[Music] you're the coach of the Super Bowl champion Bears and the 1986 things couldn't be better as your team rolls to six and oh but you don't think so and bring in Doug Flutie some say that disrupt your team which promptly goes out and gets beaten we just got a couple bad breaks that's what you want to hear you're talking to the wrong person you're dealing in fiction I don't deal in fiction I deal in reality the reality is that Darrell Rodgers and the Detroit Lions could hand you a second straight loss behind the high-powered running of the James Gang fullback James Jones halfback Gary James and the defense that's taken a page out of your book they're a lot like us put a lot of beer now and now you play a lot of bear you create a lot of problems for people we're in Chicago on a threatening autumn day that will match the mood of the Bears and coach Mike Ditka as they welcome the Detroit Lions to sold-out Soldier Field [Music] welcome we are live from jam-packed and raucous Soldier Field where the Bears will host the Detroit Lions a lot of interest in this one around the NFL today teams wondering did the Minnesota Vikings aroused the Bears or did they expose some chinks in the honor hello everybody I am Wayne Walker working today with Johnny Morris a former Chicago baron and Johnny you knew more about this team and anybody in the business how will they respond to that loss wearing their a championship team when they were thoroughly embarrassed last week and I think despite all the distractions they're gonna come back with a vengeance today and one reason is that Jim McMahon is back in the lineup as you know he's been hurt there's been some controversy about McMahon but the Bears nevertheless have the last 21 starts that he has had the Chicago Bears have won so when McMahon's in there the Bears are a much better football team what about the Lions when they have been successful this year it's been moving the ball and small chunks and controlling the ball now if they do that they might be playing right into the Bears hands today that's right the Bears don't give a little bit they try and come in and make a big play on you so will Detroit change the offensive strategy if they do they would probably go to the wide receivers Jeff Chadwick and Eric Hipple could have a big day because the Lions are gonna have to open up a little bit I think if they're gonna have a chance to beat the Chicago Bears Chadwick as you know averages 17.5 yards per catch so he may be a vital factor but I am expecting a hard-hitting football game it should be a good one it should be a good and is been raining off and on for two days here in the Chicago area right now no rain the field is dry except for a spot near midfield temperature is 57 degrees but the forecast is expected rain the Bears will kick-off to the Lions Chicago has won 21 straight games with Jim McMahon starting at quarterback they have won 13 straight here at Soldier Field [Applause] Kevin Butler will kick-off for the Bears put things in motion force Oscar Smith and Herman hunter are deep for Detroit Smith the rookie just added to the roster yesterday a low spinning kick directed towards hunter that bounces up to five he kicks [Applause] or he reaches the 20-yard 18 or the 19 Eric Hipple starts Aeneid quarterback for the Lions and the defense he'll be looking at up front for the Chicago Bears foursome of dan Hampton Steve McMichael William Perry and Richard dent perhaps the best in the business that linebacker will keep an eye on Mike Singletary today well I can see out there that Ron Rivera is starting Mike Singletary spooled brine apparently they made a last-minute decision Singletary will not play and the veteran veteran backfield group of the Bears pimple to throw on first down on play action for robic the tight end in and out of his hands at the 40 incomplete offensively for Detroit along with Hipple the rookie running back Gary James James Jones Chadwick planned and Rubik are the receivers and we might see Jimmy Giles who they just picked up this week upfront Lomas brown Harvey Salem Mott Dorney and stringer and the big thing to us there is Lomas brown he'll be why I'm blocking on Richard dent that should be a classic pattern a big matchup second and 10 now for the Lions and ball is on the 19 yard line very first possession [Applause] [Music] in trouble scrambles left and releases complete the Chadwick and regi phillips the cornerback defensively well it looks like the Lions are going to open up that's two for two on the passing department so they've decided to try and attack the Bears via the passing game on the outside actually rubicon that first play was uh was open had the pass been better they would had a big game so now this is where the Bears like to have teams on third and long situation and this is where Darrell Rodgers does not want his team third long against the Chicago Bears [Applause] [Music] [Applause] refrigerator William Perry was the man was all over hippo rushed him so that he couldn't make the pass very accurately 72 coming right up the middle over there Steve Mott and comes through and puts the rush on hippo and he has to force to pass in a hurry and so the Lions will be forced to punt Murray has been bothered by the kneecap injury has lost some of his quickness and that's why he has been playing much on offense for the Bears Lew Barnes is deep for Chicago Mike black will kick it for Detroit Barnes at about his 40-yard line and the refrigerator also got by Harvey Salem on that [Music] a short wobbly kick [Applause] goes out of bounds near the 45 yard line [Applause] good field position a 37-yard punt by black no return so the Bears take over about their own 45 yard line for their first possession Jim McMahon comes down and again today making a statement that will get to the defense that he'll be looking at for Detroit up front a three for Keith Ferguson Eric Williams and William gay pine backing unit of Williams Harold Maxwell and Coker and Michael Cooper has really come on for Detroit Galloway and cornerback is a story there Johnny yes the Mighty Mouse they call him he's playing on the cornea with five foot seven he's a tough [Applause] Dayton and sewer the remaining backs behind McMahon go an ocean in back this is pate and you'll get a couple out there with McMann offensively so we mentioned Payton and soui in the backfield golf or to go in Morehead the receivers up front some injury problems Jimbo covert has a hyper-extended elbow he is a quest questionable for the game or see how long that he can go so one big factor in this game already it appears that Mike Singletary is not going to play and that does hurt the defense as Mike Ditka looks on his team he feels this is a critical game for him after coming off that loss to Minnesota got a drink things around he says second and eight [Music] constipate and there's a whistles before the play they took too much time as Jim McMahon couldn't get to playoff on time and Jim McMahon in in another of one of his little gestures for Mike Ditka and the rest of the fans around Chicago and the country's wearing high-top I'm yard thinkin down he's wearing black high-top shoes and he's wearing an armband which says number 82 on it in honor of Kenny Marge or who was cut by the Bears this week who was a very close friend of his so you can see the 82 on his armband and the high top black shoes like Kenny marjoram used to wear so Jim McMahon has his say once again doesn't his statement of course he has one awakens Andy Williams out there too physically for Detroit holding Peyton to a small game okay let's take a look at number 74 Jimbo covert that's a William Gay who goes inside then tries to come outside and does not get that much penetration as the short pass or to the sidelines so that was not what we could tell a real good test on Jimbo covert this Detroit defense has really improved the last couple of weeks they held the Rams to 200 yards total offense and that's not too bad when you consider they've got dickerson Detroit is an improved football team [Applause] [Music] 946 and on a roll step on the defender John Boston lelou bars has had that kind of problems before in this season as you know hasn't played all that much as McMahon throws on the role rolling to his left and who put that ball right on the dime to Lou Barnes right there right between the elbows on the numbers that should have been caught Bostick got a break on that and so did the Lions who get the ball back Corey Buford well kick it away the left side manly is back over go out of bounds inside the 20 a 27 yard kick when the Lions will have control of the ball when we return bears that believe that some of those distractions pause that rare loss last week there was too many distractions last week I made atmosphere wasn't right and his show cuz we definitely got our butts handed to us as Minnesota's ready this week is a different attitude I mean it seemed like everybody's working hard and it's back to the way it was before so now we just got to see them how you know see what we get once the game is over and I believe you're huh hey for Detroit to be there in this situation are they gonna be the ones get a bread kicker Johnny it's important for a team coming off a loss and find a team like Detroit that they should be first ten minutes are very important Otis Wilson always has been a player that says what he thinks we'll see if it turns out to be true first now for the Lions Gary James the rookie takes the handoff from Hipple and gets three or four the Lions slow starting team this 1986 season they have not scored a touchdown in the first quarter all season long the only team the National Football League with that mark not the one they want James picked up five second five now from the 29 yard line bears just jumped into their 46 their bear defense [Music] thing we have ferry slides over for the hip we've talked about how the Lions like to control the ball and when they do and they run well they went 206 yards as opposed to 87 yards they've gone to the ground twice and now they have a third and five situation it was interesting to see how they came out for now they're in the third and five situation Eric Hipple has been excellent the past few games equal to 31 passes last week official Rams opposed to the short variety third and five [Applause] / Marshall we'll burn Marshall on the Blitz and Hipple is still down a turkey got to the inside there found the gap nobody blocked him and Hipple didn't see him coming the ball was jolted loose makes the tackle picks it up goes in for the touchdown it was all Wilbur Marshall on that play as Eric Hipple is still down on the turf it looks like he is really I think maybe knocked out Marshall got with linebackers love Johnny and no touch coming up through a gap no one picked him up and he hit hippo full-speed and he has such great acceleration and impact when he hits people and hip he'll never had a chance on the play these are the nightmares of a quarterback you can see he's looking off here on this side for the receiver he got through so quickly as there was a mess up in the offensive scheme there of the Lions pass blocking and Marshall made the tackle and picked up the ball that's what you call a double dip to get 150 points for that one he did it all national yes and hippos still a little bit dazed and Joe Ferguson getting ready to come in and he is a quarterback who took a shot from Wilbur Marshall last year at the end of the season Wilbur Marshall decked Joe Ferguson on one of the more ferocious hits I've ever seen so he may have to come into the game and of course the Lions what has happened to the Lions now they're behind the Bears this is what the Bears did a lot last year not as much this year and he get teams down and then the defense becomes extra tough as well where Marshall gives us to the wave and he more than anybody else kind of misses Mike Singletary in there but he said hey we a lot of great Flair's and he says Mike Singletary is we're not going to be lost without him he says we're gonna make up for it and now we're gonna do well he was kind of defending the rest of the defense because everybody in the media has said that Singletary is the heart of the defense which he is in many respects but they got a lot of hearts out there well we're sewing has heart I have a hunch he'll be back in the game Ramar so we've got more than one leader on defense that's right there are a lot of us other with the extra point draw [Music] [Applause] 10:44 remaining here in the first quarter Soldier Field the Bears lead seven nothing we are seven to nothing here as a result of Wilbur Marshalls 12 yard touchdown run after a fumble recovery that he caused elsewhere around a league you'll see some of the scores and games going on right now San Francisco green vein northa here in the first quarter Pittsburgh and Cincinnati all early games early scores very suddenly now the Bears have jumped out in front of the Lions and it's a situation that they wanted to be in Johnny yes and we still don't know whether Eric Hipple will come back in on the sidelines here's the kick [Applause] at the 30-yard line by Neil Anderson it is going to be HIPAA back in at quarterback for Detroit and here's another look at the play that he got hurt on and notice Herman hunter he's 36 over there he was helping out on the double over there and Marshall came in on the inside and made the hit like they blitz the safety Duerson over there and Hunter went and picked up the safety and the linebacker came in untouched Jones and James in the backfield now with him Daud Eric Hipple stuffed us he's still in there play action here again he wants it all he's going for Chadwick play by Gary fencing [Applause] it ended up being double coverage with Reggie Phillips and fencing now the pass was underthrown