one of my favorite things about going off road is that up here in the pacific northwest you can have fun rain or shine if it's muddy whatever let's have fun if it's sunny whatever let's have fun but this idea doesn't apply to moab in the way that i thought it did as you'll see in today's video we do the hardest trail in moab and we do it in the rain and contrary to what some people might think it doesn't make it easier [Music] to dander lifestyle we are going to do pritchett canyon i'm with my friend mike from marlin crawler he's testing out the new rclt you guys all know kelly from muddy beards and my friend andy how's it going so you're going to see a little extra smoke from the tdi tj today if you saw the last video you know that i had a runaway scenario coming out of one of the hot tubs up here and originally it seemed like it was fine it was just a little smoky but i might have more going on inside than i thought originally so i could have a bent valve i'm not sure if it is it's just slightly bent but either way i normally get questions about smoke on d cell it gets a little bit white and then on every other scenario it burns relatively clean so i guess we'll just see as we go through the video either way pritchett canyon is outstanding this is one of my favorite trails here and it people sleep on this trail some people act like it's hardest trail in america which is just not even close to true but other people act like it's a walk in the park and if you if you're really smart in the way you wheel this trail it can be a walk in the park but as you see today you really need to respect this place redrock four-wheelers is the club that manages all the trails here in moab and their rating for this trail is a nine out of ten and i think on a moab scale that is definitely accurate but on national scale i would give this like a seven and a half or so out of ten the reason i wouldn't rate it higher is because realistically the trail is not that hard if you're a decent technical driver the reason that i think this should be rated um as high as it is is only because we've got high consequences for simple mistakes people roll over all the time on this trail and so this is a place that i definitely think that i wouldn't recommend you come here unless you have a whole lot of seat time and a whole lot of experience in your rig but it should be mentioned that in the dry i have personally done this trail on a stock jl on 35 so it's something that definitely can be done with a barely modified vehicle but it's something that shouldn't be done in a heavily modified vehicle with someone who doesn't have a lot of experience all right guys this next line is optional but i think it's a perfect four-wheel drive checker before we get on this on this trail if you've watched many of my other wheeling videos then chances are you know that i like to have a four-wheel drive checker at the beginning of big trails like this right now it's not too late to turn around and if i have a problem with a locker or if i have a shaft that is about to break or something like that it's nice to be able to do one steep obstacle right before i get into a trail just to make sure that everything's working the way it should so this first quote-unquote obstacle is completely optional but i like to do these just to make sure that everything's ready to rock and roll [Music] oh [Music] after a quick confirmation that all of our vehicles are fully functional it's time to move along on this trail this trail is essentially just a series of big obstacles moab is full of obstacles that have names like potato salad hill rocker knocker and hell's gate but pritchett canyon in particular has like seven named obstacles on it and for good reason there's a lot of fun obstacles on this trail it'd be a fun way to spend the day like what we're gonna do here pritchett canyon starts out real mild and it's really big distances between these obstacles but as you go throughout the trail the obstacles become more difficult and they become more frequent [Music] [Music] we just hit chewy hill and i think this is probably the second or third toughest obstacle at pritchett um it's definitely interesting and if you listen it's raining it just started raining on us so i've never uh i've never done this trail wet i've never seen it done wet um i've heard that the water if you get a lot of rain it'll actually make the rocks stickier because it'll wash all the sand and whatnot off of the rocks so i guess today we're gonna get to test that theory i've never had a problem going up chewy hill before i think we're gonna wait for just a couple more minutes let it rain a little bit see if it's gonna let up and then we're just gonna see what we can do all right guys i don't think it's let not anytime soon so uh in order for me to continue to film this it's gonna be a little bit of a interesting situation what i think i'm gonna do is i'll just have to like kelly i might have to have you just like shoot with my camera and my gimbal out of your window if you're cool with that um and then we'll just have