and look their past squarely in the eye which is not something either of them are particularly comfortable in doing two point four seven billion you did count you forgot 400 years that will it take I moved on where are you now that you can forget something like that boilers once I would like to know where I'm going no you really wouldn't my doctor comes from a time after the time war and my doctor's experience of it even within this stories is a retrospective one looking back on things that he may or may not have done and dealing with things that he may or may not have done where she's which is the theme of the 50th what sort of man was he when he did that and how was it and all that so that's not that's what we've got endemicity not so much term war itself as as the extraordinary decision that we see him reject every other moment of his life that he takes that day and it has come to define him I think I think what's so exciting about it and it's so exciting about Steven scripters is that you know it offers up so many possibilities of the is basically imagine going inside the doctors head but all of this is played out loud there's something funny that I miss our funny thing sorry it just occurred to me this is what I'm like when I'm alone I know either of you I haven't got the faintest idea there you there won't you become a few destroy Gallifrey well the things that most entreat me but Rose was the whole fact that she's also bad wolf and she also had that insider so in a way is the bad wolf edition of Rose the man who regrets and the man who forgets I was very nervous about coming back and then terrifying being in the space that suddenly belongs to other people the moment is coming the moment is me you have to decide if she's a very kind of sophisticated piece of equipment a bit more well managed their first time I didn't want to add to or interfere with or confuse Russell's ending with Rose so I was nerve-racking but I felt it was my duty to try and get what the what people I thought would probably want I will be right back the 10th doctor races for his console the 11th doctor follows my carrying the silver spiritus I'm working on a phase he grows out of it don't you listen to them I think I think the three of them would want to find out how they function together but also then you know suddenly we're in the eleventh Doctor's TARDIS and so a not very politely offered to David is that you can drive if you like you know you know we have these descriptions on the search absolutely jealous of of Matt's TARDIS I think it's a wonderful piece of work it's a complete set this is the silver main power economy so it's a huge challenge for the design department and the camera department you know it takes a lot of technical prowess and skill when I was thinking of this the Hadron Collider was just about finished and wonderful photographs from the papers and I thought well if doctor who saw that he'd want bit of that oh I did love my TARDIS they'll feel like weeks later disloyal there we're going to the National Gallery these icons are underneath it no unit HQ they followed us there in the black archive with a show like this I mean even dissecting the script there really is so much detail there we go into the black archive it's going to have lots of kind of props and pictures and all sorts of things from all of their past and really popular episodes and it's kind of something for the fans to freeze-frame the geeks have inherited the world I love it I absolutely love it we've won the little virgin fire and fries as far as a stereo pierced you know what no no no what tell me what you told me you wiped out your own people it's just I never pictured you doing it that's all take a closer look what's happening nothing it's a projection it's a reality around you that lovely man one day one day he did that and he seems pretty much the same after as he was before us what really happened that day there isn't anything we can do right there isn't another way there never was either I destroy my own people or let the universe burn hero are you ready for them yes maybe yes tell me we've got enough warriors any old idiot can be here well then what can I do what do you think what you've always done [Music] be a doctor come on although is it that terrible Armada of Dalek ships and their dreadful energy means hammering at a planet but then other things are spending among them zooming closer to us at first it's not clear what they are and then gloriously it is all the other tortoises are flying towards the screen I didn't know when I was well off all 12 of them no sir but all 13 sir the Daleks know something's happened they're increasing their firepower on the genetic basis of the display starting to believe under this press do it doctor just do it do it [Music] see oh for God's sake Gallifrey stands one of the clever things that Stephens done in writing the scriptures is it is a celebration of 50 years of Doctor Who but actually it's moving the whole Doctor Who legend forward in quite a dramatic and a fundamental way he's like a seismic shift in the doctor story which maybe that's the proper way to celebrate 50 years to keep the character moving forward we need a new destination because I don't want to go when you move on you won't know about this yet young man but let me tell you yes the point becomes a point where you have to leave yeah and it's it's peculiar because then of course you realize no dispensable you are yeah because the shoe is bigger than all of us and that goes on it goes on I think in 50 years time it will be around it will still be going will be on the 28th doctor but it will be the same show it'll be completely different everything will be different about there'll be a a different person playing the doctor and different way we different companions Nihal new fantastic monsters and scary ideas but if you boil it right down to what really matters in it it will be exactly the same as it always has been
