[Music] welcome to eastside where we gather all of us each in different stage of our spiritual journey young and old all races and colors we don't exist for ourselves but for people people that haven't been invited people that haven't been cared for who have walked away from god people have a past that pushes others away it's about the hurting and those who have lost hope we gather as one church not as individuals not as separate campuses but as a family pushing towards the same thing knowing that jesus was not for the select few but for all of us we believe jesus is the hope in a world of darkness and it's through his church that the world will find life we believe who we choose to be today will determine the world of tomorrow so we have a vision to begin each day with purpose to open our hearts and minds to learn something new to let go of our comfortable living to reach the searching the broken the hurting to focus on what really matters to band together and fight against the darkness a vision to be the church jesus called us to be this isn't just a church eastside is a movement of people who gather together with jesus declaring this is for everyone well hey good [Music] [Music] people [Music] oh [Music] oh man amen you can go ahead and take a seat well this weekend we as americans remember a day that changed life as we know you know it's been 20 years since the attack on 911. and for many of us the images of burning towers in new york city are forever etched in our memory and we can recall these images so vividly you can remember where we were that fateful day and remember the brave men and women the firefighters law enforcement who paid the ultimate sacrifice in order to run to the rescue of their fellow americans in need and so we just want to take a moment to pause and to honor all of our brave first responders and those who may have lost someone on eleven so can we honor them today [Applause] as we honor those brave heroes who ran towards the crisis and we also remember that we worship a god who also runs swords of crisis and you should have received a communion cup on your way in and if you didn't you can raise your hand one of our change makers will get one to you or if you joining us online grab some crackers and juice we're just gonna go into this time of communion sharing this meal taking the bread representing christ's body that was broken for us taking the cup of juice remembering christ's blood that was shed on the cross and if you want to take a pass today that's totally fine but just know that communion is available to you always whenever it is that you're ready to start a relationship with jesus and so as we take these elements today remember that god ran towards our needs as sinners you know jesus freely gave his life on our behalf and while we were sinners christ died for us while we were imperfect jesus was a perfect sacrifice so we're just going to give you a few moments of silence we'll have some scriptures on the screen for you to meditate on as you do that so this time is yours so [Music] [Music] [Music] god we are so grateful for the way that you run towards our needs god god the way that you are with us in every season god the highs and the lows and we're so grateful for the sacrifice that you made and the way that you draw us closer to you each day so god i pray for everyone in this room and everyone listening to this message god today and joining us i just pray that you would make yourself so apparent in their lives god and god i pray that you would be with us this morning as we learn i pray that we would just hear directly from you god through through dave and through gene and we love you amen well guys if you are new with us i want to say again we're stoked that you're here eastside.com next steps to learn everything you need to know about how you can jump in and you know here at eastside we give generously out of the abundance that god has given us because he's been so good to us he's been faithful he's been consistent he's given us provision and we want to respond obediently in that way and so there's a couple of different ways to give here at east side you can go to eastside.com give you can download and give through the eastside app or if you brought your gift with you today you can drop it in any of the giving boxes located at the exits you know i'm so grateful to be a part of a church that prioritizes its finances because it can be so challenging navigating the waters of debt and finances and budgets and we want to feel like money is a good thing but we get so overwhelmed and paralyzed sometimes by that and eastside you are in for a treat this weekend who is pumped to hear from dave ramsey today i am so excited to learn right alongside you guys but first we're going to hear from an east side couple about how they took control of their finances before their finances took control of them i'm heidi sabio i'm alan savio growing up my parents did use credit cards and i knew that i didn't want to be in debt but i was kind of told oh there's good debt if you're taking out loans for college it's a good debt it's okay because you're going to get a good job and you'll be able to pay it off debt to us was normal you know you got your home loans your car loans your student loans that was what everybody did we both knew we wanted to pay off our we both had student loan debt we knew we wanted