you wouldn't think that a young adult novel about cancer with a title based off of a Julia Caesar quote would hit the way it hits but it girl it hit it hit mama you [Music] [Applause] [Music] know hi hello how are you welcome back to my channel my name is Carly I hope you're doing well sit down relax kick your feet up because I'm coming off of two day migraine and feeling disassociated from my body who's jealous everyone and what better way to celebrate my comeback to planet Earth than by talking about the choke cold that John Green had on Tumblr in the 2010s right I got a lot of comments requesting this and I love when my audience knows what they want and also when suggest things specifically to me that I want to do sometimes people suggest stuff and they're like please I would love it if you did that and I'm like babe so sorry I don't want could not pay me could not pay me and while I gear up to finish part three of Riverdale I need to give myself little treats because honest to God every single time I film one of those videos it is a new trauma for me okay like it is physically hard on my body I'm lit I literally feel like a US Marine so really what I've done here as sifted through the archives of the internet to really take you through the rise the fall the triumphs of uh John Green the author on Tumblr specifically so let's get started hi I thought we'd just take a quick break and talk about this week's sponsor Aura I did a quick Google of my name the other week not important why and I found a lot of information about myself that I don't love and that's where Aura comes in in and helps data Brokers sell your information to people who send spam calls emails scammers and anyone else who may want to Target you personal information like email phone number home address can all be found on the internet and I hate that however with aura you can find out which data Brokers are selling your information and then Aura will automatically send opt outs so that you are completely excluded from the narrative this has been so nice I've been getting an illegal amount of spam calls and emails recently and cleaning up my information with aura not only helps me to reduce the amount of spam but it also helps protect me from hackers who could use that information to hack my social media accounts bank accounts other stuff like that I don't know if you saw this but AT&T revealed that over 73 million customer records both existing and former customers were released on the dark web they recommend that those affected users strong passwords monitor account activity and consider credit freezes or fraud alerts from credit bureaus with aura I get access to like antiviral VPN password management parental controls and identity theft management without having to download like 17 different apps it's all one affordable price super easy to set up and you might have one of those things already but only having one aspect is great but it's the equivalent of locking the front door and leaving the back door wide open so if you want to stop data Brokers from selling your personal information online you can go to aura.com UNC Carly to start your twoe free trial that's also linked in the description below it's aura.com un Carly all right let's get back to the video first we have to talk just about the choke cold itself I really think if you weren't on Tumblr specifically like ya book Tumblr at the time it's really hard to explain the Vibes it it is were were they amazing absolutely take me back right now to 2012 Tumblr we're talking about The Hunger Games you know we're talking about Harry Potter we're talking about the Fault in Our Stars life is good I haven't really hit puberty to a massive extent yet and therefore mental illness hasn't ravaged my brain Good Vibes all around I want to go back so two things to kind of convince you of my credentials the first one being that I have just been chronically online my entire life here I am here you know what I mean I just consider myself in some ways a Tumblr historian not in the fact that I actually create um archives for people to use uh other people do that for me and I thank them I will link Down Below in the description a couple of the like wonderful Tumblr archives that I Ed to make this video I just was online in a massive way in the 2010s Tumblr was kind of like Tik Tok and that everybody was on it creating content you were blogging you were creating jokes and memes that kind of thing but it was so private you could be Tumblr famous and not famous at all you know I have friends that have had like a 100,000 followers on their Tumblr but like no one knows them it's a beautiful social media that I miss dearly I know it still exists but I want The Vibes of being 12 on Tumblr I'm sorry another thing that I need to talk about is I I mean if you've been on this channel you know that I read okay I I'm I'm just very different than all the other girls and I love a book but I read a lot and I cannot really firmly communicate the impact that these books had on me as a reader I know a lot of people say that like oh well I read these days because of The Hunger Games or whatever but I do genuinely think honest to God I read I write I'm the person I am today because I read John Green books when I was a child so all that's to say if you're expecting an unbiased review that's not what this is going to be like I love John Green but I am going to go through all of the history absolutely but all that's to say I think that the books are good I stand by them and I love them okay we're going to go through a timeline of all the events in the way that I want to do on this channel basically what you need to know is that this was an ERA in the real world but also online it was the 2010s life was good we had we did not know the mess we were about to get into things felt possible you know so what are John Green books well they are written by the ya and now just plain old author John Green we'll get more into him as we go along this is not a definition I've pulled from online this is just a definition I feel in my soul they are contemporary young adult novels the target audience is basically like teenage girls like the Beatles [ __ ] okay they're very character focused they take place in like our Modern World plot is not so much a concern as these characters kind of going through their lives the characters themselves are teenagers and they deal with heavy issues such as death or grief mental health love those kinds of things there are romance elements in all of them um but they're not necessarily the focus it's very much like coming of age novels focusing on the lives of these teenagers they undermine the manic pixie dream girl Trope in a lot of ways I think people don't like really understand this a lot of times the main characters are young white teenage boys who fall in love with quirky girls that have like a thing about them they're characterized but the point of a lot of these novels is like do not idealize people you fall in love with the real people that kind of thing they're often very quotable and sometimes pretentious I don't mean this as an insult they just air on the end of like literary fiction for teenagers if that makes sense so they do not have like super fun plots and stuff to fall like there are plots but you know what I mean it's not about the plot in the way that something like the Hunger Games is about the plot it's truly just these characters going through their teenage lives and dealing with some kind of like abstract issue and how their relationships and their own views of the world change through that but they're also very like quotable the