[Music] hey you welcome back to a thing called [Music] Art we are exploring the iconic Johannesburg Art Gallery today a gy based in the city this is set in a 107y old building with over 10,000 art pieces on display the gallery is divided into different sections displaying various pieces of art the architecture is a Marvel I mean the archive is full of amazing pieces some by Picasso Monae and many other iconic local and international artists the gallery features work from the past three Centuries with some artwork daating back all the way to the 1600s it's well wor anyone's [Music] time starting off in the Philips gallery we are created by local artist dad daa's exhibition titled Cape [Music] [Music] Town [Music] interestingly enough kanesa was raised in an apartment not far from the Johannesburg Art Gallery growing up their aunt was romantically involved with someone employed at the gallery and so would bring them along on visits the building inspired D kanesa and so for them to have the Johannesburg Art Gallery as their chosen venue for the exhibition is a full circle [Music] moment [Music] oh [Music] this [Music] [Music] I [Music] this [Music] [Music] we headed over to my favorite section of the gallery where we got to see iconic local artists including Cil scotus John muang Mary sabanda and this one by Helen CTI one of my favorite South African [Music] artists [Music] n [Music] really random but I must say I love the smell of this room it smells like an old library drop a comment below if you know what smell I'm [Music] describing [Music] so The Story Goes that null Erasmus the director of the Johannesburg Art Gallery discovered a captivating artwork titled t d cure 2 purchasing it for around 27,000 Rand back in 1973 of course using Johannesburg Art Gallery funds it was a vibrant portrayal of a man's face expressing fear and angry it was crafted by the renowned Pablo Picasso Erasmus interpreted it as a manifestation of the artist's existential angst in the face of impending death but the South African press had a field day Erasmus received intense [Music] backlash fast forward to today where the art piece is worth millions it has unfortunately been out of the country on loan since 2015 but it's epic to know that the iconic Johannesburg Art Gallery owns such an incredible piece from Pablo Picasso himself [Music] I hope you enjoyed walking through this marvelous venue with me today until next [Music] time
