[Music] welcome back to diy with kb if you're new here my name is kiva and i teach people how to achieve the luxe look for less in today's video i'm giving you 10 home decor items that are super duper cheap but make your house look super expensive before we get in today's video please remember to subscribe like this video and check me out on instagram and if you want me to design your home click the link in my description box for our virtual design sessions now let's save some money my number one favorite cheap home decor decorative accent is moss when you look at restoration hardware our house creighton barrel ethan allen all of the luxury stores you always see moss as a staple in their decor and moss is super duper affordable not only could you in theory go outside and get it but you know you gotta worry about the little buggies there but you can get it at the dollar tree at joann pretty much anywhere my actual favorite place to get moss is the dollar tree and at the dollar tree they sell spanish moss reindeer moss moss sheets and also moss rocks so you can get that really nice luxe look for absolutely no money i mean you literally get it for a dollar stores like restoration hardware sell moss for like fifty dollars i'm like excuse me if you got it outside for free and then you put it in a plastic container that costs two cents why is this fifty dollars people tend to use moss and vessels because vessels are in people like decorative bowls decorative vases but what do you fill them with you fill them with moss it adds a really nice green touch to kind of break up the monotony of your color scheme especially if you're doing modern luxury design now some people put them in decorative bowls some people put them on trays you can put them in troughs like those really big wooden troughs and you can also put them on your faux plants and that's one of my favorite ways to actually use moss tons of us by faux plants i know some of you are like get a real tree i'm there with you but sometimes it's just not feasible some people just don't have the green thumb so what you can do is get some of that moss and line your faux plants with it and it you know makes them look more real because instead of having to look at those fake rocks or you know just like the plastics that they put the fake tree in you can put moss on top of it and give it some liveliness it adds more green and it just takes your design to the next level because it looks like you're incorporating real greenery into your design so you really can't go wrong either way so moss is the first way to use really cheap and affordable home decor to elevate your space and it's not going to cost you any money the second item that is super affordable but also looks super luxe is the concrete planter now concrete and cement planters are really really popular in modern design industrial design bohemian design mid-century design it's one of those things that kind of you know goes across the board cement and concrete are definitely in so concrete planters are really really affordable now if you're looking on those luxury websites they certainly are not but why get a concrete planter called a concrete bowl or a concrete vase where they're going to up charge you hundreds of dollars where you could actually just look for a concrete planter at home goods at home the garden section of home goods the garden section of target and get that same thing that's selling for 500 for twenty dollars so we can get that concrete look we just have to look in a different part of a store just because something is marketed as one thing doesn't mean that we cannot repurpose it i'm so concrete planters are an amazing way to go and you can get concrete planters that are white that you can have dyed concrete you can have dyed cement um but this really gets that really nice luxe earthy look super affordably just change which part of the store you're shopping in and you're going to achieve that luxe look for less item number three that is super affordable but helps your room look luxe is the task lamp i know you guys i go on and on about the task lamps but there's a good reason for that task lamps really frame out the space look right behind me i have task lamps it really lets you know that you're in my living room this is a place where you sit down you read you have a conversation and helps it feel homey it ties in all of my colors but you can get dupes of these on amazon on wayfair on all modern at target sometimes they have these task lights absolutely everywhere and they really just frame out a space now at other stores these lights are going for five hundred dollars six hundred dollars some of them are even one thousand dollars but that's not what we're dealing with these ones behind me were 65 dollars and a really good resource for task lighting is actually ikea if you've been with me for a while i had those upper league task lamps and they're phenomenal they're not marketed as task lamps i think ikea just calls them floor lamps but they are short enough where they were able to go over my sofas and again really frame out the space a task light is really perfect for an open floor plan because it is so hard to divide the space so we're able to do it with lighting in a really affordable way instead of having to spend money on putting up a wall or getting a big media console or a sofa console to really separate the space we're doing really affordable modifications that get us to the same goal instead of throwing a lot of money at things at the end of