to pay it off but we didn't have a plan we just thought oh yeah we'll get there we both are working we'll get there and then we um wanted to start a family we decided to adopt which that isn't cheap either so we had to save up to adopt and i think that's where like the turning point yeah was because they make you sit down and write down all your finances and you have to write down all your assets all of your liabilities after looking at that it was kind of like okay something's got to change because we're we should be way better than what i see here on paper you know i don't want to leave them with nothing i don't want to leave them with debt that i incurred i want them to have a better start her good friend from from high school they mentioned dave ramsey that they were doing the dave ramsey program the fpu class and you know we talked about that and i kind of ran into it a little bit i'm like okay so we're gonna go into this thing our goal is to get out of debt we're doing this together let's do it let's let's get out of this mess that we're in and then start making progress where we should be going the ramsey program i gave you a plan and we were able to pay off 62 000 in a year we knocked out all of our student loan debt our car did god's plan for us is not to be in debt to others he wants us to be blessed and to be able to bless others and if we're under all of this debt we can't bless others yes we're trying to dig our own way out the best three words that i can sum up with this whole process is paid in full you have nothing to worry about it's all done it's paid for and that's that's the piece that you're gonna get how amazing is that [Applause] i'm just praying and believing that alan and heidi's story is going to be your story and the story of thousands of others as we slay this monster of financial stress in our lives together in the weeks ahead alan heidi are sitting right down here thank you for telling your story we love you guys so if we haven't met my name is gene i'm one of the pastors around here and just so you know eastside is one church but we meet in multiple locations so help me give right now a great big welcome to everyone joining us on the other side of the camera in redlands and park rapids and bellflower anaheim indoors outdoors all of our online family we love you guys feel so privileged to do this together and i want to get started today with a confession and i know i'm probably the only one but i've made many foolish financial mistakes in the course of my lifetime that i wish i could go back and have a do-over on and my financial foolishness all really kind of accelerated and began in my early 20s and that's when i discovered these amazing little plastic cards that made it possible to buy things that i can't afford like clothes and restaurants and vacations and gadgets and when the bill comes due you don't even have to pay the whole thing only minimum require payments are required like are you familiar with these things and it gets even better i discovered there were even more people who wanted to give me money for things that i couldn't afford people wanted to give me money for a house for cars for furniture for boats it just seemed too good to be true i was living the american dream and i was like 70 to 75 percent of americans living paycheck to paycheck and just one missed paycheck away from a crisis now before you lose total respect for me i don't want you to think that i didn't have a savings account come on of course i had a savings account there just wasn't anything in it but i had one it was about when i turned 30 that i was introduced to the kinds of principles taught by dave ramsey and financial peace university that helped me slay the monster of financial foolishness in my life i was 33 when barbara and i got married and we have practiced these principles diligently for almost 29 years and i so badly want to help all of you find the financial peace that we have found in our lives so we just decided this fall we're going to declare war at east side we are going to make an unprecedented effort to slay the monster by offering financial peace university on every campus in every small group and make it possible for anybody and everybody to attend even if they can't afford it we'll cover it because it's that important and there's nobody better in the world to help us slay this monster and find financial peace than dave ramsey dave is a number one best-selling author like seven times a personal financial expert his national radio show is heard by 18 million people every week he's the author and genius behind the nine-week financial peace university course nine hours that have changed millions of lives and can change yours and on top of that just over the last few years dave and his wife sharon who's also with us today have become some of the greatest encouragers to barbara and me in ways they probably don't even fully realize and i can't even put into words what their kindness has meant to us so as we were planning for this unprecedented initiative you know to slay the monster this fall i shot dave an email a few months ago and just asked him is there any chance any chance you'd be willing to come to east side and help us kick it off and about 30 seconds later really i'm not kidding he wrote back and said i'm in just tell me when to be there and dave came to serve us today he wouldn't