Do Kyoto's Japanese Locals Want Foreigners to Return?

[Music] [Music] so kyoto has been quiet for some time now while the city experienced years of over tourism the once busy streets are now comparatively empty and while some may say it's peaceful it is a bit of a double-edged sword but the question is how do the locals feel about it me [Music] uh almost everyone i spoke to started by reminiscing as if it had become the standard icebreaker to conversations and after taking a little time to reminisce about the way that kyoto once was most conversations shifted towards talking about the positives it but the unfortunate reality of this situation is that it's not all positives especially in a place like kyoto where the lives and livelihood of so many are based around people visiting um through all the people that i had the opportunity to speak with it was comments like these that really hit the hardest this woman was 82 years old and as you can probably tell was very energetic but was saying that this year was planned to be one of her last years for travel and that that was taken away from her in all fairness though not everybody i met had the world traveler mindset many were understandably tied to kyoto and its traditions yeah foreign me [Music] um foreign [Applause] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] you

I definitely will visit after the pandemic. Japan is a fascinating country. It's good to know that the locals actually welcome visitors and not just pretend to.