teenagers are always hyper hyper intellectual and are obsessed with poetry or literat or whatever they're very very smart the reason people sometimes say they're pretentious is cuz like the teenagers speak in the way that pretentious teenagers speak if that makes sense I'm going to read you some of my favorite quotes from these just so you get an idea of the absolute Banger after Banger you're receiving right the most popular John Green novel was The Fault in Our Stars which was made into a movie uh that launched Boom Clap by Charlie XCX into the hearts of millions you truly could not exit your home in the year year of 2014 I want to say without having Boom Clap the sound of my heart the beat goes on and on and on and on just kind of piped into your ears forcibly so here are some quotes you don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world but you do have some say in who hurts you I like my choices the only way out of the Labyrinth of suffering is to forgive a teenager says that right what a [ __ ] time is she screws everybody this is my favorite one in which Augustus Waters the character play by cancel Elgort in The Faults in Our Stars he puts a cigarette in between his lips but doesn't smoke it just to kind of create a metaphor it's a metaphor you see you put the killing thing right between your teeth but you don't give it the power to do its killing like that I'm sorry that's culture that's literature right there I think that some people would criticize these books for being like the teenagers are pretentious and they are hyper intelligent and they don't speak how a regular teenager speak spoke you know what I mean and to that I say like you just don't know what it was like to be a pretentious teenager because I was absolutely on the ground screaming at those quotes like as a teenager I was like I'm getting the Fault in Our Stars tattoo on the back of my eyelids like pretentious hyper intellectual teenagers do speak that way and that's just the that's just the facts I think the reason these books just blew up is not only because like it is this idea of literary fiction for teenagers something that isn't dystopian or romance which are often the like two genres that were definitely being marketed back then to teenagers it's just like a contemporary story just based in our world but also they were books that treated the teenage girl audience they had with like respect and saw them as like an intellectual audience that shouldn't be talked down to that want to learn and engage with these ideas that are like complicated you know when I was growing up the books that were available to me were like dystopian and fantasy and those often times while they did have romance elements they could have been like political or whatever but like it was about magic and I love that but like I'm not a magic girl so if you're not a magic different world girl really what was available to you as a like a young reader was romance and I think that the romance genre has some like outliers and especially nowadays absolutely fantastic books like you should have seen the way I Main Line the new Emily Henry book into the my eye sockets like I put it in a syringe and I put it in my eyeball I think that the romance genre when it comes to adults does have this subsection of books that like deal with relationships and love but also like how to move past horrible relationships like there's deeper sh there too right neurode Divergence whatever I don't really know if as teen girls in the 2010s we were fed that it was a lot of being like he's a bad boy at school and he punches the locker but it's actually because he has a dark secret and the secret is that his dad died in a car accident and you connect over listening to music through the the little one you each put a headphone in your ear like you know and that's fun did I read that absolutely but John Green books were books that I were able to read and feel like they were for teenage girls but treated us as like intellectually complex consumers that just like wanted to think about life if that makes sense so these books were like kind of a little bit depressing and maob But ultimately hopeful incredibly quotable it's a very like flowery language but in like a quotable sexy way where do they go to thrive absolutely Tumblr in the 2010s yes [ __ ] you could not scroll a single inch without seeing some kind of gift set from a John Green movie a quote from a John Green Book overlaid over top of like Harry and Louie from One Direction kissing some kind of like okay okay like sparkly GIF Mo like the the way in which John Green books permeated the online culture as a teenage girl in the 20110 cannot be overstated they inspired a lot of fanfiction just every everybody was requote was just reblogging quote after quote after quote it was there it was queer it was ready you know that doesn't make any sense but you know what what I mean and in addition to that John Green himself was on Tumblr he did a Tumblr account called fishing boat proceeds which is what you did on Tumblr you had a quirky little name in as your as your blog URL and he would reblog and engage with his fans and also just post about his life and funny musings and stuff like that John Green himself was is chronically online he has run a YouTube channel where he's basically uploaded a YouTube video weekly with his brother Hank Green which side note as an elder jenz I have never felt soing ancient I felt like I should be mummified and putting a sarcophagus in the ground when people were like oh John Green's Hank Green's brother Hank Green from Tik Tok do you know that John Green the author is Hank Green from Tik tok's brother I'm like [ __ ] do not quote the scripture to me I was there when it was written okay he Han crash Court I can't it I felt like I was lit was literally that woman from the Titanic being like it's been 75 years I felt ancient anyways John Green chronically online him and his brother Hank had been uploading on YouTube consistently for years at this point and he was very very involved not only with his own fan community on Tumblr but just kind of the Tumblr culture at large he was super super like invested in it and very available okay so he was traditionally published did not get like a book deal because of his online presence that like wasn't super thing yet even at this point um but he was able to like promote and promotee these books because he was online constantly and the fault Our Stars just like literally took off like somebody had lit a little Dynamite stick from you know like a Road Runner cartoon and it just [ __ ] exploded everywhere and he was able to grow his audience and he just became like super super famous like he became incredibly internet famous but also just kind of like a household name especially once the movies started being made he just became a very very famous person like when the faar Stars movie was announced on Tumblr like you simply had to be there it was like Misha op acopos in the the mopolis part two you know what I mean it was a moment in Tumblr history especially back then to be on the internet was like a nerd thing it was like an ALT thing I like kind of like Get cringed out talking about this which like I shouldn't I should invest like invite the earnesty of like a young me and the other people on the internet like being like we're weird and we're on the internet to connect and whatever but that's really what it felt like so John Green's success in the mainstream felt like a win for Tumblr like I haven't searched but I'm sure if you go online you can find some kind of tumblr post that's like John Green is getting a movie