I think I always talk about this what people think is good or cool and I think that no one actually knows what's good or cool you know so once you throw that out the window then you could just actually make what you want and when I started making these I didn't think anyone was ever gonna see them you know and I was making them for me so that's why all the references in the paintings are things that I actually like a painting could have like a Ralph Bakshi reference who's an animator you did it you beat the demon or it could have a Wilford Lamoni as reference who was a brigade album art cover artist they're all things I like it's like nothing is done in irony or satire it's all completely sincere cuz I feel like a lot of art is while it is very serious and doesn't allow room for humor jokes it also takes itself too seriously and there's ad Reinhardt quote which is artists to seriously take seriously you know which is cool like the past two years almost exclusively listened to live reggae sound clashes from the mid 80s and I think there's a performative element to it where you can enter it it's not just like someone's talking at you you're participating so I think that comes in with my paintings too because I think about a participation of the viewer looking at the paintings it's about other people viewing these things too and I treat my paintings like TV because I feel like most painting requires so much education privilege awareness time from its audience and I think that's the part that makes are intimidating and alienating to people who don't practice it this is one painting I have it's called a love I can peel which is based off of a sure mine on track who's one of the reggae artists that I love but it's this image of a kiln with this woman that's melting like a candle and she's like a big puddle on the floor with these candles like almost like memorial candles coming out and she's in her living room filing cabinet the figure on the bottom that is taken from Mort Drucker drawing who was the illustrator for Mad Magazine everything is a reference like you know and thinking about like childhood so the newspaper that it's floating on top is from Charlotte's Web and then bring some my kind of historical element to it is the italian futurist painting i want them to kind of be almost timeless in a sense so that they span different generations and sometimes even different centuries in the same painting but there also while the references are important it's also really personally me that's how I felt at the time it's a way for me to kind of categorize everything that I'm feeling through all the things that I experience that I like in a visual way and I just kind of it's like a map or a good everything is fair game so I'm not just referencing cartoons and referencing images and referencing advertisements I'm referencing screenshots it's [ __ ] everything so I'm really excited to do something that's so important to me I'm so lucky to do which is a solo museum show in a place is actually really interesting and complex and culturally rich and it's like its own unique thing that doesn't exist anywhere else especially now with everything that's going on I think it's really relevant so I'm it's like such a crazy opportunity yeah you
