all right guys welcome to the show my name is Stan genetic I'm known as the dirt monkey I've been a contractor for 35 plus years working in dirt and today we're going to cover the basic equipment you need to get started we're going to be very specific and we're going to actually go to job applications because it's not a one siiz fits-all when it comes to heavy equipment it really depends on what you're going to be using it for what conditions you're going to be under and what piece of equipment will match those conditions so let's get started right out of the gate the first thing that I would say if you're going to buy anything buy a skid loader the one thing that I would buy is a medium bodied skid loader now I don't care about what brand here's the thing I will let's go over the brands buy the brand that has the best dealer in your area they all break they're all going to give you problems and a headache at some point in time so you want to be able to service this but if you're just getting started you want to medium bodied skid loader this is a medium body and then right next to it is a big body okay and the reason that we're talking about the differences in body size is if you are getting into General excavation generalized job sites residential you can even do commercial you want a medium body because that's going to be able to squeeze into tighter are areas the big body is great if you've got to move a lot of material fast you need a lot of power that's when you want a big body but if you just don't know what you're going to be doing a jack of all trades and master of whatever comes your way you want something that just can do it all but maybe not all the best the Bobcat S185 is an amazing piece of equipment it's a medium bodyi loader it doesn't matter if you buy bobcat any of them again pick your brand of what's best for you but let's also talk about track size so we know we we want a medium bodied skid loader for our very first one but do we want tires or do we want tracks this is where it becomes job site specific you want tires if you're going to be doing demolition you want tires if you're going to be tearing these things up on job sites because tires are cheaper then tracks I can pick up a set of tires like this for $800 to $11,000 they're not good tires but they're still new fresh rubber a cheap set of tracks is going to cost me about $2,000 okay now you want tracks if you're going to be sticking more in the dirt if you're going to be plowing snow there's a big dis big discrepancy do you want tires tracks both are amazing if they're set up the right way tracks set up the right way are more effective than tires but tires are still going to be able to do everything you need to do all day and all night if you're plowing snow you do not want to use tracks if you're demolishing things if you're going in and removing concrete and you got to drive over that concrete you're going to put big gouges and rips in these tracks and these tracks are too expensive to replace to have these things be a throwaway what what there's also it also depends on what type of track you have too because there are multiple different types we have the stand we have the our snowplowing ones on right now yep there are ones that are the big fat logs that the dirt Treads the dirt lug use those for a lot of demo work this is dirt lug so what Zach is talking about this is a dirt lug but we're talking about just getting started so if you are going to go with a track machine most of them come just standard with the dirt logs usually not ASV well not an ASV but nobody's going to be getting an ASV right out the gate if why not if it's not in your if it's not in your price point ASV is more expensive they're better quality machine go through everything I've I've done a lot with an ASV where a lot of these won't go through but it's like from your price point if you're trying to come out just starting into it yeah you're going to be using probably older equipment just when you're first starting out you're not going to be using brand new this and you're going to more have to be something like this where it's got some rust on it's got some wears out on on it it you're not bells and whistles let's talk about that well you're talking about rust you're talking about all these things and that means what what I hear you saying is don't worry about this this isn't going to affect your job rate what you get on an hourly basis the bells and whistles you don't need the bells and whistles there's only one Bell and whistle that I would say that you definitely should get and that's an enclosed cab if you're going to be using this thing all year long the second Bell and whistle that I would say that you should get if you can afford it but you don't necessarily have to have it is an auto latch system this speeds up your process and makes life so much easier unless it's on a cat skid loader then they're garbage any of the new ones cuz even if something breaks or that breaks or something you can you got nothing to grab onto to open that up where I like how Bobcat is regardless of what it is you still have the handle you pull that bolt and that bolt and you're you're still going you're still going but that's in an older Bobcat now Bobcat does Bobcat does now have some attachments that are not Universal so you've got to be a you got to do your research to make sure you're aware of it tires you can buy expensive tires you can get cheap tires a cheap tire an expensive Tire do not perform the same longterm they may perform the same short term but a cheap tire is going to wear out much faster because it uses a softer r Rubber and that softer rubber in off-road conditions is going to wear down really fast and so if you're going to be using a cheap rubber tire just know that you're going to end up replacing it faster than if you used a harder rubber compound let's talk about how we get the equipment out to the job sites you've got to get your equipment there one of the things that I'm going to recommend I've got all the equipment that I would recommend to you if you're going to use an equipment trailer I would use the diamond C equipment trailer phenomenal equipment trailer this one right here happens to be my personal favorite of all the equipment trailers that I've ever used what there's only two things that we are missing