more like tumblr's getting a movie this is a win for Tumblr like that kind of thing okay now let's get into the timeline so I can explain to you just truly the timeline of not only John Green's public life as an author and a YouTuber but also also his relationship with Tumblr March 3rd 2005 his first novel Looking for Alaska is released this book follows a like teenager as he goes to a boarding school and it's very classic coming of age in that he falls in love with this girl who's at the boarding school named Alaska but it also just focuses on him like making good friends and getting into mischief and doing pranks and learning what it means to be like a person it's a very classic Coming of Age novel read in the pandemic again like it's great okay so it has romance aspects takes place from the POV of a of a young man I would argue that this is a very classic coming of age I think that John Green because his novels are like for teenage girls they're like Cen as romance and there's nothing wrong with romance again I want to say like the way I Mainline a contemporary romance into my hippocampus you know what I mean like I want to put it in my brain stem I just think that there's like they're called romances even though they're not they're like why Coming of Age stories okay the next year on September 21st 2016 an abundance of Catherine's his second novel is released this is my least favorite but I like them all and I've read them all and I have an encyclopedic knowledge of all of them and I don't remember this one as well as I remember the others but I think it is literally about a young man who goes to a small town and there's an abundance of Catherine and there's a romance plot I do remember from this story that there's a factory that makes the strings on tampons that's funny like I was 11 when I read that book and I remember tampon string Factory that's burned into my brain for the rest of my life because it's so specific and funny January 1st 2007 the Green Brothers John and Hank Green start Brotherhood 2.0 this was a YouTube Project in which they would upload short form content it's like five minutes that was what it was back in the day I can't explain the many iterations of YouTube to you although I'd love to they would record under five minute videos no longer text or call each other and communicate via that Weekly basically online okay this was the beginning of the Vlog Brothers their shared YouTube channel and basically the beginning of like a YouTube Empire and like honestly I do feel like the Green Brothers through like becoming consistent uploaders and uh we'll get more into like how they like absolutely slayed and created the business side of YouTube but they like create the archetype for like a modernday professional influencer which is wild October 2nd 2008 Let It Snow is released this was a novel written by three ya authors one of them being John Green I want to say one is Lauren myel I don't really know if that's how you pronounce it but iing slay that yes okay novel by John Green Lauren miracle miracle but with a Y and Moren Johnson [ __ ] in the tank right here from when I read it when I was 11 that's crazy so basically this is like a Love Actually ya holiday themed romance this was a big thing in ya contemporary back in the day where authors would like write a book together because you would have like you would combine your audiences you know if we got the Sally Rooney Zade Smith co-written novel The the world would stop on its axis you know what I mean like simply clocks would stop and the world would get sucked into a black hole like that's that Vibe basically a lot of ya authors had like a very very rabit following and you'd be like why don't I write a third of a book and you write a third of a book and then our other friend writes a third of a book and we put them all together and they create a book and then our fans our rabid Rabbid fans are happy so let it snow is basically Teen Love Actually where it's based on this is not this is from the again from my brain I'm looking at my notes this is not written there this is just from my encyclopedic knowledge of John Green literature where like it's based on like an improv format The Herald where you have these you start out with disconnected story lines and by the end all of the story lines fold in on top of each other and are interconnected right it's like a Modern Family episode It's Like Love Actually that kind of thing okay so these are all different storylines that take place in the same small town around the holidays I think it is based on either Christmas or New Year's but like there are different faiths involved and eventually they all collide together at a party I think it is yeah it is I am so proud of myself myself one of them is like a rock star gets stranded on the train and he is with like a nerdy girl and they fall in love another is like a guy is friend-zoned by his cool girl best friend and they fall in love and then I think another one is about the a friendship between two girls bro I should be the John Green historian this is just from the Dome did I read it absolutely when the movie came out on Netflix even though I was a full-fledged adult did I watch it yes and I think it was filmed in Canada because I knew a ton of people just from doing comedy in the city you're telling me I'm watching a John Green movie and I have to see Rodrigo Fernandez stall the comedian I know as like a Christmas Village vendor that's crazy moving on so let it snow is released October 2nd 2008 on October 16th 2008 Paper Towns is released so it's a pretty big release cycle for John Green at this point he has released a new book basically every single year except for 2007 but it's like the ya machine Let's crank these [ __ ] out the girls are rabbit so Paper Towns my favorite nobody's asking but it's my favorite follows a young man in he's like a teenager I don't know why I'm saying young man that sounds like I'm about to scold him in Orlando and he is in love with the girl who lives across the street from in who is kind of popular and quirky her name is Margot Roth spiegelman top 10 fake names in book books ever Margot Roth spiegelman no name has sounded more real but also is burned into the grooves of my smooth smooth brain in that way she's quirky and different and he kind of manic pixie Dream Girls her in his head then one day Margo shows up at his window and they go on this Whirlwind night of debauchery together and she disappears and he finds out afterwards that Margo is leaving these Clues to her new location so he and his friends try and figure out all these Clues to find out where she is [ __ ] th I should reread this cuz if this go so good so me at 13 Charles Dickens dead in aing ditch John Green has entered the chat Charles Dickens you better kill yourself you know what I mean like it's over it's quite simply over like would you believe that there's like I think there's a Woody Guthrie reference in these in this in Paper Towns there's a reference to like the Greek mythology Tale the Labyrinth and Looking for Alaska like a lot of these books deal with kind of like you know what I mean they want to be like intellectual for kids and kind of like these kids are cool it's very very much Perks of Being a Wallflower you're in the tunnel like this Heroes by David Bowie is playing you are infinite you know what I mean very specific choices of like adult media for teens so that teens can feel cool eat it up every time April 6th 2010 will Grayson will Grayson is released this is a book what's his name he's okay I can't say he's the gay author that's an insane thing to say I think his name is