here tonight that dwight gooden will be a star here in his first appearance in a major league uniform last year he won 19 and lost only four while pitching in class a ball he is trying to make an awfully big chance he doesn't uh he doesn't appear to get that nervous too often fastball struck him odd so dwight gooden gets his first major league strikeout he had 300 of them last year at lynchburg all right yes sir julia serving of course curveball gets mumphrey 2-2 curveball and the second strikeout for dwight gooden jack morris a man that did it for detroit against the white sox swinging a miss he gets ray knight third strikeout for dwight gooden her chance to steal swing and a miss he got him fourth strikeout for dwight goodman swinging a miss he got him oh what two strikeouts they were first the pitcher bob nipper and now during the second baseman and he gets him with a fastball a high fastball and a perfect spot and dorne just tied up on the ball he just did not have a chance that is the high rider my friend i'll tell you goodin likes to be called doc goes back to his basketball playing days doc or doctor three balls two strikes strike three first a miss he got him tough assignment to pinch hit against the guy throwing as hard as dwight gooden ninth strikeout for goodin basketball punched him right on out of there 11th strikeout for dwight cornfield or something close to that tipped into carter's glove strike three number five for dwight gooden who has now retired eight in a row the last three consecutive via strikeouts right here the gets that high cheese by glenn wilson and now with 53 strikeouts gooden leads the national league over jose de leon of pittsburgh and fernando valenzuela of los angeles by two luis suguayo 0 for one that has kept seen sparing action he saw some action on that fastball 11 strikeouts for dwight gooden two out [Applause] well the doctor continues as he did last season to appear to get stronger as the game goes along here's juan samwell he has struck out three times 11 strikeouts for goodin swing and a miss owen won that 11 straight fastball is high one and one in that game on a buck in the eighth inning swinging a miss one and two [Applause] swing and a missed 12th strikeout for dwight kedden fans are on their feet [Applause] no runs one hit only the second of the ball game there's that baker's dozen they can put the 13th k up in k corner [Applause] he keeps doing this he's going to make a lot of dough too strikeout number 13 and five in a row for dwight gooden man what a talent and another curveball got him looking oh and two aspire fastball got him looking [Applause] 25 times in his career curveball got him he struck out the side no balls and two strikes to ray fonnano with one out on the bases loaded another fastball that's five strikeouts for dwight gooden there you can see where he ranks in the lead way out in front hang another k curveball got him looking fastball got strikeouts could we see that again or we run out of time what a way with the crowd roaring you'd expect the adrenaline pumping that he would come with the bullet and instead the big slow jug strike three called and again the two strike pitch curveball did he swing and he did so youngblood struck out on the half swing gooden works to bob brindley and he goes to the curveball and that's strikeout number two god hit his two off of bob force he's against the cardinals one and two to dan gladden got him with a fastball for the first time tonight goodin uses his fastball as his terminating pitch four strikeouts and one out here in the third and all four strikeouts have been on pitches out of the strike zone this one down below the knees and dykstra played at strawberry and johnson in the second got him with a fastball first inning big curveball strikeout number six four strikeouts last year 214. the curveball punches out youngblood on three pitches joel is out of there and gooden has struck out seven young blood with some words for home plate umpire bob engle four balls and two strikes and they're threatening to strike out the side and does 200 strikeouts for dwight gooden and the 27th time in his young career that he has struck out the side in a ball game he now has eight tonight and as you said ralph 200 even on the season who cares on that breaking ball 13th strikeout for dwight gooden one out here in the seventh breaking ball got him strikeout number 14 for dwight gooden [Applause] that ties his high for the year and they have both been against the san francisco giants did he get him yes says first base umpire dave pallone strikeout number 15 for the doctor it is a new high this season for goodness [Applause] dwight gooden has struck out 16 to tie his career high he has won his 13th game in a row it is his 13th complete game and sixth shutout of the year his record is now 19 and three what a great player he became and strike three as youngston follows the problem that tim pointed out swinging in another pitch out of the strike zone white goodness each alive up here then a curveball for strike three and the curveball leaves him at home playing so two
