my baby on the treetop when the wind blows the cradle will rock hey guys alex here for mr. belman and in today's video I'll show how I made this built-in reading nook for the baby in the nursery so without wasting time let's get into the video let's go [Music] now like a lot of you already know we are expecting a new addition to our family a baby in June the third time we're going through the baby phases and the first two times didn't go so well because my wife likes to buy the typical classic baby gear I said enough is enough it's time for me to equip myself with something better something dad friendly in terms of diaper bags and baby carriers first let me show you the diaper bag and the baby carrier that she's expecting for me to carry I'm not wearing this not and I'm 90% sure that's not a diaper bag that's a lady purse oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah there's a little laundry bag this right here for the wipes bottle holder changing pad it says drop zone get it poopy diaper bombs away harness is to hang it off of a stroller be sure to go to tactical baby gear calm I'll put a link down description below use my promo code mister build a ten all one word to get 10% off of your order today let's get back to building to simplify the process and to keep expenses low I decided to use an inexpensive MDF for the base of the cabinets in use the simplest joining techniques to build everything overall end up using five sheets of MDF on this project and so each sheet costing roughly around $30 I'm about a hundred fifty bucks into this project at this point [Music] every mbf piece had wood glue and one and a quarter inch screws securing it to the support because MDF is a soft material and to prevent any kind of issues torquing it down I recommend counter sinking a pilot hole before driving the screw into it if you guys seen any of my other videos you probably heard me say about how preparation is everything and make sure things are square the foundation prime example right here I know these are squared right but now I'm gonna put these support pieces that are also going to act as Gorge right or shells and I need them to be squared now imagine of their drawers it's pretty easy to put this in here and saying okay we're lined up here and we're lined up there but what about this plane if that's off you have a nightmare when it comes to installing drawers or anything else so what I like to do is take a square there's a framing square set it down register your base slide it up now we know that the next piece just have to simply line up with that and the same obviously up on the other side it'll be square so watch yourself on these bases some of the most important mistakes are made here [Music] notice these base cabinets do not have a built-in toe-kick I did that just to simplify the build for you guys but to still have a functional toe-kick section which prevents you from stubbing your toe under the cabinet when you come near the built-ins I assembled two by fours to sit three inches under the cabinet and secure them into the studs in the wall and the floor board alright so we're gonna need to take down these baseboards just because this entire units gonna be fitted and we're gonna baseboards wrap it up here now I debate it over and over do I cut the carpet out and then install the unit that would be a little bit easier to balance or be do I just position it on top and secure to the ground just in case the next owners want a little bit more room or don't want that and they can use it lies this new carpet that we have I figured better be safe than sorry let's just keep it put it on top if they want to do something about it cool that way then to replace this entire pad this will be our new base to work from then I marked out all the studs from the cabinet's and secured that base cabinet both into the wall studs and the 2x4 toe cakes that we made [Applause] have built the upright vertical cabinets for the shelves the same depth as the base which is 18 inches deep as any home improvement project wools are never perfectly straight so when securing everything be sure to use a level and some wood wedges to level all the cabinets during the installation what's important to note is some of the places you will have gaps like here nice and tight obviously here the gap gets bigger and then tighter we could have cut this through and push it in that's an option second option we have is shims and this is typically what they do with cabinets that were there not tinkering with drywall and damaging it is they'll take a shim and let's say like a shim here and here's my stud put the shim over it and then screw it from this side that way it's not pushing the pulling anything and still security it pretty well so make sure you pick up some of these shims very cheap at harvesters very cheap [Music] so I'm sitting here and I'm trying to troubleshoot a little bit there's this old saying like you can build something to last for five years or you can build something to last for 40 years MDF I don't know specifically if it's a 40 year job maybe we'll split it down the difference I don't know but what I am thinking is how to give it the best option to survive the longest MDF typically does so I'm thinking of pressure so something said here the pressure is distributed just fine somebody's sitting here this would be a pretty weak spot so I would think we need some reinforcement here the second spot that I'm thinking is underneath here their reinforcement pieces on the side but nothing down over here which is possibly four inches out so what I think I'm gonna do is I'm gonna cut a piece to reinforce it right there okay I'm gonna the same thing over there so that will take care of it on that side over here the jury's still out I might put a piece here or I might just close this off to be a bench a solid bench and that way we'll just use that for storage I think that's probably a better option this just happens to be a strong bench that three people can sit on we're not gonna worry about it sagging over time and then right there we're gonna reinforce it so it's kind of it's it's kind of nice to think for the future so a little advice for you guys when you build look at your pressure point see what the structures are and then kind of consider how long can we make the structure last cool it's a field so just take my oh yeah oh yeah that is strike that is the strain it's gonna last for a very long time and it's gonna take quite a bit of abuse really glad we did that so I just picked up the face frames for the cabinet and the material I'm using is gonna be a pine a select pie now you might be thinking well why are you building this thing kind of budget-friendly by using MDF art using expensive or more pricier select pine for the hardwood well because the face frame is basically the part that gets dinged and hit the most and if I made that out of MDF or trim board or anything like that it would dent and chip and I don't want to do I wanted to give a little more sturdiness to it a little more toughness okay by using this stuff right here that would keep us safe so we're gonna be laying down the face frame and that typically these pocket holes to secure the inside in but this is all going to be painted anyways and this is just basically trim work because it's more durable than putting MDF trim we're gonna be using Brad nails and a little bit of wood glue to put it on then