you can see the Chadwick has a step if the ball was thrown say five yards further down the field he might have had a shot at it but fencing dropped back and they ended up having the inside outside of course Gary fencing plays way deep middle and he helped to one side to the other depending on the defense so it wasn't exactly a man-to-man situation the Lions are throwing on first down and that's have a shot at the Bears that's me you've got a throw but if you don't make it there's big trouble nickel now looks like he's going inaudible and second in tits [Applause] the rookie James falls [Applause] before the HIPAA maven [Music] they're gonna call it down at the 40-yard line and boy Wilbur Marshall 58 he's like lightning he time to snap perfectly hit him saw him comin said I'm getting out of the way Richard dent 95 zero the refrigerator knocks the ball loose and then it was kicked by stringer I think accidentally and then the fight for the ball they lose 27 yards on the play as Gary James recovered and the Lions are in big big trouble actually they ended up having a block on Marshall it was a James Gary James did a lot on that plate Marshall fail the lines are back on their own 4 yard line Darrell Rodgers wondered what is happening out there on that football field they have not had a chance to establish anything third down 37 what do you call watching his team go in Reverse you really have to be careful now you're inside the 5-yard line the Bears can play loose they can take chances they can do anything they want you were right though about what you thought the Lions would do at the top of this telecast Johnny they would go when they wouldn't go strength strength with the Bears and go witness the weakness and so far [Applause] it's tough to make [Applause] and James is down after short in activity Carl plan number 80 Troy it lion involved will bring up a fourth down in a kicking situation for the Lions the Bears are almost assured here field position is Mike black will be taking from Minnesota has taken a three nothing lead over Cleveland and they trailed the Bears by one game it appears that the Bears going to get good field position here in black picked up very well last week has come on but he has had some precarious moments the first dangerous situation [Applause] that gets it away end over end orange takes it in to 35 and he's down near the 30 but flags are down at about the 10 yard line like pepper Lin and his crew will get it sorted out it appears to be against the Lions more than likely the bears will refuse it and take possession a 30 yard fund in a five yard return by Barnes well I'd take a 30 yard field position wouldn't you at the 30-yard line you don't wanna kick again take a chance of fumbling on the return illegal formation offense penalty is the pine our style Rogers over his shoulder and the light blue sweater there Wayne fussing Betsey coordinate Payton and soui remain in there now with McMahon Mike Ditka told us earlier this week that the Bears just play better with that man he also mustard we established the running game feels that the team has gotten away from the run especially last week it's intercepted Vaughn Mitchell the rookie intercepts [Applause] over 32 it was intended for Keith Court ago the 17-yard returned by the rookie free safety davon Mitchell the pass was underthrown and Mitchell picked it off because Oracle was was out there now McMahon had all day to throw this ball in the partial roll out there pass blocking was there and you have to attribute this to a little bit of rustiness he hasn't played that much he says it grabs on him sometime his shoulder when he throws but he just threw the ball short did not see Devon Mitchell who was come on he as you know he's a he's a rookie and he started to get around the ball a lot more and the Lions come up with a big play to keep themselves in this football game we're carried by James doesn't get much Mitchell second interception of the year rookie out of Iowa here's a second look at McMahon and you can just see there is absolutely no pressure all the time in the world sometimes that when you have all the time in the world it's it's the toughest thing to do and I just don't think he saw it Devon Mitchell dropping off that time he was in the short zone they had a couple of extra defensive backs in there okay second and eight has the first down Mike Richardson finally had to make a defensive play Gary James with 303 yards so far this season one touchdown and watch Keith Dorney number seven he turns up the field he has come back with a vengeance you talk about somebody coming back he's got a nice block there and then James did the rest and has finally knocked out of bounds the the Lions offensive line has really improved with Dorney coming back in the acquisition to Salem not so many injuries what was Bragg's come on time by James first and ten now from their own 49 James it may be a couple James Jones said about this man Craig James we mentioned I'm gonna find rookie here he said at some point in time this guy is going to be the workhorse see how he's doing now compared to the other rookies in FC Rubin Mays from New Orleans under seven yards last week leaves with 480 in James's third and James is a great compliment to James Jones I mean they really the Lions really haven't had a one-two punch as you know since upper instincts got hurt there on the wet spot the wet part of the field right now second an a this is John big hole one of delay and he's across the 40 and has another Detroit first down Wilbur Marshall coming over on the head well there was a case of James Jones keeping his eyes open the hole was more insight and they reeled Steve McMichael in and he just kind of played off it and the Lions moving right down the field as they did against the Packers they rushed for 250 yards against the Packers and you can see their history they they don't convert their turnovers and the points as much as the other teams do they have a chance here Jones again these fifth leading rusher gets maybe two or three today's game is 543 yards on a season Rivera making a hit at middle linebacker Berra said told us Johnny that he's but if he got to start what she did Singletary endearing he was going to be so anxious that he'd had to be cautious and not over running the ball carrier that's right there's a number 59 Ron Rivera a personal draft choice of Mike nice chance now because single things never team second and seven [Applause] pressure again Rubick at the 20 and he's pulled down by Duerson and fencing near the 10 yard line a good touch on that ball 26 yard game thrown by hippo Rob Rubick and they didn't come with the all-out let's see 22 Dave Duerson right there he's covering Rob Rubick and Rubik gave an inside move and came to the outside and Duerson went to the inside and was beaten on the play and fencing comes over but the double-team is too late as Rob Rubick put a good move on Dave Duerson is just inside - cannot get a first down Jimmy Giles [Music] and one day of practice for the history James Jones gets a couple Otis Wilson 55 on the hip junior trials in there that's actually called picking up the system when it baby hurry but he's been around them was amazing what Hipple told us he said you know their system down at Tampa Bay was numbered and terminology was much the same as ours if it weren't for audibles he said Giles probably could play the whole game the audible system is what he doesn't know he's a four-time Pro Bowler David Lewis is hurt Jimmy trial [Applause] the Bears [Applause] play of the drive for 17 in the first quarter in the caucus movie gets away from Dorset but Hampton has third sack of the day for the bear and all caused by blitz is number 22 de Deus right here in front of your screen he comes looking from the outside but he doesn't get the tackle but he enables dan Hampton to come off his block and then get the tackle so a lot of times you know that blitz work just because dorsum made pitbull move around in the pocket and dan Hampton comes up with the sad dynamo dangerous dead or sack of the season [Applause] a wide receiver for the Lions ball from the champ nipple has to unload and direction to James from the sin where the Bears are bringing everything but the kitchen sink against the Lions today at that time Otis Wilson came right up the middle James Jones got there to put a block on but everything rushed tipple so though now they'll depend on Eddie Murray and he's a pretty guy pretty good guy to depend on well it was a pretty good drive to by the Lions good position to get three out of it Eddie Murray 6 of 9 this year his first attempt from 20 to 29 yards all year he has not attempted [Applause] [Music] the most dependable kickers in the history of the National Football League miss so the Lions failed to get on the board and that'll stun him a little well it must have been too short for him like we said he hadn't to practice it but you can tell by the reaction he missed it the Bears still lead it 7 nothing 1st quarter [Applause] now three for two remaining in the first quarter I'm still in there with the man portico in motion the pasta jitka his fourth season as head coach of the Bears has turned into one of the best dressers on the sidelines Jonathan asked on football he's gotten a lot of publicity out of it because all of a sudden he dresses like he comes right out of one of gentlemen's quarterly there but Darrell Rodgers he was even impressed he said hey Mike would you get those trims he's that's not too bad let me know where he got him so he's impressing everybody even the opposition looking for a price tag or maybe his wallet second and nine for the bear [Music] Sooey nowhere maybe a loss of the yarn Eric Williams a nose tackle this slides out and makes a great play well he is so quick down there head 8 solo tackles last last week now look at C you can see Jerry J Hill goober trying to get position on him he just throws him out and then makes the tackle on Suey or the old necktie tackle Eric Williams showing some great quickness and able to beat the quick block by Jay hildenburg who was one of the best at the Bears Center number 63 we had a big week last week against the Rams ten tackles in that one third and 10 now the follows on the 20-yard line but he'll be short of the first down the Lions will get the ball back Demetrius Johnson making a hit from strong safety [Applause] the Lions who have failed to put a dent on the scoreboard get another shot here and should end up with pretty good field position deep manly is back to return this one Buford will kick it away for averaging 41 point 7 yards of fun coming into today's game it's a high snap it takes a neutral bounce works down by Tim Reitman about the 46 yard line a 30 yard kick no return the Lions will have it their own 46 when we return Ben McMahon on the Chicago sideline Johnny bothered with the back and shoulder problems he told us Friday that the shoulder problems were muscle spasms yes sometimes when he puts his arm back to throw it it grabs on it but he says he can play and that's the thing that Mike Ditka wanted to know can he play or can he not play in the last couple three weeks it's been off again and on again there's been some feuds between the two which have become even more troublesome for the team because some of the team is wondering hey what's what's the situation with Jim McMahon that's about three doctors well that's a team doctor and one free shoulder one for his back so it's hard to keep track of all the medical reports right now on McMahon first intent from the 47 now for the Lions pickle - the rookie game and you'll get a couple three notice Wilson again on you know under the system that the Lions have now Eric Hipple doesn't throw it downfield nearly as much although he has started in this game but he's been completing 65 percent of his passes now that's very high it's made people a more conservative quarterback but more effective I mean the Lions offense hasn't done all that bad with the last few games and they had a nice drive this last time but unfortunately mr. bill goes to Mary Kimbo is the guy that they're gonna be going with he told us in order to win this game they need a couple of big plays second and eight here I'm running down in the first quarter the Chadwick near the 40 and they'll have the first down yardage Reggie Phillips defensively remember that battle we told you about Louis Brown and Richard dent number 95 well here's a an example of it 75 blocking on 95 Lomas brown the number one draft choice last year holds Richard dent right out of there does a nice job he gets an A on that well Miss Brown said you've got to set up perfectly against Richard dent because if you don't he'll come back underneath you and get the sack anyway he lines up so wide now wave we'll see an example of this you know we'll see how well he's not lied to this time well anybody and they'll have another first down at about the 25 yard line a 15 yard pickup before Wilbur Marshall makes the stop and that will be the last play of the first quarter so the Lions are on the move here at the Bears lead by a score of 7 nothing sports coverage of the National Football League is sponsored by Toyota builder of huff powerful reliable trucks Toyota and by GTE chief know GTE [Music] we have played 15 minutes here at Soldier Field in Chicago and for the Detroit Lions the bad news is they are still scoreless in the first quarter of games played in the 1986 season the good news form is right now they have the ball first and ten on the 25-yard line of the Chicago Bears and have shown today that they can't move the football summer weather certainly move it up better than the Bears are so far preliminary motion down there and flags are down Richard dent we saw the matchup - he'll have with Volvo round number 75 offense