hi guys welcome back to my channel my name is julie ku your interior design expert you may or may not know that i design custom homes for a living i realize that not everyone can afford that luxury including myself so if you want to make your house look like a completely custom expensive home this video is for you [Music] if this is your first time visiting thank you for stopping by this channel is all about interior design tips helpful home hacks a feng shui design and a little bit of diy mixed in today we're going to talk about 10 easy ways to make your house look more expensive before i opened up my own interior design studio i was trained in hospitality to design so i was pretty much designing hotel resorts all over the world i helped design height international hotels langham the w mandarin oriental and a lot of boutique hotels both domestic and international so i really know a thing or two about creating the ultimate upscale experience to make your home look more expensive you want to consider all aspects of the design from the floors to the walls to the ceiling there is no surface that's left untreated you want to have a visual language from the pattern on your floors to the color of the walls and finally what's happening in the ceiling you never want to neglect the ceiling and just leave it plain old white unless that was your intention you can always tint the ceiling with a color that's a little bit lighter than the walls and then all of a sudden it draws your eye up and the design seems very intentional in that way another easy way to make a room look completely luxurious is adding wallpaper there's nothing that screams high and lux like a room that's completely wall covered from wall to wall you can choose a really beautiful neutral toned wallpaper that's just textured and when the light hits it it has like a really faint glimmer or you can choose a really bold and patterned wallpaper the visual impact of wallpaper is a bar none to paint if you've ever walked into a really beautiful hotel room and the first thing that you noticed was this beautiful textured wall that is the power of wallpaper it makes the room seem elegant sophisticated cozy and very high end if you can't afford to wallpaper an entire room try wallpapering a smaller room like a powder room or you could wallpaper a focal wall wallpapering one focal wall will surely have the impact that you're going for another surefire way to make your home look more expensive is to layer lighting once you have the general lighting in which is usually some sort of overhead lighting like recessed lighting you can then layer on more accent lighting like a really beautiful chandelier some pendant fixtures hanging down sconces that get installed on the walls and finally with a really beautiful table lamp or floor lamp the idea is to have your eye travel around the room and let it land and rest on surfaces that you intend to draw the viewer into if you had a really beautiful gallery wall if you had some picture lights that were accented on that gallery wall it'll draw a visual impact to that wall versus you not layering lighting at all and sometimes that gallery wall falls flat so it's never about more lighting just strategic lighting creating multiple seating groups also helps to make your home feel cozier i get a lot of questions on how to design seating groups and i actually have a video on four ways to maximize your living room layout i'll link it here so you guys can get caught up but the idea is to create smaller seating groups and little zones based on conversation areas that you want to design what is a seating group a seating group is characterized as anything with a chair next to it it could be a single club chair with a nice little accent table that becomes your favorite reading nook it could be two chairs that are facing each other right beside a fireplace and it's the perfect place to have a little game table it could be a larger sectional and a few accent chairs that create a living room when you create seating groups in the home it allows the user multiple ways to enjoy the space makes your home look more custom and well designed another way to make your home look more custom and high hand is to add architectural detailing like molding and trim work this includes everything from base molding to crown molding to beautiful casings around your door panel molding on the walls wainscoting chair railing anything that you can apply to the surface to give it a cosmetic facelift you can see the difference in this room before where is just four plain walls and the minute we added some really simple architectural panel molding to the walls all of a sudden there's life there's texture there's visual interest and the room just seems a lot more high-end nothing screams well like a statement art piece i love a really huge piece of modern artwork that anchors one entire space as much as i love my little sentimental gallery walls visually one large statement art piece just screams expensive moving on to the bedroom you absolutely need to get rid of those colored sheets tell me when's the last time that you walked into a really beautiful hotel suite and you saw like colored sheets on the bed they're usually always white crisp clean white light and bright once you remove those color sheets next you need to layer your bedding you'll start with the sheets and then a blanket and a really beautiful duvet up top you can also throw in an accent pillow in the color of your choice but typically you would leave your sheets light bright and devoid of any saturated color the next tip is to upgrade your hardware typical builder grade hardware always comes in like a brushed nickel or brushed aluminum or stainless steel if that was your intent that would be great however hardware like that usually looks like you got it from some box hardware store down the street the easiest way to make it look more expensive is to remove all your hardware and give it a really beautiful spray coat of black matte paint you can buy a can for less than five dollars at the hardware store and in one afternoon completely update the look of your entire kitchen another key tip in making your home look more expensive is to use symmetry and furniture placements like you see behind me i don't only have one table lamp to anchor the space i have two so it's symmetrical and it feels more balanced you want to use a principle of symmetry to ground the space and to create balance if you have an accent chair on one side try filling up the opposite side with another accent chair they don't need to be identical they just need to be similar enough so it feels balanced just like in the bedroom one night stand doesn't have the visual impact that two night stands do that balance will help draw your eye toward the focal point of the room therefore making it look well designed window treatments don't have to be expensive but you absolutely need to ditch those builder grade blinds if you're looking at your window right now there's something plastic hanging from it you need to tear that sucker down immediately nothing makes your home look more cheap than plastic or vinyl hanging from the ceilings you can replace that with really soft window coverings maybe like a really beautiful sheer curtain followed by blackout drapery that gets layered in front of it you'll be hitting two birds with one stone first it'll make your window treatments more functional you'll have the semi-privacy you need from the sheer curtains while still allowing the light in and you'll have the blackout option for full privacy or you want to darken up the room while watching tv again they don't need to be expensive my favorite sheer curtains are from ikea and they cost less than ten dollars a panel in order to make your home look more custom and high-end you need to ditch everything that's builder grade while you're at it the key to that coveted custom look is with detailed interpretations of really simple installs instead of a three inch backsplash in the bathroom try installing tile from the vanity all the way up the walls instead of generic stainless steel hardware in the kitchen try spray painting them a modern matte black for a designer finish remember that it doesn't take a whole lot of money to fool the eye into thinking that your home looks custom designed and more expensive than it really is you just need some creativity a pair of fresh eyes and some of my tips from this video to get you