David David leathan God my M my mind's kind of a steel trap but he wrote two boys kissing every day he was like writing queer ya a fiction before it was like not like acceptable but you know what I mean like it wasn't marketable but like these books were like absolute bright spots for so many que people I know as adults anyways he also wrote Dash and Lily so theing rain and will Grayson will Grayson is about two different boys named will Grayson and again it's Harold night at the improv theater baby because you better bet that those two story lines they're going to overlap and I feel like there's a drag queen in it and he's a foot is it a football player yes iing Rock yes the offensive lineman on the football team is a drag queen oh so that's about it's like there's more queer elements CU one of the will Grayson is gay David leathan love and light love so up until this point John Green has basically been we're in Spring of 2010 Vibes are good I'm 10 what a great age to be and John Green at this point in his career is mainly like his two careers are very separate yes he is able to on YouTube promote his ya releases but people are just he's traditionally published people are just buying these books cuz he's in the ya circuit he is releasing these books with other popular ya authors that kind of thing right and on the other end of that he is a niche YouTuber right so in Internet circles in online circles he's popular then on July 9th 2010 the first VidCon happens the Green Brothers created VidCon if you can believe it or not I don't know I'm trying to stay offline a bit more in my life for my mental health and I find that like when I'm on Tik Tok all my conversations are like have you seen that Tik Tok so I'm just like not really online in the same way I used to be which is a tragedy in many ways but also very very good for my brain matter and I don't know if like VidCon is as influential as it was when I was a weel ass on the internet but VidCon is a YouTuber convention it takes place in California and it was a place for YouTubers to go and in the beginning it was literally just kind of like a networking Meetup kind of situation eventually it grew into these like massive massive fan events where huge like YouTubers from like the Brit crew or Tyler Oakley would do meet and greets and panels and all these kinds of things you know and there'd be parties and Dan and Phil would be there that it grew to this like massive massive thing the VidCon collab Vlogs you would get gifted to you in 2016 by like Zoella Beauty that's how we found out that Zoella and Alfie D were dating because in a Jim Chapman vlog this is a separate thing he was vlogging at VidCon and you could see that Zoe's screen saver was her and Alfie kissing the ones that know no is my brain full of absolute dribble yes why do you ask why do you ask the first VidCon happens this becomes like a massive massive surely million dooll right event in the future just started in a in a raw July 9th 2010 and I believe there was like a couple like maybe a thousand people it was a small small event but it grows from there and this is also I like to say is like a point in which YouTube as a platform takes off so we're going to really see like right after this how like the internet absolutely starts to devour his books if that makes sense like this is the beginning of like John Green Fame era he's entering it's like 1989 Taylor Swift okay because on January 10th 2012 The Fault in Our Stars is released like you can't you can't even fathom the culture is shifted there is only before Tios and after tifos the Fault in Our Stars follows Hazel Grace Lancaster she is a teenage girl who has cancer lung cancer I believe she doesn't have any friends because she doesn't go to school and her mother is worried about her so she makes her go to a cancer support group for teenagers there she meets Augustus Waters who is in remission and he's a manic pixie dream boy and together it's like they fall in love and learn about life and death and talk so much about like the existential dread and what it means to die and live oh [ __ ] like I was ready I believe that this was when I started actually like reading John GRE like checked in clocked into the John green army give me my musket please I'm ready to go this book became a besteller if not immediately like qu quite fast it had a lot of like traditional publishing marketing behind it in addition to John Green being considerably more famous at that point just from being online but it was just like pushed by the traditional publisher to hell and the girls we were ready for it you wouldn't think that a young adult novel about cancer with a title based off of a Julius Caesar quote would hit the way it hits but it girl it hit it hit mama you know the fault dear Brutus is not in the stars but in ourselves I think is what is what it is that was a pub quiz like thing the other day where they were like what Shakespeare play is the Falon R Stars the title based off of and I was like give me the buzzer because it's Julius Caesar [ __ ] like let me in coach because again one thing that's burned into the recesses of my brain John Green this book became incredibly popular it has one of still to this day I'm sure it's his most popular book I haven't checked the the stats on that but it was incredibly popular in the mainstream but also online it was an incredibly quotable book also just like Augustus is like again a manic pixie dream boy and that does that get peeled away and undermined yes but like I think that also the more heavy romance themes made it incredibly popular it's also just like a good book it was inspired by John's like friendship and like just kind of like mentorship with a like a teenager who's with a nerd fighter and nerd Fighters can't believe I'm explaining this to to you in the year of ourl 2024 is the name for like the fans of the Vlog Brothers of the Green Brothers you're a nerd fighter and the slogan is don't forget to be awesome that's how Earnest and lovely the internet was these days can you imagine a YouTuber now being like our slogan is don't forget to be awesome no the irony has seeped into the crevices of the internet in such a way that we cannot allow ourselves to be goofy and joyful online you could not torture me to create a slogan for this channel in that way because the internet has destroyed my brain absolutely but there was a young nerd fighter who was a fan of the Vlog brothers and she eventually died of cancer and because of that it inspired John to write this book it is great it's great there's no way around it and this made John Green like a full celebrity like as far as a ya author can be a celebrity he was a celebrity he like met Obama like like he was famous for an author in a in a in a big way he was mainstream famous not just internet famous then January 2012 the film rights for the faar stars are optioned babe we're making a movie we're going to Tinsel Town okay get in girls then start of 2012 January great Vibes the end we get the [ __ ] post I've talked about this on my moments in Tumblr history and I read this post in full and everyone was like that's crazy of you to read the post in full and I'm like is it is it you can't hurt me I'm going to read a full monologue about okay wait I have to explain this to you all throughout this point John Green is posting on Tumblr as fishing boat proceeds getting in on the tumbler discourse he was kind of seen as like the father of Tumblr he's with the kids and he's like whoa hey guys chill out you know what I mean engaged great now very similar to what I was saying about the ter nerd fighter and the slogan