>> Good to see you again it is
so good to see you this hour, yeah, great got to come to a
House again we made a visual and out of the backyard, varied
as youre working on the backyard. Its hard to believe
it was like 5 years ago. Yeah, that was 16 and people
dont know how old how time flies when you get old. Im
9500 the last thing I remember was 80. Yeah, so so we were here in
Washington D C. And it is its the Kennedy
Center honors. >> The 80 year career. 5 Emmys a Tony Grammy, a bafta
the sag lifetime achievement award television Hall of Fame
star in the in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. So what what is
the Kennedy Center honors not having no, I did you met left
out what I didnt get I didnt get an Oscar. Well that is
there still time. But they gave stand wall an
honoree one. He had it on his own, but thats what I want
most and lobster and you your you do a pretty good stand
world look for you, I was his favorite he wanted me to play
him. So so it what the Kennedy
Center honors that mean that the for for people in their
profession that thats one of the highest honors. I know that
is a very small something over 200. I have ever received you know what they dont
remember the first one. 4 years ago. We do have a hotel or home, I
was the emcee where you really and the candidate. Oh yeah. I must have made a real
impression. So youve gone through a full
circle from hosting the horse yeah, getting the best right.
Yeah, what is it especially in this time of covid is this kind of one of those
things where you youre stepping out and I would assume
is the first like big award so I feel like a little kid
getting out of the House and getting a president on. Yeah,
we have been anywhere near here you have you traveled, Ive
traveled a little but it would attract a lot earlier was going
to get a nice. But that its an amazing honor that that it and
look even though something was it.
Well, this was a great capture, your career youre not ready to
stop working together. After retired by just doing it for
nothing. You do charity work after they
want. No I. >> I dont think Ill ever
retire unless they make me it was too much for yeah thats a
good life. The major. You know I the other awards
are. Well, you know like icing on
the cake, but this one really its this is where you get your
credentials, you really I mean its such a
small group of people, Im sure will be in that group. >> I mean its an amazing group
youve got Debbie Allen Garth Brooks, dory yourself at home I
forgetting theres one other. I knew you would Joan Baez have
you got for you guys going to get to get him and everybody
are you. >> What was supposed to go to
dinner tonight. Everybodys going to be Ive known gabby
for years, I just love her, especially one dancer to
another. Im not really you know she called me one day she
was I had this little kids would you come and help me with
him, I said then we cant really bad Santa Fe. Im not
talking about the fee. Im talking about up here theyre
all looking at their feet. I knew I had to teach him a
look at the, you have been such a part of our lives, I
mean from the Van Dyck show movies television youve done
Mary Poppins twice twice. Twice when you look at your your body
of work. Do you realize how much you are a part of our
lives. Yes, the funniest thing because of covid theres no school Ive got a
whole fan Club of 6 year old now. The write me letters, theyre
just discovering. The you know Mary Poppins and
the band actually its just a pleasure and theyre like it is
held up over the years. >> You know theres this show
1, 1, of the streaming channels go wandavision and it look it
its a eyes too. Difference it comes through through the when
theyre yeah and you know the Van Dyck said there was one
that was a perfect oh my to to the Van Dyck show thats right.
It was the same. >> Living room set but the guy
had a metal head years, yeah. I was that was some kind of a
reference. >> But the idea when you look
at this show. I mean it was done what 60 years ago. You watch the Van Dyck it still
holds up. >> It does is still long and I
still got a lot of mail on Carl Reiner was so smart he said I
dont want to ever mention anything news of the day. He didnt. What writers talk about showed
us the data showing that way and I think the clothes are
back in style with you mention Carolina, we just
lost him. Yeah, idol but what did that mean we wouldnt come
right to me he was everything to me was the Godfather. Everything he was one of the
brightest. Isis human beings, they are due at
the most talented he knew more about comedy that you know,
Sheldon Leonard he was like you to produce drawn out, but Karl
and and he had different ideas about the comedy way as so I
learned a lot just listening to the to the net argue about
comedy. The college that I dont care
how crazy it gets if its possible that could happen.
