[Music] hi i'm stephanie and this is my home the 16th century chateau de la land la land was owned for hundreds of years by a family of marquis who were at the heart of french royal life one of them even had the honor of being sent by king louis xv to greet marie antoinette on her arrival in france but far from being a stuffy museum this chateau is a living home i live here all the time and i'm regularly joined by my mother my family my friends and wonderful volunteers from all over the world who helped me to lovingly restore this historic home welcome to la land a chateau filled with life love and laughter good morning good morning how are you i'm very well how are you i'm good as you can see i have decided after sleeping in my bed a couple of nights with the other bed spread on that everyone is correcting the comments and there's two brick red it just it doesn't work and i really do want this one on it so i'm i'm nearly finished actually i'm just taking out all of the heading tape i'm going to hem all of the way around the sides are already okay and probably do a bit where i fold it over so that i can turn it on oh yeah a little bit as well but i've decided i'm not going to quilt and there's two reasons for that the first is that i want to be able to change my mind if i'm not quite sure that it's right but the second and most important one is i think i'm going to prefer it so it's just a beautiful piece of fabric draped over the bed i remember one of my friends when i went to venice bought a lovely just cut piece of fabric in a venetian damask it was incredible with silk and a kind of brocade pattern and got back to the apartment she was renting and just threw it over the bed and it looked so incredible like that she's brought it home and did exactly the same thing on her bed here and it looks great hang on am i finished i thought everyone left ah still got one today uh and i like that i like just a piece of fabric so i want to give that impression it's gonna look great you think so yeah really hope so well hello hello sif where is it julian it's not often you come and visit me basically on my balcony this is your new chill out zone very nice i have to say it's good to have a bit of company while sewing i have great news yes you have no idea who is downstairs sitting in the table um sarah and steve i thought they were coming tomorrow tomorrow okay they are coming disappearing whilst they get changed musivia fell off his scaffolding and i just heard the full story i knew that he'd fallen but he was actually eight meters high on scaffolding under the vault of a church when the stone also just fell when he was up he saw it coming towards the scaffolding and then it just it went and all this guy holding was pushed and he's incredibly lucky actually because all that happened all but the crystals in his inner ear got completely messed up and he's had a month of vertigo but it's now better so baby [Music] foreign foreign three weeks and he'll be starting i can't believe it honestly i've heard this before admittedly but i don't know just seems like a a sign that he got better so well and he's going to be able to come and start it's wonderful i've finished the heading of this so i need to quickly get dressed because before i carry on with this i have a very important meeting with davey who is going to reveal his master plan for the gardens the first part is the part that actually needs the least attention yes the vegetable garden the wall garden that we're already working on and that's the part over here with the vegetable beds visible the vegetable beds themselves work perfectly fine as they are yes the irrigation system has been added so that's easier for maintenance yes and that can go for the next couple of decades so that's not a problem okay the old fruit trees at the bottom of the plan um there used to be asparagus many many decades ago um so i'd like to repeat that by trying to clean them up a bit so that's these here the blob here one day will be beautiful estimated trees yeah the space wasn't balanced if you stood in the middle of the garden you weren't in the middle of the actual space yes absolutely it's bigger on the right hand side indeed so that's why i added the pergola at the top of the plan on the screen i will be the laser site yeah on the side of the pergola i'd like to add a couple of espalier fruit trees so that the pergola isn't just one long walk in sun because it's a it's a very sunny part of the garden it's a really good idea so that there's a bit of shade in the walkway now there are four trees that i don't recognize here that do not currently exist around a central fountain but also it currently doesn't exist indeed so those are five elements i've added to the existing structure so those are two examples of trees you could use they're beautiful yeah the one on the left is a more narrow uh cherry yes an ornamental cherry it doesn't give any fruit okay and this is an ornamental pear which gets a little bit wider but they're both spectacular when they flower in spring it must be glorious yeah i was thinking because i agree with you that the borders um with the box hedging around what will be the fountain are a bit too small but i wondered about adding i don't know square ones no no no we could easily add four square uh boxes it's a similar width of the beds at the moment um they can also be connected to the watering system because it's already there you just need to tap into it and it wouldn't interfere with the trees that you planned