the day aren't really worth an investment to us the next affordable home decor item that is going to make your home look luxurious is the wool blanket keva why wool wool is hot it is scratchy okay all of those things may be true but i'm talking about the wool blanket because it's really nice and thick wool blankets add a ton a ton of texture to a space and texture is something we want it's not just about the dog's comfort or having really something nice to snuggle up against to it's about adding dimension to the space we never want a space to look completely flat that is what distinguishes basic design from luxury design and that's why you're here on this channel so having different textures and different colors and having something really interesting and really well thought out is exactly what you want in your design so that wool blanket is going to add that dimension because you're going to have a fun texture maybe you'll have a new pattern and it's going to be a really nice contrast against your other furniture and these wool blankets you can get really affordably my favorite place to get these blankets is actually ikea you guys know i'm an ikea super fan and i have a good reason they have some really nice wool blankets they're very nice and thick and they add that texture that you're craving and they're not super expensive you're going to be spending probably under 40 dollars for something like this and you only need one or two i'm not saying that you need to replace all of your throws with a wool blanket add that will blanket to the collection of the other throws you have and it's going to make a huge difference we just want to add more dimension that is one of the main things that distinguishes luxury design for just basic design it's not about throwing away all of your furniture it's about furniture it's about layering things making things more complex and the wool blanket is the perfect affordable way to do so if you don't want to go to ikea they always have them in the thrift store it's okay to buy second hand i buy it all the time just throw it in the washing machine get it clean and it is brand brand new the next home decor item that is super inexpensive but looks super luxurious or can be made to look super luxurious is the billy bookcase so the billy bookcase is an ikea signature everybody loves them they use them for those built-in hacks they use them for absolutely everything and i love them now i don't necessarily love them as is because they're super boring at the end of the day it's just like a frame with a bookshelf but they are really really easy to upcycle i'm always talking about ikea because the furniture is upcyclable right you're paying a really small fee at the beginning you're paying a hundred dollars two hundred dollars and you're able to tailor it to your space so you're not spending two thousand dollars on a cabinet like you would in another store you're only spending two hundred dollars yes you have to do some work but that effort that you're going to put in is going to you know in the grand scheme of things be less than the amount of money that you would you know be charged to get something super expensive so these are a few of my favorite billy bookcase hacks in this example they actually put wallpaper behind it this is really good if you're into art deco or eclectic design or you have a modern home and you really want just like a pop of something cool in there that's something that i would do here this is another billy bookcase design and this is what um lone fox home did he is incredible he's one of my favorite diyers and he actually added some cane to the front of it so this is really good for a bohemian home a modern bohemian home a home that is really big on earthy neutrals these cane bookcases at other places are at least fifteen hundred dollars and that's a lot of money sure cane can be a little bit of a little bit pricey but the billy bookcase plus the cost of the cane is still probably going to be under 500 which again relative to 1500 is a steal so i want you to get those home decor pieces that get good ratings you've seen other people upcycle them like this billy bookcase and do something custom with them again a part of having a luxurious home is also having things that other people don't have we don't necessarily want it to be a copy paste we want it to be sophisticated we wanted it to be novel so when we're diying something when we're up cycling something we're getting something custom it is an amazing amazing discussion piece and also you should just be proud of yourself because you made something pretty much out of nothing because they just gave you a packet of screws a really confusing manual and some cork board the next item that is super inexpensive but looks super luxurious when upcycled is the mom dresser from ikea i know i'm talking about a key a lot today but they are a really good resource so bear with me so the mom is the ikea signature dresser the six drawer dresser i believe is a hundred and seventy nine dollars tell me where you can get a more affordable dresser this dresser you guys i have um you know put 500 pounds of tile on it i've thrown things at it i don't know why it's throwing stuff i've thrown things at it it's been you know through the ringer we've like shoved it through the hallway this is the most durable dresser i've ever seen in my life and it's only 179 this is a little upcycle that i did actually in one of my youtube videos and i think it looked really great what we did is we actually