Deployed dad meets his baby daughter for the 1st time on 'GMA' l GMA

we have one very special mom with us who doesn't know why she's here so where is Cassie hey Cassie how you doing good are you it so Cassie why do you think you're here this morning my brother and his girlfriend won a contest oh they won a contest yeah well you know what that's actually not really why you're here yeah well well there's more there is more because your friends and your family they reached out to tell us what an amazing mom you are raising your daughter Savannah Belle who's sitting there on your lap and you've been raising there for the past year so by yourself because your husband has been in Iraq and we're gonna take a look at your story right now sergeant Josh Sarbu and his wife Cassie seemed to always be on their honeymoon but one year ago duty called and life's chains for the young couple Josh a medevac crew chief for the Connecticut Army National Guard was sent on a one-year deployment to Iraq Cassie six months pregnant with their first child was without her husband it's definitely tough to not know what day to day and not really be able to understand where he is or what he's doing she was alone I mean it was definitely hard on her alone for her last trimester and then for the birth of their new baby girl savanah friends and family were there instead the moment that she came out and they did the skin-to-skin it was beautiful Cassie put Josh's picture all over her bassinet in the hospital because she wanted everyone to know what the father was and she wanted Savannah to see him just even if you know she was just born but still but new motherhood by herself make a/c stronger she made sure to jump right into it and devote everything to Savannah then a medical crisis when Savannah was four months old Savannah couldn't really open her eyes she was crying constantly in pain for a new mother like that you don't know how to process that her skin was red and raw her eyes were swollen shut I think that hit her the most with Josh not being there but Savannah fully recovered she just didn't let it break her and everyday working to keep their daughter connected to Josh while he thousands of miles away they FaceTime often hi honey how are you she even plays tapes of Josh's voice when Savannah cries to soothe her and she even stops crying I love her and I'm so proud of her she's an amazing mom Cassie's loved ones want her to know how special she is and this Mother's Day how her mothering of Savannah has touched them we're here for her and I couldn't be prouder she's such a strong and independent mom just everything she's been through everything that she you know in her whole life leading up to this it's just wonderful I'm getting emotional you're also making me first I'm so proud to see her grow into such a wonderful mom Cassie why did you come up with babies of venom in your mom Eileen you said come on come on up and join me now I know that's a big surprise for you yeah can you believe all these people are in on them no I totally believe them but this is this your first Mother's Day yeah and we wanted to surprise you with something we know your husband not home yet but we do have him via Skype so come on over here with me we have your husband Josh via Skype and hello Josh right now josh is on a military base in Texas right now but he wanted to talk to you Josh I want to ask you first you're coming home in the next few days so how excited are you to see your wife and to meet your baby girl for the first time you know what it's gonna be incredible it's been a long time coming I can't say nothing more than the best for I love you so much honey thank you for everything you do thank you for taking care of the baby you know what can we move the wall [Applause] [Applause] Oh [Applause] you know way I gotta say [Applause] so you you stand next to your husband yeah joke so how did how did it feel to see your wife Josh and to come on sit on the couch how does it feel to see your wife and to meet your baby girl for the first time I can't even well you know the I know you to work with FaceTime and and you would let her listen to Josh's voice so she is so calming you're in your arms right now and Cassie for you how did you feel with this big surprise for you you thought he was coming home a little bit later than that you don't mean Monday so I wasn't expecting but can you believe we pulled this right off because you've been back J bouncing off the walls yeah I'm so thankful everything worked out everyone came together Mike Thank You Josh I can tell you the father poor get used to that buddy how was it for you to see them finally reunited with your granddaughter it's amazing because like we said he wasn't there for the birth mm-hmm I was but you don't have to go away again Dorie it was very interesting compared to years ago when I had kids that you couldn't see anyone for them to be able to least FaceTime call the Savannah when Savannah was very sick in the hospital the only way to calm her down was the video of his voice Wow yeah Wow and Cassy for you your first Mother's Day how was it for you now you're gonna spend it with your family it's gonna be even better now yeah I thought I'd get it's been a while [Applause] I just have to say this it's really amazing to to bring you guys together a little earlier than you expect it right before Mother's Day and you are you really are an incredible mother to inspiration to a lot of young mothers out there and I do want to thank all the mother than our audience at work for what you guys have done and thank my mom as well and it guys say gosh thank you for your service thank you very much thank you and we hope you guys have the best reunion and mother's day ever and thank you for letting us bring you together on GMA
