KILLED AND HOSTAGES TAKEN BY HAMAS MILITANTS DURING THE OCTOBER 7th ATTACK. >>> PROTESTERS GATHERING ON THE UCLA CAMPUS. WE HAVE LIVE TEAM COVERAGE IN PLACE. NBC 4'S JOHN CADIZ KLEMACK IS LIVE WITH THOSE NEW PROTESTS, WHILE MICHELLE VALLES CATCHES UP WITH STUDENTS RETURNING TO CAMPUS. >> Reporter: MICHAEL, THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A DAY OF NORMALCY FOR STUDENTS TO COME BACK TO SCHOOL. IT HAS NOT BEEN A DAY LIKE THAT SO FAR. WE'VE SEEN A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT PROTESTS POP UP INCLUDING SIT-INS IN DIFFERENT AND RANDOM BUILDINGS ON CAMPUS, THE LATEST HAPPENING AT DODD HALL. >> [ CROWD CHANTING ]. >> Reporter: INSIDE, WE SAW AND HEARD STUDENTS CHANTING, BANGING DRUMS, CALLING FOR UCLA TO DIVEST IN ANY CONNECTION TO ISRAEL. A SIMILAR SCENE AT MOORE HALL THIS MORNING ACROSS CAMPUS, ALTHOUGH HANDLED MUCH DIFFERENTLY BY CAMPUS POLICE. THIS MORNING WE SAW OFFICERS IN TACTICAL GEAR RUSHING GOAT TO THAT BUILDING AND SETTING UP BARRICADES. STUDENTS AND FACULTY WERE SUPPOSED TO MEET THERE FOR A SIT-IN THIS MORNING, BUT WITHIN AN HOUR, IT APPEARED TO BE DISSOLVED. THE CAMPUS SENDING OUT AN ALERT MOORE HALL WOULD REMAIN CLOSED TODAY AND PROFESSORS TOLD TO KEEP CLASSES ONLINE. INSIDE A PARKING STRUCTURE, PARKING STRUCTURE NUMBER TWO ON CAMPUS, SOME 43 FACULTY AND STUDENTS DETAINED THIS MORNING T. CLAIM WAS THE GROUP GATHERED BEFORE 6:00 A.M. CURFEW ENDED AND THAT THEY WERE INTERFERING WITH A POLICE INVESTIGATION. IT'S UNCLEAR IF THE GROUP HAD BEEN PLANNING TO JOIN THOSE SIT-INS TODAY, BUT A VOCAL POLITICAL SCIENCE PROFESSOR ON CAMPUS CAME TO US TO SAY HE DIDN'T BELIEVE IT WAS RIGHT TO DETAIN THEM FOR ANYTHING. >> WE THINK THAT THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE HERE ALSO BECAUSE THEY ARE STUDENTS ON THIS CAMPUS. THIS IS THEIR HOME. WE ARE HERE AS FACULTY BECAUSE THIS IS ALSO WHERE WE TEACH. AND WE TEACH THESE STUDENTS. AND IN OUR VIEW AND IN MY VIEW, THESE STUDENTS ARE CARRYING OUT THE MISSION OF THE UNIVERSITY, WHICH IS TO TEACH EACH OTHER AND TO LEARN ABOUT THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES THAT ARE GOING ON TODAY, TO DEBATE THEM AMONG EACH OTHER, TO TALK TO FACULTY AND LEARN ABOUT THOSE ISSUES. AND THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE DOING HERE TODAY. >> Reporter: BACK LIVE OUT HERE, WHERE WE ARE, ONCE AGAIN, ANOTHER DEMONSTRATION HERE, ONE OF SEVERAL THAT WE'VE SEEN SO FAR THIS MORNING. AND THE FOLKS SAYING THEY'RE GOING TO CONTINUE THIS THROUGHOUT THE DAY. THEY'VE BEEN MARCHING THROUGH