it's official kyle busch will drive for richard childress racing next season heck his seven-year-old son brexton got a contract offer from richard childress today let's see how many more questions we can answer [Music] [Applause] how's it going y'all my name is eric welcome to out of the groove this episode may be darn well near feature length this morning at the nascar hall of fame in charlotte north carolina kyle busch and richard childress made their new relationship official we'll react to all the highlights from today's all-time historic press conference hopefully we'll answer some of the many many questions that still remain regarding kyle busch kbm and many other drivers futures and we'll also discuss how we got to this point and where joe gibbs racing where kyle bush were rcr where they go from here so let's get started first off yes as was reported this past weekend kyle bush will drive for richard childress racing it was confirmed today that he will drive the number eight car i love how in this promotional video kyle busch posted he's standing next to the black number eight i'm getting a little ahead of myself but richard childress during their press conference today directly compared kyle busch to the late great dale earnhardt i looked at him in his eye and i seen that look in dale earnhardt senior's eye that he's hungry we're going to win i'd seen that look before he said that kind of stuff on more than one occasion just interesting anytime you compare someone especially as polarizing as kyle bush to the intimidator that's gonna get people talking that's gonna perk some ears up anyway let's get back to the beginning kyle bush showed up to the nascar hall of fame today wearing both of his nascar cup series championship rings he delivered an opening statement thanking toyota eminem's his family joe gibbs you name it very classy very professional thanking everyone who's helped him build a tremendous career up to this point but then he got down to the nitty-gritty i'm excited to announce that i'll be taking my talents to welcome north carolina to drive the number eight car for richard childress racing starting in 2023 i'd like to introduce you to my new boss richard childress there it is the moment kyle busch confirms his move to the eight car which you know their shop rcr is located welcome north carolina i always thought that was an interesting town name i've been to the rcr shop once i visited the rcr museum last year for the first time was really cool but it is kind of it's more remote for sure than most of the other charlotte based race teams anyway fun little lebron james the decision reference right there then richard childress took the stage and uh called back to an infamous moment between kyle bush and richard childress over 11 years ago kyle the other week when we signed our contract there was something i forgot to give you was your signing bonus i got to give you your signing bonus will you hold my watch absolutely how's that all right that's all we're going to talk about that that's history that's all anybody's talking about yeah we had to see a hold my watch uh reference in this press conference pretty well done then richard childress did something interesting he invited kyle bush's wife samantha and his son brexton seven years old been racing in his own right in recent years he invited them up to the stage and offered brexton a contract with an rcr option here's what that looked like so here is a contract for an option to drive for rcr in the future how about that thank you buddy seven years old and he's already got an offer to drive for richard childress racing that that has to be a nascar record right to make it official like that obviously guys like austin dillon someone like ty gibbs you knew they'd have a place as long as they showed any more so of talent but still haven't like in writing i don't know if that's official i had no lawyer but i thought that was kind of cool kind of interesting kyle bush has talked about in recent months how important it is to keep his truck serious team around how he would love to share a truck with brexton one day once brexton turns 16 and then see brexton race full-time once he turns 18. so the family the legacy the father-son component has been important to kyle busch throughout this negotiating process so i think that was a cool gesture by richard childress there to sort of spotlight that a little bit anyway let's get a few details out of the way they didn't have anything to announce as far as sponsors today richard childress did say that there should be some announcements coming very soon there have been some reports that existing rcr sponsors have already committed to kyle bush others are taking a a wait and see approach that was reported by adam stern yesterday bush will be in the eight car with randall burnett as his crew chief burnett has been tyler reddick's crew chief this season on the eight so they're really just plugging kyle busch into the current tyler reddick race team so what happens to tyler reddick here's what richard childress had to say on that front tyler ready i met with him about an hour ago and i explained to him that he wasn't going to drive the eight car next year we've got a contract for him to drive for rcr next year and i wanted to talk to him before this official announcement i know there's been a lot of word and rumor out there but i met with him about an hour ago do you think childress really waited until today to tell tyler reddick he won't be in the eighth car next year because if he did i kind of