to like switch camera to camera just out of windows just to try to keep the gear dry and we'll just push on unless you guys want to turn around but i suspect that we're all here from washington we're all going to want to do the trail real quick i can jump out i've got an umbrella how about that you have an umbrella dude if you have an umbrella that would be a game changer californian has an umbrella i know yeah i definitely don't want to turn around even if we gotta winch up everything i'm down to keep going he has an umbrella what's up guys oh my god mike does have an umbrella dude all right game on i got an umbrella boy i have one sweatshirt so andy also known as cap is going to hold the umbrella for kelly so we can bring you guys a video this is for the camera not for the person not for us yeah we're too manly for umbrellas mother nature has made it very clear that it wants us to do this obstacle wet so there's nothing else we can do except for put it in four low try to be as careful as possible and figure out which route works best in the [Applause] [Music] ring [Music] thank you [Music] um [Music] this obstacle is a little bit frustrating for me because i've never had a problem on it before but i've never done it in the wet and i think that it became clear pretty quickly that i didn't have the wheelbase to do this comfortably and without the extra traction that you usually get in a place like moab this wasn't going to happen for me at least not safely i think we got to pull cable [Applause] [Music] so with a 130 inch long wheelbase and a 580 to one final crawl ratio i definitely felt that mike would have the best shot at this obstacle even in the wet my wheelbase at 103 inches is only five inches longer than kelly's and both of our jeeps act completely different mike's wheelbase is 32 inches longer than kelly's giving him a lot of extra stability and a lot of extra reach so with some good driving and some great tire placement we were able to get mike all the way up so after seeing the taco go up what level of optimism let's talk about the good parts what is good uh that it appears to be drying out a little bit so it's drying out fairly quickly it's not raining anymore like when you were going up it uh i think the wheelbase and uh you know my uh yeah my wheelbase is definitely going to be interview for sure maybe i don't know we'll see i think so too but that doesn't mean you can't do it yeah give it much now that it's drying out i think that you got a good chance plus these are such seasoned tires now yeah for sure i think they're going to really fold well so well we'll see yeah we'll see i'm going to give it a try and be ready to just pull cable when we need to not we're for the pacific northwest you're never too proud to pull cable i'll pull cable all day i don't care me too i'm not too proud [Music] [Applause] kelly spent a little bit of time giving this obstacle his best shot but at the end of the day this is not the hill to die on we still have quite a bit of trail left and there's a few obstacles that in my opinion are much harder than this one so we hooked up his winch we brought him up and it's time for caps to give it a try oh man all right cap you're the last one up this one and it's starting to rain again of course it's starting to rain again level of one to ten what's your optimism uh i'm a seven that's a good healthy number yeah all right well you don't have tacoma wheelbase but you've got the longest wheelbase on all the jeeps i think you got a good shot man no we'll just dry the rocks we'll just yeah right just dry the rocks [Music] got it my [Music] what do you guys think are we committed are we backing out i don't want to go down there though i don't know i mean we're here go down go down in the wet we were worried about the rain and the rains have come so i think we're just in it did it to win it now that's why we have lunches i brought food both of us have that's why us three have winches yes somebody didn't bring there's a class yeah forgot to bring my winch i can't believe i invited a guy no witch i had no idea until he got here and then you realized he was in a toyota and you thought oh that's okay that's oh he's fine he's got toyota that's easy but [Music] the next big obstacle is rocker knocker and for somebody with short wheelbase like me this is probably the most difficult obstacle here there is one other one that is probably sketchier than this one but as far as difficulty and being able to navigate your way up this one's a huge challenge but we've got a couple miles between us and rocker knocker and this section of trail is fantastic [Music] oh [Music] well it just started raining again pretty good it was just starting to dry out too which was amazing i was like sweet we might not have to finish this all wet because now we're actually getting to the hardest stretch of the whole trail it's like the last third or so uh super fun but man it's a whole other ball game whenever you're bringing mud up with you onto these rocks so we're just gonna put we're gonna wait it out for a minute or