on this trailer that I would have on my personal trailer what's that and that would be a wch so you can pull on dead equipment yep and then Fork Fork slots Fork slots you you just don't have you don't have those two or whatever and if you're not pulling on dead equipment don't worry about the Wench Fork slots I would definitely use and let's talk about forks and attachments do not get stuck in the Rut that you need to have a grading attachment you don't need a freaking grading bar I I didn't have a grading bar for 20 years I graded every single one of my job sites with that bad boy and you can do every single thing a grading bar can do if you're skilled with one of these buckets yes you don't you don't need all you need really when you're first starting out is a good set of forks yep yes dang yes cut replace The Cutting Edge actually can you replace the Cutting Edge not on that one but on the other one you can there you go great Point Zach I love this is why I said Zach jump in anything you see bolt-on Cutting Edge replaceable not a Bolton that's a throwaway bucket you can see where the bucket's curled bent dinged up it's a pile this one is a much better bucket so everything has its incremental levels the quality now you're going to need if you don't buy a dump truck which I'm not going to say run out and buy a dump truck yeah and unless you got Buu daddy money somewhere and you're just want to play for fun buy a dump truck you do need a dump trailer and again it gets down to what is the best dump trailer in your Market because they will all break if you have the opportunity to buy an ants trailer I would say this has turned out to be our favorite dump trailer of all time oh yeah mine personally what you think oh I I love it it's a great trailer it's a con it's a conveyor belt trailer yeah but it's not a continuous conveyor belt though right so it goes out and then it comes back out and back and it'll raise up it'll go down it'll go into kneeling position it's galvanized I would get this exact trailer I would I wouldn't change a thing about this trailer except for the Jack yeah that'd be the only thing I'd put on like one of those power jacks Jack that about it this one doesn't have a power jack a power jack on a trailer pH doesn't weigh that much to where you need one though so if you're his age don't worry about a power jack if you're my age or older get yourself a power jack cuz hitting a button having that thing raise up raiseed down is phenomenal but for a dump trailer I love the ant oh yeah um let's talk about the next piece of equipment let's go in order we need a trailer equipment trailer now hey one thing is you can actually use a dump trailer to haul your equipment it is absolutely feasible so when you are starting out Bare Bones you get yourself a skid loader now you got to get that out to the job site you don't have money for a equipment trailer you don't have money for a separate dump trailer you can bar you're barely getting by just get the dump trailer and make sure your piece of equipment can fit inside of it but as soon as you can upgrade to an equipment trailer cuz loading equipment in a dump trailer sucks yeah yeah yeah that that that that can get a little sketchy if your first time doing it too it's SK sketchy if you're like Zach oh you think I'm joking see my front window yeah yeah yep I've never broke a front window in my life on one of my excavators and I've owned do a dozen of them but everybody else that you've lended out to has broken them yeah right right when it's not theirs imagine that it doesn't get driven like it's theirs well I I was babying it a and like I said I CL accidents happen but the point is your next piece of equipment after a medium bodied skid loader is going to be an excavator but not just any excavator you've got to size and match that excavator up to the kind of work you're going to be performing a mini excavator can accomplish a lot of things but it won't accomplish anything if you can't get it out to a job site so we're going to cover exactly what size excavator you want because too big it becomes useless CU you can't get it around easily too small and you might as well be digging with a thimble the biggest mistakes I made in the beginning was buying a BHO over a mini excavator a BHO is the most useless pile of equipment that you can get out there and you know what I'm getting a little bit ahead of the game we will cover why you don't want a BHO in comparison to a mini excavator a little later on in this video let's go back and find out exactly what the best size mini excavator is for you right now one of the things I want to point out is the kx040 is the maximum size mini excavator you can get that you can still tow behind a pickup truck that's a huge thing to consider trailer just to haul your mini excavator around that's not going to work cuz this this one is basically what the top of the line before you get to that point this is it this is maxed out so this is a in my opinion I personally love this Kabota kx040 um and if you're in Wisconsin or just you want one go to McFarland the best dealer best deal but hey if you're local and you got a bobcat or you got a KO or you got whatever is available or before you pull the trigger if you can rent a mini excavator and try them out absolutely mini excavators don't need these fancy tilt rotators they don't need all of this stuff out on the end of the boom there's one thing though that I would recommend getting and that is a thumb a thumb absolutely increases the potential of an excavator and then you can work your way up to get like a tilt Rotator or something else on the end of that boom which will then take your mini excavator or your excavator to the next level a four 11,000 lb excavator like this can do a variety of jobs if you want to go up to the next size I would say an 18 to 22,000 lb excavator would be the next best size because that's going to efficiently dig a basement dig an addition you're going to with a little bigger machine you're going to demolish a structure like the barn behind me you're going to be able to get into a larger variety of jobs last but not least is one of my new favorites that I would have never put on this list and that's a cast mini loader now I have two of these and Zach you tell me do you enjoy the cast mini loader oh I love it I it it goes