[Music] hey what's up everyone it's Nick here from modern home right now this week I'm gonna show you exactly the steps that are took to build this live edge and a foxy dining table and I must say it turn out sweet so stay tuned [Music] I start of every live-edge project the same and that's making the Slavs nice and flat using my router sled [Music] because the slabs had a twist to them I assumed each end up equally until those no more Rocking [Music] using a one and a half inch surfacing bit in my router I began to take up one eighth inch at a time until each side was dead flat I'll add the router bed that I used in the description below [Music] now it's time to build the forum for this I use the sheet of 5/8 plywood the slice of the forum really depends on the size of the finished table that you make it in this case I made a six foot by three foot table so I cut the base of the forum six foot by three foot adding an inch on the length and the width that way I can cut out any deficiencies that manicure during the epoxy curing stages [Music] with the off cuts of the plywood I rip them down into four inch strips and then I cut two of those four inch strips to the same length of the bottom of the form I think got two more strips for the two ends [Music] what somewhat pieces of the former's cut aligned each piece of construction tape you can use a mold release spray but I found this the most effective in my situation anyway this is to stop the epoxy from sticking to the form while Kira [Music] I touch the sides to the form using a bead of silicone and countersinking screws ensuring that the bottom of the foam is the flat and flush with a four inch strip I repeat this on both sides [Music] and then using the same technique I touch the ends to the form using silicone at every point that they made [Music] again using a kind of sink in wood screws I touched the sides making sure that the bottom of the form it's a flat and flush with a four inch strip all four sides are on and then apply another small bead of silicone along the whole interior the floor and then clean off any excess with I then flip the form over and then tape all of the joints this may seem over the top but epoxy is really expensive and it sucks when it leaks out so I don't want anything Nick you know that so I just tape and glue and silicone everywhere I can once the form is done I then cut the slabs to size cutting these about 1/16 smaller than the inside of the form this way this would just slip right out once that was done I then cleaned up all the live edge and all the cracks and the holes using a wire brush attachment in my drill you want to make sure the loose bark is removed because you would want to get the best bond possible with the epoxy [Music] [Music] I then removed all the marks left behind from the router using an 80 grit sandpaper in my orbital sander and then flip the slabs over and then using the same construction tape I sailed all the cracks and the holes that go all the way through the slab [Music] once that's done I then drop the slabs into the forum and my camera dies typical as you can see here I put a bead of silicone around the whole perimeter of the pore and all the holes and the cracks this basically creates a dam for the epoxy so it doesn't just kind of just seep up and go everywhere it kind of contains to where it's gotta stay now it's time to calculate the amount of epoxy that is needed at each mark made and measure the distance of the void or the river section or whatever you want to call it I had all those measurements up and then divide that number by the amount of measurements taken [Music] [Music] times that number by the thickness of the slabs [Music] and then time that number by the overall and then divide that total by 61 this will give me a close enough estimation to how much pop see daddy if you want an exact him out I'll go find the cubic-inch to leader calculator on google and type your turtle in that if my calculations were correct I needed a whole 28 litres of epoxy but I ended up mixing a whole 30 liters because I had all those voids and cracks on either floor as well with this application I use eco poxy liquid plastic to Dewan mix ratio a mix the epoxy for about 15 minutes on the low setting of my drill and then I'd it sit for half an hour to let the air bubbles escape [Music] that was a lot of fun anyway once epoxies poured I let it set for about two hours and then I come back with a blowtorch and then blow all the bubbles out this isn't 100% necessary because of the cure time and let's all the bubbles rise to the top I feel like it's more of a satisfaction thing because it looks cool [Music] three days later once the epoxy is fully cured I then took it out of the mold and then begin to take up all the high spots using my router [Music] I then begin the rough sanded I start with 80 grit walk my way up to 120 grit using my orbital sander [Music] between each grip I give the table a dust off and then I wipe down with a mixture of 50% water and 50% mineral spirits this will give the grain of the table of water pop and as well as clean of all the dust residues left behind from there pop [Music] and then cut the table to its final dimensions using my tracks [Music] you [Music] boy that was riveting I hate sounding so much I start off from 120-grit and work my way up to 320 graph using the same techniques as before [Music] I give the table the final Dustoff ready to finish [Music] I gave the table a base coat of ozma oil would wax extra thin I applied this using a blue shop towel and let it sit for eight hours overnight [Music] I came back the next day and buffed off any residue I repeated this step for the underside of the table as well put the top coats I use more oil poly acts I applied this by wiping it on with a blue shop towel and then buffed it in with a white pad using my polish sander I continued to buff in until all Reggie was gone I let this dry for eight hours and then continued the same steps on the underside of the table once the oil had dried and then began to mark the position of the base ensuring that the basis at center at the table unlike to each irrigated home I must not have had the base of the table Medlock [Music] I touch the base of the table using threaded inserts so at each mark that I made I drilled a hole at 3/8 of an inch thick and then using tape on my drill bit as a depth stop and then glue down every insert as they go along using five-minute epoxy are you started in certain set of screws because this way you can take the table off the base as many times as you like without the warrior messing up the thread [Music] I then touch the top to the base and then give it a final coat Osmo poly axe oil I applied the final coat just using a blue shop towel I let that sit for 10 minutes and then buffed off any residue using a blue shop toe [Music] using the same steps I continue to do the underside and then let that dry for 8 hours [Music] I think came back the next day and give it a spray with the Osmo liquid work this basically is it a nice glossy Sheen was finished basically spray it on let it sit for an hour then buff it off [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and there it is I'm extremely happy how this turned out there is a super rewarding bill for me I love that the epoxy is so dark yet translucent you can see through it and certain lights just gives it that classy feel if you had any questions or comments I'd love to hear them in the comment section below and if