just took some gold contact paper and kind of put it in the open space above the drawers on each level of the mom and it looked like we had maybe some gold detailing or some brass detailing in there and it was made to look kind of like the bezier dresser from restoration hardware which again is i believe upwards of three thousand dollars and we were able to do this for the 170 dollar 179 mom cost plus i think 10 contact paper from amazon this is another example of that this person did it and they took way better pictures than i did so she did it here and i think it really looks incredible it just adds again a metal tone it makes it a little bit more interesting you took something that was super basic and you just upcycled it a little bit i did it with the white she did it with the white wig you could also do this with a black brown mom as well something else you can do with the mom is add some hardware again ikea ad sells tons of hardware adding hardware to this just takes it to the next level and again that hardware is really inexpensive relative to the cost of a luxury dresser so this is yet another furniture item that is really inexpensive and with fairly minimal effort it can be made to look really luxurious and you don't have to worry about blowing your budget interior design can be so inaccessible but that does not mean that you are not deserving of a beautiful home you are so take these items spend a little bit of time upcycling them and it's going to look absolutely incredible the sixth item that is super inexpensive but looks super luxe is actually dishware from the dollar tree um and it's not just the dollar tree it's also ikea and target and even walmart honestly so dishware is somewhere uh somewhat of a controversial topic some people are like i need to have the linux i need to have this i need to have that i'll be honest at the end of the day most people cannot tell the difference if you can get those luxury brands you know on sale definitely do that i'm sure the quality is better but honestly i have seen lots of stuff in the dollar tree that looks super duper luxe my grandma is actually like a collector of really elegant dishware and sometimes i have my dollar tree cups in there and she can't tell the difference she's like oh i collected this no you didn't i spent a dollar on it um so i fooled you um but you can get really affordable dishware from there there's actually this phenomenal video i'll cut it in here where rebecca robeson and do it on a dime went to the dollar tree and she created a lux like dinnerscape tablescape totally using dollar tree items so rebecca robison quite literally the best interior designer on the planet can do it that means that you can do it as well their stuff is so affordable dollar tree target walmart they all get a bad rep for being um you know cheap but cheap is not always the right word maybe let's just do affordable what's wrong with saving money why wouldn't you save money if it looks exactly the same just look for the glass try to look for things for things that have very minimal patterns and i think that you are good to go the next home decor item that is super affordable but looks super luxe is the diffuser so diffusers are in i don't know i don't know if people are over candles now i don't really know what the situation is i still really like candles but people love diffusers you're able to diffuse essential oils and get something a little bit cleaner in your air that's kind of what i'm understanding about the diffuser craze and they look really cute um and you can get them for just about anywhere obviously everyone loves the truvia um diffuser it looks really nice but it is fairly expensive so dollar tree styles diffusers target sales diffusers walmart cell diffuser if you're not picking up on my theme here you should be all of these stores that are really inexpensive and have some good quality things you can get those things from there and then just spray paint them the first diffuser i ever got i actually got it on clearance at bed bath and beyond it was originally like ninety dollars and it was on clearance for like eight dollars because it was like rainbow and nobody wanted a rainbow diffuser because i don't think that's very relaxing i took it home i got some black spray paint which is like three dollars and most of us just have it sitting around i spray painted it and that was it i put a poly acrylic finish on it um and that was it i wasn't diffusing you know the paint fumes it was totally fine because it was completely separate from the actual canister that the oils got went in and i got that luxe look for less so get the diffuser from the dollar tree stuff like that it doesn't always have to be about that diffuser or that item being the most functional thing when you're spending a dollar on it no it doesn't it's not going to give you that hotel smell but we're talking about the aesthetic so when you're ready to invest in a really good diffuser you know for the sense and stuff like that do that but there are more affordable ways to do it if it's just about aesthetic for you i think we need to break the stigma that interior design has to all be about like your lifestyle and like how you are as a person and be like a true reflection of like your innate feelings about the world that's just not realistic some people just want their house to look nice so everything doesn't have to be the you know highest quality and also look the most aesthetically pleasing sometimes our that just isn't in our budget