don't forget to be awesome meme culture on the internet started to shift around 2012 where before it was very much like Earnest plug copy and paste memes and stuff like that it's like aing cat with text being like I can has cheeseburger like that was what memes were back then and it was a beautiful time in 2012 it began to kind of become the irony Laden sarcastic unest hipster nastiness jokes that we have today I still like this like I'm again chronically online no insult to that here it's just that things turned from being super super Earnest to way more ironic right and this was the beginning of like social justice movements becoming super popular and a Mainstay of online culture so there's a thing called a call out post on Tumblr where basically people got called out for their problematic behavior and it was massive it's basically like you know canceling someone before it was called canceling but people in Tumblr loved two things to be kind of nasty and ironic and to use social justice language in an inappropriate way while this irony is like becoming a Mainstay John Green has always been Earnest he's an Earnest man who not only had continued to just like Foster this community of like Earnest people telling them to not forget to be awesome he was also very open and honest about his struggles with mental health um and being neurod Divergent girl you can't you can't be Earnest on the internet and talk about your struggles with mental health that's blood in the water to these [ __ ] like you are pouring a bucket of chum around you while swimming with the sharks you know this is when things started becoming tenuous online so on Tumblr you used to be able to edit posts so if I reblogged your post while I reblogged it I could edit it to make you say something completely different so it looks like you said something completely different people would do this with John Green posts a lot as like a joke there was also like kind of a meme that was like is that John Green where like he would post like a funny text post and there'd be massive discourse underneath it and people would be like wait is that John Green whatever somebody edited a John Green blog post to read I'm not going to read the whole thing but as follows is one of my favorite tastes not only that but balls smell amazing it makes me go a little crazy on it to be honest like I cannot get it far enough down my throat to be satisfied I'm only satisfied when I feel those intense powerful salty hot pumps of down my throat you get the vibe John greed is ackn just and we're going to get to that in a second is it bullying absolutely fully bullying also homophobic in many ways being like it's stupid it's funny cuz it's gay it's funny cuz it's because cuz he because it's making it seem like he's gay and being gay is bad the [ __ ] post is made in 2013 the Tumblr blog your fave is problematic posts a complete call out post list of all of John Green's past transgressions the your fa is problematic blog girl dumois for the Tumblr generation basically would compile these massive post with links to all of the problematic stuff that famous people did what's some of them I I screenshotted it it's taken down now the blog is absolutely um wiped clean and also I remember reading a while ago that the Creator like the anonymous creator of this blog like wrote an essay for the New Yorker being like this is what it was like to run an anonymous blog that called out celebrities I don't know he asked people to Fat shame him on his uh YouTube videos to encourage him to lose weight they made a like fundraiser event called Hano DEA which um was making fun of Cinco Deo commented on how nerd women are an underutilized romantic resource there's a lot of them but oh and then they also said like what a [ __ ] time is she screws everybody and a quote from his book un abundance of Catherine's she was incredibly hot in that popular girl with bleached teeth and anorexia kind of way which was Colin's least favorite way of being hot um so stuff like that you know I think that a lot of those book quotes are kind of like taken fully out of context I can't comment on the hanko Deo CCO Deo thing because I'm not Mexican I don't celebrate CCO Deo but I think this kind of shows the the end the era of the internet and how the tides were kind of turning against him online it is very similar to how things are now where like somebody gets famous and you're like okay who's going to go through their old tweets like I feel like I shouldn't say I like them until we get all the information but Tumblr specifically because people hadn't learned like to not be on online in a painful way like we were learning how to like be online you could compile these like 18 point bullet point lists um about every single problematic thing that somebody has said um John Green went and I believe for a lot of these apologize I don't really know like the full story there but I will say like surely there's some real things that need to be addressed here but a lot of them are being like the teenage boy in your book said [ __ ] what do you have to to say for yourself you know however that was in April oh wait I thought when I've written this I've written that March comes after April and that's just not true March is before April but we'll just okay so on March 19th shanen Woodley is cast as Hazel Grace Lancaster in the fall in Our Stars on May 10th 2013 anel El Gort AKA cancel El Gort AKA my enemy is cast as Augustus Waters October 26th this same year 2013 the fall in Our Stars starts filming in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania movie would I would you believe me if I told you William defo is in this would you believe me if I told you that William defo is in the faon Our Stars playing Peter Van huon a recluse author in Amsterdam [ __ ] would you believe you shouldn't you wouldn't you wouldn't believe me also Mike biglia plays the leader of the cancer support group and he plays a man with one ball a Christian with one ball who plays the guitar this movie has everything girl Laura d as a mother Mike Berbiglia with one ball William defo Nat wolf playing blind it's got everything girl like this movie is very fun I said this before but it introduced Boom Clap by Charlie XCX into the cultural discourse Again song literally feels like I I can't listen to Boom Clap still cuz I heard it enough in 2013 you know like I've heard it enough but God I love this movie it's great um they they began shooting in Pittsburgh and then eventually shot on location in Amsterdam cuz spoiler aler they go to Amsterdam [ __ ] you got to get Peter Van hooton get in girls we're contacting the recluse author of Hazel Grace's favorite book Peter Van hooton played by William defo I love this movie starts shooting at at the end of August wraps mid October October 16th just a moment in culture on October 21st 2013 John Green makes the minion post um where he says Tumblr you've been nice today so please enjoy the cutest thing I've ever seen again this is I think part of the reason I'm doing this timeline is to really highlight how bullying and nasty Tumblr was to kind of earnest people in the 2010s and the shift from the internet being an Earnest place for nerds to like a place for mean nerds to bully love both inertion of it but it's interesting but like I do think bullying is bad absolutely this minions thing is fuing testing me like I'm sorry I'm tested right now God gives his toughest battles to his strongest Warriors but the minions are Hazel Grace and Augustus from the fault Our Stars so one of the minions has this pipe thing you know that thing that's like a picture of a pipe and it's