extreme trends presents a doctor finds something growing inside a baby's belly and spots the same thing inside of its twin before we begin do us a favor and click that like button also subscribe to our Channel and click the notification Bell to be inspired by these heartwarming stories every day learning you're expecting the baby is a wonderful surprise and a daunting one parents to be are eager to meet their little one and hopeful that they will be healthy happy and strong finding out that you're having twins is even more nerve-wracking it's a roller coaster ride where future parents are both doubly excited and doubly scared at the same time the joy of expecting is multiplied but so are the worries about the pregnancy and the health of your unborn child Michigan parents ELISA and Michael Dunn know this firsthand several years ago the couple got a double dose of terrible news they learned that both of their identical twins were born with a rare cancer and that the cancer appeared to have been passed from one daughter to the other in the womb in the early morning of July 4th 2007 ELISA and Michael Dunn welcomed twin girls Madeline and Isabella into their family the girls were 5 pounds 12 ounces and 5 pounds 8 ounces at birth which is considered a very healthy weight for her multiple birth they were perfect sized little girls ELISA said that because they surprised their parents and arrived on the 4th of July the family called the twins there firecracker babies during a routine check-up the following September their pediatrician noticed Madeline's stomach was swollen Michael recalled that the mood in the room changed as the doctor physically examined her his face changed and both Michael and his wife just knew that it wasn't going to be a normal checkup an ultrasound gave their pediatrician reason to suspect that little Madeline had cancer he sent the family to a local hospital for further testing on the drive to the hospital ELISA and Michael feared for the worst but hoped and prayed for the best though they hoped it would be a routine appointment and that further tests would come back negative deep down inside they worried about their precious little girl the additional tests showed that her enlarged stomach was due to a softball sized tumor on her adrenal gland dr. Jeffrey Taub md faa p of the Children's Hospital of Michigan at the Detroit Medical Center recalls that he and his colleagues had a feeling that something more was wrong and they asked if they could look at Isabella's abdomen to she went for an ultrasound immediately which showed that Isabella had what appeared to be the exact same tumor that Madeline had both twins were diagnosed with stage 4 s neuroblastoma a very rare cancer found in children typically under the age of 1 identical twins developing the same form of cancer at the same time is extremely rare and the chance that both girls would survive was uncertain according to dr. Taub the cancer has apparently grown in Madeline while she was a fetus and then was passed on to her sister their case was extremely rare neuroblastoma starts in the adrenal gland which sits on top of the kidney and it spreads to the other parts of the body because isabella and Madeline are identical twins their blood vessels were connected to each other in the womb which meant that blood cells could pass from one fetus to the other and given their identical DNA Isabella's immune system would not have recognized the cancerous cells from her twin as foreign both twins underwent MRIs which showed that their livers were massively enlarged extremely abnormal and completely filled with tumor cells if only part of the liver had been affected doctors could have removed that portion and take out the tumor but sadly for the girls their cancer was throughout their whole livers sadly the doctors were not certain if either girl would survive dr. Taub said surgery could lead to major complications so the best form of treatment would be chemotherapy but that came with considerable risks as well in children so young the toxicity could lead to scarring developmental delays or worse death the girls were separated for the first chemotherapy treatment and both Madeline and Isabella got really ill after the treatment ELISA and Michael were heartbroken during the second round of chemotherapy the girls were put back together and they seemed to perk up a bit at recognizing their other half they smiled again when they saw each other as the weeks passed both girls improved completing four rounds of chemotherapy before undergoing another MRI in December of 2007 the family got the news just two weeks before Christmas both girls were cancer-free what an amazing gift they have both grown up quite a bit since then and are happy and healthy Alyssa says isabella is very caring and loving and Madeline is full of energy we celebrate every day that they wake up if they're healthy Alyssa says Tom who attended their first birthday bash and is excited to watch them as they grow older says he sees them once a year now for a checkup and a photo of them in his office reminds him every day how special they are patients like Isabella and Madeline are wonderful reminders of why he chose despite the challenges and stress to become an oncologist their story is a fantastic example of what can be achieved it is truly what all pediatric oncologists aim hope and strive for thank you for watching this fantastic story please tap one of the two videos on your screen for another amazing extreme trends story you