respected it there's a level of pettiness there no doubt about it but we know childress was kind of mad that reddick announced the 2311 thing without telling him and and so maybe this is him his way of kind of getting back in a very subtle lower key way hey we're not going to tell you we've given your car to somebody else until the day of we know childress is still not happy about reddick's decision to leave for toyota after next season but he plans on keeping reddick in a full-time car for 2023 just not the three and just not the eight here's what children said about perhaps securing a third charter yes we will have three charters tyler redick will drive for that other charter team yes hmm they could run a third car without a charter they just wouldn't get as much of the purse money like they'd get a lot less of course they wouldn't be guaranteed into every race which considering car counts there's probably only a few races a year that would actually be a concern but no question about it they'd like to have a charter will they buy a charter will they lease a charter which is something you can do basically rent it for a year a year at a time my guess is they'd go with that option because i don't see richard childress racing you know planning on being a three-car team long-term they're contractually obligated to have reddick race full-time for another year so they'll probably try to lease a charter my guess is from a team like spire who's a chevy team they have two charters that's 77 this year been a rotating cast of drivers they could perhaps lease that charter from that team there's others out there perhaps rick rare racing i doubt live fast is going to let go of their charter even for a year richard childress would not say where they're getting that charter from he had no comments when asked about you know the status of those negotiations but sounds like the plan is to have three full-time chartered teams in the cup series next year austin dylan and the three kyle busch in the eight and reddick in the who knows what many are going to ask why wouldn't rcr just put kyle bush in the different number and let tyler reddit keep the eight and to me this is an easy question to answer richard childress racing for branding purposes for marketing purposes they want to be the three and the eight kyle bush confirmed today this is a long-term multi-year contract agreement tylerettics only under contract for one more season richard childress said it during the press conference today they want to focus on building up a team that will be great over the long haul they're not interested in just you know this gap year with a guy who's leaving in a year anyways so bump reddick out of that seat and put kyle busch in the car that he is going to make famous over the next several years at least to start that as soon as you possibly can start building that brand that reputation put the driver who's committed to your team long term in one of your flagship cars redick's not committed rcr he's going to toyota's first chance he gets doesn't make sense to keep him in one of your two most important flagship cars so so now i totally get it's awkward it's unpleasant it's uncomfortable reddick fans are gonna have to buy like 33 merch or some other number for a year but i think it makes a ton of sense from a business perspective and i think that's all the most important details kbm kbm didn't have anything to report on the kbm front kyle bush said that they're still working through things with chevy with general motors to bring kbm to the chevy side of things and run next year but right now nothing is done the intention is that kbm will race in trucks next season still be a multi-car multi-truck team but no updates there so yeah still some questions still some unanswered questions no doubt this truly is the end of an era i don't want to blow past this kyle bush spent 15 years at joe gibbs racing he's won two championships and counting he's still in the running for a third championship this season he won 56 races driving the 18 car he's been to the championship four five times he's the winningest driver in joe gibbs racing history this is a tremendous loss for that team but let's take a moment let's let's take a moment of silence to remember the kyle busch era at joe gibbs racing at an era we will not soon forget [Music] okay that's enough i've seen many on social media today criticizing joe gibbs racing how could you lose kyle busch how could you let him walk away how could you fumble the bag this dramatically and i don't know if i agree it sounds like it was kind of jjr's plan for most of the past few months to let kyle busch go they're bought into ty gibbs much cheaper up and coming clearly has raw talent lots of potential i think for sure once the summer rolled around i think gibbs gave up on kyle bush and was already committed to ty gibbs kyle bush admitted as much he backed up a reporter's story that gibbs didn't want to pay the two-time champion they'd rather go with someone cheaper he said that is a fair assessment in his eyes and he was also asked specifically if at any point he was told the 18 car is no longer an option and kyle bush said yes so at some point over the past few months presumably joe gibbs racing went to kyle bush and said hey i'm sorry but we're rescinding whatever offer we may have made you the 18 car is off the table we do not want you in that car next season again i'm sure that happened fairly recently joe gibbs racing early in the year was working hard on landing a major sponsor for kyle busch