day new project we're getting back into home rental stuff because i know you guys have missed it today's project i want to do for a long time we're going to do mudroom lockers i do let me show you with my situation this is my existing mudroom uh here's the problem i work now here and so everything gets dusty um as you can see we have not enough shoe storage look at this this is my wife's this is just my wife's stuff i don't i don't know how often she gets to even wear this stuff um and of course you know there's not enough hooks so she's always stealing the kids and stuff it's just not fair everything gets dirty and aesthetically it sucks um and besides besides mine's broken so um well i mean i might as well build a new one then i mean i'm not gonna be silly walk around with a broken mudroom um let me finish demo on this take all the stuff off and i'll show you what i have and plan what have you done i will fix it i told you not i specifically told you not to ruin the wall oh my god is this i thought you i wanted something else well i'll fix it she's just jealous because she can't hang her stuff here anymore [Music] all right so here is the idea for the build nice big open we don't need a bench because that's really we realize that's just extra storage for my wife to leave her stuff there we're gonna have two drawers that pull out so the kids will share one and then mom and dad will share one we will have separate lockers though which is good got a little handle boom and then on top of it we're gonna have more cabinetry that we can just open they're going to be nice and big so let's get building so we broke the plywood this is just 3 4 inch maple plywood i bought three sheets i'm basically about 150 200 bucks into it my goal with this project is to be under 500 or at 500 we'll see how that works out i have plans they will be available on my website in january so you'll see all the dimensions let's get to cutting [Music] time [Music] so [Music] we need to create a toe kick and a toe kick is just basically a platform we're going to do this is a very dumbed down version i need to be two by fours that are pressure treated because this is a garage a lot of times i'll pressure wash the ground and i don't want it to rotten this stuff away um again i'm gonna have plants this is [Music] exciting [Music] all right how you like me now let's go find it's rightful place [Music] all right couple of things uh leveling is important if this part sucks it's not parallel to this wall the rest of the cabinets are going to be shot once they glam together and i got a nice surface here i'm going to drive some screws along the side so they're together in order to keep it in place i got these little shims we're going to secure with screws this cabinet carcass that's right into the uh pressure cheese two by fours [Music] good good oh yeah nail it all right now we're gonna secure it right into the studs and then we'll start putting the towers [Music] up [Music] what's gonna happen is if it's a little caddywonkas you're gonna have a hell of a time trying to get these doors built for them so this is just like a good reference mark to know that it's gonna be the same exact distance and set your screws and you go from there [Music] [Music] in the middle of the night i have this like epiphany of like is it epiphany epiphany i think it's epiphany uh anyways i had it and what came to me is thinking that in this design plan we need to have something that secures this against the wall to keep it from i'm gonna put it right in the back right there on both sides and then from this side we could secure it into the stud walls and then at the bottom will connect to the bottom base cabinet let's keep everybody safe [Music] like right here it'll be flush or plum and then over here it's about sticking out about a sixteenth of an inch because this wall as you can see is kind of wavy take maybe a knife find where the high spots are try to use a little love to push that drywall in so we're going to reference this wall you don't want to start making your doors later on in the process and they're all going to be kind of leaning to the side catch yourself before you prick yourself [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right so our uh behemoth [Music] got it in for the day the carcass is done it needs a face frame now typically face frames are done with pocket holes there would be two pocket holes going in there with pocket screws i wanted to do that i really did but because this giant mudroom locker is so big that would probably be the biggest phrase frame i'd ever make to date so improvise is important improvisation actually is important not improvised these should be sufficient two and maybe a quarter two and a half brad nails wood glue we're going to cut each piece do each individual line at a time make it easy let's have fun [Music] okay we got them all covered so we need to let it dry while it's drying perfect segue to start building the drawers oh [Music] um it's if it's not one thing it's another uh these screws they're protruding completely through and and the screw box specifically says one inch screws for half inch material it says right here uh i can salvage them by taking them out and then chipping them and then screw them back in it's an ugly fix but to fix second thing i want to tell you guys is this trim here needs to be put it got to be flush with this backboard um the doors will be uneven now so i have to figure out how to fix it so if you're gonna do this make sure there's a spacing between this cabinet and the wall so the hardware uh has to be full extension or else you're not getting your shoes um these are what are they they're about like what 15 16 bucks for a pair they have a weight limit of 75 pounds i don't think we have that much weight in shoes but these will be great we're going to install them make sure we use a nice good spacer elevation so it's nice and parallel [Music] i wish i could say that was the worst mistake i've ever had to fix if the the width or the depth of the the cubbies themselves were one and shorter this is a silly rookie mistake i made them 17 inches deep but if you made them 16 you could have gotten 16 inch strips out of it and you can use three get uh 16 inches deep and then i think you'll save quite a bit of money all right we're gonna start building our cabinet doors these are dimensions these are the rails these are called the styles when they go up and down like that the material that we're gonna be using is one by three and a select pine just because i think it's like a buck cheaper than poplar i have a good feeling it's going to be enough but we might have to return some and i'm okay with that did we miss anything i think that's all the cuts oh we still got six boards that's like 60 70 bucks so we just say oh we are saving money folks we're gonna use a router bit these are a kit that comes with it one creates the style the other one creates the rail they're gonna lock in like a puzzle [Music] piece [Music] typically you don't glue the center panel because it's raised but this is plywood plywood doesn't really have any wood movement [Music] yeah you're gonna have some holes yeah it's some joints aren't that perfect it's okay wood filler it's gonna fix it all all right just nobody cry there's a solution we'll get through it [Music] most important part the caulking between these cubbies or lockers why because irena's going to try to sneak her million coats through the other person's cubby you know it's just going to happen not today lady not today [Music] [Music] um i think i did something wrong i'm painting primer on the inside and i thought to myself how cool would be if the inside of the cabinets were that natural wood color and then outside of the cabinet would be this naval blue um well now it all has to be naval blue uh if you're gonna do the same thing same colors try the second way have natural inside and just navel on the outside i think look cool [Music] use a product that has a chemical called urethane emerald alkyd the whales explain too it's like an old days particle which is tough paint surrounded by a water-based molecule meaning you can like thin it out with water and shoot and spray it and then once the water evaporates it then just has the hardening oil-based paint kind of particle there so really tough paint that's what it translates to now before we start painting them uh we got to cut out those little uh hole slots for the the hinges there are little jigs like this very inexpensive about maybe 12 15 bucks it has exact thickness and the cutting bit of this part that goes in the back [Music] drawer faces um one issue they're recess right because we have a panel in there so we can't just put it up against it and then put our knobs or handles so so we have a little recess this is just a quarter inch paneling left over oh that's perfect so what i'm going to do is i'm going to cut out the exact dimensions of this put it in here maybe a little wood glue and then start securing it that way it shouldn't crack at us [Music] if you start drilling through here you're gonna have to tear out on the other side so we're gonna use a little stop block get yourself some of these bumpers we just stick them on the back here stick them on the bottom here and you got a nice soft bumper that's not going to ruin your [Music] paint [Music] our original budget for the mudroom lockers was around 500 bucks now to break it all down 400 was spent on plywood alone 100 was paint and primer roughly around 150 on all the hardware and 70 for the solid doors all in all the project was about 720 which puts us just a little bit over 200 budget which i think that's not too terrible [Music] hey thanks so much for sticking around watching yet another one of my videos you guys know it means the world to me if you bring the channel and you like videos like
