so you've committed to packing carryon Only For an upcoming trip but you're worried about how you're going to get everything you need into just one little bag it can be daunting but it doesn't have to be that way I've been a carry on only Packer for about 10 years now my wife and I once lived out of nothing but carry-on suitcases for 6 months and we've learned a lot of things along the way so in this video I want to share five minimalist packing tips that will help you save space in your carry-on we're going to cover IES I use every time I pack my carry-on bag like how to choose what to bring with you how to actually pack in a way that saves space what not to pack and even the things you might think you need but honestly you should just leave at home first things first before you pick up a single clothing item before you open your bag or start folding anything you need a list without a list you're going to forget something important just make a list of everything that you need for your trip not generic lists like clothes shoes but down to the detail level of phone charger cable color copy of passport reading glasses Etc and then follow the list I'm an experienced traveler okay and I'm not lying every time I don't use a list I forget something just do what works for you you can write it down you can make it in Excel whatever we've made a bunch of different free packing lists one for Europe travel one for long-term travel one for cold weather travel if those would be helpful to you I've linked them below personally I love the trick of doing a test pack and living out of my bag for about a week before the trip it's a great way to realize that I may have left something important off the list now when it comes to what you pack you'll save space by avoiding things that are generally single use the more functions or uses we can get out of what we're packing the better look for shoes that can serve multiple purposes right a pair of kicks that you could dress up or down shoes take up a lot of space especially for guys so if you're struggling with luggage space shoes is one of the first areas I would start I'm a runner so I'm always in a bit of a conundrum here I need my daily driver kind of shoes I might want something that could work at a nice dinner I want to bring my running shoes but gosh do I really need three pairs of shoes for this trip so you got to find something that could serve multiple purposes then I would choose lightweight Tech and travel gear that it's good for more than one thing and in general clothing is going to take up the most space so here are a few principles to consider in regards to clothing regardless of destination or season first plan to dress in layers this allows you to pack less and it saves Space by avoiding big bulky items I tend to wear pretty basic pieces that can mix and match together some people call that a capsule wardrobe but really the whole idea is that you're just giving yourself more options in terms of outfits and no piece that you're packing only goes with one thing my ultimate clothing hack that helps save space in my suitcase is using Marino wool Marino is great for travelers it's lightweight it's got this nice recoil and elasticity which means it's pretty wrinkle resistant you don't have to spend a whole lot of time ironing the fibers of Marina will naturally Wick moisture away from your skin they're naturally antibacterial and antimicrobial which means you don't stink and you're not going to have to pack as much because Marino can totally be reworn you just hang it up overnight now I'm not telling you to wear the exact same shirt every day but if you include some key pieces of Marino in your wardrobe it's the perfect way to lighten your load so personally on a 10-day trip to Europe I might only pack five shirts and they're all made of Marino wool there's a lot of options out there but my brand of choice is Unbound Marino what I like about Unbound Marino versus the other guys is they are by Travelers for travelers they this awesome fabric Marino wool to make simple classy versatile comfortable pieces with Travelers in mind and I know what you're thinking Nick you're sponsored by these guys how can I trust what you're saying here's the deal friend I've been wearing Unbound Marino for years I've spent my own money on their clothing for years and I wear their clothing whether I'm traveling or not guess what unb Marino is offering an exclusive discount to a way together subscribers you can get 10% off your order using the code a away way together at the link below thank you to Unbound Marino for sponsoring this video now another way to help me pack less is to ensure one of the places on our trip has laundry available we may not always take advantage of it but it's super easy to toss a few pieces in the washer and then hang them up to dry overnight you can even filter your short-term rental searches like on Airbnb for example for if they have a washer or not I wouldn't recommend clicking the drier filter option because that's not super common outside the USA but washers are and you can hang dry no problem hey real quick if you're getting value out of this video I would love it if you'd hit that like button so that YouTube will know to suggest it to other Travelers like you thank you let's talk about packing the bag kitting or compartmentalizing what goes in your bag is a great way to help you stay organized when everything has a home it's easier to pack harder to forget things and it's quicker to access what you need I have three things I kit if you will my clothing toiletries and Tech I use packing cubes for most of the clothing I pack because they make it easy to organize what I bring and group like items together it also adds an extra element of water resistance and if you've got to open your bag in security privacy I'll typically have one Cube for my main tops one for workout gear and one for socks and undies and in my opinion not all packing cubes are created equal personally I think compression packing cubes are the way to to go if you want to save space you put in your items zip up the cube and then there's another zipper that will compress everything you've packed to save space an easy and affordable hack is to use a gallon size Ziploc bag and press all the air out I've done this many many times you could also find the packable or compressable version of certain bulkier items like jackets this packable puffer jacket by Eddie Bower gets pretty small and it packs down into an internal pocket so when it comes to toiletries I'm super basic but I like to find a toiletry bag with some internal organization and a hook a hook is really handy so it can hang up if you bring liquids be prepared at TSA you'll need all the liquids you bring to be under 3.4 o and grouped together in a clear one qu bag for Tech I've done a variety of things from a little cable organizer like this one to a more all-in-one Tech pouch for every single cable charger adapter Etc I might bring this one's by Peak design and it makes for a convenient inflight kit when it comes to how you pack your bag first you want to find the right way to configure things some people roll their clothing some people fold it personally I do both I roll my tops and undies and stuff like that but I fold my pants and shorts I'd say 90% of my clothing goes in packing Cubes but not all of it I've noticed it's more space efficient to lay pants and shorts flat and I'll typically put those in the very bottom of the bag if you you use packing cubes find ones that fit your bag well for example I'm a big fan of these by Eagle Creek for most suitcases but for my Peak design backpack I love the peak design cubes which obviously were meant to live in this ecosystem I would pack things like socks and chargers and other oddly shaped things into your extra shoes if you're packing extra shoes and then face the shoes like they come in a box when you buy them the goal should be to have things tight and secure utilize every nook and cranny of your bag so nothing is Shifting around and your suitcase can close easily I'll also add I try to keep my tech pouch and my toiletry bag in a more accessible easy to reach place this is good for TSA or being able to access my tech in Flight I'd also recommend wearing your bulkiest items on travel days for example the pants that take up the most space in your luggage your biggest pair of shoes just so you don't have to pack them and the final way to save some space when packing is to eliminate unnecessary items and in this video I share 12 things you may think you need for your trip but you just don't there are 12 things that experienced Travelers no longer pack thank you so much for watching happy travels