let us pay him a dime or even help with his travel expense so come on every campus every venue would you give a huge east side welcome and thank you to our friend dave ramsey thank you god [Applause] we love pastor gene and miss barbour but that's not exactly how the story went he actually emailed and said dave i know you're a great american do you believe in free speech and i said yes and he said good i want you to give one on the weekend of september 11. no that that's actually not true what he says is true so but it's a great joke so good way to start the day let's pray god you know i can do these talks by myself but they sure are better when you do them holy spirit we turn this time over to you in jesus name amen so my wife sharon and i got married 39 years ago and when we got married we were stupid as people today get married and they do it a lot smarter they get like pre-marriage counseling and we didn't know what any of that was we just got hitched and we didn't nobody told us how to prepare for the first year or to check on these things these differences in your lives we were just in love and we got married so we moved to nashville right after we got married which is where i grew up and started our lives finally got little jobs and get started those first jobs you know and and we move in this little apartment and on sunday morning my wife gets up and remembers that she's a baptist this is something she had never brought up before we had never discussed this jesus god stuff or anything like that i was a beer drinking hell raisin hillbilly redneck so it didn't come up but she's a baptist and she says we're going to church i said we're not going to church it's sunday sunday you drink beer and watch football what is wrong with you woman well in nashville it's the buckle of the bible bell not just the bible belt it's the buckle in other words in nashville there are more baptists than people and so she says we're going to church i says no we're not and we had our first big fight and she cries and gets mad and storms out the highways and byways in nashville didn't take her long to find her tribe so she goes into a little baptist church and in a church she comes down from those baptist people prayed for her heathen husband this went on for about six or eight months it was not going good y'all i mean like monday through friday's pretty good but here comes sunday it ain't gonna be this is not good because i'm i'm bowed up i'm not going and she's not she you know she now that she has this memory she's going so plus she's got all this sunday encouragement from these people so i got about that time i got into one of my beer drinking buddies there's a lot of beer in this story but um one of my beer drinking buddies called and he said hey man i'm in this thing we can get rich because of course we were poor and he said we could get a yacht and like an airplane and you know we'll be like rich people if you get in this thing with me one of these multi-level things you know where you know you're going to get rich and you don't work much and you you know and you make all your friends mad and you know and so um anyway i got in that thing for about three months with him and we were so dumb we would go to happy hour and then go make sales calls and we couldn't figure out why we couldn't sell anything this is how dumb this is daryl his other brother daryl right i mean this is bad and so we go to this sales conference one of these rah-rah things in birmingham alabama about two hours south of nashville in the alabama theater in my mind there was ten thousand people there but i used the alabama theater the other day for a thing it holds 800. and you know how things shrink when you get older so um you know like you ever go back to your elementary school how tiny it is it's weird you know and so anyway we go down there and we're up in the back row and there was a guy there on the stage that day that we wanted to see he's who we wanted to be we wanted to be like him he was why we got in this he had the yacht the airplane and big check that said he made 400 000 a minute or whatever you know the whole hype thing right and so he's doing his routine up there and we that's the guy we want to see end of the day they put him on so we sat there the whole day taking notes and we had written down five things we said if we could learn these five things about the business we would we would be able to be rich and have a yacht and an airplane and everything right and and god dumb but this guy not only did he have credibility before he got up there he was the guy we wanted to be right but on top of that his talk it was as if he had our five things as the outline for his talk i mean by the time he finished if he had told us to eat dirt we would have done it i mean he owned us everything he said to do we were going to do because he he was who we wanted to be and then he covered our our questions right he answered we were ready we were on fire and he said and then there's one more thing and i looked at my buddy and said no there's not we got our five and he goes if you don't know god and his son named jesus you're going to struggle in business because you're always going to go and see the customers a place to take things from you're a taker rather than an opportunity to serve and a giver he said if you meet jesus you meet god you're going to learn to