around it so that would still look really good this is the greenhouse and then here there's an open shed which is being used as the gardener's tea room the infamous now garden apparently but it made me think actually it wouldn't be a stupid place to genuinely have a little tea station in the garden so that we have a little fridge in there just a tiny sink and a kettle it doesn't need any more than that but people can make a cup of tea people keep cold drinks yeah and it doesn't need that much work it just needs to be cleared out it's already a structure yeah no true the second pdf uh are the two main courtyards okay in the main courtyard itself um we're not going to change that much because it looks great that is as it is already um but kind of like the flower the vegetable garden beforehand and it's always looked a bit flat to me yeah because the chateau is well it's not the highest shadow in the world but it's quite imposing in the size of the of the courtyard itself so that's why i added height around the box edges and how have you done that because all i can see obviously on this plan and we're talking about these little l-shaped areas around the box hedging what are they those are trimmed lime trees oh is that the left hand side on this i love them yeah i really love them so you're going to put grass can you believe it where are all the cars where's the rubbish where's the trailer good question fast forward 2025 so to tie the entire view of the chateau together when you're driving up from the main road yes i've added big hedges in principle next to the moat to look like old defensive buildings that's a brilliant idea yeah actually really so that's this one on the right hand side in the powerpoint yeah true and that's these along here these u-shaped hedges yeah so they'll be evenly spaced along the entire width of the chateau when you drive up and then there's border in between but when you look at them from the other side from the garden out they won't be completely filled but they'll be open so you have planting areas or a place to place one of your famous statues i've got my famous tattoos yet but boy will i get a famous set different areas kind of like jewel boxes you can fill with whatever whatever it takes your fancy i love it like little secret nooks almost you only see once you're in the shatter and from outside you get this more imposing defensive look yeah these u-shapes are actually big kind of used to look defensive almost like a defensive wall linking along how amazing but the best thing is because they're not solid inside we can have a statue or a seating area or each one can be a different little no no yeah that's cool i love nooks and crannies i know me too it's really cool isn't that great it's so fun i really love the idea of a defensive little defense yeah to bring in how solid the old wing is round to this side yeah davey and i carried on talking through all of those plans for over two hours and i've given the full video of that to my patrons but i obviously didn't have time to do a two-hour chateau diaries this week so i've just put the two areas that we're working on next but here is the full plan so that you at least get an idea of where we go and you'll see that he's made a formal garden in front of the old wing there's an island in the future lake there's a giada alanglais behind the chapel so many exciting ideas and as we tackle each of those areas of the garden i will talk to you about those plans in depth now that is what i call burger knight hi everyone this is amazing cats where's the badminton court going oh about the tennis court did we think about that stephanie i thought that you'd enjoy floating around an inflatable peacock more ah okay tennis court is becoming the swimming pool oh really i thought it was i thought it was gonna be the tennis and the i didn't realize that it was either no it's a bigger problem we don't know how long we'll have okay next question davey where's the croquet lawn going to be there's quite a bit of land i don't think any of it will be flat enough for a crop i don't know i think that we can still use because we're not changing that back lawn we do croquet there occasionally don't pretend you're a croquet purist will there be more flower beds i think compared to now 15 times as many wow more flowers mary i could come and visit again that's what i think you could come and move in with 15 times more flower belts i'll wait till i see the flower beds and the flowers in them and then you'll rate them and decide whether they're worth your retirement matty that's not the spirit doesn't it terrify you no just the thought that everything will be earth no it thrills me possibly between three to five for me it's like seeing a wall come down i just get really excited okay now mummy will hate her it's going to be a building site for the next 20 years no the next five the next five yes and then it will be beautiful by my 50th birthday i hope that it can be at least nice for the party so something to aim for five years also a deadline yeah yeah i need a deadline deadlines are great we have been sent a whole array of amazing salts lots and lots of different flavors uh in chateau unwrapped so we've just been filming that and we decided then we're going to have lunch with just a lot of boiled eggs and try all the different salts on them the flavors look really cool bulk kelp kimchi salt madrana smoked san juan blend and popcorn blender this is just a plain salt looking at them has made my savory tooth go wild