to keep him in the 18 but once that became difficult and once ty gibbs started winning more xfinity races and started to fill in admirably for kurt busch that's when i believe jjr went to kyle bush and said hey sorry the 18's off the table we're not going to meet your salary and we have a cheaper up-and-coming prospect waiting in the wings time will tell if joe gibbs racing made the right call and time will tell if this is even a loss for joe gibbs racing quite honestly look kyle busch is an all-time great he is a generational talent he is knocking on the door of the nascar mount rushmore he's not even 40 years old yet but in the nearly three years now since he won his last championship he only has four cup series wins he hasn't been at the championship for he's on the verge of being knocked out in the first round this year he has not looked like his typical dominant kyle bush self he's looked nowhere close to that the last three years and you can blame a number of factors blame kovid reducing the amount of practice and qualifying blame real changes preventing him starting as many exfanier truck races during the year blame the new next-gen car blame the crew chief swap a couple years ago adam stevens out then bayshore in blame the contract distractions this year you can blame a lot of things i'm not saying he doesn't have at least some fair excuses but the stat sheet doesn't lie kyle bush has regressed statistically the past three seasons when history tells us he's in his mid-30s these should be the best years of his career that's concerning to me look if i can get kyle busch at a discount which maybe richard childress kind of was able to we don't know that for sure we probably never will but if i can get kyle bush a discount absolutely every team would be lining up to make room for him but if kyle bush is gonna ask for full price like he was getting paid when eminem's paying 20 million a year i'm not sure he's worth it not to joe gibbs racing at least a team that has denny hamlin that has martin truex jr there's veterans providing excellent information during meetings on race day on race weekends like kyle busch is great but he's not as valuable to a team that has a couple superstars already and a couple great rising drivers like christopher bell so i'm not going to join the chorus on social media that's saying joe gibbs racing made a horrible mistake this is an all-time l i'm not sure i believe it just yet he's kyle bush i'm not going to doubt kyle bush but the stats the last three years that's a big sample size do not lie he's not good enough to be the highest paid driver in nascar right now he's just not i don't believe it he will make richard childress racing a lot better real quick i want to look at kind of a brief simplified timeline i threw together how did we get to this point because six eight months ago everyone assumed kyle bush was going to stay with jjr he was supposed to be a toyota lifer never leave the manufacturer never leave joe gibbs and then over the course of this summer things have changed quite a bit and now he's driving a chevy for richard childress how did we get here it goes all the way back not to this past summer or spring but all the way back to the summer of 2021 when eminem's the parent company mars informed joe gibbs racing that they would not re-up with the team after 2022. now that left approximately a 20 million gap in jgr and kyle bush's budget that was over a year ago summer of 2021. okay let's move things forward into this calendar year let's move to the spring of 2022. april was the first time kyle busch's contract issues went public remember cowbush at talladega said ask joe gibbs voice some frustrations with how this whole deal's been playing out now around this same time it's believed based on an nbc report from earlier this summer around this same time it's believed that jgr was close to signing oracle a major tech company to a major sponsorship deal but the deal fell through we also learned in a recent report from the athletics jordan bianchi that around the same time presumably bush was made an offer that would have kept him as one of the most highly compensated drivers in the garage but this offer was not tied to any sponsorship and was rejected by kyle busch because bush bleeded he'd either get a better deal from gibbs once they got a better sponsor or another team would come along and pay him more so that all happened kind of in the spring bush starts to voice frustrations oracle deal falls through and then perhaps kyle busch rejected an agreement from gibbs that maybe looking back might have been a better deal than what he's got with rcr we don't know that that's just speculation that part is now let's move to the summer in july kyle busch publicly admitted that he'd be willing to make concessions to stay with joe gibbs racing he told reporters that he would be willing to race for under his market value a moment of self-awareness maybe a moment of desperation gosh midway through the year and still don't have a deal done for next season maybe i gotta lower my asking price you know reality sucks sometimes at this point bush also admitted that he was talking to other teams shr got thrown around colin got thrown around the athletic just reported that petty gms was in the conversation and then later in july kurt busch got hurt at pocono and 2311 became a possible option for next year by the end of this summer in august kyle busch suggested a major change was coming he said quote you want to be able to go somewhere that you feel like you have a