give and those are the only people that build sustainable business in the business world which is a true fact he said you have to learn to serve be giving rather than taking you have to bring more than you take always and he said and when you meet christ you'll understand that and i told my buddy i said he has he been talking to my wife so we go back to the holiday inn and we we're fumbling around we open up the nightstand there's a gideon's bible well okay baby game on we got this is what this guy said to do right so we open it up new i mean it's the king james version shakespeare and jesus there is no chance these rednecks are getting through this i'm just saying okay let me close that but i did go home tell my wife i said we're going to church and she said who are you and what have you done with my husband i said well the guy said we need to go so we're going so we visited some churches and and some of them um i'm kind of you can tell kind of wide open and crazy and some of these churches weren't like people sleep in the choir and stuff and i'm like if there's a god you ought to be a little excited about it and have some fun like we've been having in here this morning i agree you know so uh uh finally we found this little church about 400 people this is way back i mean this is 40 years ago people actually wore suits and stuff to church you know and dressed up and things you know and maybe not here i don't know but we did and it's like and so and uh we go in this little church the pastor was like a man's man which was cool because i thought christians were all wimps and um he's like he would just make these statements he would say stuff like and the bible says this and if you don't agree with that you're what's known as wrong i like this guy you know he stands there you know squares his shoulders and takes a stand i like this guy and and then they there were this they started doing the singing and stuff and this woman in the choir raised her hand like she knew the answer to some question and then and of course we're sitting on the back row you know when you're visiting the church you sit on the back row so you can hit eject and get out right if it gets weird and so we're sitting on the back row and uh another one pops our hand up starts doing this stuff and this is before people were always i mean only the weird churches had winds up in there those days i mean and um wow and i told her i said if they get snakes out i'm out of here but that pasture stood in there and this is old school again it's a long time ago there's a little bitty church 400 people at the time and it later grew to 8 000 people but um he would stand at the back at the end of service and shake everybody's hand and his wife would stand with him she's a big squishy woman she'd give you a big grandma hug you know and just just loving sweet wonderful strong compassionate people and they hugged me loved on me into the kingdom and where i met jesus and was baptized there and started my whole journey of learning about this god stuff it was pretty incredible i was just a kid i do everything backwards i did that as i was doing that we started i was on that little multi-level thing for just a little while i started i went to my next get rich quick thing i started doing nothing down real estate i started buying real estate and uh only this time it worked uh and i got rich by the time i was 26 we had about 4 million worth of real estate and i made 250 000 that year this is in the early 80s and this is cash taxable income now i don't know what neighborhood you grew up in but the neighborhood i grew up in we called 20 000 a month income rich it was fun fun fun we were having a blast so i met god on the way up we were having so much fun sharing like some sparkly things so we got her some and they weren't big enough so we got her some more and i got i got a car y'all you ever had that car you wanted to get if you ever got some money that car and the car i wanted was this i wanted a jaguar because nobody in my old neighborhood could spell jaguar much less exotic car jaguar so baby i got me a within 90 days i was a jaguar yeah that's like right i was having so much fun we went to hawaii rednecks in hawaii oh man unbelievable we loved it so much you know what we did we went back we were having fun now i am not here this morning to tell you money will make you happy it will not make you happy money will make you more of what you already are if you're fun people and you get money you'll be really fun if you're angry and you get money god help the people in your life because you will become a rage-a-holic a narcissistic power junkie you become more of what you already are if you're depressed and you get money it won't make you not be depressed honey i'm sorry to make you worse if you're lonely it'll make you more lonely money will make you more of what you already are good and bad if you're compassionate and generous and you get money you become what we call a philanthropist and you impact your whole community and everything around you and crazy crazy's around it gets bigger too crazy's in every family y'all know this right and if you don't think there's crazy in your family that means it's you so we're cruising along everything's going good but i had done some stupid stuff with money how many of y'all have ever done something stupid with money raise your hand how