If we want to do something and say we do a dream sequence. >> Yeah, I I watch it was
watching some. Its the other night of the Van Dyck show. And what I forgot was how physical some of the
company was on that show I mean yeah we all know about you
falling over those out of it and through that and they want. >> No please dont do that. >> It was that way because
Colin, I love to do visual comedy. So whenever he got
right, did you give me a place to do it. >> I want 100 so the drunk
uncle lors drunk uncle were here. Yeah, I mean your your ID
and the other warrior, its the definition of comedy. Endure,
you cut yourself, youre banging your head on the on the
desk. Im hoping that only took one to be. Pretty danger. >> You know what my favorite
is. What is it that eyes. At what
the voter injured rock. Everybody goes off youre sober
and you go back and forth that you get all tangled up as well
I had more fun on that show. >> What if there are so many
people who say you influence their
comedy and whether its Jim Carrey or Tina Fey folks like
that. I feel you know you you just you have a really
influenced several generations. >> Of of we have that kind of
comedy but Jim were good friends of course he said had
been they wouldnt be made. Stand while the Russian tea. I would do both I did the
eulogy at both of their funerals wow. Stan roll and butter and I still remember liberal.
Im just carrying on the tradition, so you talk about
the, you know when youre hypnotized what. >> When you look back at some
of your performance is what are some of the ones that stand out
for you. >> I think the the 5 years
other than the actual with Kyle America was the most fun I ever
had it was just we all look forward to coming to it because
how did the right things and stone everybody got to throw in
their ideas. So from the first reading to what we did on the
show it was a different show altogether that was the most
fun and I think Im most proud of Mary Poppins yeah, yeah. >> What was that like doing
that because that the movie there was a lot of question
marks about it is some people said all the conduct Lee
English guy, but but it has stood the test of time what is
it about Barry I. >> We knew every morning coming
to work that something wonderful is that everybody
just felt their song everything about it
just that dances we all came to work in the morning at what was
on the set every day he was going at it. I I got a bafta award and it
was some question about my So it wasnt cockney a little
shy on the very north of England that had been shattered
by people from Ohio. >> Again that they bought it.
Given you were born in Ohio. Movie you know it a lot of
people didnt know that you youre played the 2 roles roles
of course well guide you revert to the old guy banker at
the end and last time I saw you with the rumors about Mary
Poppins and that it always are but that you were going to be
in it and in fact I was you are what you said. Well the good
news is that I have to wear makeup to play the >> will you invest your top
words weighed in that you can do it now without it becoming
well. The funny thing about that part
I want a wall and said could I please at Old man and hes made
me do a screen test. And I was there out for the
banks House, I think what got my been protective over in the
Bush. >> Threw him away. >> I didnt get paid I had to
give $2000 to his art school I had to pay wow it was a traitor
there. But he was shot. You know, weve all been cooped
up in our homes during the during the pandemic what what
what what have you done to pass the time beside grow to spent
girl here. >> I dont I have we stayed
home a lot. I am A and major television animator I
have all the equipment I spent hours at. So thats fun trying
to keep up with the technology from one. The time fries. >> Youre doing animation.
No one home and I have a court that yeah about tell me about
the van thanks. My wife. Eileen now sings in front of us we backed her
up, but she seems great. In fact you are get ready, you
guys youre all set to be you had a series of performances
and then the pademic pandemic shut everything down thats
right. And we also say that the Florida Theater for obama but
for the first time I better sure theres you know almost 70
years that day I was a wreck. That was the president out
there. And my tie was cricket and I
have a picture obama came up on the stage afterward and
straighten got to pick. fantastic. Oh yeah, yeah, I cant wait
weve been missing saying we have been able to get together the only and I say all day but
weve got what weve got our shot him and it was a lot of
elderly people waiting in line. So we came out and checked
justice to Bulls. Everybody I think saw that its probably
the one song that everybody knows there but what how old
you are or how young you are everybody knows just. We were
in the market the other day and a little girl that makes that
debt than die. But back now that might depend.
