Just gonna throw this out: 10 OUT OF FUCKING 10.
I ABSOLUTELY L O V E EVERYTHING about this song:
That downstroking opening riff coupled with the harmonizing lead guitar. Ahhhhhh so eargasmic.
The inflating balloon sound at 0:30 leading into the main body of the song. I dont even know what it is making that sound but I love it.
The haunting lyrics detailing the the truly horrific thing that is war. Especially the line "21, only son, but he served us well". They don't care about the fact that thousands of living breathing humans are dying without a reason.
The interlude containing the solo. I like the riff a lot, and the solo is the least flashy of the album, a nice switch up.
"I WAS BORN FOR DYINNNNNNNGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!"
One thing I would change though, is the lyrics in the last 'soldier boy' verse. Since the previous lyrics were told from the soldier's point of view rather than the officer's, I would word it like this: "Soldier boy, made of clay, I'm now an empty shell / 21, only son, but I served them well / Bred to kill, not to care, do just as they say / Finished here, greetings death, I'm yours to take away". They did it in And Justice For All so I dont see why it wouldn't work here.
The BACK TO THE FRONT part leading up to the ending riff. And then the way said riff seemingly ends...AND THEN COMES BACK WITH A VENGEANCE! Then it actually ends :(
Tl;dr, it's one if the best songs of all time ever and it is a solid 10/10.
One of Kirkβs best solos - a true highlight of the album!
I WAS BORN FOR DYIIIIIIING
love lars' drumming on this song
Always loved the lyrics on this one.
My favorite Metallica song, brilliantly orchestrated raw energy that has immaculate transitions.
What a fun song to learn on the guitar too. Nothing more fun than the kid picking Enter Sandman in the local guitar store, then you bust out this badboy :)
This guy's reaction to the song for his first time is very fun to watch - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_zK_c_oLJc
Itβs good for the first 6min but then the back in the front just feels repetitive tbh
10/10
One of their finest songs
This song is so freaking good. Every riff in the beginning is awesome. And I love the chorus: βBACK TO THE FRONTβ