five-yard first time that was Lomas brown he said you know the way dent lines up so wide it just makes me uncomfortable perhaps up put drew him offsides that time but so far he's done a pretty good job on depth to plays and roll we watched him specifically need it very well so now it's first and 15 let's see what the Lions elect to do [Applause] Jones and James the remaining backs behind hippo this is the fullback Jones will get a couple now let's go to New York for an NFL update and Brent Musburger well Wayne we've got an upset brewing right up the freeway in Milwaukee there is Randy Wright we're going to mark Lewis it's 40 no Packers over the Niners the Niners are at minus 10 total yards by Mike velocity back to Wayne Walker thank you very much Brent 7-nothing here the Bears leading we're to beginning to the second quarter second and 13 now for Detroit [Applause] he'll still get scrap and it was dent but Bucky came in underneath him that time John that's right hip we'll just stood right in there didn't he he wasn't going to move he was waiting for the receiver to to break open and the Bears had good coverage down the field now that will come from the left side of your screen and boy he just really buried Lomas brown that time you got to give that one the dent sure do Lomas brown I think he got tripped up on some feet in there and dent over the top of it she got a admire him post courage he doesn't flinch at all when he's in that pocket he's a tough competitor third and 13 especially when after what happened to him on the rover Marshall wasn't him connor and leonard thompson in the game Lyons Mike Richardson defense did he stay inbounds [Applause] with a great defensive play [Applause] well that was a super play by Richardson as the Lions elected to roll out away from the pass rush and Yossi bland on the going to the outside here comes Richardson who had him covered all the way and then the question is did he get control before he went out of bounds the officials say yet and we will get a chance to see if you agree he's got it now in control looks like both that's a tough call yeah it's a tough call tough call but a great play by Ridge was [Applause] follows on the 21 yard line now Calvin Thomas and Walter Payton are the running backs the play stands on the replay the play stands this call so they were looking at it the NFL replay official was looking at it and it stands is called it'll be Bears ball now remember they have that advantage of a couple of a ways to look at it that we do not have but from this I don't think it would be conclusive that he did have control now that other that right foot I don't I still can't call up to you know not there on that one bears will take it though first and ten for the 21 [Applause] Calvin Thomas takes a handoff that flags are down before the play [Applause] offensively Johnny the Bears brawl flight offense number 62 five-yard first time Bears are kind of stop and go on office [Applause] [Music] one thing I should clarify when I say that the instant replay booth has advantage of something they have it advantage of the line play that they can run in slow motion they don't have any other viewpoints the frame we do they can get it back faster than rioter [Applause] Paul now is on the 16 yard line [Music] or to go in motion [Music] the lady pink [Applause] good play defensively by the Lions good team defense on that Wayne Galloway making a hit Demetrious Johnson its gang tackling they're playing inspired football they're on defense because that time Jimmy Williams really got knocked down but the other players came in did their job and and made the tackle Marc ports had a good block for the Bears but heck the rest of the lines were their white jerseys all over the place and the Lions as you know have a pretty good record against Walter Payton better than the other NFC Central teams they allow him an average of 80 yards every time they play against him where his looked at he gets 111 against Green Bay and so the Lions overall have done better than most he's only had six 100-yard games against [Music] Berry's first start against the Lions Walter Payton gains zero yards on ten carries Chicago seven nothing stay with us the coordinator of the Lions and his players said that he's been pumped up all week Johnny he gets pumped up more than the players do and he has got him going now because the Bears have only ten yards of total offense a good situation for any defense here down 18 to go [Applause] [Music] Thomas the backfield with McMahon or to go in motion and deep drop screen it to Thomas he's got some room Jimmy Williams closes it up immediately and holds him to a short gain let's go now to New York again and Brent Musburger well Wayne the New York Jets go ahead of New Orleans on this touchdown pass ken O'Brien to altoon 44 catches this year by two and he leads the NFL and the 49ers have just scored in Milwaukee that should go to 14-7 let's go back to Wayne Walker Thank You Brent both of those games closing up seven point difference in this one third down now 11 yards to go for a first down for the Bears trouble moving the ball offensively so far and this one against the Lions Dennis gentry back there now the shot [Applause] for the first down hit though he may have it or he may be just a foot or two sharp we'll see how they market he was very very close to picking it up on the sidelines with that dive and he was very conscious of that first down marker because he went for it he had Payton blocking for him you keep big first down for the Bears win it where Lions had him in big trouble second and 18 Rogers said about what man without the Bears are not a playoff he got he's kind of testing his shoulder a little bit here is McMahon I'm the drop can't find the receiver then takes off he's so quick he got away there from Cofer I believe it was and then down here he had the defensive linebackers in a bind there Jimmy Williams finally gets in on the tackle but not before McMahon gets the first down and I believe that's their first first down is there it is very first first down for the Bears he needed 11 yards and picked it up on that run Paul is now on the 31 yard line of Chicago his numbers play with him and without him they are a different team Thomas and Peyton are the running backs play-action Cofer gets up and gets him again that was mine Cofer who missed him originally persistence pays off in that time McMahon he they did an example of a man's quickness off the dime his first two or three steps he felt Cofer coming number 55 and he'll get away from the mood here's here comes the Blitz and then he gets away from me but Cofer 55 will end up coming back as McMahon cuts back and you got to give him a an A for effort on that one Michael Cofer with the tackle great move by McMahon no originally he kind of leaned forward and then spun out back behind that's right and Cofer is really adapted to that linebacker position you know he's been a down line nine back here and he said he's a big linebacker at a small defense HP yes where you put second and three now in [Applause] the first down there Demetrious Johnson on the defensive play that man was nailed as he released well they'll get a shot at in here as you can take a look there's no penalty call he got rid of the ball the people were in motion as they were keep Ferguson with the hit on McMahon illegal hit because his body was falling going forward and it's impossible to stop in midair Jim McMahon finally moving the Bears but that Lions lead in first downs five to two first downs in succession for the Bears now [Music] [Applause] from the 44 in the first half this is Peyton the Lions are all over vernon maxwell the inside linebacker steps up and makes the play the Bears continue to have problems on first down and also problems establishing to run they were second in the NFC and rushing 165 yards per game last week it went down considerably so far they haven't been able to establish the wedding-day you know like like there used to this world okay got just 28 yards in that game against the Vikings last week [Applause] second and eight the mayans show bliss and contact well the 30-second clock went down also there was movement so we'll have to see what the what the call is here tell you one thing Jenny there's a lot of bodies flying around both teams are jacked up and getting after each other playing football offsides Detroit a bit anxious on the Blitz [Applause] well they were faking blitz there is denied deep in middle the line was Johnny it's what your life your order you get your hand on your down alignment and it causes him to jump they all got a piece of that therapy Rogers in his second season with the Lions ten and thirteen career record in Detroit twenty years as a college coach and a successful one second and three now for the bears all is just across midfield [Applause] [Music] kimly Calvin Thomas and he'll have the first down across [Applause] let's blow you off the ball inside the Bears make it three consecutive first downs now on this Drive ball is marked at the 44 yard line and then Thomas remained the running backs and broken up by Demetrius Johnson on a good defensive play there was a blitz up the middle that time by the Lions and that kind of obstructed McMahon's viewpoint but the Lions taken a page out of the Bears defense and they put that blitz on up the middle Detroit's got some active linebackers now that you know Maxwell and Harrell most guys go for though they're quick they're fast they can all run basically they're all the outside linebacker type where there were a lot of three four [Applause] second in town this is paid for trying to get wine [Applause] the Lions are swarming defensively Walter Payton Keith Ferguson offensive an had that stacked up over on the left side [Applause] so the Bears now go to a third and ten situation they bring in Lu Barnes and here comes the Lions defensive adjustment kritis green is one of the players come in Bostick comes in they bring in the whole slew of defensive backs figuring that the Bears will throw the ball but they're in the shotgun you've got Payton close Gentry up to see could be a nifty play watch out third and ten Jeffery in motion [Applause] for the first down will he go good adjustment a good throw a 14-yard pickup man to Willy golf he juggled the ball but I don't think it hit the ground Norton was on the coverage and it was tough coverage this was a tough in traffic catch by Willy golf as you will see 29 Norton was right there with him and Willie Gault hung onto the ball and here's a Wayne fonts reaction he's watching that play because it was a critical third down play good he says darning so now the Lions are in trouble here 11th play of dispossession of this drive for the Bears cows and Thomas and Walter Payton in the backfield he'll get very little for Jimmy Williams slides in to make the stop grind amount football right now for the Bears there's no doubt Detroit playing inspired football they actually they're trailing seven nothing should be seven three or maybe seven six they were down on bear territory twice so now we come to the situation where Mike Ditka knows hey if the Bears if we can score here and put them down 14 nothing you know you can get them on that intercepted by the Lions in Demetrius Johnson flags are down oh wait a minute flags are down near the 32 yard line and we'll see what it is that was right around where the quarterback was wasn't it where McMahon was kimberlyn and his crew talking it over there there may have been some infraction down the field but then with McMahon way out to the sidelines they may discount that we'll have to see what the karl islets unnecessary roughness number 76 after the pathless putt the ball belongs to detroit half the distance to the goal called it on Eric Williamson nose tackle the Lions will retain possession after the interception by Demetrius Johnson well he all of a sudden turned to be an offensive player didn't know how to do it who did it wrong I guess but here's the play as McMahon rolls up I think it goes off Emery more hits hands in Ted Johnson Moorhead is 87 it's a little bit back behind him and then there is 21 Demetrius Johnson with the one-handed snag right out of there now you're not able to see the [Applause] the I was inside of the coin first in ten now our Detroit is getting involved here at Soldier Field play-action knock down and almost intercepted by Wilbur Marshall he had six he could have danced now there's quick hits pass out the Chadwick and Wilbur Marsh chose covers the back coming out there you see him 32 sports to cover the back but he spotted the play then goes back in the zone and almost picked it off wouldn't that have been something what a game that would have been for that's two touchdowns ready second in ten he slipped us a five and falls forward maybe for a yard or two [Applause] slick turf got James on that cut he said he doesn't like to play on turf he prefers grass Johnny yeah he likes the grass and didn't like turf but he he has to do it he's getting used to it I kind of believe he had a forty yards against Green Bay unless you of course on a grass field and said he has [Applause] it's 39 hand off the Jonas he's near the first down and hasn't a good tough running towards the end he really finished off that run [Music] big play for the Lions as you can see hippo was looking and he saw those linebackers right up there close didn't know if he was going to get the blitz or not they did not let say dropped off and it was just the reverse hand off of the counter kind of he followed Lomas brown the tackle see Lomas brown 75 he got in his way but he still got the first down big play as James Jones comes through again ten-yard pick up lose the ball out to the 18 yard line for its first in town in the first half bears lead