we're gonna everything with cocking now I have the luxury of bringing my miter saw up here I got a turkey off I got a little dust collection port there so I'll be measuring I'll be hanging and covering and it's not beautifying this thing let's go I'm installing the pine face frames using wood glue and 100 or inch Brad nails the Brad nails are 18 gauge so they're thin enough to be concealed I found it to be much easier to do the long pieces first and then the smaller sections to finish everything off smoothly [Music] gotta give me some love man once that face-frame some trim was on I used the wood filler to fill in all the nail holes and joints to give it a smooth finish when done once it dried I sanded all the wood filler using 120 grit sandpaper Oh everything's ready here's the problem is before I'm gonna be applying the caulk to all the joints I got to make sure the areas to clean and dust is I mean it's hard to get out so here's my creative way of doing so [Applause] [Music] [Music] what are you doing oh wow primers looking good um do you want me to inside there yeah yeah sweet alright we're gonna lay down some paint a lot of you guys are always asking what kind of paint we have it's from Sherwin Williams the pink called frosty white no we're not gonna do frosty white for the back the we're gonna do baseball colors what's amazing what's the base Facebook extra right the baseboards are extra white the walls are frosty white so I'm still right yes but the built-ins are extra light we're fighting all right here we go respirator on [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] okay so if you've never made a single drawer ever in your life I will teach you the drawer style that I've made for a couple of years before I start evolving my skill set to cream or unique joint is fans're woodworking stuff I'll show you the basic joint that way you can get started doing it all yourself honestly nothing nothing to be worried about so we have our cuts done everything's gonna be what's called a bud joint and all about joint is is we got this piece and that piece connects as a tea and you've got Brad nails with glue holding it down so let's see how these are gonna be my twenty and a half okay wood glue I like to use type on two or type on three super high tensile strength and it's water is this spread it out with your finger that way when the two joints combine it adhesives or heaves or whatever the word is the pieces of the I don't know together evenly or distributes at least evenly put it together grab a brad nailer you don't have to get a fancy one like this but if you do there's a link in description you don't always use something with a like a air compressor kind of one you get a really cheap set up for I don't know maybe a hundred bucks with and brad nailer on face book marketplace make sure this is all nice and straight I'm using two inch Brad nails and one right there and the nice thing is the Brad nails also act as clamping pressure now it's not super strong we gotta wait for the glue to dry but it'll still stay if you're gentle as you can see would lose squeezing out to me that tells me it's a good even press and now very carefully we're gonna stumble around cover the entire perimeter look at that we built our first drawer together a special moment the drawer faces were made in a shaker style for the styles in rail section which is just a fancy way of saying vertical and horizontal face frame pieces I had a half inch by half inch a rabbet cut and glued down on a half inch sheet of plywood I plugged off they exposed square channels on the sides of the drawer faces with scrap piece of wood and filled with wood filler for smoothness so you're probably wondering what exactly is my mounting method so what I'm thinking of doing is keeping it super simple a foot pocket holes on the back of this maple plywood I'm bringing right into where the shelves is basically gonna be and I'm gonna secure this at the side so now this would be the front and I put a couple of pocket holes there what I'm gonna do is again it's been a really simple I'm gonna attach a piece maybe like two inches thick or something like that to the side here and then secure it with pocket bolts that would be kind of like the face of it and then the top of it I'm gonna the expose edge you know plywood edges I'm gonna edge band it and I think this method a lot of people are gonna be able to actually try as opposed to like some of my previous videos if you can see we did like 45-degree angle so this is going to be a super approachable DIY method [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] two concealed exposed plywood edge layers we are going to edge ban them I bought the maple iron-on edge banding to make the perfect match for the veneer plywood set your iron on hot and turn off the steam it's been about five seconds per section to melt the veneer glue evenly and then use a scrap piece of wood to press the veneer onto the plywood edges until the glue begins to cool down and dry once seven ears on trim off the excess veneer edges with a sharp blade and sand the edges smooth using 120 grit sandpaper using a block behind it for support sometimes actually helps the process a little bit easier I stay in the shelves using a color called fruit wood from Minwax and seal the shelves for protection using a polyurethane through a HVLP sprayer which is a high volume low pressure sprayer I'll have links in description for these products and tools for you guys to check out so for installation I'm guessing couple of things we'll need is a pocket hole adapter bit driver we're going to need to tape I think the MVP is gonna be a small little level that way we'll make sure all of our planes are straight and then I also marked out that I have 18 inches between each shelf so I'm not nervous nervous [Music] I've been building for a very long time well maybe four years not how long one thing I Bo's want to get him better and better at is getting tighter cuts and so I mean look at it staying there letting me do anything and that couldn't make me happier so focus on getting proper measurements and proper cuts to make sure everything is 1/16 if not less tight so that makes me happy as an OCD person [Music] hey can you show people how to upholster a cushion for the bank chair here sure thanks so it started the supplies we'll need our staple gun your upholstery material I use like a thick a winin fabric a foam piece of foam we used five inch foam pull it super tight and then fold over about an inch of the fabric on top and it just creates this like big barrier so the staple stay better so I'm going to use this handy dandy option right here that my husband has but if you have just a poster II stapler that works just fine my fear is gets to me sometimes okay once you have that all stapled you flip it over you see how nice and tight it is because we're installing the door faces to be concerted inside the face frames to get the perfect gaps I use the old playing card trick first wrap the tape inside the drawer to be able to pull it out later then use a deck of playing cards to make even gaps along the drawer face frames perimeter once perfectly gaped I marked out the holes for the drawer pulls secured the drawer face in place with screws and then pulled the drawer out using the tape and replace the screws with the hardware screws after drilling them out with an eighth inch drill bit [Music] hey thanks
