one of my subscribers asked me what life was like on a bunker boat in New York so I figured I'd put together a day in the life of a tugboat captain in New York welcome to my channel I'm Tim a professional Mariner an alternative energy enthusiast and an adventure traveler [Music] so the first thing you have to know is that the boat is split into four watches to four to six hour watches for the captain and to six hour watches for the meet so my day starts about five o'clock in the morning do a few push-ups and head for the shower you then a few more push-ups you like anyone else you got to get dressed you and then I'm off to go get some coffee start the day already ah fresh dark coffee No and look at this looks like somebody forgot to order coffee filters when we went drug shopping my crew always makes fun of me for using benefiber but they're a lot younger than I am and they don't understand how benefiber has changed my life then it's time to walk up to the wheelhouse and see what the day he has in store quick check of the orders see what's going on it's the weekend so I have to do payroll check everything out make sure everything's shipshape in Bristol fashion so the orders say you have to pick up this barge that I am teaching on hook seven two and a half at seven o'clock and bring it to this ship and my heart terminal 4 feet so it's time to turn on the steering check everything out turn on the lights then Reggie let's lines go when we get underway [Laughter] so is as often the case you try to be on time or maybe even little early and you come over it's like everything's all set and we run into a problem in this case a delay there's our barge and if you notice that black thing that goes all the way around that's called the boom it's a containment boom just in case they ever spill any oil that stays in there until they can get it you know the cleanup crews can you cleaned it up so it doesn't affect the environment anyway all that stuff's supposed to be gone by now and of course that's a different company so we're one company that moves the oil and the refinery or the tank farm over here is another company and then we've got to take it to a ship that's another company and he's operated through a agent it's another company and oh the boom that's by another company so there's a lot of things that have to come together to make everything work out just right but anyway we'll sit here and wait for the boom to go and then we have another problem that's that we need to get in push here so we need to get around the back of this barge but there probably isn't enough room for us so if there's enough room for us to fit back we'll get the barge we'll slide it up the dock tie it up again and then get in behind it and then get on our way hey so the boom boat just showed up see this little guy over here he's gonna grab that boom and wrap it up and then we'll do go do our things get into position slide the barge ahead so we can get behind it [Music] so we're taking in the Lions to slide the barge up so we can get in behind it it's a good time for me to check in with traffic we have to all of our moves have to be controlled by BTS vessel traffic services so we call them in on the check engine traffic from the Elk River [Music] when we wait for traffic good morning and tug Elk River over here at I am DT con hook two and a half seven we're gonna be making up to the loaded tank March double skinned 305 our dimensions overall will be 350 by 13 deep draft on the tug let's get underway and head up to Port Elizabeth to go alongside the ship the Roosevelt they're just probably gonna be some is that going to be like 68 something like that dude copyin oh birth 62 very good see you on 14 under regi when we do this we don't have to go up too far we go up just a couple bits or whatever I want good if you give me a good bow line the good Stern line that's all I really need but we got the barge moved up the dock time to get around and getting back in the knotch getting pushed once we get in the knotch we put a headline up to hold us in place and then we put up one leg of the push gear and then the other leg and then tighten it up with a winch [Music] so now we're made up push gear we can get underway for our ship up before Elizabeth so now that we're ambushed here I can't see over the barge so I come up to the upper house to get a better view so this is the upper house this one turn the steering on check the steering check the engines good turn the chartplotter up turn the radar up security called upriver singling up lines IMT t-con hook two and a half of seven loaded parts on the nose will be coming out and i westbound and the kills bound up for ship side birth sixty-two Port Elizabeth Tokyo River look at Reggie flip that line off like it's nothing alright I'm gonna squeeze in the stern [Music] after checking back in with traffic we get under way and make our way through the kills up to portal to go ships I'd give a big container ship a whole bunch of fuel [Music] so I don't know if you can see it or not but there's a container ship coming at me right up there swansea from the hill river good morning camp I'm gonna hug the Bayon side see on one if that's cool with you very good have a good trip [Music] as we make our approach to the ship over here Reggie's calling distances for me and helping me out as we try to get this bunker barge alongside the ship [Music] [Music] once the barge is all secured it's time to break the push gear down okay the job's done now all the best time it's breakfast time rich nice what time is it breakfast hey Danny I see the muscle shirts came in what are the muscles coming tomorrow yeah some people asked if we have cooks on the books and there used to be before there was a strike a long time ago so right now the the deckhand on the meats watch cooks dinner other than that everyone else fend for themselves [Music] we did another job in between here but uh once you've seen one you've seen them all so let's get into the end of the watch my mate is here he's checking the orders seeing what's up next he'll be taken over shortly well I go to bed so off to bed you have the car so after my six hour watch it's time for me to lay down then before you know it it's five o'clock in the afternoon time to wake up start all over again for the next watch it is boho are we cooking hold you hold chicken you do it on this we've got a new toy [Music] the ninja you ready for dinner big ring [Music] working on the dreaming whoa chicka chicka what's up nanny oh you're going on pretty sunset it's time to go [Music] our next orders were to retrieve a barge from one ship and bring it over to one of our labors over in Gowanus Bay you so in the interest of trying to make a video that doesn't last like forever or at least 12 hours I've had to cut a lot of stuff out and we've done a few jobs in between there but one to give you guys a kind of a broad perspective of what it's like to work on a boat in New York Harbor good company and good crew it's a great way of life and thank you for watching if you like this video please consider liking and subscribing to it and I really need some subscribers that would really help me out thanks again for watching leave me a comment you want to see other types of videos like this [Music]