at seven to nothing to get a couple once again let's go to New York for an update from Brent Musburger all right Wayne here's a play that just set up a jet touchdown ken O'Brien pulling out with deep to the slot man Wesley Walker and then freamon McNeil punched it in for the 114 six Jets let's go back to Wayne thank you very much Brent Wayne Walker along with Johnny Morris here at Soldier Field we're in the second quarter 4:30 remaining in the first half and the Bears lead by a score of 7 to nothing the Lions have the football on the 21 yard line stay with us guard even left guard as the Lions acquired this year earlier from the Houston Oilers replaced in a lineup by Steve Kenny starter at Philadelphia but that can be a costly one because Lions offensive line was gelling with sailing the left guard and dorney second here to follow us on the 21-yard Jones penetration again by Wilbur Marshall who's having a career day and that made the defensive play Harvey Salem we understand has an ankle sprain I don't know if he will return or not to this one when Marshall continues to you Provo and that's Gary he can run like a deer - he's tough run like deer good hands Herman hunter and leonard thompson in there now for Detroit in this long yardage situation passing situation third and eight we'll have to be careful under pressure dumps it off and it's complete but it'll be short of the first down yardage complete the carl bland will under some pressure blitz couldn't find anybody didn't have enough time and got the reception but not enough and then that's the payoff for the Blitz the Bears blitzing quite a bit in this game Mike black will kick it away for Detroit Lou Barnes is deep for the Bears [Music] where it's a three-minute mark of the second quarter three minutes remaining [Music] Barnes at 2:35 almost found a seam and is down at the 45-yard line as a 39-yard punt in a 10-yard return next Sunday of CBS a big one Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants always a rivalry Johnny yes it is Dallas one I think the opening opening day of the season this year they did they put it on a Monday night game that was really the first time that the NFL got a good look at her shil Walker now they're getting a real good one I think the Giants quarterback well it all starts next Sunday with the NFL today 12:30 Eastern Time on CBS first and ten bears from their own 45 Neil Anderson is in a honey man receiver you'll be just a couple yards short of the first down before Jimmy Williams hits him McMahon is getting up limping he got hit by Eric Williams there but what a play by McMahon the Lions had the rush on him and he just looked around looked around darted one way and ended up getting a pass completion out of it almost a first down great thing about him is when he's in that pocket and he's moving and sliding around hurry he never loses his concentration downfield he sees the entire field he knows where everybody is I mean it's an ability that it's almost it spawning you you don't develop it I mean you can improve it but it's like speed you either have it or you don't yes Larry Bird right you can see the card McMahon can see the field it's a two-minute warning bears lead seven to nothing and they're in control the NFL it's David Archer the Atlantic quarterback who played high school football dur where is silver springs I'm the only guy in this booth I know that knows where it is don't tell me what is he I'd go there I tried to look for it one time I couldn't find it myself yeah I like that Falcons class second and one for the Bears Payton and soui are the running backs this is Sooey he has the first down Matsui who has not been as productive this year for the Bears as in past seasons giant well the Bears have a wealth of running backs now that they're trying to get into football game Calvin Thomas and they try and get Anderson in certain situations but Suey does the job when he's in there he comes up vital plays he'll be near another first down at the 45 yard line a couple yards short of it before Michael Cofer runs him out Minnesota continues to pressure the Bears they lead people in 10 to 3 was one thing Gary pencak said this year is different last year now we didn't have anybody on our tail that's right the Vikings could be what 6 and 2 if they win that game so the Bears have some pressure last year everything was their way all the way they got ahead early and stayed there although last year before they were beaten by Miami 112 more narrow before Minnesota beat them last week that makes him 24 of their last 26 that's pretty good second in cheer man the throw the Flex is on it's outside the pocket for the first down but maybe just be butter so short of it before Vernon Maxwell came over and nailed him and boy did he nail him too he had the shot at him i sticked him he hai sticked him and stuck he right on the sidelines but we talked about dick Whipple being courageous this guy is too he's banged up but when you see him run for those first downs he's not sliding in for him I think one of the things that bothered him when they had a team meeting this this week of the air things out there were some players who wondered whether McMahon was really hurt as bad as he you know thought people were questioning him because he has played hurt before there's no question about that third and one from the shotgun [Applause] the 27th James Sooey has another Bears first down and the mayor's will take time 1:12 remaining in the first half the Bears lead seven to nothing and they're threatening and we were talking about Matsui and here's a reason why he's a valuable man now this is a check down pass and you'll see suis 26 blocking on Jimmy Williams puts it the little hit then and just comes down for the little pass now watch the movie puts on Vernon Maxwell and Maxwell's no slouch as he comes forward he just dekes him out and gets the extra yardage is not a burner but he gets some vital yardage for you in your name just like bears first and ten now the ball is on the 27 yard line 1:12 remaining and a half the bear one time out of the shotgun [Music] Sooey it's legal I told you huh but Matsui is it see the things that he can do for a football team records the guard alertly got the carom watch 26 Suez and all that jam and then McCain gets in trouble here so he turns around but not in time right off his helmet and that you bet it is marked boards right down the field like a fullback and that is a legal play yeah they're going to talk it over down there but it's got to be legal as long as the Hindi receiver was touched by illegal receiver in a backfield and then caught by an ineligible lineman but he now is eligible the pass is complete and Steve fuller has time to come into the game for the Bears why do you think what a timer please put 56 on the clock McMahon is something wrong with his ankle or his shin there he's on the sidelines and so Steve fuller has come into the game with 51 is that what we're supposed to have 51 seconds did they say they said to reset it so we'll see what it is there's 56 on there now six can't tell how serious McMahon's injury is but I know he got it several plays ago and kept playing for a while all around there now he's completed 58 percent of his passes this season two touchdowns one interception he was a starter last week and the loss to the Vikings 2nd and 2 hands forward to Peyton out of the shotgun it's back to the line of scrimmage and that's about it Vernon Maxwell an offensive play for Detroit McMahon on the sidelines comes another reason what might be kept trying to say his wife you know is this another injury for Jim McMahon is he gonna this time third and to fuller the right man they have the first down inside the 15 about the 13 yard line the nucleus Johnson one of three lions and on the hip Hernan Maxwell again 20 seconds now remaining [Applause] I'm out take their last 20 seconds to go here in the first half they leave Detroit 7-nothing you're on Atlantic quarterback David Archer and Johnny we just got word from the Bears sideline preliminary word anyway that is McMahon's shoulder that has flared up well his shoulder was sore and maybe there's something flared up there but he also was limping very badly too so maybe that's a minor injury but he also has the sore back and as a sore kidney so he's really kind of banged up that was a good point you brought out is that man injury Pro if it is well I don't think it was any question that over the past few years he has been injury prone is such a valuable asset when he's well [Music] it looks like talking to Emery Moorehead there and obviously he's explaining he couldn't do something with the ball that he wanted to well remember he told us about the muscle spasm whenever he raised his arm to throw the muscle would spasm perhaps that's what's flared up out there on him Neal Anderson is in the in the back field now with Walter Payton Tim reitman at one of the tight end spot at the tight end they have a first and 10 from the 12 20 seconds he really did a Houdini is just right on the Blitz he was almost in the grasp James Griffin came in on the safety blitz well that was a really a great play by fuller because the Lions had him dead to rights could of knocked him back about five or eight yards to make the field goal a little longer but I don't think it would have made that much difference but fuller got a quick baptism to this football game didn't these defenses are geared up in this way 15 seconds now Butler will come in 9 yard field goal attempt no timeouts the Bears can't take a chance of running another play this will be about a I said a 29-yard [Music] and it's good seriously 29 yard field goal by Kevin Butler another good drive ymax by fuller coming in for the injured Jim McMahon Bears have been pretty good drives now in this second quarter after faltering in the first next Saturday CBS sports college football Florida State Seminoles it's the number one Miami Hurricanes to the special time noon eastern MLB the Los Angeles Lakers in the Houston Rockets on stage a free man the season premiere of the cbss all next Saturday [Music] 10 seconds remaining here in the first half of this one [Music] I'm sure we'll get a injury report on that man at half time that his problems are that is a trainer Freddie Kato along with Jim McMahon and foresees the men kind of he tries to keep everybody put together and get him on the football field Freddie Cato I'm sure he had a lot to do with Mike Singletary not playing in right now the story is his Jim McMahon they've had a long series Detroit in the bears bears lead at 59 to 42 Gerald team and my old team I know I don't want to hear it Lions have had some great season back in the fifties right before you came here you know I played against the Bears 31 times career and I got a I got a mark for everyone what you earned it what were you retarted a good time and after you retired we'd beat you six times in a row let's catch up a little bit turn in Oscars death putting a yard line will be a timeout call with five seconds remaining on the clock odd bill making special teams hit a nine yard return Oscar Smith was just recently added to the roster activated for five draft choice Indiana a foot or a toe problem training Kent looking on ironed and this brought him back alvin more you know I thought he was a pretty good ballplayer you know he's been all-purpose not least by the for the Lions but I always thought he did a pretty good job he did where's young Oscar Smith people now first in 1028 at the 30 scream two jobs half will be over that will be the last play of the first half [Applause] good tough defensive struggle here that's the end of the first half with the score Chicago 10 Detroit nothing but halftime stay with us the NFL today [Applause] game where the name black and blue division came from well it really holds up and actually there was just the one big play as a difference in the in the score is that Wilbur Marshall played with the sack and that picking up the ball for the touchdown Jim McMahon was 8 for 12 63 yards of course his shoulder is the big situation right now and let's take a look at the play that we're told that McMahon re-injured the shoulder and the back that was that little pass at hilt off Matsui helmet to mark ports and Jimmy Williams and Keith Ferguson put the crunch on McMahon and that is where he strained his back and his shoulder and we do not know whether he's coming back in the game but he's out on the football field we spent a little bit of time talking about his shoulder we did mention that he had it back and he said it's you know it's kind of a reminisce from that a kidney problem that he had earlier it's kind of down in the same area so he's out there throwing right now and we'll get a final word on him I know before this half starts and here is the big halftime statistics turnovers two by each team but the Bears converted one of them for the 7 point touchdown and therein lies a difference because the offensive statistics are very similar a hundred and three yards to 105 yards and both team have had just about equal possession of the ball CBS Sports coverage of the National Football League will continue after this message and a word from your local stations Strawbridge of the National Football League is sponsored by Bud Light everything else is just a light chrysler-plymouth we're working together to be the best and buy Ramada we're business travelers always get the all star treatment the overriding story of this game right now is the injury condition of Jim McMahon he's taking some warm-up tosses on the sidelines and it appears that he will start in the second half for the Bears that's Steve fuller who came in for him in the first half he's there with a jacket on McMahon has taken some throws and been over and talked to Mike Ditka a