like this is not a pipe cuz it's a picture of a pipe she's wearing a t-shirt of that and an oxygen tank and the other one has has put the killing thing between its minion lips but doesn't give it the power to do its minion killing and they're saying okay okay the famous quote from this book because in this book you should just [ __ ] read the book and see the movie this couple would always say to each other always always you know what I mean like I ask you if we were a couple always and you'd say always being like I love you always and they were saying that their version of that will be okay okay a literature so October 24th 2013 the minions the fault and Our Stars drops internet time space continu and rips a bit January 19th 2014 the faon Our Stars trailer drops this is crazy right I'm just thinking about I didn't think about this NE that turnaround is kind of insane like that's 3 months since they wrapped filming they of the trailer like that's is that not fast to edit a movie anyways to be on the platform tumblr.com when the fault and Our Stars trailer dropped you don't understand you just won't understand what it's like you know what I mean you just weren't there you you're never going to get it and that's okay just it was the best it was the best it was the best of times it was the worst of times that same year as things often work June 6th 2014 the fonar Stars movie is released Bas sat in the cinema in the in the Maryland Cinema watching it really realizing for the first time in my life that I was going to die okay cuz this is 2014 so I'm beginning to become quite mentally ill CU puberty is ravaging my brain so I remember this is true watching the faer stars in the movie theater on opening weekend and being like Oh my God I'm going to die and everyone I know is going to die and there's no afterlife so what's the point I had that thought in the theater that's insane okay August 20th 2014 the rip John Green meme um hits the internet basically somebody post posted a pencil drawing of John Green but basically they said like rest in peace John Green you'll be missed and he's alive and then people would be like what what are you talking about John Green's alive and then somebody be like that's really disrespectful John Green died it's really up you could say it's funny March 24th 2014 John Green announces via Twitter that Nat wolf of the Naked Brothers Band is going to play Q the main character of Paper Towns the Paper Towns movie girl I was ready so we know that Paper Towns is getting and we got Nat wolf who played a more kind of like supporting character in The faar Stars yes we had a Naked Brother Band in the faar stars as well opposite William defo he's playing Q now great July 2nd 2014 the falar Stars bench is stolen in Amsterdam there's a bench that they sit and kiss on in the Fon Our Stars they kiss a lot of places in the Fon Our Stars bed bench and Frank house the range these two girls have you wouldn't believe it they kiss on a bench and the bench got stolen after the movie was released where is the bench is a great question has it been recovered I'd love to know what are you going to do with the bench you're going to put the bench in your apartment I love the effort though September 16th 2014 Cara delvine Miss eyebrows herself is announced to be playing Margot roths beagle men she was a Tumblr girl like she was not on Tumblr but her and her eyebrows and her mascara us on Tumbler this was a win you know what I mean like this was we were like the Tumblr the okay great Good Vibes great casting Choice December 4th 2014 there begins to be a meme on Tumblr that John Green is the Zodiac Killer before people said that Ted Cruz was a Zodiac Killer which have you ever seen the Zodiac Killer and Ted Cruz in the same room I haven't it's just interesting basically people would just be like John Green is a Zodiac Killer and this came from if you would go on the Zodiac Killer's Wikipedia page for some reason it would say at the top his name was John Green and then it would link to the to John Green's Wikipedia so people were saying like I'm just saying where was John Green when the Zodiac murders were happening do we do we know does he have an alibi okay November 3rd 2014 Paper Town starts filming in North Carolina I just got simply too excited about John Green being the Zodiac Killer I skipped ahead it wraps on December 19th 2014 and again a fast turnaround but on March 19th 2015 the Paper Towns trailer drops I got to rewatch this movie but girl I love it I think it has one of the guys from Euphoria in it I don't really remember this one as much just cuz I recently watched the vaar Stars sometimes the point of having a partner is to make him sit on the couch and Mainline John Green content with me so Paper Towns is next he's going to come home and I'm going to go sit on the on the C on the couch we're streaming John Green okay June 12th 2015 John Green Leaves Tumblr he makes a post detailing why which I will read from I think if we are going to you know water it down to a couple of reasons the bullying and the mentions of him were quite constant at this point people were continuing to edit posts of his um and post editing privileges did get taken away not because of that just because it's a [ __ ] crazy thing for a website to have at this point on Tumblr important little Wrinkle in this story it was being alleged that and I can't say this word on the channel I hate when people have to say different words on the online but I'll get demonetized they were saying that John Green essayed kids he was a PDF file you know so he had to defend himself against the implication that he was that basically there was a tide turning on Tumblr where people were like why does John Green respect teenagers why is he on Tumblr talking to teenagers he must be a predator so he says that he does not throwing that kind of accusation around a sick and liolis and most importantly damages the discourse around actual victims when you use accusations of as a way of insulting people whose work you don't like you trivialize abuse points were made I'm tired of seeing the language of social justice important language doing important work misused as a way to dehumanize others and treat them hurtfully I think at this point it's impossible to continue to use Tumblr the way I have since 2011 my life is different in ways that are both good and bad this community is different in ways that are both good and bad and the world is different in ways that are both good and bad if this blog begins to look more oneway with more original content and less reblogging commenting answering asks that's why also I'm not anger or anything like that it just needs a distance for my well-being we're also going to get when he returns to Tumblr later spoiler alert so some perspective on the post but basically also around this time he had said like I have to address the post cuz I got like 20,000 reblogs you know internet bullying we love it basically saying like it is homophobic to insinuate that loving is in some way funny and if this post makes you feel like your sexuality is being trivialized I'm sorry about that I do think unfortunately now we know from years of celebrities being bullied on the internet leam Michelle did it best like the best way to kill a joke is like play into it she's like I can't read and we're like I hate this joke now but we don't know that now okay so he leaves Tumblr July 24th 2015 the Paper Towns movie is released this release date got moved around quite a bit uh but finally July 24th 2015 two days after I turned 16 baby right does that make sense the math I don't know yes Paper Town's