everywhere does everything you need it to do it's not Super Hyper efficient at digging like a skid loader yeah no you're not you're not going to take that that pile of rock right there and push it out with the mini loader you're not going to do that unless you really want to put your thing to the test but so this is a loader that can drive on Turf without damaging it so if your job sites if you're getting into job sites where Turf damage is a key element this is the machine and then you have to outfit it with turf tires okay and not all many loaders are created equal again find the dealer closest to you that has the best one but I would go with this if you have that option because it's steel panels quality we've had we like I said we've got two of them and they've just been amazing from start to finish for us but this is not what I would start with but compared to a skid loader this machine will do more especially if you are own a homestead if you own large acreage if you have a large property and you're going to work around your own property I would buy this before a skid loader that is the exception to to the rule because this is going to do more without damaging it than a skid loader will be able to do you're going to be able to load trucks you're going to be able to throw pallet Forks on and move stuff around you can put a grapple on it has all of the attachments you need it just not going to do it as hyper efficient but you're not on a job site in this case you're on your own property and you need something that can do just about everything right yeah this will do everything in like I said the only thing I might change on this one would be the different tires there is just the less grower of a tires cuz the one we have up north has the more they're lawn more lawnmower looking tires they're even more Turf friendly than those okay and I did not forget about what you got to tow all your equipment out with a truck an F250 or 3/4 ton pickup truck is all you need to be able to tow any one of these pieces of equipment we just looked at we Haul our excavator with it we hauled dozens of loads of rock 7 ton each with this trailer with this truck and this is a gaser do you want gas or diesel well that's your personal preference here's what I'll tell you my two cents is if you're on a tight budget get a gaser because the rest of the truck is going to fall apart before your engine falls apart no matter if you have gas or diesel these trucks take a lick and when you are working them these trucks get beat to heck everything Drive Lines brakes lines if you're plowing in these things in three four years the entire bottom of your truck is going to rot out do not buy a plow truck by the way because the bottoms rot out all of the lines going into the transmission start to erode everything starts to fall apart a used plow truck is one of the worst things you can possibly buy because of the conditions that it's been in but if you're just going out and towing hauling working a 250 is going to handle everything you need and a gaser is going to handle everything you need if you can upgrade to a diesel and you like black you like pumping black coal freck yeah absolutely do it y let's go let's recap everything so you know so you want a medium bodyi skid loader versus a big bodied skid loader there's a there's a time and place for tires and a time and place for tracks you got to dig so your next piece of equipment is going to be a mini excavator you're not going to buy a back hole those things are so inefficient at just about everything they do and I know some people say oh your two of them so your first piece of equipment should be a back hole and I heard that and that was my first piece of equipment was a back hole and it was a terrible I couldn't create a driveway I couldn't do anything I could barely dig additions it was just it's a it's a joke don't get a freaking back ho they're just a joke the only thing that back hos are really good for is utility work because you can drive from sight to sight but now there's even a better option out there so yeah you're that whatever meac the meac yeah CU it's even more it's basically a mini it's basically a a excavator on Wheels now so backos forget it if unless you can buy one really cheap my very first piece of equipment was a back and I regret it I wish I would have bought gotten a skid loader like this one in fact this would be the exact kind of skid loader I would start my business all over again with a tired skid loader gets me into and out of more jobs than a back ho ever could but there's also the benefit to tracks over tires let's talk about that and that's the only reason he really likes tires still cuz you can't do that with a track skid [Applause] he Zach let show why we like this equipment trailer so much this equipment trailer has what's called the kneeling position and what we do is we lift up the safety latch on the front and we put the tongue all the way down which lifts the back up which allows us to actually Place material higher and tighter than a typical dump trailer count now I know I just said that my first skid loader would be this S185 with tires but if my work was dirt dominant and I was not going to be doing demolition or working on hard surfaces like asphalt or concrete I would definitely go with track I miss anything uh no not really you know wood is just dirt that hasn't gotten there yet you can grade anything with a skid loader especially this big one yep and that's something I forgot to mention the benefit of tracks over tires is the fact that you can go places with a track skid loader that a the tired skid loader would not even begin to don't even start to go it's just the stability on these things will take you place as you can't so if you're getting a dedicated grading machine then tracks is the way to go over tires now my question is what line of work are you in and what piece of equipment would you start your business with please share your experience in the comments down below simply because there's going to be a lot of noobs coming in here that are looking through this video for advice and your comments go a long way that's going to call this video for the day I hope you guys enjoyed going along for the ride and I'd love to hear what you guys think God bless go get him you guys we'll catch you on another one