couple times so obviously he's going to be ready Jerry well he's going to give it a try in the second half apparently anytime you see one go to back put the jacket on the other one doesn't good ideas who's going to go in the game as the Lions both came off for the second half trailing 10 nothing what about the Lions you see back there deep is Dennis Gentry Thomas Sanders Alliance now I don't think that they can afford to come off the game plan they established in the first half they move the ball fairly decently again severe Eddie Murray now we'll kick it the high short kick but Sanders takes on the five [Applause] to see across the 30 to the 32 yard line before the special teams hit is made by William Graham and there goes Jim McMahon out on the field he's wearing that number 9 he's got those high-top black shoes it looks like Bill Wade used to play for the Bears at those hi high-top shoes detroit defense against the rush the last three games Matsui and Walter pigment in here now [Applause] more than likely on the ground and start out that way and anticipate who gets two or three hate was only seven yards for seven carries in the first half so he has not been able to break Lucy or against Detroit in an offer of 28 yards last week papers production is down quite a bit McMahon was 8 of 13 in that first half with two interceptions 3 overs worth of story in that first half great individual play on defense by the bears Wilber Marshall is really the big difference in this game second and six [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] down his here midfield from the safety spot 10 gained by suing nice blocking by the bears as Mark ports creates a hole air and on Williams James Harrow was blocked and Matsui who as you recall rushed for a hundred yards against Detroit last week in Jay hildenburg number 63 throws the nice block on Eric Williams and creases him out of the play and soui was able to go right up the middle Matsui Williams is a guy that gets penetration sometimes first intent now pursuing in a couple their Inc Williams told us a different burg probably was the quickest Center in the league from watching the film so he hasn't played against he misses his first crack at him Eric Williams at the nose tackle started this year he said he'll can bring that man right there though it's got to be the quickest of all the NFL centers his first move is just tremendously fast and he likes to cut too in other words hit you high and then cut you at the knees and Noah knows tap a likes that you know that was pretty good play by Chris green on that last on that last play man in the Bears looking at second and seven [Music] to throw its complete near first down the Artie's been little bit short golf on a receiving it don't mark it just about a foot or two short of the first down yardage Willie Gault who's averaging nineteen point five yards per catch but you know who leads the bears in for kitchen guy they call white lightning Keith were to go 21 yards per catch he would think it would be golf where he goes had a couple of big games but Willie Gulf as you know catches those bombers and they haven't really gone with the bomb to to God yet I probably won't do it here first down [Music] that was good team defense Johnny because Suey got an excellent block on a corner out there but the breast of the Lions responded where the lines are all over the place they elected to go white going from kind of the i-formation way deep and look at Devon Mitchell 31 he came up there avoided the block by Hilton Burt got some help and they knocked her out of bounds big defensive stand for Detroit get a chance to get the ball back third in less than the yard and they come through with a big play Pete Manley is back for Detroit Corey Buford will fund [Music] triangle away flags are down let's it go the end zone for a touchback flags are down near the line of scrimmage 44 yard kick that rolled into the end zone but we listen to chuck cover lane he'll tell us what occurred he wants to have a conference first get them all together and make sure they've got the call right if it was a defensive holding call or something like that against the Lions it's a 15-3 is illegally downfield for the offense 36 is offside for the defense they will upset we will replay the down [Applause] it would have been a Detroit ball on 220 without those penalties dan Breen's was one of the men who completed did the infraction so they would have had it on the 20 we'll see how it comes out with with the play going over again the defensive team when it's less than than five yards to go that's our motors down it sure is that's the last thing you say when you leave that special teams huddle don't anybody be offsides on this one so they'll just re kick it [Music] because you see when lady to have not the most offsides again it is in the ship the Lions only had 10 min on the field kicks this one straightaway [Music] one tackler gets across the 22 about the 23 yard line as a 33 yard kick 12 yard return Lions will start from the 23 when we return another reminder and one you won't want to miss we've seen some tough hitting here in this ball game this afternoon between the Lions and the Bears look sounded to be the same Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants at 12:30 Eastern Time when it starts with the NFL today waiting arrivals Eastern Division I always go at each other the Lions often say Harvey Salem when outfit injury is back in there at left guard now Mike Singletary remains out first the throw intended for the rookie Gary James who was open Thunder thrown by hippo well the way the Lions are playing their offense they've got to complete those kind of facets he was open and the hippo just under threw him he was under a little bit of pressure but their offense is Darrell Rodgers told us history said our offenses boring boring boring he says but we've made it go down the field piece by piece well those are the kind that they have to complete because if they don't they're in a second contending situation with the Bears are the most dangerous he said I know we're boring because we can't take ourselves out of games [Applause] 46 the Bears in there [Applause] do listen [Applause] Chadwicks yard run of the 35 yard line on Reggie Phillips the cornerback a 46 yard pickup and a great throw an excellent throw under pressure Dave Duerson blitz number 22 but juts James Jones 30 picks him up and then hippo goes down the field throws deep for for Chadwick and it was right on the money Reggie Phillips gets beat and the Lions come up with the big play against the Chicago Bears and when the Bears go into that defense that's what you've got to do suppressive here Johnny and you've got to admire this being the next wide receiver here's the adjustment Chadwick made at the end Wright comes right over the top of his head those are the toughest to kiss right over the top of your head because you you lose sight of it for just an instant Jeff Chadwick big play 31 yard line of the Bears first and ten for Detroit and will the throw again couple pumps it goes for Chadwick again is complete and he'll have a first down inside the 20-yard line Reggie Phillips again defensively a 12 yard pickup on that one and you talk about timing that time Chad was just coming out of his move great pass blocking coming out of his move and the pass was right on the dime that Phillips is plainly but deep we didn't want to get beat deep twice and they gave you some they gave him some room but the key here was if the Lions blocked the Bears there was no blitz involved and the Bears are not getting all that much pressure without linebacker help on the Blitz or safety blitzes Chadwick who comes out of his cuts at top speed first and ten the 18 yard line the Owens checks the signal because the crowd noise it's picked up and released and is complete the bland inside the 15-yard line to pick up of six or seven Mike Richardson defensively for the Bears it looked like an audible perhaps John when Eric Hipple has to throw a lot the Lions aren't very successful today 8 for 17 and the one interception he faces a second and 5 here this is where I figured James Jones has got to be a part of the action right it goes hit on five of his last six was on the 13 yard line on the Bulls again cut it up and be sure to the first down near the 10-yard line Ron Rivera made the hit well there seem to be some confusion in the lions often see back though they couldn't hear too well they're checking the signals for the audible and but the key guy to go there was James Jones get you 2 or 3 yards and put the Bears in a bind it's a third and about what to one and a half long about - a lot - yeah long - Aaron don't you folder in - down territory being ten down if they don't get it here if they get it close they'd run it again yeah don't they hear they have to kick it yeah it's too early in the game we still have 10 minutes left in the third period but this is a big play depends on what happens on this one [Applause] people to throw and it's complete that might be short of the first down again it's going to be very tied in and we'll see where they spot it pencak made the hit immediately may have kept him short of the first down they'll probably bring the chains out well that time hip will beat the Blitz the Bears came with the all out everybody but the kitchen sink Duerson came from the outside plus a linebacker hip we'll saw it coming and dumped the pass and it's a tough coverage for for offensive to stop that completion from where he's coming from you know mode usually in a situation you see one side or the other gesturing do they have it or they don't have it but you don't see anything here right now even though the players out there let me get my binoculars on it and see if I can give you some advances there's a guy that's hot guy in it okay it is I think they're gonna make it ooh boy that's within a oh it's about an inch to go home what do you do John this is the situation we were talking about I believe you got to go well I think being that close Hipple could fall forward an inch they jammed it up the quarterback sneak they're going to take the field go I don't know they're going they're heavy-duty yeah they're bringing both teams are loading up yeah they've got everybody that they got on a roster that's over 280 in there now and both sides the big thing they've got to do is get a good snap here and if they do the quarterback sneak Hipple just if he can just get control the ball and take a little dive you ought to be able to get a half an inch from James Jones is in there and pull back and then Scott Williams in there with him but Hipple may take it [Applause] [Music] fourth edition and he looks to have gotten over the top enough for the first down he got it [Applause] so a gutsy called by Darrell Rodgers in his staff it's almost a share three forgot like any Murray and in a situation being ten down here's what they had to do well James Jones is plenty big and he also keeps the keeps the legs going as Darrell Rodgers watches that play let's check out his reaction he's been coaching a long time this is nice going guys I knew we get it Jones and Gary James [Applause] [Music] Flitz inside handoff Joan breaks one tackle in Rivera kind of trips him up but not before he fights inside the 5-yard line this was a blitz I even brought Gary fence take the safety see Gary fencing 45 you see Ron Rivera 59 they came on the Blitz and fencing almost jammed it up but it was a perfect call for the situation as Jones squirted away Ron Rivera in on the top we slowed him down a little bit but not before Jones got down to about the three and three-quarter yard line so it'll be second down now goal to go all just across the floor near the three yard closer to the floor than the three [Music] [Applause] Jones gets struggles forward maybe gets a yard and a half the bears tighten up now but you have to watch a guy like James Jones because he never stops churning some of his own linemen got in his way here and kind of slowed him down he wasn't able to gain his momentum but see his feet they just keep going in fact the costume the game Rams last week he fumbled right down with extra effort players got to keep driving and Jones does that better than anyone Mike Ditka looks on he knows he's got a the lion score here he's in the rest of this 130 you'd almost think they action but it's Williams behind Jones he battles for touchdown it's touchdown on the last second ever by Scott Williams behind the lead block by James Jones [Applause] 10 to 6 our score right now after that good effort by Scott Williams he doesn't get to score too often and he's a happy young man as they come back with the Jones as the lead blocker and he throws a key block right there kind of jams up the Bears pursuit and then Williams just takes it in dan Hampton trying to hold him back but the Lions are back in this football game Johnny only his fifth carry of the year but his second touchdown well this is indeed the black and blue division isn't it this is a this game typifies that Eddie Murray now will attempt the extra point or the Lions [Music] that's good he knows ten to seven here beside Lake Michigan a soldier filled two bears leave the Lions welcome back where the Lions have just closed this one up to ten to seven an interested spectator right here now the newest member of the Chicago Bears Doug Flutie Doug I've been going for you this week pretty good I can't complain about a day things are coming a little slow and it's it's tough getting adjusted to a new system and new atmosphere around you but I'm learning as quick as possible trying to get accustomed to playing with the Bears anything and in this system that's similar to what you played before absolutely nothing that always helps then until Anderson has the kick at about