movie released in theaters loved it this was not as critically like critically cled is the wrong word it wasn't as popular as the fault Our Stars movie it never was going to be it didn't it's not as popular as the fa Our Stars as a book but we loved it I was there I watched opening weekend because one thing about me John Green has one fan it's me John Green has no fans I'm dead we know this then we enter what I have titled in this timeline the reputation era um we hear a lot less from him he is like working on other stuff but he's a lot less online he's a lot less plugged into internet culture um and he's just kind of doing his own thing still uploading throughout this whole thing uploading on the blog Brothers Channel but you know what I mean he's being less accessible to the greater population on October 10th 2017 Turtles all the way down is released to get a new John Green Book like 5 years or like after the Fault in Our Stars life was good oh baby it we were sitting pretty it was just so much fun it was a real fun time to be able to read a John Green Book like the weekend it got released whatever this book follows a young woman who is dealing with OCD and how it's ruining or running her life we'll say and she becomes involved with this rich kid and eventually ends up going on this treasure hunt to find a ton of money it's great I enjoyed it a lot and I've heard a lot of people say that it's a very very realistic depiction of how OCD actually feels and affects the people that deal with it this is because John Green deals with OCD himself and writing this book was a way of sending a message to his younger self eventually that everything will be okay and the pain that you were feeling right now will eventually not feel so present October 18th 2019 a Looking for Alaska miniseries is released people had been asking for a Looking for Alaska movie basically since the fault Our Stars got optioned but somebody had bought the rights and was letting it like rot in development hell so you couldn't like resell it with renewed interest because whoever had bought it before the fa Our Stars had taken off uh was just like sitting on it and it wasn't going anywhere I think eventually those rights were either sold or expired and somebody else bought them so it was a Hulu miniseries people were really excited I also do just think in general miniseries and like TV shows are like a better format for adapting books just cuz you get more time to like sit in the plot I didn't watch all this cuz at this point unfortunately I was an adult and it just wasn't hitting the same do you know what I mean like I wanted to like it but I was like I'm not teenager anymore it's not for me which is horrific but I'm not like a 45-year-old man who sees a person of color in a Star Wars film and decides to dox them because I'm no longer 12 and the movies don't hit the same at some point in 2020 well first of all pandemic happened we know this we love this oh baby John Green becomes obsessed with tuberculosis okay I know did you think that tuberculosis was going to enter the chat you might not have he does a lot of great work with tuberculosis even to this day I will link one of his Charities um down below it's like a great cause and through watching his YouTube videos I learned a lot about tuberculosis in that it's curable but like one of the most deadly diseases in the world because healthc care doesn't work correctly and therefore the medicine in like Africa is 10 times more expensive than it would be here bad taking a strong stance against that that's bad but he becomes obsessed with tuberculosis and I if you're kind of catching the vibe he also seems like less concerned with um becom BEC a popular author now he's actively kind of rejecting Fame and letting the fame that had grown from the faar stars and these movies kind of die down a bit on May 18th 2021 the anthropomorph scene reviewed is released this is a non-fiction Adult Book basically it was based on his podcast that he has where he reviews different aspects of The Human Experience so it'll be like I'm reviewing the concept of music or whatever or grass things that are kind of like intrinsic to Human Experience I haven't read this but I have it and I just it's one of those things in my brain where I'm like once I read that then I won't have read then I won't have a John Green book to read do you know what I mean so I just have it in my TBR pile for like years at this point December 2022 John returns to Tumblr to promote awesome coffee club which is a coffee company that donates 100% of its profits to charity and distributes like ethical coffee when he returns to Tumblr he addresses in July of 2023 so we're getting close to the modern timeline the co post John Green quit Tumblr because of the co monologue no he didn't this all happened a long time ago and my memory isn't perfect but here's my memory the monologue certainly hurt my feelings but when people are trying to force someone out of a virtual space they sometimes resort to behavior that is similar to bullying except it's not completely identical to bullying because the person they're making fun of has a lot of power as someone who got bullied a lot in school the feeling was similar in 2014 but it wasn't identical because I was aware of the fact that I was okay and that what was in danger was certain aspects of my identity self value that I treasured but not my entire personhood itself anyways it hurt my feelings and still hurts my feelings when I see it shared it feels to me like a joke about my sexuality although I understand that other people don't see it that way but yeah you don't know much about my sexuality and I don't really want you to but it makes but it feels like a joke about that to me which just bums me out fair but all of that stuff is a side effect of my job and having been successful at it and I like my job it is a great job all jobs have aspects that suck my job has fewer such as aspects than other jobs I've had so yeah I did not quit Tumblr because of the monologue I also did not ask Tumblr to make reblogs uneditable I quit Tumblr because a few people started to make extremely specific threats one might for instance send me an ask that featured a Google Street View screenshot of my home alongside a plan for breaking into it I was super scared of these people or possible person pretending to be a few people because they seem to have a lot of knowledge about me and my family we lived in a normal middle class neighborhood in Indianapolis and I felt very exposed and nervous at the time in my real life and eventually the freakout feelings just got too big and that's why I quit Tumblr edited to add I'm aware that prominent people sometimes use death threats against them to portray themselves as victims and protect themselves against Justified criticism for their bigotry or abusive Behavior or whatever I don't want to do that it's important to note that I have a lot of resources and power and so was able to for instance move to decrease the threat which a lot of people can't do but I also feel like not talking about the experience honestly has not really helped me or anyone I should have quit Tumblr much earlier I needed to realize Iz that the people weren't comfortable with me in their virtual space and that to them I came across as cringey or even creepy but at the time I wasn't nearly self-aware enough to leave for any of those reasons and plus there was a lot of pressure from movie studios Etc to stay on the social internet so I could continue to promote my books and stuff around them so I didn't quit when I should have and as a result I had and caused quite