hey what's gonna guys Alex here for mr. bilder and welcome to my backyard and in today's video we're gonna take this ordinary well to be completely honest with you awkward in in the way grilling station and turn of that so without wasting time let me show how I built it and let's get into the video let's go [Music] good morning all you beautiful people it is almost summertime finally getting warm weather out here we gotta figure out of grilling solution here's the issue our deck part on point our grill station week the issue that I'm having here is a slab pretty small we have this awkward space right here and what I'd like to do here's what I'm thinking so far on the brain is I'd like to do a privacy wall I'd like to extend this concrete to about where this window is well right there where that window is and then here's the thing I wanted to have some kind of roofing system whether it's just a decorative pergola like that or an actually functioning thing that keeps it from the ring and also I hope you guys like my mustache my pirate looking d'artagnan looking set up well what kind of likes it she doesn't say anything about it let me know the description below should I keep it or get rid of it alright alright so we picked up a few things we have eighty pound bags for what I needed which is basically 20 square feet is eighty pound bags I need it about twelve of them and then I got couples to by force to make the frame I got the mesh to go in the middle of it for reinforcement I got some anchors the wet anchors that go right inside so we can put posts around it basically all so form about a hundred and twenty eight bucks into it let me show you what I got alright here she is in all her glory oh another thing some gravel you need some base layer to put down for drainage we have to extend the concrete up to about yay and yay we're gonna get rid of all this grass we're gonna clean this area level all off and then we're gonna take our gravel to make sure we have adequate drainage for wet weather or whatnot layer our base tamp it down and then we're gonna start creating a frame with two by fours to create our 4-inch slab this is an existing 4-inch slab of concrete and that's what we're gonna do we're just going to match it and extend it up an extra twenty square feet let's do some little bit sweating hers and sweat we have sweat in the main brain we just have to do it [Music] all right little tip rate last thing probably the most important thing as we're getting everything the frame set is during the direct to consider drainage because these slabs they are flat this week but they drain away from the house this is going to be a level this way and of course it has to drain away so we have to make sure that is accounted for before which they're pouring our concrete [Music] we're gonna throw in some steel reinforcements something a lot of guys will argue with you and tell you all I know you've got to do use rebar for concrete no listen there's the wrong way of doing it and then there's the right way of doing it but there's a lot of different right ways of doing it I usually do about an inch or two of cement concrete and then lay this down and then hopper off with the rest Abhishek is gonna sit right in the middle all right so getting ready five legs out here we need a nice along 2x4 they'll basically run and allow for us to reference the existing paver we're gonna see low spots like this just grab some of this throw it back in there and go over it again until it's flattened once it's all done we're gonna start using our trowel and leveling that smoothly what you'll see is the water will start evaporating and coming to the top and it'll create like a little skim coat all we'll have to do is is drag it along and move it out of the way to allow for it to leave that was create a nice smooth top finish alright so we've got a conch report it's smooth we got a bevel radius on we have our wet anchor in place now in terms of concrete finish I am probably 90% happy with it this is my second concrete job ever the peaks over here you see the rocks more on top it's still smooth it's still strong for the the sand is not rising to the top and the rocks sinking down and I think it's because that batch that I put of concrete mix right there it wasn't as wet as it should have been to allow for the rocks to sink and the sand to rise to the sand is kind of what makes it that finish on top so nonetheless really happy with it that means my third concrete job I'll ever do it's gonna look a hundred percent so this is a classic peligro for the most part all of them are roughly about the same way in the sense that they have an apron and then legs attached to them what I'm gonna do is get some measurements for this base here that way all I have to do is take the legs off and put it on top of our built in section and also please excuse they have bro tank it's warm weather season and it's really hot working the shot [Music] all right so we got the base done nice and sturdy I got it attached to the foundation right there or the framing of the house I got my half inch OSB yeah half inch I know what I'm gonna do is now secure to the sides the tops the backside and I'll be my base that's basically who's gonna be the highest level that this smoke is gonna sit and then at that point I'm gonna build the two units off to the side [Applause] [Music] all right so we've got the face all figured out here on that's either gonna have 12 inches over on this set I'm gonna do this entire space it's gonna be concrete countertops possibly I think and I'm just gonna give about 2 inches on each side it's it's a big enough of a pellet grill that the next owner if you guys even a little bit smaller one it'll still fit so at this point we're gonna build up the boxes and start go from there [Music] [Music] so I made a mistake well it's a design thing it didn't think completely through I was gonna put concrete here and I still will but I don't really see the need of just putting in a 2x4 down here just to elevate it just a little bit in fact it's gonna be a problem putting OSB here so I'm gonna hack this off right there remove the screws and I'll just put the concrete right on the OSB and that'll be fine which is we just go we just go as we build [Music] now we're gonna wrap it with the Builder felt now the Builder felt acts as a moisture barrier it acts as a secondary but not in this application and the primary is usually the house of rapidly do moisture barriers but we don't want to put that here because the heat underneath it might cause it to shrink heat up and potentially start a fire so that's a big no-no instead we could just use builder felt wrapped around staple like we're basically building a house at this point we're gonna figure out how to make this fire retardant we're gonna put concrete on top in there so that's going to take care of that now the next part is again for the stone this is the metal galvanized last I believe they call it and it has a honeycomb shape and the honeycomb shape you want it to point out and upwards and the reason why is because what you put the mortar on you want it to slide down and grip on it and that slide off of it so we're gonna nail it using roofing nails these are inch-and-a-half roofing nails and the trick to make sure everything is nice and strong is to put a nail every six inches vertically and