So look at snack food have some What what keeps you going deck.
I mean you know this is it here we are you know, weve been
were just coming out of this pandemic and yet you know, I
mean I saw the article in The Washington Post. So my guys,
Van Dyck is hes 95 and getting the a getting a the Kennedy
Center honors and he still wants to work. >> Oh, yeah, I dont know what
I do thats the thing with being an
entertainer you do it because you love to do it. Not for the
money is it. A lords but we were saying all
the time and weve got a full backyard to work out, I work
out every day. Showed up so the whole thing
wow. >> Getting hard and they are
now. Whats the whats the secret. >> To to get into 95. Good
genes. I guess Ive always tried to eat right and
everything my mother made almost a 96 that she was sitting on the
patio an afternoon with my brother and some and should not
go to the members of the German said who are these people. She or I have trouble with short term memory yes, getting
battered at the same time I longer members coming back and
the color wow I remember you every day whats your favorite
memory. My favorite memory. Well, Ive got a lot of a lot
of them. I was telling some of the day. My father coffers bill Indiana
across the street from Wabash college. Russo also wrote a great book. I was on the freshman track
team. And I would go across a
Saturday launch the the Wabash team run against other colleges
well-coached was a a official it came to me you said the guy
on the 4 by 4 just a Kurdish but you want to run it was 15
years old. I write in my stocking feet past the guy on the outside and
beat up, I beat Purdue. At 15 years like they give me a
little red my father never believe me I thought I had ever
the Olympic. And it actually went in to get
my permit the doctor should. Youve got a little heart over
the I dont watch it. So I joined a dramatic club. Everything worked out for him. >> I would say what I mean its
still a ways away but what would you like your legacy to
be what your what what what what do you want your legacy to
be. >> I dont know if I could be
in the same class as well Id be very happy, you know
somebody who contributed to that kind of entertainment. >> I love that well, but I
think you you are in that class. I mean youre whenever I said to a number of
people going to go talk to Van Dyck and I mean everybody from
you know teenagers to folks that are my age theyre all the
light up its going to feel great better outlook old does
it ever. Does it have. A woman stopped me and said youre the one whos got to
bring this country together. I said OK. I got something to do now. She said you got to bring this
country together and youre the guy that can do it. What I think youre gonna get
elected first to you want to River. So youve done. >> Broadway youve done
television youve done movies. Whats left what would you
still like to do Shakespeare, Im not good really like to do
going on here, Im the right age. Tomorrow to about Oprah Laura
creeps in this Petty Brady from David, I know it. I can do it. I that that blows me away as
you would really like to try it. How how would you I mean how do
average finish or sure. This is 7 years ago by manage
of up. Senators had a call from Sofia
Rams Asian she wants to do a ship
com with you and I share but do we start of books that I turned
it down because of the money Ill pay them. And should get top billing. And I
said I dont care but never mentioned by name just let me
work which it all fell through, Im still mad at him. What would you do another
sitcom today. Now without power. I dont think theres anybody
in the business who can write like he said and he. Well he got our speech patterns
right away. We had to do was save lives.
He wrote the way I spoke in the way marriage bill, you called
hurricane says it would just duck sure could. >> You know it its not to be a
little maudlin but with Karl gonna mean youre youre the
last person left in. You think about I mean do you think about
that little or no. >> No one really dont know
because you had Im not afraid of death afraid of the dying. >> When you are getting your
Kennedy Center award the actual at the actual ceremony. >> What do you think thats
going to feel like it really is its its the
topics like getting knighted as far as Im concerned its
the very top of everything usually they have friends and
compatriots come up. I have no one lived there all bad, so Im
going to ship. Not hoping as somebody from Mahdi Python and
Steve Martin, maybe funny people. What more can I say