a few negative experiences for people I'm sorry about the role I had in causing those negative experiences I should have had a better understanding of not just how I experienced myself but also how other people might have experienced me that's something I've worked on over the years but still come up short on sometimes so basically says it all it's very wordy I feel like I I don't need to say more on April 16th 2014 recently John Green says that he has written his last ya novel in an Instagram post it is an Instagram like real in which she's referencing a Variety article in which he talks about how he has probably written his last ya book Never Say Never and all that stuff but it's not something that he's interested at the point when he was finishing Turtles all the way down it was stressing him out so much and he had gone away to a cabin to write the ending and he was like pulling his hair out and sobbing and all these things and it was basically like killing him emotionally like he couldn't figure out how to end it and eventually he ended it by jumping forward in time which is not something that is often done in ya ya is most often told like in the current present kind of thing of being like I did this and I'm doing this because you want to read from like a teenager's point of view if that makes sense not like an adult telling a story of what happened to them when they were a teenager but for this story to end he moved forward in time and to him that felt kind of like a closing of the door but kind of Storytelling he's still going to write and do things and be present online but he's just stopped writing ya crushing to me but I also understand I also think like doing anything for almost 20 years is a long time to do anything if I was an accountant after 20 years I'd say I might be done being an accountant in the same way you might write ya novels for 20 years and be like I'm done I think on May 2nd 2024 the turtles all the way down movie is released I haven't watched it because my mom has locked me out of our crave which I believe is where it's on in Canada but I plan to once I get in to the Crave again that's I'm get that's my plan so what does it all mean as I said before it's worth noting that I am not an unbiased resource I do really enjoy these books and movies and they are like a big part of like my teenage identity downfall is like a very catchy word but it's like not really a downfall cuz can it be a downfall for somebody to like realize the limits of their ability to deal with being famous and choose instead to like be present in their children's lives I don't know but he definitely became less famous and that's for a couple of reasons when his books became Super Famous they almost basically spawned off its own genre of like Jean green novels Jean that's French for John Green by the way where it's the same aspects we talked about where it'd be like a contemp temporary novel about teenagers like dealing with death or existentialism or whatever they're really popular and things just like eventually change like Trends change and what readers want change also his core readership grew up as I did and everyone else did and even you could still have like really fun memories of something and not be like engaging with it on a daily basis so Trends change readership changed he also didn't write for like five years or didn't release a book for like 5 years after the Fault in Our Stars you could really like for sure capitalize off of that super like the the amount of publicity that the faon Our Stars and the movie and everything was getting I think he was probably busy doing the movie for that in Paper Towns and also it's a lot of pressure like Michael Cunningham is an author who wrote the hours and won the Pitzer for it and then didn't write again for 10 years like I relate I get it if I won the Pitzer I would be paralyzed with expectation and fear I don't upload on YouTube a lot because I'm worried that I'm going to make a video that no one likes like I'm not like Ming after the fault AR stars did any right for a long time like I get it but there was less content as well as it was going along there was less books for us to read and less movies for us to watch so that's also going to fade away the energy of the internet completely changed and it went from this incredibly Earnest place that loved the more like pretentious lit ficky elements of these books to being something that saw them as like cringy and not ironic or nasty enough also just whenever you become popular um people will engage with your content that don't have critical thinking skills this is a big reason I find it hard to like U make content about books now um is because I would recommend a book like um like my year of rest and relaxation biot Tessa mve love that book people don't always like it and that's valid you can just say like I fully just didn't like it it wasn't for me that's a valid opinion you can say you can have issues with it specifically if you want to but somebody had said like online I hate that book because it's about a privileged girl and you're like right okay so that's the theme you can be like I don't like reading books about privileged white girls who are rich fair but to say I don't she's too privileged and the author's unaware of that is wrong because the theme is about privilege like the book is quite simply about that so with John Green books who often aimed to undercut the manic pixie dream girl elements of a lot of content made for teen girls when those books get read on a large scale also for young people who haven't necessarily gained critical thinking skills yet a lot of people were like it's manic pixie Dream Girls you're like no that's the theme what you stumbled upon is the theme dear boy so that's another thing at the end of the day I honestly think it's like tall poppy syndrome or he got womaned you know where he was very very present very Earnest very open online about his struggles with mental health and neurode Divergence and just kind of like a dork online and that a crime I guess it's a crime to show weakness and joy and it's a crime to be Earnest that's the lesson we should all learn today don't do it it's not good right and those things this is like what tall poppy syndrome when you think of somebody like Jennifer Lawrence who was so so popular and then people were like she's annoying people used to be with Jennifer Lawrence like she's so relatable and funny and then the tides eventually turn and they go like she's annoying and she's trying too hard the things that people love about you so quickly become the things that people weaponize against you so the fact that he was heavily ingrained in Internet culture and this Earnest nerd became the things that people hated and drove them off the internet seems like now everything's died down enough the reason I was thinking about this a lot is because the turtles all the way down movie was coming out and he was doing a lot of press and I was just seeing so much John Green in a way haven't in years and it was really nice and it feels like because we're kind of farther away from the Tumblr era and he's learned his lesson and is just not going to be ever present and accessible he can just like Post online about and it's nice to see him and he's seemingly committed to eradicating tuberculosis worldwide which is good a good cause so that is my deep dive into the lore of John Green the Chokehold that John Green had on internet culture and Tumblr culture at large in the 2010s I had so much fun going down this Rabbit Hole thank you so much for watching if you watched and other than that I'll see you soon bye