two see if it slows down if it doesn't you're gonna see us out there with umbrellas it was already going to be ridiculous it was already going to be ridiculous but now it looks really slickery caps has a really good shot because he has all the whoop house yeah i mean i've seen this is not usually i was going to try to make it a crawl obstacle today and i do not think it's going to be a crawl obstacle now i mean it's not it's not sticky not sticky it's not sticky at all but there's a winch point up top that right one is crazy yeah it is this video is where you crab walk and you just go up sideways yeah that's what i've seen people start here come out and angle yeah here and just like walk it this way that'll be my strategy for sure well they try and wake it make it up you go all the way to the left this might not this might be well it would be doable if it wasn't wet yeah i don't know this one yeah yeah and you can't go straight up that face for sure you'd have to go at it sideways and then the out you go out up there right yep right to the right what if you climb up and put card left over and your rear is trying to find yeah this ledge so yeah if you're up where kelly goes this is [Laughter] like a skating rink well and it's so crazy how our our like how we just pick up all that yeah all the wet dirt just sticks to you got like a half inch and that's what the tires are doing they're just bringing dirt onto the rock with them or mud i guess well this will be fun [Music] huh [Music] live your life [Applause] [Music] if you want to you got to give all your heart if you want to be sad [Music] uh sister said now don't you hurt me i come from the place that you brother took [Music] [Applause] you got to give her your heart [Music] after three of us gave it our absolute best in the rain we all had to leave on the hook but we still had hope for cap he hasn't completed it yet he has aired down 42s he has about 500 horsepower there's a lot of reasons why he might still be able to do this even though it's so slippery so he's going to give it his best shot [Music] [Music] so the glass is always half full and even though all four of us have had to winch up rocker knocker this is still just another reason to come back which to me is not a bad thing also the sun is starting to shine again so maybe it'll dry up a little bit and some of these future obstacles that are coming up that are really tough won't have standing water on them well the sun's back out i know right after we all got up unfortunately after we get up rocker knocker it's crazy how fast things start to dry out too it's drying out pretty fast but i'd still be a while before it's sticky again yeah for a couple hours i'm sure for sure but uh well hopefully we can get out of here in the sunshine and not have any more rain storms that'll be nice that was like the third one yeah something like that today so yeah this has been an interesting trail [Music] it has taken me six years to get my friends to come down to moab with me and this trip hasn't exactly gone as planned but i can't help but have this moment of gratitude in this moment where i just feel so happy to be exactly where i am believe it or not while i'm filming this in moab it is the best weather in washington it's insane there's no rain it's like 80 degrees it's record highs and we're down here in the desert in the rain but i still can't help but feel so happy to be here with my friends and even though it's a little bit rainy at least it's not hot and the smell of the rain in the desert is outstanding i just love that smell right after a rain [Music] [Music] we're nearing the end of this thing but this is the most intense section the entire trail we've got like three more named obstacles i think or maybe four it's starting with axel hill and to me this is the sketchiest of all of the obstacles here in terms of rollover prone so there's a change in direction it's kind of steep getting up and then you have to change direction and flex to be able to crest the top and uh the longer wheelbase here is definitely makes you feel a lot more comfortable kelly and i are gonna be riding the struggle bus you're gonna be seeing both front tires from both of us probably but either way we're just gonna go slow and if it gets too sketchy the cool thing about all the obstacles here is there is a winch point at the top so we'll be able to just hook to an anchor and pull ourselves up according to google earth it's about 730 feet between the base of axel hill to the base of yellow hill yellow hill is the last obstacle on pritchett canyon so even though we're less than a thousand feet from the end of this trail our day is far from over axel hill is very time consuming and there's a couple fun sections in between axle hill and yellow hill and then yellow hill is actually pretty steep and sometimes it's tough to get going so depending on how much winching we need in order to get through axle hill that's going to dictate whether or not this is going to be a late night [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] i can tell right