I love watching her videos because she gets me to focus on the nuances of the incredible singing that's going on, and gets me to notice song structure a bit more. And her enthusiasm is infectious.

I love her presence and takes, but the way she keeps rewinding the videos over and over again drives me nutty.

welcome back to the charismatic Voice through this Channel and your suggestions I've discovered Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush and I even remarked on some of the similarities between them which prompted many of you to recommend a collaboration they made mind blown that is so cool thank you for the suggestion I am very excited to hear what they sound like together so let's get to it thank you foreign [Music] [Music] I was taught to fight or to win I never thought I could fail now fight left or so it seems I am a man whose dreams have all deserted I've changed my face I've changed my name but no one wants you when you lose laughs his voice is like a huge hug the whole time I love the clarity of it I love the ability he has to tell a story it's so good at delivering lyrics and I also love there's such a beautiful balance in the tone that is like a little airiness some depth as well all the while I think over everything maintaining that Clarity and storytelling aspect it's just a really well refined instrument with that purpose especially in mind uh I also am really loving the lulling feeling of this yudhasika it has a one two three four five six kind of feeling going underneath that time signature is going to be an eight on the bottom meaning that it's got a subdivision essentially of three the whole time um that lulling I'm kind of curious why they chose this time signature in particular I have a few thoughts on why um but usually if you're going to choose a time signature that isn't a standard four four there's an impetus behind that I'm going to listen to it a little more and try and get into the song and then maybe we can go back and forth in comments about what that impetus might be back to the beginning [Music] foreign [Music] to be fair I I do feel like with a loved one or partner that there's not such a thing as too long it's just so really wonderful in times of despair [Music] foreign land we grew up strong we were wanted all along I was taught to fight or to win I never thought I could fail I love that little tiny slide off of fail that he does that not only do the lyrics communicate taught uh that he never thought I could fail the the lyrics communicate this idea of things not going well but the way that the voices aside at the end that also uh lets us have the falling feeling that failing often gets [Music] [Music] I've changed my face I've changed my name but no one wants you you lose man oh I'm I'm thinking a little more about the storyline here I know that he composed this about Depression era America essentially um and things were just really really hard extremely tough and uh I mean I think about like so many of the pictures from that time are just people that look completely desolate so I can I think that these words capture that feeling extremely well I've changed my face to change my name but no one wants you when you lose that feeling of loss inside and the loss again and again and again I could see how that would just destroy a person inside and his tenderness and his voice while telling the story is it's just such a beautiful combination okay back just a little bit [Music] [Music] don't give up I know you can't make it good though I saw it all around oh this is really beautiful and touching I love the support that she's showing I guess I think that they're intended to be a couple with her supporting him essentially oh foreign it's so fascinating how the line don't give up it goes up essentially in Pitch which often is showing more hope and his lines often felt like they were going down which I think is just um really good melodic writing for the feelings of these two characters and I love the way that she has so much tenderness in her sound as well to the point of it almost sounds like she's crying for him um the vibrato I think that's where it's really coming in where it's just got that beautiful human quality is in her vibrato there's even like a little tiny break that she allowed into the voice at one point that was incredibly touching okay I'll I'll get to all of these moments here [Music] so that I brought on up that she continues to spin I love love that and I love the expression of it [Music] someone can at the top the vocal folds actually stop that continuous vibration um it sung so gently on the edge of the air so that it allows like maybe a often when people have an overwhelming amount of emotion that is communicated from your emotional processing area in your brain through the vagus nerve to the vocal folds and that can create a sort of like a little Tremor or can create a little break in the sound and here it just sounds like the motion becomes so much that the voice stops for a little bit even though the air is still continuing I know you can't make it good [Music] it is [Music] he's just got an amazing instrument it it almost reminds me of Sinatra in the way that it maintains the focus all the time that Clarity all the time and there's um so much continuity in his sound as well when he gets loud or when he gets soft he isn't leaving the same focal point in his resonance so it's always always speaking to us and never dropping off I'm going to go back again it's just beautiful the description as well [Music] a couple little expression things in here oh it's just so tasteful [Music] so unbroke I love the way he uses the K there if I was singing a K in a big opera house I would really explode that chaotic and have a lot more sound a lot more air puffing through but when you're close to a microphone if you do that you can get a pop or it can just feel not intimate enough and it sounds like he's much closer to the microphone than what would call for a really explosive K so instead he just does this little tiny it's like a little tiny okay barely barely connecting the back of the tongue up [Music] that little broke it's so it's so sensitive and keeps that feeling of intimacy very present I saw the Earth the trees had burned down to the and down is got a really nice subtle inflection [Music] has that same inflection it's like just comes in just a tiny bit like a tiny tiny smidge below [Music] don't give up you're so hard [Music] [Music] hello it's so sweet like my eyes are watering because it's so sweet oh man I think finding an amazing partner that supports like this through the tough times is so wonderful and I have to shout out to Kirk who many of you know um my partner in all things oh my gosh the support for each other through through surgery brain surgery through pregnancy it's just uh it's amazing and he and I are both together on this channel working on things with the Channel full time it's amazing amazing amazing to have a partner that is