CAMPUS GOING BUILDING BY BUILDING, AND THAT WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE REST OF THE DAY, THEY SAY, PERHAPS INDEFINITELY. REPORTING ON LIVE AT UCLA, I'M JOHN CADIZ KLEMACK. MICHAEL BACK TO YOU. >> CLASSES RESUMED THIS MORNING AT UCLA, BUT AS YOU HEARD IT WAS ANYTHING BUT BACK TO NORMAL. MICHELLE VALLES LIVE IN WESTWOOD FOR THAT PART OF THE STORY FOR US. MICHELLE, GOOD MORNING. >> Reporter: MICHAEL, IT'S ANYTHING BUT QUIET HERE. YOU HAVE CHOPPERS, SIRENS, DEMONSTRATORS. A LOT OF THE STUDENTS DOING THE BACK AND FORTH. THEY CAME BACK FOR CLASS TODAY, NOW THEY'RE HEADED BACK HOME, AS WE ARE NOW BACK TO REMOTE LEARNING. THE HEADLINE FROM "THE DAILY BRUIN" UCLA ESTABLISHES OFFICE OF CAMPUS SAFETY AND LEGAL AID OFFERED TO DETAIN UCLA PROTESTERS. UNLIKE MANY UNIVERSITIES, UCLA HAS QUARTERFINALS. THEIR FINALS ARE NOT UNTIL NEXT MONTH. SO, BACK TO CLASS THIS MORNING WAS ANYTHING BUT ROUTINE, WITH ALL OF THE NOISE AND THE DISRUPTIONS. VERY HARD TO FOCUS. MANY OF THOSE STUDENTS CONDEMNING LAST WEEK'S POLICE SWEEP WERE MET WITH MORE POLICE AND CAMPUS DISRUPTION THIS MORNING. THE YELLOW TAPE OUTSIDE MOORE HALL AND THE AREA SURROUNDING THEM KEPT STUDENTS FROM GETTING TO THEIR CLASSES. BUT THAT YELLOW TAPE DID COME DOWN RIGHT AROUND 9:00 A.M. MANY NOT SURPRISED TO SEE THE SIT-INS TAKE PLACE, AS SOME SAY LAST THURSDAY'S POLICING RESPONSE TO ANTIWAR PROTESTERS OUTSIDE ROYCE HALL WAS INEFFECTIVE AND WOULD MOTIVATE MORE STUDENTS TO CARRY ON PROTESTING. AND THAT'S WHAT WE SAW AND ARE SEEING THIS MORNING. >> I DO NOT FULLY AGREE WHAT THE SCHOOL IS DOING, JUST RESUME EVERYTHING AS IF IT'S NORMAL, BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE THE SCHOOL CAN'T JUST IGNORE, SHOULD ACKNOWLEDGE WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK AND EXPECT EVERYTHING TO BE NORMAL AGAIN. >> IT'S SCARY, YOU KNOW? YOU KNOW, SEEING ALL THESE PEOPLE AND ALL THIS SECURITY AND ALL THIS -- IT'S NOT THE UCLA THAT I'VE SEEN AND I'VE GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO. AND IT'S SCARY. >> KNOWING THIS IS HAPPENING AT COLLEGE CAMPUSES EVERYWHERE. >> EVERYWHERE. EVERYWHERE. AND AT MY OLD SCHOOL, UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA, THROUGHOUT THE UA MALL, IT'S EVEN SCARIER. >> Reporter: SO, IT'S A VERY FLUID SITUATION, GIVEN THE LATEST NEWS WITH THAT CEASEFIRE AS WELL. RIGHT NOW ON CAMPUS, YOU HEAR THE CHOPPERS. YOU HEAR THE DEMONSTRATORS. AND, AGAIN, THE BRUIN ALERT THAT JUST CAME DOWN, CLASSES NOW BACK TO REMOTE LEARNING FOR TODAY, POSSIBLY TOMORROW. THAT