so a lot to get something that's aesthetically pleasing or get something that we can upcycle really affordably and then when we are able to invest in the things that matter to us then we're going to go ahead and do it the next home decor item that is super inexpensive but makes your house look super luxurious is the box yes the box i said box the box and i don't mean that home depot packing box or that lowe's packing box so don't book it there i don't want that for you we don't need that um what i'm talking about is just a really simple decorative box they sell them at ikea they sell them at joann they even sell them at tj maxx and home goods and it can even be those hideous decorative boxes that have like a princess all over them where you're gonna spray paint them upcycle them and then we're going to put them on our bookshelves everyone loves styling their bookshelves and at the end of the day we just don't have enough stuff to go on those bookshelves you know when you look in restoration hardware and those luxury homes they have like 500 books on the bookshelf i just don't read that many books books are expensive i read the books that i read and i have a lot of them on the kindle now that's just kind of how i read my stuff so i don't want you to buy stuff for no reason you don't need to be spending all of your money on 100 coffee table books just to fill up a bookshelf get these boxes and use them as decorations some of them actually look like books and some of them are just boxes it's okay to have decorative boxes right sometimes we need boxes to put clutter in that's one of the main critiques of interior design people are like well how do i actually live in that space that's where we have boxes i have catch-all boxes believe me i do i have boxes that have um computer chargers in here from 1999 and my old motorola razor and then um some face wash than i ever finished once everyone has that we're human beings we have mess so incorporating these boxes into your design gives you a catch-all place and they look really nice and sleek they're adding clean lines and they're adding something new we don't all have the most aesthetically pleasing books so maybe if we get all white boxes that have like a black trim or something like that it's going to create some uniformity and rhythm throughout our design without us having to invest in tons of things we can't afford my favorite box is actually the tejana box from ikea it's made really well it stays up straight and it comes in a white if you're willing to spoil this a little bit more ikea actually has a black box with i believe like a silver or chrome trim that also looks super look super duper luxe and if you're working with a really low budget the dollar tree does have boxes you're gonna have to give them a good sand or spray paint or fill them up really well so that they stay sturdy but again it's only a dollar and we all have junk anyway so let's just use it for that the last home decor item that is super affordable but looks super expensive is the tray but i'm talking about those really nice decorative trays the ones made of metal and wood the ones that have a lot of texture the ones that have really interesting designs on them those are the ones that i'm talking about okay well trays can get expensive my go-to places for trays are is of course home goods home goods always has amazing trays they always have black trays and white marble trays and they normally sell them for around 25 these trays online go upwards of 200 so you guys all know about home goods but home goods is the place to be for this one of my tricks actually is to get trays from the kitchen section this again is all about shopping in a different part of the store when you go to the kitchen section they have a lot of those wooden trays and wooden trays are in because vintage is in that modern bohemian style is in where you have those layered trays in the background you get them from the kitchen section and they're way more affordable they're twelve dollars fourteen dollars eighteen dollars you get a few of them you layer them and you can call it a day they also sell them in ikea super affordable as well and what you can do if you don't like the color get a really nice like 120 grit like sanding block sand it down and then restain it they still stain at the dollar tree at ikea and you can make it work with your color scheme if you don't want to do the layering of trays in the kitchen again you can always add a tray to your coffee table or to the end of the bed when you add a tray to the end of the bed you're able to have home decor on the bed but you can also take it off really easily because we love to make the bed look luxurious but at the end of the day we don't want to pick up a ton of stuff we just want to get in the bed and go to sleep um they're also really good on the coffee table because we like our coffee table to look nice but sometimes it's game night right we need to play you know monopoly and we got to just like win right and we want all that clutter all the way we can pick up all the home decor on the tray move it somewhere else and we don't have to worry about remembering how we styled our surface it's all still intact we just place it somewhere else the opportunities that come with trays are limitless and again it's just really going to elevate your design okay guys that's it for today's video i give you 10 home decor and furniture items that are super affordable but look super expensive i'm here to always prove to you that you can