many of you didn't raise your hand i have a problem with lying i didn't do anything illegal or immoral i didn't cheat anybody there was no fraud involved i just borrowed way too stinking much money and built a house of cards up to my eyeballs right here i just barely could breathe and one little ripple will take you out when you do that and that's what happened bank got sold to another bank and a guy into the city looked down said a kid 26 years old owes us a million two on flip this house before chip and joanna were born to tell you how i was making good money but it didn't matter that bank they called our notes because they were freaking out and uh second largest lender called our another eight hundred thousand we had two million do in six months and that started to crash that no matter how smart i was or how hard i worked or how brilliant i was i couldn't stop the crash from happening we spent the next two and a half years of our life losing everything we owned finally with a brand new baby and a toddler and a marriage hanging on by a thread we were bankrupt she's here today so you know we didn't get a divorce but sometimes we held on to each other just to get a better grip you all know what i'm talking about it was uh number one cause of divorce is money problems money fights money stress money arguments number one it was rough i remember standing in the shower with it as hot as i could stand it i was so terrified i'm 28 years old with little babies and i don't know how to be a man i don't know how to be anything and i would just stand there and cry you might be there you might be scared like that i understand i told you i met god on the way out but the interesting thing is i did get to know him on the way down so i had an i surrender all moment in the middle of all that i didn't just accept jesus as my savior then i decided okay god is going to be the lord of my life he's going to be in charge and since i don't know anything i'm going to have to read his love letter and try to figure out how to be a dad how to be a husband how to handle money how to be a leader how to run a business because i didn't know and apparently some of the stuff i had learned was wrong i mean i got to thinking about it who was it taught me to borrow money that would be my finance professor in college how wonderful borrowed money is and how it will cause you to build wealth and he was broke what's wrong with that picture a broke finance professor is like a shop teacher with missing fingers so i surrendered and i said god you're in charge tell me what to do how do you be married and i'm reading this and it says husbands serve your wives submit yourselves one to another this means i have to dry dishes my kids are like dad what's this rod stuff and i'm like come here baby i'll show you i've got seven grand babies now if i'd have known how great grand babies were gonna be i i would have been nicer to their parents but 2500 scriptures dealing with possessions and money how to handle them in a proper view of them 2 500. jesus in the new testament talked more about money in the parables and in his teachings yes they're metaphorical yes they're an analogy but he was actually using money to illustrate the point more often than he did love and grace combined is it because money's important no it's because it's attached to our heart in a wicked and weird and wonderful way that allows him to get his hands on our heart when we start talking about this silly subject called money and sharon and i decided we're going to handle money this way that was a long time ago i got great news at work we decided we're going to be married this way and that's a long time ago and i have great news to tell you it worked we decided we're going to raise kids that way and i have great news to tell you it worked i have three wonderful functional children who i actually like and they like me most of the time and that's weird i mean you know how many people are not in relationship with their own people you know and uh this gospel thing is real y'all it's very cool and i'm a practical guy i'm a kind of a business entrepreneurial guy right so i like stuff that when you do this this happens right i like it and that's how we've lived our lives and it's been really powerful i want to share with you five things before i do that i'll tell you that at ramsey we've got about a thousand fifty-four people working for us this week that's our current staff size and we've grown this wonderful business that god has enabled us to manage and grow and learn and it's out of control and i've had to learn how to lead at various levels and not be a boss but be a leader it's been an interesting process and i got a whole bunch of youngsters working on our team because we got a bunch of digital products and these youngsters are fabulous at digital stuff so i got a building full of 27 year olds and i love them they're passionate they're awesome but they do need direction i got one of them over here i come over here he's doing the stuff he's supposed to be doing wrong and i'm like hey look we don't do it that way ramsay i mean when you put a fish on the back of it you got to drive it right son this and this is how we do this and you got to do it this way and he's like yes sir yes sir i come back a week later he's doing it wrong again hey don't do it that way yes sir i come back a week later he's doing