every 12 inches to 15 inches horizontally that way this sucker stays on there and keeps all of our stone in place the most frustrating part of this project is you have to both think about waterproofing make sure this thing there's a rot weather and fire proof so it doesn't just catch on fire and burn my house down not stressful at all [Music] all right so we got our medal laugh on it's time to fill this area this is a blend of motor mix it's the s-type that's very important so when you guys find we're gonna make a bucket with water using a paddle mixer to the consistency of peanut butter easy enough to follow now then we're gonna do two different types of coats the first one's called a scratch coat we're gonna take our trowel and we're gonna fill this entire honeycomb so we can see that metal mesh and let it drive firmly for an hour I said any point any of the mesh moves stop secure it with another nail or a screw and then continue it on we're gonna let it sit firm for about an hour once that's done we're gonna do the score coat and what we're gonna do there is grant take more of the mixture and use the half-inch straus to make horizontal lines again the horizontal parts are gonna be allowing for the stone to actually be gripped as opposed to slide down so get to work [Music] well if you guys have been following me for any time at all you know that I attend to messed up on some projects right now it's not a mistake I'm trying to figure out how to put the pergola for the post because I got to let this mortar drive for 48 hours I figured I'll work on another part of the project I can't figure out how to mount this pergola in terms of weight distribution all this stuff safely so we're gonna connect it to the post that i have here the anchor set and the other part of the leg is gonna have to go in here now I don't want to mount it on top but I do want to do is fortunately this is a two-piece thing I'm going to remove this OSB I'm gonna put the pole by for post and secure it from the inside to the studs that I write here it's actually go away down in here so that way you'll give us adequate structural support and then we'll replace it it happens I'm okay with it we're just gonna start taking it apart see carrying it in and start building this thing out [Music] these are two by sixes I just put a 50 degree miter at the ends basically two inch gap we're gonna raise them flush up to the top right there big lag bolts screwed into place and then after that we're gonna put another two by six going basically vertically and then one by ones on top I'm gonna stack it up it's gonna give this cool up I don't know if dr. Japanese kind of thing feel I don't know I've seen pictures of it look cool want to try it okay [Music] now you can match them about I don't know an inch or two to sit or recess down on top of this beam but you don't have to I've tilt this pergola and it's just sitting on there in the way secure there's just three inch screws going at an angle into this section from the top you can't see them and it looks great you guys you gotta check this out so check this out I said screw it with a one by one and set out one of the two by fours and might hurt them and it gives it a really cool textured look I could not be more happier with this it just to show you that design sometime comes like halfway through profit alright now that I've personally built that we are going to prepare for the environments and the way we're gonna do that is through an old Japanese technique called Shu Shu Gabon and the idea behind this through flame and fire we are going to char the exterior of it and what its gonna do is kind of calcify the exterior pores and kind of include them to prevent from the rain coming down and being absorbed through it the way we're gonna do it is going to reduce the burns ematic matt pro-gas burns really hot and it's gonna allow for us to carry on the pattern that we want number two we're gonna use the TS 8000 torch what I like about this torch is once you turn the gas on and you get the flame going you can lock it in place and then you adjust your flame how you'd like it so if you want to continue slowly that's fine if you really want to speed up the process crank it up and get to work that being said I'm gonna start firing this up and give it a nice good finish once it's all done I'm gonna take a stiff bristle brush get the char exterior off and then we're gonna seal it with some boiled linseed oil let's go [Music] [Music] [Music] all right so let's make this smoker area part more fire retardant a little more safe so what I'm gonna do is I'm going to use Hardiebacker or a cement board to screw it into the OSB lines inside of it does it act as an installation for the heat it's not it's not flammable so this is perfect and then on top of it we're gonna take this galvanized steel flashing that you can find in the roofing or the gutter section at your hardware store and we're gonna screw that in both the same areas where the hardy backer board is and that way we'll have multiple layers of protection and make me sleep pretty safe at night now we're gonna start laying down the actual stone here's the stuff that I picked out and the nice thing about this stuff is it's kind of in little columns so you don't fit each individual piece you just set them and kind of plug and play it's dagger that makes a good one things they recommend is do your corners first and then depending what you read online some say you can work from the top down majority people recommending work from the bottom up the guys I sold do stuff they said with this kind of stuff you can kind of work from top down if you want as long this thing's not drooping down and I think I'll see what kind of feels comfortable now here's some lessons I've learned the hard way that I want to pass on to you guys do corners first do the bottom and then work your way up that way you have a Ledge doesn't slide as much make sure it's not too hot outside water will evaporate and make a pain I'll drive too fast just spray it and get it hydrated get your mortar mix the proper mixture is when you can put on your trowel tilt a ninety or tilt it 90 degrees it can still stay without falling off put one or two inches on spread it all out at that point we're gonna push allowing for the air to pop out of there and prevent not too much of this mortar squeeze out give it a few little wiggle side to side good pressure get the excess off and you're ready to do the rest work from the ends in and then the in the middle ones you can trim them off with excess stuff that's there and that's what I've learned from it cells let's get back to there doing this all right so we're almost there almost none of the project I Ridgid I was gonna pour concrete to hop but our game-changing decision last minute to change the way were you're doing a post kind of put a kibosh on it so we're improvising no big deal we are gonna use these pavers these are eight inches by 16 I believe and surprised enough it's actually covering pretty good spots I'm using an angle grinder just to cut the slots out I'm gonna use the construction adhesive it's a concrete binding agent and we're gonna put a couple of layers underneath it and stack it all together make sure everything's nice level and balanced and from there we'll be ready to clean up almost there guys [Music] hey that is it for me this
