everyone in this video I'm going to show you how to make a DIY dog poo compost for yourselves when Kiran I first started looking at the shops for a dog poo compost the only ones that we could find are quite small well Charlie's forty five kilos so she was gonna fill them out pretty quickly this is why we decided to make one for ourselves the tools that you need to make a dog poo compost isn't all that extensive most people will have what is required in their garage already let's go and have a look at what's needed well the first thing is a drum pesky drum with a lid ideally it's a lid that comes off straightaway without having to screw off this will just make it much easier coming later on when you want to go and put the wunst in there we we got these off Gumtree we've got three of them for about $20 you need a drill to drill some holes into the sides we've got a half inch drill bit here to drill those holes a small handsaw or a jigsaw to be used to cut the base of the drum off a shovel and someone to dig the hole you'll need some rocks to go into the bottom of the compost some Enzo pets starter now this is chock full of microorganisms this is what's going to help break the place down this will be the second time that we've dug this dog poo compost in the first time was at our last house we moved here about four months ago and admittedly it has taken us a little while to get around to it but we're doing it now it was down for about 12 months and in that time it never got a higher than halfway at the start it did start to build up a little bit but after a while it did settle and did start breaking down and for the twelve months that we had it running it never got over that halfway mark the first step is to drill the holes now this drum is the nut is one of the other ones that we hadn't actually dug in so you're going to start you want to start about a third of the way down drill holes down the side and all the way around there we go as you can see we've gone about half or sorry a third of the way down the ground is going to come up to about here the holes start down here we don't want the holes come up too high and we don't want them exposed to air just so that the the odor doesn't come in they go the whole way around the drum and they go down to the bottom as well as you can see the bottom is also been cut up to do this I drilled a couple of holes just to get the the saw going and then just soared around the whole diameter with a jig saw it is going to be much easier but it is still possible if you don't have one when you are looking for a spot to put your dog poo compost just make sure you keep it at least a couple of metres away from any gardens that have edible foods this will prevent any contamination from the waste when you go to dig the hole you can use the lid or the drum as a template place it down dig around move them out of the way and then dig your hole remember you want to go deep enough so there's only about an inch of the drum above the ground which keeps those holes below the ground level time to dig your hole [Music] [Applause] [Music] okay there we go the hole is dug and see the barrel sitting in there on the ground slopes so you can see on the left hand side there it's just coming up under the lip and on the right hand side here it's gonna come up maybe about two inches below the lip which is fine if we have a look right in the hole there you can see the holes the top roller hole is going to be well under the ground level which means that no odor is going to come out and once we get the bacteria from the Enzo pit starter in there and some grass clippings the that's all going to break it down nicely all right the hole is dug and I'm a sweaty mess and it is actually raining a little bit so we'll try and get this finished nice and quickly the next step is to put some rocks in the bottom I've got the garden rocks what we mentioned earlier if you don't have any of these ready out readily available usually either in your garden or your neighbor's garden if they are very nice if you're on good terms with your neighbors you might better borrow some or just head down to Bunnings or your a hardware store and just buy some smooth River rocks you can to put some of these in the bottom just so it covers the bottom just to aid drainage we're going to grab some compost now the microorganisms inside the compost are going to help the puter break down [Music] [Applause] [Music] you don't need an awful lot just a little bit to get it started now my compost hasn't broken down an awful lot but there's enough microorganisms in there to help it will get going [Music] now that we've got the rock sent a bit of compost in the bottom of the barrel that's going to hold it in place so we're going to put the lid on and backfill the dirt [Music] all right there we go so that's all dug in now the sand and the sign has been backfield I've tamped it down and now it's looking good to go the last thing now is just a donation from Charlie and get it all started this is what I use to pick up dog poo in the yard it's just an old garden pot and a goning shovel one tip though is make sure you always grab it from the one same side each time okay so filled my bucket up it's now just a matter of taking the lid off you can see the benefit of having the the non screwed lids and just tip the poo in next up we just add some of the NZ pets this is the bag that we opened up for our kit we've been using this bag for 12 months and as you can see now we're only about halfway through the bag so it does last quite a long time and you don't need an awful lot of it each time you put it in there we just keep a measuring cup in the bag you don't use a full cup it's only enough to just cover the poo that's in there [Music] [Music] just a little bit extra because this is the first time that we have used this bucket there we go that is the end product you have the rocks followed by some either grass clippings or compost the poo and then just the Enzo pet starter over the top we've got the one dog Charlie 45 kilos so this drum is more than enough to take care of her this size drum would be great if you've got a couple of small adults even though if you do have a small dog and you don't want to have to go and buy something from the shops a drum this size or maybe a little bit smaller is going to get you out of the trouble well I do hope this video helps you go ahead and hit that like button don't forget to subscribe and turn on notifications so you can stay up to date with all of the green hubs videos