legit shot to race to win trust me i don't feel like it's fair to me or my family or anything else if we're going to have to spend less time together moving forward because we are going to have to change our lifestyle no question there's a big change coming that was just a couple weeks ago in august and now move to the present kyle bush here in september announces he is joining richard childress racing so there you go there's a big kind of bird's eye view of some of the big bullet points the key timeline of this kyle bush news and announcement it's it's been a journey especially over the past few months this summer the biggest question has been where is kyle bush going and when will he announce it at the beginning of this year heck even at the beginning of this summer i wouldn't have believed richard childress racing was a possibility but i do have to applaud richard childress for taking such a big swing i joked about this in a recent video but if he'd wanted to he could have just kept austin dylan on the three he could have signed his other grandson ty dillon to the eight maybe for once tyler reddick's contract was up and boom he could keep the family intact austin dillon would be a fringe playoff contender every year ty dillon would probably run 20th or 25th but at least it's it's a family affair and richard childress heavily values that when tyler redick announced he was leaving for toyota earlier this summer that was a huge gut punch it clearly came as at least somewhat of a surprise a shock to richard childress and richard childress racing but rather than tuck their tail down between their legs and go down without a fight they came out swinging and nabbed at toyota's all-time greatest driver i never would have expected that from rcr they've shown great speed this year the next gen cars likely helped a kind of a b-tier team like them elevate a little but rcr is a team that's become more known for losing big free agents in recent years not attracting them kevin harvick left almost a decade ago now tyler redick's leaving we're not used to great drivers going to rcr in the present day that just doesn't happen but kudos to rcr richard childress being aggressive getting kyle busch winning the sweepstakes they deserve a lot of credit they're going to be more competitive next year especially with bush and reddick under contract for a season like that that could be dangerous now my final thoughts on kyle bush i've made it clear since the beginning of this journey that i'm paying the closest attention to kyle bush the driver kyle bush is great for the sport to many he is the villain that you love to root against to many others he is the anti-hero or just the hero that they love to support the misunderstood hero perhaps he's great he is fantastic so as a fan i want to see him in a seat in a car that gives him the chance to run up front and win races every single week joe gibbs racing would have been the best option for this no doubt about the 18 car is one of the best cars in the garage joe gibbs racing has some of the best human and technical resources anywhere but richard childress racing is not far off with this next gen car being a spec car gibbs rcr getting the exact same parts and pieces the human element in my opinion is more important than ever especially who you have working on your car on sunday and randall burnett i think is really good we've seen what he and tyler reddick have been capable of this season rcr has been kinda yeah for a while now sure but the last couple years thanks in part to tyler reddick they look like an ascending team once again say what you will but both of their cars are in the playoffs right now if i'm kyle busch joe gibbs racing was plan a all along but once sponsorship talks fell apart once the team clearly indicated they wanted to go the tie gibbs direction rcr is not a bad backup i fully expect bush to make the playoffs every year he drives the eight there could be some growing pains at first no doubt about it i'm not sure i'll pick him as like a front front-runner to make the championship four or anything but it's not out of the question heck i picked tyler reddick a few weeks ago to win this year's championship if i think reddick can win a title in the eight you're damn right i believe kyle bush can win a championship in that same car so i'm a believer in rcr right now i really am i think the next gen is it was built for teams like richard childress racing like petty gms like calling those bc plus tier teams trying to catch up to the big guns track house another great example this car was built for a team like richard childress racing so it's going to be an awkward transition period for sure but i have very high hopes i think kyle busch as richard childress said has is hungry he's out to prove everyone that he can still get it done he can get it done in a different car i think kyle busch is going to be a threat for years to come i don't think this is this is like a brad keselowski situation which i still think kezlowski could have some sort of resurgence in the next few years but like kazlowski dropped off the face of the earth this year going to rfk that's not what's going to happen to kyle bush not a chance i think it's a decent plan b it is plan b don't get me wrong rcr is never the favorite but it's not a bad backup by any means so i'm still confident in kyle busch's ability let me know what you think down in the comment section below i know this was a long video but boy it's been basically a whole summer coming thanks for watching y'all if you're new
