hello everyone I'm Steve president of pool management this video today is an informative video to teach you how to do everything you need to do on any given shift you have we're gonna start off now by showing you what you do when you first arrive to the pool I have my two lifeguards here they're gonna go ahead and demonstrate what happens upon arrival when you first arrive at the pool your first step is to go ahead and open the gate now each pool will either have a lock with a code or a lock box that will contain the keys to each site once you open the box and you receive the keys you'll be able to open any lock inside the pool facility secondly once you arrive you're gonna want to go ahead and locate your lifeguards supply box and tubes here at this pool they're located in the pump room the white box that you find at each pool will have all the supplies you need for your shift as well as the red tube that is needed for each lifeguard if you have multiple guards on the pool you will have multiple tubes now once you have relocated your box and you've brought it out you want to make sure that you go ahead and punch into the makeshift app as you can see here you go ahead and you punch in on your phone if you do not punch in it does not record what time you arrived and will show you that you have been late now the items that are in the lifeguard box are all the items that you will need to keep your day running smooth and if should the Board of Health show up this is what you'll need to show them it has your test kit for chemicals it's going to have your chemical logbook it's gonna have your sign in guestbook your safety binder and in most pools it'll either have the first-aid kit or the first-aid kit will be located somewhere near the box your next step after locating all of your supplies is to go ahead and test the pool water this must be done upon arrival as the chemicals will need to be adjusted if they're off angel is gonna show you here how to do it first step is gonna be to grab what's called the comparator hold that up angel that is your comparator what a comparator does is that's where the water goes and tells you what the reading is when you've added the proper chemicals in order to fill the comparator angel will follow over angel over to the pool what you want to do is you cannot take the water from the very top of the pool you must put the water or put your arm about halfway down into the water and then flip the comparator over to fill it that way there are lines on each side of the comparator that'll tell you where the water needs to be you can just shake it or move it until you get to it then the best thing to do is to take your comparator filled with water back to your table your guard table where your book is now you have three different chemicals here you have two with yellow lids and one with a red lid now the yellow lids go in the left side which is the smaller side of the comparator it's five drops of each yellow lid and then on the other side the larger of the side is five drops of the red lid you then put the cap back on you do not have to shake the comparator violently you just invert it twice then you hold it up I usually hold it up toward a cloud or toward a building something light-colored and you can compare your readings from there it will show you what the reading is you then take your reading so say chlorine being say chlorine is a three you go ahead and you record it on your chemical logbook at the time that you take the test so you take the test at 8:00 a.m. you write three under free chlorine and then you check your pH which is the right side you then record seven point eight or whatever the pH is in that column you've then put your initials on the bottom that you did the test this must be done every hour as it is a Board of Health regulation if the Board of Health shows up and it has not been done there is violations and fines involved the next step you're gonna do is once you've arrived you've got your book you want to make sure that you set everything else up you need for the day you have to make sure when you arrive you have all of your gear you need each lifeguard must have their whistle with them and on if you do not have a whistle you must let the office know you need one proper attire for the day is a lifeguard bathing suit certified by the Red Cross okay your next step in your day after you've tested the chemicals and recorded in the logbook is gonna be the general maintenance of the pool you'll need to vacuum the pool if needed now by saying if needed meaning that if the pool is completely clean without zero debris or any leaves or anything in it then you may not need to vacuum it you may just need to scooped it out with the net here you see mat and Angel are grabbing the vacuum hose and the vacuum head and going over toward the skimmer of the pool first step is gonna be to go ahead and attach the vacuum hose to the vacuum head by doing this you're just gonna simply put the vacuum hose slid over top of the end of the vacuum head where there is a little white ring you then feed the vacuum hose all the way down through the water as you see angel doing this will remove all the air out of the vacuum hose if you do not do this you will cause the pump to lose Prime and will have no pressure to vacuum as you can see in this video there are two people doing this now but this job is easily done with just one person you do not have to hold the vacuum handle you can leave that resting down on the deck the next step you're gonna take the basket that's in the skimmer out as you see Matt doing now put it off to the side reach the hose in through the front and off of the skimmer and place the hose in the hole if it's in the bottom of the skimmer the hole will have suction coming through it so you'll be able to feel water getting sucked down through once your hose is hooked up and your vacuum is attached you can then go ahead and start pushing the unit around the pool it is ideal to do this in a slower fashion as you do not stir up as much debris you will need to do this to the entire pool and get out any debris that's in the pool this is must be done as soon as you arrive to the pool as patrons cannot swim while you were vacuuming if you have any questions or don't know how to do this please feel free to call the office and we'll send someone out to show you once you finish vacuuming the entire pool and making sure that all debris is off the bottom of the pool and the pool looks clean you then go ahead and disconnect your vacuum hose goes out the same way it went in you then pull the hose up out of the water draining all the water out of the hose Matt will now show you go ahead and put the skimmer basket back in as well and you put the lid back on the skimmer again this is a job that can easily be done by one person after removing the vacuum hose and head from the pool you disconnect the pole from the hose you take each and put them in their designated locations making sure the pool area is clean and free from debris is also a part of your daily responsibilities as you can see here much of the deck is clear free from debris there are some trip hazards that you see here as you see the garden hoses out you must make sure that you roll that up before your shift starts as you do not want little children running and tripping or slipping to your mat demonstrates going ahead and rolling it up into the bin you want to make sure that when before you allow patrons to enter the pool area that you do a full complete walkthrough of the pool making sure that there are no trip hazards there are no dangerous areas there are no problems that need to be addressed prior to the opening of the pool periodically as the day goes on when you have a lull in the amount of people that are here you can go ahead and grab the skimmer net and skim any of the debris from the top of the pool this can be done anytime during the day whether patrons are using the pool or not and if you keep up on this and you keep the top of the pool clean less debris falls to the bottom of the pool requiring less vacuuming all right everyone so your job as a lifeguard is actually a very easy job but it's also a very important job we want to make sure that you're doing the right thing every day at every shift so I want you to treat each pool as if it's your own personal pool and that the patrons that are using are your own personal family members and friends make sure that you keep your eye open for safety issues make sure that you keep the pool area clean and free if there's bathrooms at each pool make sure that they're clean you don't have to go in and scrub the toilets but make sure there's no garbage on the floor make sure there's paper towels and there's toilet paper there take pride in your job and and just make sure at the end of the day that you always think you've done the right thing there are some big rules that you have to follow one is you cannot have your cell phone out and be using your cell phone while at the pool that's a board of health rule as well as our company rule you must always be watching people when they're in the pool if you have residents here in the pool area you must be sitting in the lifeguard chair watching them even if they're just in a lounge chair you can't be hanging out over by the soda machine or in the bathroom your job is to watch everyone in the pool if you guys follow the basic rules you'll have a very good season we do have managers that will be checking on you daily so just want to make sure you're doing the right thing and that everything's running smooth all right if you have any questions please don't hesitate to give us a call at the office and again let's have a great season thanks