and what better way of trying salt them with eggs we also received a little egg timer whom we've named heggy the hedgehog because he's gonna tie our eggs you see obviously philip came up with the name which salt are you going for first it's a big decision yeah we have so many that's the first one i'm trying bull kelp and you're trying the kimchi yeah i'm gonna go for the spicy editing one oh this is smoked that's fantastic making a sort of open sandwich that was really good but now i'm trying the kimchi you say it's not too spicy davey i get i never thought that i would do a salt tasting for lunch vinegar but it's amazing so fun yeah it's very good my my favorite was the island blend with garlic and pepper and that was really good hello hello hi hi i like it when you're in the kitchen in that dress oh thank you yes i am cooking outfits and you match the kitchen beautifully what are you cooking today um slow cooked pork oh my favorite yeah we love it and then meringue and the lemon cream for dessert tomatoes for starter with mozzarella so sounds fantastic i love today oh the smell oh sorry not the smell of you it's so hot i can't describe how nice that basket smells maui's just come in with the herbs for tonight [Music] and we got some butter not too many strawberries but i've got some from them no two isn't too many flowers for decoration lavender scent i love our cucumbers they are the most delicious cucumbers i've ever had last year's were really bitter yes it's a big difference this is a treat yes isn't it the best cucumber in the world i don't know what variety it was and i found we don't have much more cute um carrots left but i'm going to use the top of the ones we have to make a pesto so this carrot top pasta yeah nikki uh all that smells about this yeah so i love that anyway i'm hot enjoy the smell is delicious oh where is dan the gardener dan the gardener oh there's his phillip phillip ii but down the garden has disappeared is he hiding in his little lunch area it's not oh i saw you we came to discuss because i know you've seen the plans and a cup of tea we upgraded the gardener's tea room inside while the builder's on here well one day it's going to be over there it's already over there yeah but it's going to be a gardener's tea room yeah yeah davey and i were talking about it and we thought well actually it's sort of the perfect place to have it yeah good you do realize that it won't be very private you'll have everyone like oh let's have tea in the garden yeah the situation has changed now so we had a gardener's teeth room and it's now going to be the tea room yeah exactly right the tea if you kick me out of that tea room i'll have to make another poor video about it poor me poor me look at me i'm in the third compost bin yeah the new gardener's tea room i'll put a roofer with that one so the drip system is on and working i'm sorry what sort ah because i don't see a manifold i connected that one bed up just to check with the wall oh let's have a look davey you're excited yeah because yes okay there's no manifold it is not the garden water yet did you connect it to a regular hose yeah just suppose oh look a little bit of moisture at the end of every tomato plant and they are repaying us for that moisture with tomatoes it'll be another month till they're open okay there's lots of tomatoes yeah yeah there's a huge one over there oh look at the size of this tomato already yeah there won't be a man that's my hand to put it in perspective it's huge what do you think the next bits that we can do are easiest things to do are the trees in here and in the first courtyard in the main one oh that that's one of the things i'm most excited about those trees yeah those can go in this fall okay that will be perfectly possible and one thing more we talked about with nick is trying to get the poles for the pergola uh milled from the trees he's cutting down lovely i don't wanna go give him a cut list you can do that yeah i love the idea that whilst we start new areas of the garden we completely finished the ones that we started so that the walled garden's done yeah that'd be a good one yeah yeah because that's sort of manageable and the courtyard as well that field the main courtyard i think we're not that far off so the next steps those lime trees we really need a little digger on site oh do we now you want a new toy is that what this is about they need a new toy when do i never ask you for new toys though you got the flamethrower and he's already already handed that to kirsty soon yeah i saw her with it the other day she looks pretty terrifying yeah yeah she is yeah okay a digger how much is a little digger it wouldn't be stupid to have if you bought a good one you could buy a good one for eight to ten grand but in four years you could sell it again for eight grand probably so cause now i'm a digger dealer it's a couple of grand for four years worth of work which and we'd use it every week are you going to maintain it because that's important i love the fact that dan's going to use it every week regardless of whether or not there's any digging to do who needs a little digger every week yeah isabel wants me to plant her rules let's think about excavating these beds digging the holes for the them to sit on taking out the shrubs in here i admit it's not a stupid idea quite a lot of the smaller jobs we could do ourselves without calling people this turned out to be a pricey conversation i'm beginning to wish i'd never come out first it's a gardener's tea room then