it wrong again like son we're going to set you free in jesus name okay you this is not working out i sign your check i'm like telling you what to do i'm trying to be gentle here but i'm getting ready to just tell you do this or don't stay i mean the rhythm this is crazy he looks at me and he says but i'm not like you. and i said you're correct i'm right and you're wrong you need to change see when we're doing something wrong in our lives that's hurtful to ourselves or to others not productive ineffective just wrong when we're going in the wrong direction god says hey stop don't go that way it's called sin it's an old-fashioned word people don't like talking about it anymore stop turn around go the other way change when you're going the wrong way doing something stupid stupid that's hurtful and harmful to you or to others it's not productive for your future it doesn't fit into your life vision you're going the wrong way and you stop and you turn in christianity we call that repentance i stop doing something that's not working i change so we're going to cover five things on how to handle money from the bible this morning there's 2 500 we're going to take five of them and if you do these five over the next 15 to 20 years i'll give you a 100 guarantee that to the extent you do them and no one can do them perfectly because we're all human but to the extent you do them highly engaged you will have unbelievable financial success and that's not a prosperity message it's like if you plant corn you're going to get corn baby that's all this is okay it's pretty simple and so you got to do them all though and you don't get to make it up it's not your book you're not the exception and you know i don't want calories care about your theory it's wrong to the extent it doesn't align with these five things you do these five things over and over and over they're gonna work i'll tell you this first one's live on a written budget write it down on paper on purpose before the month begins give every dollar a name every dollar and instruction jesus said don't build a tower without first counting the cost unless you get halfway up and you're unable to finish and all who see you begin to mock you and say this man began to build and was unable to finish it my friend zig zigler used to say if you aim at nothing you'll hit it every time winning is an intentional act a series of intentional act that the cumulative effect of those intentional acts over a period of decades causes you to stand on this gleaming mountain called success which is actually a pile of stupid stuff that you did that you're standing on this is what winning really looks like in the real world my friend john maxwell says a budget is people telling their money what to do instead of wondering where it went winning is an intentional act you have to engage over a long period of time in a series of behaviors that cause you to win in your marriage that cause you to win in your parenting that cause you to win in your leadership in your career it's not accidental malcolm gladwell says that people that are world class spend ten thousand hours at their craft brad paisley has played a guitar until his fingers have bled you don't get to be brad paisley otherwise peyton manning has watched film and throwing a football like no other human hardly on the planet that's how he gets to be peyton manning now they both did have physical and natural skills but they worked at their craft no one goes to the super bowl at the end of the super bowl ever someone won and the little reporter runs over to the football star and says how did you do it what happened and he never says i just i don't know i just got off the bus and this stuff just happened there was a plan that was executed over decades that caused you to be in the one quarter of one percent of the athletes in the world to play in the super bowl it's not accidental to win on paper on purpose before the month begins give every dollar a name on paper no i kind of got it in my head no you don't if you worked for a company called you incorporated and you manage money for you incorporated the way you manage money for you would you fire you don't answer that then when you got a game plan then we're going to get out of debt yes the borrower is slave to the lender we're in college and we bring sally mae into the family and she has to have her own bedroom for the next 32 years and then we get a master card who named that anyway the borrower is slave to the lender and then we get a car we can't afford because those people the stoplight have to be impressed wooden and then we buy a house we can't afford and then people come in my office after seven years of marriage and go dave we're a little stressed can you get us out i'm like yeah kim it's gonna hurt what do you mean we're gonna have to amputate the tahoe what do you mean you got a 830 car payment you make 62 000. have you lost your mind this is what goes through my head but i never say it quite that way because i was that guy i did it too but we decided to change you don't have to go broke like i did you can just decide i'm going the wrong way i'm going to get on a budget i'm going to get out of debt you can light some candles tonight gather the children around and have a ceremony called a plasectomy american distress discovered bondage what's in your wallet money you're weird yes and i'm not broke