the 30-yard 20-yard line and breaks it out past the 30 to the 32 Lions on that last scouring effort of course got the touchdown from Scott Williams but 10-play Drive 77 yards you sat in the meetings I'll wait for this game surprise you the way Lions are hanging in they've played tough defense they're running a lot of the Chicago Bear defense and it's giving us trouble offensively duck were you surprised at all the hoopla but when you came in this week could you believe the press that came out to the bat really was surprised you know I'm just looking to get my foot the door and get started and all sudden they make it a big deal out of it first and ten from the Bears now from the 33 yard line that was right man in motion McMahon to throw on first down with all kinds of time it's incomplete intended for Sooey near the 40 yard line with the Lions sandwich at that time McMahon threw into a lot of traffic that time he was lucky it wasn't interception to linebacker through there Maxwell and Harrell there and had as much of a shot as anybody else did it's like you got to be glad when all this furor dies down I know and you're just another player and that'll happen I think very soon yeah it's just a matter of time until I become a part of the team and it's just gonna take its time and time will heal all wounds remains 10 yards to go for the Bears second down [Applause] [Music] [Laughter] first sack of the afternoon for the Lions he mentioned something the other day Doug that you know that you're accepted the things are going okay when they started playing practical jokes on that's true you know that you know that you're starting to be accepted and yes Walter Payton's the practical joker he'll get you he already attempted he got you know I understand you threw a little football out of practice the other day somebody brought out a little Flutie ball a little Pop Warner football and some of the guys are having some fun with it Doug I know that we speak for the rest of people around CBS and National Football League welcome to the NFL and thanks for visiting with us inside thank you for the Bears now third down 18 to go they have the ball on the 25-yard line McMahon out of the shotgun board ago starts in motion trying to find a way out of trouble being chased by Coppa the linebacker and dragged down on a fine hustle job I might go for the outside linebacker so the Lions hold on and we'll get the ball back once again as McMahon goes back and takes off and he really had the Lions at his mercy right here but he had so far to go he knew he couldn't get the first down he couldn't find a receiver and look at the speed by Cofer he ran him down from behind the Lions are going to get the ball and the Lions are putting a little bit more pressure on McMahon the pocket has not been very strong as it wasn't last week when the Bears suffered seven sacks Buford to Fantine manly back for the Lions [Music] [Applause] Bell lacy big hit by Todd Bell who's always been a hard hitter number 25 he goes to the block and puts the hit on but he hung on to the ball and Detroit maintains possession brain Walker with Johnny Morris you're looking at the Lions offensive huddle and Eric Hipple the quarterback and Johnny told us that he tried to get the ball downfield some today the Lions have what they chose about their game plan I think they're doing what they want to do while they passed on first down eight times and run ten times so that's kind of even but they had that one big play to Chadwick situation and took advantage of it they'll be looking for that again 38 yard line James Jones and the rookie Gary James are the running backs behind nipple I like football coming up hippo James for about a six yard game a couple great games coming up on Saturday besides we told you earlier there you see at the Florida State Seminoles against the Miami Hurricanes a number one rated team in the country that's it a special time on noon Saturday and then it's the Los Angeles Lakers and the Houston Rockets stage a rematch season premiere of the NBA on CBS next dr. Tommy Heinsohn that's all next Saturday [Music] Rubick the Tynan and overthrows eve just a touch Duerson defensively for the Bears while the Bears came with the Blitz that time Duerson had to cover Rubik one-on-one they brought Otis Wilson from the outside from the bear defense their 46 defense and they put the pressure on actually grew the cat a step or two on dorsen but Hipple was rushed part of the philosophy if you can rush the quarterback or harass him just a little bit your man can be beaten because he's not going to throw the ball that accurately as Ron Revere comes off the field Shaun Gayle comes in he's that the Bears Nickelback it'll be 34 for Detroit [Applause] tip spiderus untipped up it was intended for Chadwick or line to get to it after it was Tim [Applause] actually the lions are lucky it wasn't intercepted because it was Wilbur Marshall who harassed hippo and then hippo got rid of the ball and threw it into a whole bunch of traffic they're a bunch of Chicago Bears it was tipped away the Lions will be forced to punt Marshall having a big day here in blue barns except this one from the Bears he is just inside his own 20-yard line [Applause] but ER nice place hi beauties at the nine drops it recovers him right at the 10-yard line as a 47-yard next Sunday Eastern Division rivals Dallas in New York square off in the Meadowlands the Cowboys drew first blood against the Giants earlier in the season and in Herschel Walker led them past the Washington Redskins [Applause] [Music] the Giants hope Lawrence Taylor and their defense can slow down the cowboy so next Sunday the NFC East race eats up as the Cowboys battle the Giants and here was the drop punt by Lu Barnes he did recover but no return bad field position for Chicago squarely on their own 10-yard line first and ten sue Ian Payton the running backs Gentry is one of the wide receivers [Music] [Applause] Lyons playing well [Applause] [Music] [Applause] did you see the pursuit by the by the lions as soon as they saw they smell that coming there were five white jerseys over Peyton had no chance no question you don't Johnny when they're the Bears can you play now you're their super boy everybody's ready for you make any difference that they lost last week to the Vikings the Lions want to do the same thing to them actually the Lions entertain thoughts of a wild card if they could win this game they would be four and four at the halfway point that they you know pick up a little bit they have a shot at a wild card they had they own a victory over the bike [Applause] eight motion [Applause] Sooey [Applause] a short game [Applause] that's usually in that holding area right there in the middle of the offensive line it's against Chicago be an interesting decision for for the Lions they would have a third and ten situation or they could send them back and make it second and much much longer and closer to your own goal line let's see what Holdings offense number 57 penalty is declined third down and he was on the guard Tom Thayer bring up a third down situation at 9 yards to go for the first down for the Bears I'd have to agree with that selection wouldn't you give the Bears one play you get one shot right have to putt Darrell Rodgers Arizona State Michigan State [Applause] and they have a state he wouldn't work for him thirty nine four wide receivers for Chicago but there's flags down and perhaps Alliance for offsides they were jumping around that they got a little bit mixed up on the cadence McMahon has a great ability to stagger his cables and kind of confused the defense the way he in an inflection in his voice it's always been one of his assets and since they didn't make the first down I would imagine they'll take the penalty I think there's any doubt of that Darrell Rodgers walked all the way down almost of the line of scrimmage and yelled out the official who's offsides he'll find out along with us Curtis Green was jumping off tonight if they keep in number 77 slice Ferguson okay that's number 77 and Curtis green 262 and 77 that'll make it third and four now for the Bears the ball on their own 16 yard line the Lions have six defensive backs in four linemen only Jimmy Williams [Applause] [Music] third quarter or to go in motion [Applause] somebody got a running start but it didn't make any difference because McMahon was kind of rolling a little bit to the right that was a nice catch by Gentry [Applause] so the Lions had him and let him off the hook their first down Chicago ball will be spotted on the 24 yard line sue Ian Payton back in there now for Chicago 10 7 bear 55 remaining [Applause] Sooey curtis green fix the fencing [Applause] you what the Lions have done now in this third quarter they've taken the crowd out of this game so they have well what they they have accomplished what they wanted to do and that was to keep it as a close game now if I mean the Bears are a better football team but if they have kept them close if they get a couple of breaks one way or the other in the turnovers the Lions between this game so at this point Jerris has got to be satisfied that he's kept it close now hoping for the break second and six [Applause] [Music] [Applause] let's go to New York now and Brent Musburger a Wayne here are the details behind San Francisco's tying touchdown Ronnie Lott 7th interception set it up murasky on the scramble and that's his first rushing touchdown this season San Francisco 14 in Green Bay 14 back to Soldier Field Wayne Walker Thank You Brent bears with that first down now the ball is on the 37 yard line and here's that completion McMahon the Gulf galled is taking a couple of big hits this is the kind you're gonna you know you're gonna have to take your punishment and he took it Dewayne Galloway you'll hit you concentrations % and McMahon to throw again this is per page and it's dropped Jimmy Williams number 59 it must have had his spaghetti today Jimmy Williams is all over the place I wonder if he had his spaghetti this morning handed my goodbye he eat spaghetti on Saturday night he's spaghetti on Sunday morning he's been do it he puts on new shoes new socks for every game and this time he puts the hit on Walter Payton or something else he doesn't superstitious he gets a shave and a haircut on Saturdays and then pays extra so he can room by himself I thought I was superstitious but I carry them well it works for him he's been doing well second and ten [Applause] [Music] [Applause] across the 51st here in the 45-yard line of detroit an 18-yard gain great throw my McMahon quick-release sidearm yes and the key there was that there was no penetration by the by the Lions defensive line McMahon had all kinds of time already go found the hole and made the grab his 16th catch of the season that ball was actually deflected and he still made the ground the cajon man from down Louisiana way says he knows French a little bit he said this folks only spoken when they didn't want him to know what they were saying so the dude wasn't able to pick up too much intense bear this afternoon to catch a pass and the man spread it around first until now on the Lions 45-yard line thirty-six seconds remaining in the third quarter and what's more painting on a screen Williams makes the tackle I believe just short of another fair for [Applause] okay he's going to come dancing right into your living room on the little low screen which was set up the linemen got out in front you can see Tom Thayer 57 and Peyton follows his blockers he would he looks for the avenue and he found the Avenue Astaire made his kick-out block and J Hill Gomberg made a nice block and the Bears have a nice little drive going go back offside penalty on the Lions that got the bear started on this drive that's the end of the third quarter with the score 10 7 Bears leading right here at second down one to go for a first down for the Chicago Bears on the detroit 36 yard line they lead 10 to 7 paetynn ensuing backfield that was suing you'll have the first down across the 25 or rather the 35 yard line Vernon Maxwell a defensive play for Detroit it appears that the Bears have a nice drive going where they're getting their five and six and eight and ten yards are clipped when I think the Lions are going to have to do something gonna have to take a chance I think in order to stop from at least get them down to a field goal and that is some kinds of blitz and twists and something they just can't play you know a three-four and give him right down the field because the Bears have Seaton D to have gotten into a group and they own this quarter yes defense right now pasta suey Nathan gets a block and soui gets about three or four for Jimmy Williams hauls him down Mike Ditka told us and if Walter Payton is doing anything better than he did his career before the sure he's blocking he's probably blocking better this year than he ever has okay and let's take a look at Jimmy Williams he tried to grab that jersey and tried to pull there's no such thing as a tearaway Jersey anymore Jim you got to get him with your body what she did the end ahead that second plate of spaghetti might not been able to make that second effort I can't believe because I get e on a Sunday morning [Music] [Applause] [Music] we go in motion [Music] about six second sack of the afternoon for Detroit and Jimmy Williams for Detroit like Wilbur Marshall for the Lions having a good day defensively he's really coming on as you know he was a kind of a contract whole died he came in a little bit late to camp and was a slow start first couple three games but McMahon didn't fool him on that one he kept his eyes on him and brought him down the only fortunate thing for the Bears was that it was a nice easy tack twisting him down brings up a third and 13 now for the Bears sacks today the