Day in the Life of a Female Surgery Resident

hey everybody welcome to another Vlog with me for those of you who are new my name is America I'm a pgy 4 surgical resident in the South I thought I'd make a new like update Vlog to kind of show y'all how things are now um a lot of y'all have been asking me to make a new one so I thought I would my first day of fourth year is tomorrow I will be in charge of a pediatric surgery team so that's going to be you know a big jump I'm going to be in charge of like a service um as the chief resident so definitely very nervous so I'm about to jump into bed at 8pm because I have to wake up at five in the morning and start my night routine read a little bit and get comfortable I thought already took my melatonin um and then start my week so if that sounds interesting to you then just keep watching [Music] thank you [Music] I have this gratitude journal from curse gazot that I used to ride on right in in 2020 and periodically I write in as a resident when I'm feeling particularly down I just read my last entry apparently and I don't really remember much about this in June of 2022 I was sick and I felt like I was feeling really down like there isn't much to be thankful for but nevertheless I was thankful for my mom my family my few friends trying to make it time to see them my apartment I guess and my wonderful cat gonna take him outside that guy over there his name is Calyx by the way so I think it's kind of cool that you know through this book I'm able to see that I did have difficult times and I was able to get through it even us doctors a lot of people look up to us and think that our lives are great there's plenty of times when you don't feel smart you don't feel successful and you don't feel motivated the thing to learn is your own individual way of coping with whatever you're going through life is pretty good uh I'm just really nervous about tomorrow I'm nervous that I'm going to be leading a team and though I still have my attendings I feel like a lot of new responsibility is on my shoulders so these are children of course so you know every patient is important but children in particular so I just want to make sure that I'm the best doctor that they could have that I don't miss anything and just try to be very thorough with all of their cases so that's what I'm kind of worried about right now I think I'll go ahead and write about it so maybe one day I can think about how I was dealing with this and how I eventually overcame it as well [Music] alrighty good night everyone I will see y'all in the morning bye-bye good morning everybody let's get started with the day it's about um 5 17. I snoozed a little bit but now it's time to get up [Music] thank you [Music] I'm heading you guys I just suddenly became super super nervous knowing that all of the previous Chiefs who could help me through these times are no longer here and it is just me make it my way through the forest that is medicine so wish me luck today please just finished with my first place as a fourth year all right so far so good I finished two cases first one I did the second one I walked my junior through I think she did a pretty good job so that's great I am currently on the pediatric surgery team like I've said I have a third year it was very strong and she's a good friend of mine so I'm enjoying my team and then I have a brand new intern and his first day was today so but um so far I'm realizing that fourth year is pretty cool because the surgery patients are checked in and the notes will be generally written by The Intern the third year we'll see all of the consults and I'm more or less here to make sure that I see all the patients everything goes smoothly but mostly I just get to operate or help my third year learn how to operate so that's actually I'm learning is a really cool aspect of fourth year is really concentrating more on patience and operating rather than the little menial tasks that all doctors have to learn just taking a little breather a little break everything's going very smoothly so far and I hope it stays that way hey Lily so lovely is my third year working with me on Peds how excited are you for being a third year I am very excited um it's definitely a lot more operating time so that'll be really fun this is my intern Brian Brian how excited are you to be a doctor I am so excited thrilled to uh at least get an intern year over I'm an anesthesia intern I think it's a great mix of uh Hands-On practical and also cerebral problem solving simultaneously so you get to Best of Both Worlds and there's minimal charting all done for the workers are gone that's what I love is that it times down not so longer I have to stay in work also I reached most of my activity requirements from just being at work finally back from work I'm just going to take the time to eat relax and maybe we'll exercise I don't know so this is what I am packing for lunch tomorrow I'm packing a whole avocado that I eat with salt um freshly washed berries and then this is shrimp Alfredo um but the alfredo sauce is actually vegan and you can get it at Publix it may not be a job but it's work hope would that mean that you have two nights off too right now I am at our community apartment gym it's pretty small but it has treadmills so even if I just sit here and stand for 15 minutes I try to get to the gym for 15 minutes and maybe I'll do something maybe I won't um but most of the time I'll be motivated to at least walk or go on an incline for 15 minutes and honestly 15 minutes a day that's fine with me because I usually don't do anything at all so I'll see y'all after my workout try to get Kayla some outdoor time he is on a moderately successful weight loss Journey so I try to encourage him to exercise by taking him outside we can run around instead of my small apartment like all right I'm back in my apartment cats over there I think I'm going to take a shower you know brush my teeth get ready for bed take my melatonin and get in bed because I'm exhausted tomorrow is a holiday July 4th happy July 4th everybody so tomorrow won't be very interesting so I think I'm just gonna end the Vlog here but I hope it was good seeing me again uh update for everyone who hadn't seen me in a while and if you're new here then it was pleasure meeting you um if y'all have any questions about anything please leave them in the comments below and I'll do my best to answer them but other than that um that is the day in the life of a you know surgical resident and I hope it was interesting or at least educational alright goodbye everybody