away that i have a lot less traction than i usually do on this obstacle and if you look close there's some dry spots there's some wet spots this is definitely a damp rock my strategy here is to turn up the wheel speed a little bit warm these tires and once i start to see them smoke a little i can slow my pace back down and they should slowly start to grip back into this rock [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] well what do you think mr mike he's awesome having a great day you having a great day oh yeah you uh eager to do this one very eager yeah i just watched the jeep go right up it so i gotta do the same er and you don't have a winch so that's right and this jeep doesn't really want to turn around that's right you got all that wheelbase and these tires seem to be hooking up pretty good so i think i think you got this weird let's do it [Music] blue yeah i'm done feeling blue [Music] baby [Music] it can't be overstated just how important a long wheelbase is at a place like pritchett canyon mike made really easy work of this obstacle which is a huge relief for me because i really didn't want to have to winch him up since he doesn't have a winch on this truck but now the mic has made it all the way up to the top it is time for kelly to give it a shot kelly's jeep not only has a short wheelbase but it has really tall gears for being a manual transmission so an obstacle like this in all reality is kind of kelly's worst nightmare since this trip he is going to swap an automatic and lower transfer case gears and you're about to see why [Music] [Applause] since his wheelbase is so short his front end gets really light making it to where most of the load is on the rear axle so in a scenario like this he is kind of four wheel drive the front end is spinning but he can't get enough weight on the front end to help and to make it all worse he doesn't have low enough transfer case gears so it makes it to where whenever he puts it in first gear he's got a lot of wheel speed and he doesn't have a whole lot of that slow control that mike and i have our vehicles and kelly's in particular are all built for the pacific northwest and a short wheelbase is really nice up there and they're still very useful in the vast majority of moab but when you go to trail like pritchett canyon where you have an obstacle like this it really shows the different pros and cons on the different environments that's it right there right we're at a little bit a little bit believe it or not andy's jeep also doesn't have low enough gears but because it's an automatic it has the lowest center of gravity it has 42 inch tall tires and it has the longest wheelbase he has a bunch of forgiveness built in making it much easier to navigate over obstacles like this but as you'll see this still isn't a walk in the park for him i think the perfect wheelbase for an obstacle like this is between 115 and 130 inches and andy's about 108. [Music] [Music] our little ragtag group of wheelers finally has our sights on the last obstacle from where we're sitting you can see yellow hill there's still one more big named obstacle between us and yellow hill and that is rock pile but luckily for us it's completely optional and even the bypass for rockpile is super cool so we're gonna slowly work our way up out of this canyon and the view at the very end makes it all worth it [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] we made it to yellow hill oh of course it's starting to rain again yeah it's it's uh this is one of those things where it looks steep it looks intimidating if you've never been here i shouldn't talk too much trash because we're about to get rained on but um i have not seen anyone have a problem get up this hill but i think we're probably about to it's failed dude it's hailing i need to get going [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] three [Music] so [Music] [Music] i hope you could hear me just kidding it's a little windy you're probably hear some wind noise i apologize today was and cold and motorcycles is that what that is today was awesome it was obviously very unplanned the the amount of wetness but every single vehicle in this group has made it out with no broken parts at least we haven't made to the road yet we made it to the top of the trail with no broken parts i'd say the rclt killed it um it was very impressive and i really like all the super low staff you guys know i like to wheel slow too so that was super rad of course we got to see the v8 woophouse in action that was also i feel like i need to do one of those builds now and kelly [Laughter] hey i'm up here hey he's up here hey even if you have to winch it's still the winner's circle in my book you know what i mean you made it to the end without flipping or without breaking so i think we did all right yeah those motorcycles coming anyway like subscribe follow andy at andy underscore caps instagram follow mike at slowest tacoma follow kelly at at money beers 4x4 and on youtube muddybeards 4x4 and follow me at dirt lifestyle nate see you next time [Music] you
