[Music] hi there this is harry and welcome back to my english lessons and i try to help you to get a better understanding of the english language we do that by looking at the grammar phrasal verbs expressions different way in which you can express yourself so what am i going to talk to you about today well i thought i'd look at the expression i agree just two simple words i agree but it gets a little boring to repeat them all the time so we'll try and look at different ways in which you can use that and get the same message across when you're using it sometimes it will be in a formal setting and in other ways it'll be quite informal so when you want to use it in a formal setting it could be in some form of a job interview or discussions in work some round table discussions that you have with your colleagues your boss whoever it might be so you might use more business like english and then in a family situation or talking with your friends in the cafe wherever it might be we'll use something a little bit more informal so what i'm going to do i'm going to go through a list of them with you okay one by one and then i go back to them and i'll hopefully give you some examples that help you to understand how and where and when to use them okay so let me start absolutely agreed that's right exactly i hear you i'll second that i'll give you that that makes two of us same here this is it or that's it you said it you're telling me and finally you took the words right out of my mouth okay so when you're using some of them that it will all be to do with the intonation as to where you put the stress because that will get the message across that you really are in agreement with somebody so i'll stress those as i as i go through them okay so let's take the first one absolutely so you can use this in just one simple word absolutely so somebody is telling you something and you really want to agree it with them so you just say oh yeah absolutely that's exactly what i think absolutely or we can use absolutely as part of a phrase so for example if you're discussing something with somebody and you say yeah absolutely that's exactly what i wanted to say or absolutely i'm in full agreement with you so you can incorporate it in some other words but you know as i say it stands alone just as one word absolutely and depending on how much stress you put on it will tell the other person how much you're in agreement with them absolutely or oh yeah absolutely really really so you can put the stress wherever you want it there to emphasize how much of an agreement you have with the other person okay so simple word agreed yeah now this will very definitely be formal english you know so you're sitting in a meeting there's you know six or seven of your colleagues around the table somebody's reading out some documents some marketing blurb whatever it might be and little voices would be heard agreed agreed agreed yep so just sort of like ticking a list and it's just a way of somebody saying yep that's right yeah that's right and then if somebody doesn't agree they say no hold on a minute yeah so agreed tick agreed take someone with box ticking or ticking list and yeah agreed agreed so if you're going down through a schedule perhaps for a launch of a new product you know have we got the marketing blurb agreed the date agreed invitations agreed so step by step by step by step okay okay so let's move on then to the next word exactly and a little bit like the word absolutely we can use it on its own or we can use it in conjunction with some other words in sentences so somebody says something at the meeting and you just want to agree they look around and you say exactly that's what i wanted to say absolutely yeah exactly so they they have a very similar way you can use them or if you want to include it in another sentence yeah exactly right that's exactly the what i wanted to do that's exactly the way i would have approached the problem that's exactly what i would have said in the same situation yeah okay so you're just reiterating you're agreeing with the person you're not in your head your body language will be telling them that in every other way you agree with them exactly okay so the next on the list is i hear you now depending on how you say this where you put the stress it can have different meanings so remember we're trying to look at ways in which you can say i agree so when we want to agree with somebody and we want to use these words i hear you the best way to say it is like this yeah yeah here yeah that's really really a good idea i hear you that's really really clear so i get the message and that's exactly what we should do yeah but if you put the stress in the wrong place it comes across if you're a little bit annoyed or a little bit aggressive because perhaps somebody is constantly asking you something like for example i hear you just yeah just stop leave it so something you might say to the kids when they keep asking when's dinner what's to eat when we're gonna get there yeah yeah yeah i hear you stop stop stop but we want to show an expression how we agree so yeah yeah i hear you yeah that's really really clear yeah so i hear you okay so the next expressions are quite formal uh i'll second that or i'll give you that so how do we use those well when we say i'll second that it's usually in a meeting where somebody wants approval for something so you know they want to get approval for an increase in the budget or they want to get the approval to hire some new staff or they want to get an approval to spend some additional money so they're looking around the table for agreement so you or the colleague will say yeah i'll second that meaning i agree with that i support that idea and then other people will row in behind yeah yeah yeah let's do that and then eventually it's ticked and everything is done so when we use i'll second that quite formal meaning approval so if you ever go to a committee meeting it could be your qriket club it could be a football club and if there's a committee sitting at the top of the room and they're looking to pass the agenda or pass the minutes of the the meeting the chairman will say well somebody uh agree with this statement and somebody from the audience will put the hand and say yeah yeah i'll second that meaning they're giving the approval for everything to proceed so it's quite quite formal now the other way of saying it is i'll give you that slightly less formal okay so when you say to somebody i'll give you that it means you agree with the point that they're making so you could be having a debate or an argument with with your colleague and he makes a very valid point and you say yeah yeah i'll give you that that's that's true i should have thought about that so when we use the expression i'll give you that even though you may not be agreeing with everything else they've said you're going to agree with that particular part of the statement yeah i'll give you