anymore 78 of americans live paycheck to paycheck they all look good but they're freaked out they're one pandemic away oh wait a minute we just did that from serious problems you don't have a credit card no i haven't in 30 years they wouldn't give me one to start with but later on when they would give them to us which is about 20 seconds after the bankruptcy we decided we don't borrow money anymore that's what jesus said i'm not borrowing money you're strange you're right i'm wounded i don't like pain i'm not going back american express calls my house it's a wrong number that's my wallet green president's faces four pieces of plastic two debit cards one on my personal one on my business and by the way that debit card will do everything it has the exact same protections that your credit card will do but you have to have the money oh there's that two debit cards and my other four pieces of plastic and my driver's license and my handgun carry permit um and so yeah i'm from tennessee y'all don't be scared but um avoid debt the borrower's slave of the lender the next one is kind of weird you need to foster high quality relationships whoever walks with the wise becomes wise but the companion of fools will suffer harm you become who you hang around with you talk like them you read the same books they do you end up sharing the same values you'll have a tendency to vote like they do you will do a whole lot of things like they do charlie tremendous jones used to say five years from today you'll be the same person you are today except for the books you read and the people you hang out with be careful who you hang out with you're becoming one of them we know this with our children that's why we don't let our children run around with little johnny the delinquent down the street because we know if they run around with little johnny there's a higher probability they become a delinquent than our child lifts little johnny out it's easier to pull down than lift out and little johnny's parents are not parenting for whatever reason the inmates are running the asylum so we don't let our kids do that so why do we do that if you hang out with people and say stuff like god it's friday oh god it's monday i hate my job i hate my wife i hate my life little man can't get ahead these people eeyore is their spirit animal if you hang out with them you're going to be one of them you'll catch yourself saying exactly the same things have a vision for your life and hang out with people that have a vision where there is no vision that people perish well you won't be when you grow up i don't care if you're 60 what do you want to be when you grow up what's the next stage look like be hanging out with people who are talking about that doing that that are well read that no i want to know the bible i want to hang out with people that know the bible better than i do i want to be compassionate and giving i want to hang out with people that are unbelievably generous they do generosity acts that blow my mind and i get to watch and it inspires me to do the same kind of stuff you're going to become who you hang around with save and invest in the house of the wise or stores of choice food and oil but a foolish man devours all he has wise people save money oil and choice food in the times that that proverb were written were signs of wealth wise people save money grandma said it she said save for a save for a visual aid it's going to rain it's going to rain well dave you should be positive i'm positive it's going to rain something's going to happen maybe it's not as dramatic or traumatic as a pandemic maybe it's just the transmission goes out maybe you just lost your good part-time job and that was how you were barely making it something's going to happen and you need some money to take care of you when that happens in the house of the wise or stores of choice food and oil and see if you get rid of the car payment it's easier to save because average car payments 526 over 84 months according to the national auto dealers association 526 dollars invested from age 30 to age 65 and a good roth ira and a good growth stock mutual fund will be around 5.6 million dollars i hope you like the car so you start saving and investing rather than keeping the banks open have you noticed their furniture is nicer than yours you paid for it it's time to get out from under the thumb of corporate america that owns most americans but we gave them our hands and said shackle me it's time to get out it's time to close up shop and end this thing now if you're on a plan and you said i'm going to change i'm going to save and invest i'm going to get out of debt i'm going to hang out with people who are compassionate and generous and saving and getting out of debt and are smarter than me and i'm going to become one of them if you're doing all of that the natural byproduct is number five is going to happen easily and quickly and that is be outrageously generous see when you've got some money and you and yours are taken care of it's easy to pop your little head up and start seeing the needs that are around you you know a thousand dollar car given to a single mom who doesn't have a car will change her life you know what you can do with ten thousand dollars you can do that ten times boom you could start tithing for the first time in your life it'll change your life you could start just catching people