so if you're an old dude like me who likes to do a lot of kayaking and you've got some back issues or you just have one of those kayaks that are just ridiculously heavy you might want to check out this solution I have looked around for some type of automatic kayak car topper that would you know automatically lift the the boat up onto the car so I did some research I looked around and I came across one that was you know pretty much exactly like what I was wanting it had a winch system that you just hand cranked it to load and unload the kayak and it looked great but it was also 681 bucks so I felt like this could be accomplished for a lot less money and something in a kind of a DIY type situation so I went out and I got myself some PVC tubing and like a small $30 boat winch a piece of scrap wood a few bolts some stainless steel bolts and put this together [Music] all I did was get inch-and-a-half PVC and I had a heat gun and I just kind of heat molded it to the shape of the roof rack bars on top of the car very very simple I mean you can can do it and lightning at 10 minutes basically you just have to make sure that they they both Bend at the exact same angle you know that they're both the same link and also leave yourself a little bit of room or they don't completely touch the ground that way the one they're shorter whenever you're storing them but also if the ground is a little bit uneven there's an interesting problem there so the the winch part I just mounted the winch to a board and put in stainless steel bolts to hold that down I grabbed myself a little pulley and I just run the the winch line through that pulley and I mounted the pulley also to the UM to the winch board I just used some of the tow rope I'm not the tow cable with the tow rope it's um extremely strong stuff and it's a lot more flexible and you don't have the the chance of scratching up the top of your car like that like the cable with so all I do is just crank the handle on the on the winch and just kind of keep an eye on the on the road make sure the kayak is coming up lamps on evenly and once it reaches the top of the car all I do is just kind of situate the kayak towards the towards the center of the car make sure it's lined up straight using the straps that I had for the bridle I can undo those and put those back to the to the roof rack rails and just take off the UM your PVC ramps and throw them it either inside the car or you can just strap them onto the onto the car topper itself and off you go [Music] and so far this solution has worked really really good for me and it hit loads and unloads on the kayak you know just with cranking a handle you just throw some straps around the the kayak kind of was like a bridle and you just you just hook it up and just winch it right up and it works perfectly so maybe somebody out there can utilize this idea to load and unload their kayak and might not be so sore at the end of the day and if you're kayaking for multiple days that's a good thing [Music] you