that okay so the next expression is that makes two of us okay so what on earth does that mean well that makes two of us means at least there are two of us in the room that agree with it now there may only be two of you in the room so you you're just agreeing with your friend or your colleague or your wife whoever it might be yeah so they're complaining about something they're making a point about some political issues that they've heard on the news or the issue to do with the pandemic and they say oh god i'm just completely fed up with this working from home i'm fed up with constantly looking at these four four walls that makes two of us i mean so you immediately agree so you don't have to say anything else you're just not in agreement using these words to to support whatever the the position of the person is and it may not be anything so serious you know it just means that you're agreeing with them yeah all right let's go out for a meal even if it's a takeaway in the current situation why are we going to cook every night i'm fed up yeah yeah that that makes two of us i'm fed up as well so let's go out grab something sit in the park bench eat it and get home okay so that makes two of us okay so the next on the list slightly more informal same here or the same here so when do we use it well when we're using same here again just a broad agreement on what anybody has said so you know talking about all the sport that's on tv if it's not cricket it's football it's not football it's cricket and now we're into snooker there's no end to it i'm just fed up with this sports sports sport same here i wish they would put some decent programs on the tv that have a general approval there we could sit down and watch some really good movies don't you think that's right yes same here i think that's the best way to have it yeah and while we're on the subject what about all of these computer games that the kids play hour after hour just fed up with that as well yeah same here it's time we moved on so same here just broad agreement general agreement yeah i agree with what you're saying same here next point same here so agreement and you're nodding and agreeing with your your friend your colleague whoever okay so the next example we have is this is it or that's it and they both have a similar meaning again very very informal so it's just again broad agreement that you have with whatever somebody is saying so they're talking about let's say all the shops are closed and the only shops that you have open at the moment are supermarkets and it's a little bit boring to be wandering around the supermarket and sometimes it's not so practical because you have to get to work or you have to get the kids to school and you're saying to your friend yeah but i don't know when i'm supposed to do it yeah well this is it i mean what are we supposed to do you know we we can get a home delivery but when the guys come to your home they've forgotten half the stuff so you have to order it again and this is supposed to be the age of modern technology but they don't seem to get the simple things right yeah this is it yeah that's it i i fully agree so you know we have to make some change so we should just go on the site and give them a bad review and that that would sort it out yeah this is it this is the the way to do it so this is it something a little bit more informal but broad agreement with whatever your friend is saying okay next on my list is you said it yeah so again this is really emphasizing in an informal way your support for whatever statement your your friend wife boyfriend whoever has said you said it yeah okay so you're really yeah you said it so somebody's on a little bit of a rant yeah they're on their soapbox and they're making statements about oh this government i mean really really if i could go out tomorrow i'd take them all and lock them in a room and see how they feel about being in lockdown for month after month after month yeah you said it go for it girl that's the way yeah yeah so you're emphasizing you're egging on the person to to get perhaps a little bit more excited about their political views but it has the point of agreeing with them yeah you said it that's the way to do it telling me and then in a little bit more informal way the next expression you're telling me and again here we have to make sure we emphasize it and we put the stress in the in the right place it's not just you're telling me it's quite boring you're telling me that's you know you're really agreeing with them yeah because you know you're telling me it's uh it's obvious but you're telling me means yeah i agree just what i was going to say you're telling me yeah so again when they're on their soapbox they're having a little bit of a rant about the local school they're looking for more contributions from the parents and you know this is just one call after another email oh we need to have this we need some extra money if you could contribute and then the next week oh yeah we're doing this a little bit of fundraising don't you get fed up with all these demands for money money money you're telling me every time i open my email it's somebody looking for something yeah okay when is it going to be our turn so you're telling me a way of agreeing yeah just but again make sure you use it in the right way you're telling me so you've got to put a little bit of sarcastic twist on it okay you're telling me that's exactly what i was thinking okay and last on my list is a long expression you took the words right out of my mouth well for those of you who are into your music you might remember this as a the words of a very very famous song by meatloaf and if you don't know it you should look it up because it's a really really good song i think it comes from his album butter hell okay you took the words right out of my mouth [Music] so when we use that expression you took the words right out of my mouth you agree with somebody but it's something that you were just going to say so oh you took the words right out of my mouth that's just what i was going to say so whatever your friend has said whatever your husband your boyfriend whoever the children yeah yes i agree with you fully that absolutely you took the words right out of my mouth look you took the words right out of my mouth okay so there are some different expressions both formal and informal that you can use instead of using i agree i agree i agree i agree gets a little bit boring so you've got lots of different expressions either formally or informally that you can use in different situations so let me run through them again absolutely agreed that's right exactly i hear you i'll second that or i'll give you that that makes two of same here this is it or that's it you said it you're telling me and then finally you took the words right out of my mouth okay so that's the the list of those expressions so remember to subscribe to my channel and as always join me again soon