at the gas pump and helping them out you could do this i want you to do this on thanksgiving try this one catch catch you a place to eat that you don't really want to eat on thanksgiving let's call it denny's or something like that okay i'm not going to send you there for food okay but thanksgiving morning if you get the kids in the car and you're going to grandma's house for thanksgiving on the way i want you to stop by something like a denny's if you're doing thanksgiving at your house get the kids in the car go to denny's and then come back home and do thanksgiving you got to do this y'all so blow your mind pull up in front get to where you can see from the car the coffee bar in there where people sit at the bar to order fast quick food right i want you to jump in there run into the bar leave the family in the car you need to leave the car running and i want you to slip in there once you order a cup of coffee and i want you to leave about three of these uncle benjamin frank 100 bills under that coffee cup and then slip out make sure you can see make sure the kids can see kids get off your screens watch god's getting ready to show off you know who's working at a place like that on thanksgiving morning somebody needs a job bad life's not been good you don't end up here on thanksgiving morning otherwise this is not your highest and best calling as your career goal this is somebody's been stepped on kicked and beat on she'll walk up she'll see those 300 bills pick them up you can tell how tough her life has been because she looks and wonders if it's a trick it didn't occur to her that it was real and then it starts to process this just happened and 100 of times she'll then do this and then i don't know if she's three months pregnant or she's 62 with some lines across her eyes because the miles have been long i don't know if she was in church last sunday or and read your bible every morning or hasn't seen either one in decades or ever has in her whole life had any interaction with people of faith but a hundred percent of us have wired into our dna the ability to smell god's holy spirit and she knows what this smells like we all do she goes tears running down her face because it's been so long since anything good has happened thank you thank you god and you know it was god because you got to deliver it right you were the delivery boy delivery girl and the kids are watching this you just changed your family tree you start living a life like this but broke people can't do stuff like that so you gotta change you gotta change start living with intentionality with a budget you got to get yourself out of debt because you're giving all this to those goobers at citibank it's got to stop america we the people can change this toxic wicked culture when we get control of our lives and export it to others i dare you to have that much fun with 300 pastor and barbara and sharon i went for a really nice dinner last night it was probably around that much he paid for us i don't know but it was fun and the food was amazing and the fellowship was even better it wasn't as much fun as what i just described when you get to watch that lady oh man you get to watch that brother that's down on his luck and you lift him you pay that family's rent because they were servers and they were service industry people who got hit the hardest during the pandemic and you can walk over there and help them and and because you got your stuff together that's all this is good for it's all it's good for it's good for you to get you some stuff that's fine it's good for you to retire with dignity that's fine and it's good for you to bless other people that's all this is good for it has no other use it's not going to make you happy but done stuff like i just described oh that's a full and wonderful gospel life thank you jesus i'm so proud of y'all i'm so excited of what's going to happen and you have the opportunity to change god we thank you for these folks we thank you for this incredible church this pastor we thank you for their friendship their love father my extent my cost of humor is offended someone father remove that please and to the extent that i messed with somebody you keep messing with them father god we just are thankful for you and what you've done in all of our lives we're not transformed except by the renewing of our minds and father we thank you for that opportunity this morning in jesus name amen come on let's thank dave and really express our gratitude for his willingness to come serve us today [Applause] so two more minutes if we could friends this is it i mean now and change we can all do better we can all make some steps and god i thank you for the vulnerability and authenticity that dave has shared with us today and i pray that that would just catch fire in all of us give us the courage to take these steps so that we don't pass on to our kids and our grandkids and future generations the financial dysfunction that many of us have carried or the or the lack of education or the lack of skill that we needed and we pray that you will bless the slay the monster adventure for us in extraordinary ways in the weeks ahead as only you can do bless dave and sharon and their family and grandkids and their important work that they're doing to bless so many people thanks that they came to bless us today we pray in jesus name and for his sake and everybody