Bears had 26 going into this game and Detroit had on a 10 so there's a disparity on set [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and as Chitra and off the chantry [Applause] the offensive guard and gay still got penetration to make the plan rhythm gay came out of nowhere to make that tackle that was that little insight a little handoff and watch for number 79 William Gay he came in behind the pullers they're right in front of one poor behind the other and the play never had a chance the Bears forced a punt Wayne Fon says attaboy he got her to kick Pete Manley back for Detroit and it'll be spotted near the 15-yard line about the 13 will return to Soldier Field in Chicago after this word your local station this is CBS Sports coverage of the National Football League is sponsored by Mitsubishi Motors experience a sensation of the four line of new cars and trucks from Mitsubishi Budweiser beechwood aged for that clean crisp taste this Bud's for you and by MCI communications for the next hundred years as Jim McMahon looks on Eric Hipple and is Detroit Lions offensive mates are 87 yards away from the Bears endzone they'll have a first intent in their own 13 yard line 10 7 the Bears lead 12 19 remaining [Applause] [Music] complete the rubic that hide in and he's near first down yardage out near the 25-yard line Dave Duerson defensively for the Bears along with Ron Rivera a 12 yard pickup Rob Rubick doing very well he's been getting away from Dave Duerson couple three times today the Bears figured the Duerson 22 could be able to cover him man-on-man but he's gotten away from him a couple of times Rubick seen most of the duty because of an injury to david lewis the other tied in the fact of Jimmy Giles has only had one practice with Detroit first and ten the bars at the 25 [Applause] [Music] again on first down the truck under throws chadwick near the forty was getting some time on first down and and I think he really feels comfortable throwing on first and second down against the Bears China because their tendencies show that they're going to get single coverage most of the time right and there's a direct correlation to a four-man rush or as to when they blitz the four-man rush has just not been that effective for for Chicago today give credit to Detroit offensive line solid all day against the bear [Music] [Applause] [Music] and he'll get about four Duerson making a hit from safety James Jones found a nice little hole there but there were some the backer ups prevented him from going any farther than Sioux Dave Duerson was right in there nice and tight and the bear stopping so now we have a third and six situation key play for Detroit and when you stop to think if Murray had made that field goal early all the strategies are different [Applause] for June Oh miss Wilson great defense II play got a hand out most intercepted the linebackers are having good days both sides well he did his job he made sure they didn't complete it and the Bears are going to get the ball back oldest Wilson who really had a double celebration recently and his 29th birthday and he got engaged all in the same day that's what you call heaven good days yeah [Applause] Lu Barnes deep for the Bears [Applause] it's a high hanger Barnes has the fair kitchen at the 36 yard line 35 yard cut no return the Bears in possession when we return the first quarter it was the Bears seven Detroit nothing when Eddie Murray trotted out on the field for Detroit to attempt the 28 yard field goal and he missed it and he's in a little bit of a rut he has only made one of his last four field goals he may get another shot at it before this afternoon is out but that wisdom key play in this game is the difference in the game he's a guy that's been so successful throughout his career Johnny that a miss like that doesn't affect him because he's got confidence in his ability and knows he can come back buying the next two or three right through Calvin Thomas and Walter Payton back in [Applause] Jim McMahon first and ten and 55 remaining in the game that was Payton driving forward and again six or seven [Applause] next Sunday on CBS big Eastern Division game the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants Dallas will be there with Herschel Walker making a start and the Giants will be there with their tough defense it all starts at 12:30 Eastern Time with the NFL today both those big Sunday both those teams were 5 and 2 going into this weekend [Music] second of three Payton again that's the first down and a great block big man Curtis green he through a gray great block as you look at the Bears ball control and there's a great statistic 48 in the last 50 games they have won in time of possession today's was extremely even at halftime but the Bears have loaded up here in the second half and now have the edge at 7 yard run by Payton two carries ago was his longest of the day first and 10 now near midfield [Music] a road [Applause] [Music] as a ways to go today but he's rushed for over a hundred yards as last eight games here at Soldier Field so the only way he's going to get it today is if he breaks the big one as the Bears decided to take it right to the Lions and run right at him to accomplish two things establish a drive at the same time eat up the clock we're down to nine oh three left in the game [Applause] a second and six [Music] now the Thomson motion taken again except maybe one or two so when a game is in doubt give it to the main man and that's what the Bears are doing when you stop to consider it's just mind boggling 20,000 yards do you know what's mine pocket about that Johnny the Faculty's got 20,000 number one with a guy in second place Jim Brown is 5,000 charts behind him and it started to rain some here at Soldier Field I've been threatening all day this is the murse we've seen of it big play [Applause] Hey and has the first down I believe believe is he went on to balance and stepped right on the marker they're marking it a little bit short that time the Bears caught Demetrius Johnson came rushing to the inside and he came tried to come inside to beat that pitch and got caught inside and that's what made it even close otherwise it had Payton for a loss but now they're down to the 40-yard line and whether they're short or not you got to wonder what mics this Ditka's decision will be maintained control the ball and go for it on fourth down or put them back in their territory if I know Mike Ditka I think he'll go for depends on how its spotted it was very close on a sideline [Applause] first down I just have to face the decision we just didn't figure walking the marker there in front of him and not getting the first down [Applause] the best but there's been and the best that there's been had taken a run like this Johnny of two or three yard gain and turned it into an eight yarder you see where number 21 that was Demetrius Johnson came across the line of scrimmage took a calculated risk and hurt ball is now at the 40 yard line of Detroit 804 remaining on the climb hey you sit by James Carolyn gets a couple hey this is the kind of football that the offensive line likes to play any offensive line that's true and at the same time to keep the Detroit offense off the field as you look at some of the scores the Raiders have really found themselves after losing their first three games of the year Kansas City Tampa Bay 27 20 and what's coming up next the NFL today after the game with the postgame show a football here though before we get to that seven and a half minutes [Applause] there's Lee 210 deception second date the men's row wants a need for gold knocked away nicely defensively for Detroit Bruce McNaughton the cornerback step for step with a burner give McNaughton some credit he had to cover one of the fastest men in pro football one of the fastest men in the world there's only one faster man in the NFL that's Darrell Green defensive back for the Washington Redskins so they went for at that time and now we find the Bears in a third and long situation this is the Lions chance it's amazing how you can make a drive and go down the field boom boom boom first down first down then all of a sudden you got one player the drives dead take a chance to try to get it in the end zone Rick Norton was right there the eighth play of the drive Dennis gentry [Applause] great things out of the shotgun [Applause] Gentry in motion big pressure fumble hit by William Gaia's Alliance in the right side and the ball was loose they may call him into grass they may call him the arm going forward they call it a sack the third of the day for Detroit third of the day for the Detroit Lions as they put the pressure the pocket completely collapsed on McMahon and he was hit by two or three guys Michael Cofer came up with the ball and the detroit defense has plenty to be proud of today they have really basically overall shut down the Chicago Bear offense let's take a look at the pass rush and you can see he was trying to hit gentry over the middle and William Gay puts the pressure on to force him to go forward in the in the pocket and actually should deserve credit for the sack [Applause] today [Applause] that completes it at midfield for and there's a flag down in the back field [Applause] see that into double coverage over there we sure did looks like this will go against Detroit holding offense number 70 ten yards Keith thorny the right guard the veteran the leader of that Detroit offensive line Dorney is second from the left his number 70 and you can see him blocking on Steve McMichael there with Michael 76 coming for Danny oh boy shoulder and pulls back on him now our the first and 20 they're shredding blitz shirt drop gets it to Herman hunter and he'll get ten of those back whoa boy give him some credit boy the pressure was mounting on him when he found through sidearm and found Herman hunter who caught nine passes last week for Detroit out of the backfield and got a nice game rather than having another sack got a 12 yard gain so that'll make it second and eight now for Detroit [Applause] Herman hunter who is the Lions third-down specialist out of the backfield [Applause] [Music] very James in the running backs now for moving young no gain there so it'll be third and eight now for the Lions and this is their biggest third down play of the afternoon and we'll have to watch closely to be kind of fun to watch to see how the Bears handle this now they've got Shaun Gayle in there have five defensive backs the Lions come back with Herman hunter will they blitz will Marshall and Otis Wilson will they play off in his this is what Eric it was trying to figure out if the line is incomplete but flags are down he's going to joseon defending over here he's going to call it on one of either the receiver or the defender all that against you trying to push off on Leonard Thompson believe that's the call it's going against the offensive receiver and that's a really a tough situation for a receiver you come down the field of some offense number 39 the penalty is declined at fourth dye and some defensive back gets right in her face - and stands when you're going full speed and they call you for offensive interference it's not fair Thompson era I admire you for that job even though you played that position funny situation now Lou Barnes back deep for the bears blacks addictive lines 5:06 on the clock [Applause] black kits a beauty Barnes is back inside his ten the money here the 25-yard line it's a 47-yard punt and the Bears will start from there 25 when we return Piero's on 60 minutes you'll meet the drunk drivers best friend is a lawyer who has defended 1,500 drunk drivers and beat the rap every time then Murder She Wrote followed by a CBS television movie whose Julia that's tonight on CBS [Applause] 4:53 left in the game on their own 25 Calvin Thomas with Walter Payton throws short drop he has it to patron a long handoff is all that is [Applause] expect to see more of the same Johnny if he's going to throw it's got to be that count those kinds of passes and basically you think that this gotta keep getting into Peyton and use up the clock and try to get the first downs and move the lines off the ball well I think and there's another reason for that as to is with me and obviously he's not a hundred percent he did throw the ball down the field well on the one to Willie Gault obviously he's not he's less than a hundred percent the arm Brad's on him and and he's just trying to get through the game and get a victory uses much of the clock now as he can here's Payton inside the first [Applause] the 37 yard line Robinson finally hauling him down for Detroit this was a case of Payton seeing the crease and just putting his head down and driving and notice how he carries the bomb then he tucked it away at the last second he carries it out front and with two hands and then right before impact he has the he just has that sixth sense of when to put the ball away of course usually if someone's gonna hit you to try and put it away but some guys forget from the 37 [Music] first down baby are in short wean Galloway defensively for Detroit along with Jimmy Williams well they're giving him that short hitch five six yards deep enough I get back to the point I was making the Lions got to take a chance here somewhere you know a corner bass got to say hey three minutes left in the game we're gonna get beat I got to take a chance and go up for the interception or you know you might get beaten and lose the game but you just can't let him move the ball down yeah right you can't place it like that no you got to take a chance they might have to take the chance by their defensive column on whether it's safe people lists or even something like that second down and one was just short Calvin Thomas has he pulls across the 50 into Detroit territory [Applause] facemask 