it's like no it's not good enough anyone else uses the tea room now i need the compost bin turned into a tea room and now i need a digger to use and i quote every week hand on heart i will that's what worries me i always find random holes everywhere or dan was here in a trench spot out in the main courtyard do you want to look into it you can look at some prices because i honestly think that looking at diggers online might just push me over the edge yeah just take me like your screams coming from my study all right i might go see nick actually it's a lot clearer already yeah he's done quite a bit of work already he's done a lot this changes every time i come out here hi nick hi good to see you i haven't seen you for ages i can't believe the difference when i was last here it is amazing how much wood one man can move you're basically 20 men in one wow oh oh so this has been going on can we use all of these outside because uh dan said there was maple there as well but i've never used that out there we've got maple beach uh chestnut they'll be good for post fence posts things like that there's the one piece of redwood that have salvaged down there oh yes that'll be turned into something and then we've got all the pine over there so do you think it would all be suitable for the pergola or should we choose a particular type i think it would be best to make the pergola post out of the pine because it's the cheapest one so yes so the rest can be kept for more exciting things yeah true as the pergola is going to be covered with climbing plants anyway we won't see that much of the wood and the amazing thing about the pine is its uniformity it's perfectly yeah so straight we've got so much of it as well yeah and that's enough to do the whole pergola i don't have to do three of them great where the other two going quite structurally strong yeah the dreams are tight is that what you look for yeah there's mostly french pines it hasn't got any strength to it because the speed it grows yeah that's why a lot of the building timber comes from like scandinavia with the colder climates yeah so he grows slower so you actually get stronger wood yeah building but here it's grown more slowly because it's drier probably the more difficult conditions where it was planted i think there's a bit of douglas in there as well which is the only one you can use over here we now know we have all the wood yeah of the same variety and it will help to clear this area as well when we start using it and you're bringing a mill in three weeks so it's all happening it'll be milled up here fantastic okay so i'll make a cut list for the posts for the pergola and i'll give it to dan and yeah pass it on yeah okay that's great we're gonna have a cut list now we've got sunlight coming in and the redwood's gone and everything else the chestnuts have started to put out lower branches so we're actually getting trees not just these yeah not just just canopy on the top stick for the top look there are side branches coming out all because of the light now reaching the trees i've copied chestnuts they're coming back each one and that's these that are sprouting yeah oh yes see i would cop edging all the way around the chestnut how are you with that davey that's fine that's really pretty yeah yeah looks really pretty well i'll do selectively thin them out so you get three or four stems going up for each one there's a lot to do but the gardens are a big priority we're going to make them really beautiful see you in three weeks time he is a marvel yes he's very good ahead yeah yeah i mean with the team you have down the gardener kirsty and nick the tree man there's nothing you can't achieve in your garden plans well nothing davey nothing we're probably gonna need quite a few more people to get it all done within a reasonable time frame but they are a very good start they're the best start however many stages are on however far off the completion of the garden plans are whenever i look at the courtyard it gives me hope because we only started this last year and it's already transformed it is time for a petty teeth now everyone's down on the terrace hello i'm just jumping okay i reckon i can just swing down from the pergola why don't you have a rope i should i should or a water slide okay i'm coming down on my way to a penalty if i should i just pop into the kitchen see how you're getting on or what is your last weekend of cooking for the bed and breakfast that's right take it easy no well no i won't take it easy i'm going to have a tantrum and i'm going to stump my feet in their little sparkly shoes i'm the one holding a knife so okay things escalated super fast it smells delicious in here thank you um yeah ready to go i'm just waiting for people to sit down okay i'm gonna run out yeah and i will i'll ask everyone to come to the table oh excellent we got french meringue with a lemon cream and a lemon curd the last batch of mahi's lemon curd for this day exactly and we got some strawberries from the garden some from the market because we don't have enough strawberries you had two strawberries from the garden i saw them they would too but we had black parents and strawberry flower for you all so bon appetit thank you thank you thank you so much beautiful oh selma thank you brilliant you know what it's amazing you're looking different i've changed nationality your hair that was the most perfect evening we've been up very late laughing together selma made his kiss of fire it's been a perfect evening and then just as i'm