so supportive like this and this song hits me in the heart really hard because I feel like it captures that support so beautifully okay I know I'm sappy I love the lightness of her voice too you worry too much gonna be all right [Music] I love that please and the side with it I like the way we got some piano back in there too that feels like a little more bluesy solely it's like she's got that uh optimistic soul in the relationship right now I like the way we built it in here too it's got him It's gotta that's that fun slightly Progressive Vibe happening oh oh I'm gonna go back I I wasn't expecting this to take a little turn in the section and bringing in this uh yeah this different feel here that lightness is so perfect for that moment you worry too much that you better it's a really quick slide up I like the way it's sung with a smile you can hear she really had Comfort planned and and bringing a smile into the sound lets other people feel that smell too and can hopefully pass it along a little bit you worry too much gonna be all right when times [Music] are you thinking they have this thing in common at some a balance of the sound hers is obviously it sits really high and a lot of lightness but when she goes into that middle area she brings in more body and thickness into the sound that's really nice she's able to really merge different registers beautifully but both of them have this gorgeous clarity gorgeous gorgeous Clarity easy to understand all of the lyrics and at the same time they also have a nice airiness that they're able to employ give a little cushion essentially to the sound and then they're able to weave back and forth between a sound that has more weight more thickness essentially in the vocal folds to create additional weight versus a little more lightness to the sound [Music] one more time please don't give up like if I were to draw that it would go up and then it goes down again and then there's like a little sine wave so good [Music] falls down below whatever may come [Music] that rivers flow there was one particular moment in here which I feel like is a prime example of how one should use registration flips to be expressive it's so gorgeous he flips from a very full sound of a full voice engagement up to his falsetto and it is gorgeous oh that was everything [Music] all right it's essentially a small yodel that he's doing yodeling is just often quick very rapid register shifts man it's so beautiful and expressive and it gives me chills [Music] oh okay let's talk about this uh six eight time signature now one two three four five six it keeps happening so I was thinking usually there's movement that's often indicated by that kind of time signature sometimes it's Galloping sometimes it's uh boats on the water or rolling there it can be lullabies too because again lowly there's lots of um things that can be indicated by uh six eight times signature or just a time signature that has an eight on the bottom often you're going to have that three subdivision and we get a feeling of more movement going through I think this might be the feeling of like comfort and a hug um rocking back and forth I think that they're showing that in the music video so that's a high likelihood he also is talking about the rivers flowing here so maybe we're talking about letting things go and letting them flow out so it could be letting life move past there's a bunch of different ways you could view it but I do think that it was a very intentional choice to use this time signature you should definitely sound off in live chat to Premiere with me if you're there let's talk about what else you think this time signature might indicate [Music] many men so many men no one needs don't give up cause you have friends [Music] don't give up you're not the only one [Music] don't give up no reason to be a shield you don't give up you still have us ah hi I'm I just feel really touched by this it's so sweet and so amazing seeing that kind of partnership and knowing that kind of partnership um I also want to Echo a thing that she says that you still have friends I think that friends are so important and if you're going through a really tough time it's really important to share that with your friends and allow them to support you um I know you guys have heard me talk on this channel a lot about mental health and finding support um there's all kinds of other support to help you through tough times um there's a hotline you can call uh better help is a really good resource for online counseling that there's just a lot of really great ways that you can be supported through tough times and sometimes it's just opening up to friends so I think it's so beautiful it's so so beautiful ah I feel very touched and excited that this is such a beautiful song about supporting each other [Music] [Music] [Music] I love the way that phrasing on that one shifted a little bit foreign [Music] just I have to say going up higher uh on up each time she goes up to it having that lightness in the voice is so perfect in the expression a lot of times it's easier to get heavier when you go up higher so letting it go up lightly and then letting that every time just a little tiny bit of vibrato just let it kind of um flicker a little bit be that little extra beat of hope it's so beautiful how over and over she gives it the perfect amount of weight and expression and tenderness I love the way she sings that [Music] don't kill us [Music] there's a place where we belong [Music] s foreign oh my gosh this transition and looking at the time we have left too it's so cool it gets a little more funky and I like the way we've zoomed out it feels like maybe they have found a place where they're belonging I just it's got a funky Groove I like the feeling of Journey we've had throughout the song too um even though you know we've essentially just had them turn around a bunch and be in a same place but the the feeling of the day tonight and day to night I see the colors behind it it's given us a without hardly any movement it's given us a vast feeling of Journey such an expressive person [Music] become a lot less sustained [Music] what a fascinating to me foreign such a fascinating ending I liked the way that it gave me the Sensation that we were continuing the journey that we had maybe a little more pep in our step I think it did that through having things that had a little more spring in the sound things that weren't just sustained as much but instead had um a more quick attack and Decay and Additionally you had like a group kind of coming in almost like a soul-backing kind of way seeing don't give up as well it really felt like we'd chosen to go on and that things were gonna get better I love that Progressive nature of this the way I feel like I've moved into a new place by the end of the song it's so cool if you would like to see some more analysis of both of these singers you can check out this playlist over here and may you fall more in love with music every day foreign