'i will go against Detroit and the Bears will be into lion territory [Applause] and we're reaching the point where daripada defense number 57 five-yard penalty [Applause] it's the first time Paul was on the inside linebacker turn on Maxwell he was trying to drag Thomas down five more yards tackle and the Lions have to be thinking about when they're going to start calling their timeouts this is a first down situation are they going to Bank on stopping the Bears this time and time outs from the 44 yard line Detroit [Music] again again inside [Applause] moving into the two-minute mark now lions would probably have to get him stopped before they use a timeout they haven't done it so they'll just let it wind down to the two-minute warning and that is where we are the pairs need a 10-7 stay with us it's not decided yet marathon held right here in Chicago last year's winner Joan Deloitte Samuelson will provide first-hand analysis which includes a world-class field of runners on them Ingrid Christensen's will attempt to break her own world record ideal weather conditions and the route goes right past Soldier Field see it all after the game coverage here on CBS right now it's still up in the air bears though do have the upper hand they lead the Detroit Lions by a score of 10 to 7 exactly two minutes remaining on the clock to be second down and five yards to go for another Chicago first down lions defensively are in a place where they have to gamble and take some chances Calvin Thomas and Walter Payton in the backfield with McMann Paul is just across the 40 yard [Music] [Applause] [Music] there's an i formation ahead extremely close to the first down if he doesn't have it earning maxwell on the defensive play the clock continued dear on down to 152 before it was stopped it's going to be very close for the first enter at this point they stop start calling timeouts figuring that they're going to have to stop them on this next set it down so the Bears the offensive line starting to root them out when they have two offensive line has not done it most of the day but now when it counts they are moving the Lions measurement here see if Payton got across and he did be a first down situation one more what do you think Johnny one more first down how to do it for the Bears yep it's a funny situation the Lions who probably should be happy that they got a mouse down there now stay with us ten seven Bears there any rebounding off loss last week the Bears seem to be in control here right now in this game but it wasn't what you call an impressive performance you're never a little flattered I think you'd have to say they're a little bit flat I think Detroit has been at an excellent football game and it's not over yet but I think what Mike Ditka has said the last few weeks is true they're just not playing football like they can play football for whatever reason distractions McMahon not being a hundred percent the Flutie situation they are not playing the like they're capable they may be in this game but it's like wine as efficient as they were playing last year right 152 remaining now all control in this half has favored the Bears they had a 19 minutes and 20 seconds compared to 844 the lines 1st and 10 the ball is on the 33 yard line the pasta paid to going left the Lions will not have to call timeout either no it was lucky for them that Paton went out of balance let's go to New York now and Brent Musburger will Wayne you reported the score and here's how it occurred life was back to pass and Ronnie Lott with his second interception of the day eighth of the season he goes 57 yards for the touchdown and the Niners are ahead of the Green Bay Packers 21 to 14 back to Wayne and Johnny thank you very much Brent Ronnie Lott eight interceptions this year would here in his first full year at free safety ten seven the eighth play of this Drive coming up or the Bears second in a Honda 31 [Applause] fifteen yard decrease Johnson by Tim right 17-yard pickup ever since Tim reitman has been in Chicago he's come up with big plays when called upon not very often as it called upon but he came up with a big one that time Devon Mitchell missed the tackle as McMahon goes to the air looking for the short man he had the deep man here here comes Devon Mitchell and reitman just goes off the tackle takes it on down the field and that just about puts the Chicago Bears in commanding position a cabdriver we had last night was right he said he liked us to see the Bears get the ball to right man because he's tough to bring down and always fix up the first down we have to go find it again we're gonna travel with us first and ten ball us on the 15 now 1:39 remaining [Music] tries to cut it back it gets nowhere [Applause] and a soda in a struggle now he Troy number two Minnesota was up by 17 to 3 in that game and now is twenty twenty fourth quarter affair damn the blow that game when the Bears have the potential of taking a two-game lead so we have a big swing that could happen here [Applause] presented by the authority of the National Football League and is intended for the private use of our audience rebroadcast or other use of this telecast without the express written consent of the Chicago Bears and the National Football League is prohibited Mike Ditka has called his entire offense over there to the sidelines and having a chat with every one of them the offensive line and McMahon and I know what he's saying hang on to that football control it does not make a mistake those eyes when you're his teammate for many years and I played against you for so many years and I'll tell you what you see is what you get I'll tell you the way it is and that's the way it is well if they blow this game who's gonna be something to pay in the locker room after this now the disposition but you can't try it's giving it all boys I mean the Bears were favored by two touchdowns got more than two touchdowns and the Lions have given them all they can handle it's been good effort on both sides of the football Ami's [Applause] [Music] lion splits gotta cross a line of scrimmage prematurely it looked flags are now it is against Detroit well they're obviously eager to get to across the line of scrimmage and throw him for a loss and do something [Applause] you have to gain the yards if you do it that way offside defense middle linebacker five-yard second down no number just middle linebacker [Applause] one time not remaining for the Lions Detroit penalty in the ball game important stat right now though is minute 29 ticks left on the clock second and five for Chicago [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Calvin Thomas bounces out it has a first down inside the five and another flag is now good strong running by the 245-pound Calvin Thomas [Applause] it's going to go against Chicago there's a lake flag for a hole holding offense number 87 10-yard second down right in [Applause] but the point here is just hang on to the ball it's not what you call a critical penalty right the Lions with one timeout left and bears only on second down so any more hit ought to be happy about one thing even Colorado and I couldn't believe Colorado beat Nebraska yesterday second at 15 and in motion have another first down Mitchell had to make the play and 11-yard gain by pink [Applause] Rogers are signaling the defense he wants to use that last timeout baton now 67 G Troy 21 over 3 when he sees that daylight boy does he take off right up dude Hillenburg with a good block up the middle Tom Thayer sealed out well number 57 and hatin goes to the 9 yard line is he getting close to that hundred yards at all in 67 67 team under way it'll be tough to make it now but for man that had only 7 yards at the half time he's doing ok he's averaged 79 yards against the Lions in his career he's approaching that and he did [Applause] [Music] there's a way the Central Division standings look that the Bears win the day there'll be seven and one Minnesota five and two and they're tied an airball game Lions will drop to three and five and in Green Bay and Tampa Bay of each one just once Gary fence except things are a little different we got somebody chasing this but if things work out for them in that game they'll have a little bit more breathing room than perhaps they thought they would well you can bet that Mike Ditka his press conferences are an adventure always an adventure he won't he won't be happy right he won't be happy he won't let him rest on their lows because they've won this football you can bet that I'm trying to think of what you come up with you come up with something good [Applause] this is a third and four [Applause] in two more times time outs left for Detroit Calvin Thomas [Applause] [Music] the Bears will let it run on down here well they have an interesting choice here they could go for a field goal with Kevin Butler but anytime you put your kicker out there and try a field goal you mean you could risk it being blocked as some guy scooping up the ball so you have to be very careful on your blocking on this situation because the Lions are going to go all-out for it as the clock winds down now if they run the ball say they ran from from fourth down situation the clock would stop because a change of possession Butler is 14 to 20 for the year now he's picked his last 11 field goals successful timeout Chicago number one now what do you think done they stem but Colin do you think they'll actually kick it I mean it really is a touchy situation okay supposing they run away and they run it for a couple of yards it goes down to 20 seconds the Lions have the ball and the they'll get a playoff right now supposing they kick it they've got the six point leading of course the problem then they would have to kick off but supposing they try the field go I'm giving you all the options no she'll go and it's blocked I'm not sure we have enough time look at this Cleveland has rallied now to take the lead over Minnesota 23 to 20 in the fourth quarter [Applause] wieszczyk the Bears could come out here today with a [Applause] I just announced that score to the crowd they reacted to it they know what I guess they're gonna go for nervous doesn't it yeah I think so I don't think there'd be any other reason to throw them out there if you were gonna fake it or anything like that just now he could take a snap 22 seconds left this will be a 27-yard field goal attempt [Music] [Applause] [Music] locking this you have to kick off now and more than likely when you do squib tickets ready ticket that locked it down there well one thing for sure the lines are going to get another play from scrimmage Ravi squib kick it so that nobody can get full head of steam and the lands above the old Bhama roof or we could see multilaterals the shades of the California stance wasn't a California Stanford that's right Khalfan to score the touchdown wasn't there but you know I live out there so I see you see it on highlights every other day out there still way be in st. Louis that week probably like you were [Music] so it looks like the Bears have wrapped it up 18 seconds left there's a final score Miami beat Indianapolis of the Colts still do not have a victory of the season but Miami was a squeaker the Dolphins are in some big trouble bears are still huddled in the 30-yard line with his kick Herman hunter and Oscar Smith back at the Detroit goal line Oscar Smith can run or if they get the ball to him he can take off you have to believe that they're gonna do some kind of a squib or so if they can't form an even blocking formation Kansas City beat Tampa Bay 2720 the [Music] and does it's a liner [Music] finally picks it up at the 6:00 a spider Wilbur Marshall was in on it yeah but your best out there when he needed but grant used to do heparin Minnesota all his starters would play on the special teams 12 seconds remaining so the Lions will get at least the snare or if the Bears put stars on their helmets he'd have so many stars you wouldn't be able to see the helmet he's been all over the place today well here we go 12 seconds to go the Lions on their own 10-yard line and over Marshall six points was the difference right great individual effort on a blitz sacked hippo created a fumble picked it up and took it 12 yards under the endzone for a bear's first score first and the Bears have won this game and played pretty well on defense without Mike's signature there's loose as you can get on defense he'll marry down to about the fifth [Applause] east of the 30 no time left on one their seventh game of the season Dave Duerson [Applause] football game is over and here was the last play as Dave Duerson as they went with the Hail Mary past three receivers down the field hoping for a break a bounce of the ball but it went to the Chicago Bears and Dave Duerson number 22 his fifth interception of the year puts it right up among the leaders and it takes it down the sidelines for a moment I thought he might get a touchdown it became a moot point out of bounds the Bears win it they're now seven and one he was thinking touchdown and the guy that came over and knocked him out of Bounce was Eric Hipple congratulations both ways between Hipple and McMahon there and McMann the fact that he came in in the second half and performed fairly well I don't think you hurt his shoulder anymore so he might have another week to to get it in better shape they now 22 straight games and they have played where he has started and they have won so obviously Jim McMahon whether it was a spectacular performance and Matt when he's there the Chicago Bears win football games 31 of their last 35 to go along with those 22 straight for Johnny Morris this is Wayne Walker saying so long from Soldier Field in Chicago the final score Chicago 13 Detroit 7 you've been watching CBS Sports coverage of the National Football League [Applause] guess what
