are you needing some sort of way to feed your livestock your cattle your sheep your goats pigs probably won't work on this one are you interested in a bulk way to feed them so what you don't have to come out every single day and put your buckets out and throw them in like a trophy here or whatever I built this one if you're interested stay tuned and I will show you how [Music] what's going on welcome welcome back my name is Paul Shawn trooper I'm a small farmer in central Indiana we have another project on today's list this is one I did not get pre wife approval on it's something that we discussed it's something that we said that needed to be done before March really supposed to be on 1st February clearly I blew that deadline but if you saw the last project video where I built the greenhouse yes I know I'm wearing a lot of the same stuff no it is not the same day I didn't get that greenhouse done the first day I to go back it was just too windy to try and put the plastic on today's video is a necessity I'm assuming that you clicked this video based off the thumbnail or the title or you just like to watch a Sean Schrute farms video which I appreciate all the above there but let's go ahead and get into it there's no plans on this I had no way to farm plans on this this is strictly a winging it kind of a video and a winging it kind of a build I did see some pictures that I liked I took from them what I like and I drunk them down obviously we are being 100% transparent and what we do we do grain finish our calves gives us that great product that great inter muscular marbling that we strive for I hope that's why you're watching this video is you're trying to figure out a way to improve your feeding process right now we use a bunk feeder go out twice a day and feed them we China we then building them up because calves like their grain so much it's like chocolate cake to me and they will eat and eat eat until they get bloated and then at that point they would die we don't want that to happen obviously but we do want them to eat neat neat and have a free choice option of it instead of us going out there twice a day that's why we're doing this bunk feeder so without further ado let's code and get started into it and let's go one of the main things I wanted was to have the feeder be at least a little bit mobile so I just simply took a 4x4 cut it to length and put a degree angle on it so that way I could keep it at least a little bit mobile the joists are just gonna be simply two by fours and I use another two by four to make it tea on it so I can get a good securing down to my skids and still getting up off the ground a little bit for the base I just used a four foot by four foot sheet of plywood which I secured down to give myself a good base and a good foundation [Music] one thing I did think about was how to get the feed to fall and not collect at the bottom so I simply cut two pieces of 2x4 non pressure-treated and simply screwed them together to give myself a 90 degree angle which I would put a piece of sheathing over so that way it would force the feed to drop down and to have this little waste as possible [Music] for all of my walls I just simply use two by fours and two and a half inch screws for the simple fact I don't have a nail gun and I wasn't really sure this project was gonna work out with 100% success so I wanted to have the option to make changes if I needed to [Music] so as you can see I'm really building from the inside out so that way the weight of the feed will push against the two by fours that are screwed down just simply secured that sheathing and it was at this point I realized I needed to put the plywood on my two in walls first and I had to take everything apart to make that happen mistakes do happen we all make them [Music] after I fixed my crucial mistake it was really time to come back through and frame up the two other walls nothing fancy here over a four-foot period I decided to put just one stud in the middle which would have made a two-foot on center and as you can see as I'm applying the plywood to the inside like I said to push that pressure against the two by fours instead of against the screws this is very crucial the only drawback was and you'll see here in a second is the fact that when I had to go secure the final piece of plywood in it was a bit of an acrobatic experience probably not the safest thing I've ever done I really didn't want to have to call my friends at the fire department to come get me if I would have gotten stuck but I was able to do it successfully just something to keep in mind always think safety first before you do what I'm about to do [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so the roof is really nothing fancy accented at two feet over the edge so that way would try and keep the rain off of it like I said earlier I use a lot of screws for my own well-being and my own ability to make changes when things went wrong but the same time this cops are gonna really test and push on it especially in the beginning and really using screws allows me to secure it down even more now when it came to putting the roof and the fascia board on I did go with pressure-treated on the end for the sheer fact that it will be exposed still even after metal the metal will run past it just a little bit but not by much and that rain will hit that indication board so I would definitely wanted that the pressure treated just simply use one by fours for banding boards you don't need to get too wound up with screws on this to secure it down once I've decided to put metal on obviously you need banding boards to put metal on that's why they're there now when it comes to the metal I did custom order it from like my local roofing company that I've bought metal off of for my house barn and everything else on the in walls it wasn't far enough of a band that ever required banding boards like the roof does or the long four foot walls did but it's just something to consider with what kind of material you decide to choose for your [Music] like you said before banging boards are very crucial when hanging metal it's just something to give some have a good place to screw the metal onto if you've never installed metal before it's a bit of a trick there are some things that can be kind of tricky with it if you have experience with it I highly recommend it obviously the cows are all right the cows are gonna damage anything or break anything but at the same time metal I just think it looks a lot cleaner and I'm really impress all recommend that if you've never worked with metal gloves are very important there are little pricks and stuff that'll hit get you with metal obviously I'm not wearing gloves and I did pay for it by catching some splintered metal splinters if you want to look at it into my hand and also the other thing with metal is it is kind of difficult to do by yourself if you have the option to make this is easier with two people one person can hold the metal and the other one can screw I do have a magnet bit on there so if we hold the screw for me which didn't make things a lot easier [Music] now when it came to the roof portion obviously I wanted to have a lid that I could take off so I could fill it full of feet again I initially thought I had ordered barn ridge cap which is a lot wider than your standard house ridge cap however I didn't so I had to redesign the roofing system entirely what is not the end of the world whatsoever and I was able to still overcome it actually made the lid a lot more lightweight and I had initially designed and it's gonna work out [Music] so if you've never worked with metal if you are cutting horizontally use your snips if you're cutting vertically use a sharp blade to cut with the score along several times and gonna work that piece of metal back and forth as you can see here now when it came time to move it obviously I built this inside the barn and it was kind of a chore as you can see we did kind of struggle but we were finally able to get it outside so as you can see just a simple roof system the feed comes out at the bottom here gravity-fed I can put just over a thousand pounds in it I haven't filled it yet but I do know based on cubic inches and everything on how much feed I can hold based off the fact of my feed storage that I've done a video over I'll link it up it atop and down on the card below or in the description below but just very simple this is lightweight and it's just as simple as that I didn't fill it full yet we're still getting to the point of getting them used to it and all I got to do is come out here on feeding day so as you can see it's pretty easy all guys do is come out here when I go to pick up my thousand pounds plus the feed and just open the lid up and just toss my bags open them obviously into there and the feed will come out I have very little it should have very little waste we're still gonna be working with our calves to make sure they don't bloat and feed them kind of the same way we have for at least the next week or maybe two weeks just to make sure that we are still going through our feed like we're supposed to we've kind of gotten them up in feed and we want to just we want to get them to the point that they have the opportunity to be on full feet basically they still do have full hay as well they've always had full hay but just getting the feed on them as well the total dimensions on this was 4 foot by 4 foot by 2 foot it's what works for us we don't have a whole lot of calves that we need to feed out when I went to price them out they're very very expensive but I mean it's for what it is those hopefully this will last this many many years and I'll keep you guys updated on that but at the same time it's just one of those things I couldn't justify dropping 1,200 1,500 dollars or something the exact same size and probably a lesser quality than what I made myself and I hope it's able to help you I did have some design oversights with the roofing system but hey that like I said from the beginning this is gonna be a project I don't know how it was gonna work out I knew it was gonna work I wasn't allowed to fail and really upset the missus on this one but she's happy the Cavs are happy something makes me happy I appreciate you guys coming out farming with me today and I will see you guys next time [Applause] [Music]
