Dartmoor Wild camping, Merrivale area.

[Music] how's it going there you go it is saturday the 29th of august and we're back while camping on dartmoor i've come down to the merryvale area today and it's a bit windy i wasn't expecting it to be this windy but um we had weather warnings in the week for thunder so i was going to come last night but they give like i say they give thunder um and the sun's out today so i thought i'd come down and dust the tent off and come out for a while camp yeah and just outside princetown in the maryvale area now i can see princetown aerial mass just over there and um fogging tall quarry and king's tour is down over there i'm going to make my way up to great staple tour now we're going to have a look at great staple tour um i think there's another tour on the way middle tour i think it is so yeah hopefully the wind dies down a bit i'll bring you along for the ride [Music] so just stood on top of a little staple tour now the views are absolutely gorgeous from up here um i won't turn you around and show them now i'll wait till we're at the top on great staple tour i hope you can hear me because it's very windy we'll make our way up to middle staple tour and then great staple tour now but uh yeah little staple tour it's not much to look at really but certainly got a nice view so let's keep on going up to middle staple tour [Music] [Music] um so if you can hear me that's a middle staple tour behind me there that's a bit more to look at a nice few rocks to explore and things and now in front of me this great staple tour so let's wander over there and have a luxury you should have a hell of a view from up there and also i've managed to find a good few flat camp spots up here as well so uh yeah things are looking good it's very windy mind but i'm not too far from the car if everything goes wrong anyway so yeah perfect [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so here we are on top of a great staple tour now and i'll pan you around and show you the view because it's just 360 views in every direction you can see way down to the sea over there and you can see all the way up to great lynx tour on the north more over there it's absolutely beautiful up here [Music] [Applause] another interesting thing about grace stapleton uh 90 this is true i'm not 100 so uh if i've got this wrong please somebody correct me i think the two bits of granite of the tour over there are the um the logo for dartmoor brewery yeah i think if you look on dartmoor brewery uh beers you'll see it's great staple tour on the front interesting fact [Music] we're leaving great staple tour behind us now i really enjoyed playing on the rocks up there um if you're into a clan braille rocks and having a bit of a play great staple tour is definitely the tour for you yeah really good fun in fact i think it's the most picturesque tour i've been to on dartmoor so far it's really nice up there and it's very accessible from the road as well yeah there's a really nice place to come for a day walk or it's perhaps a little walk with the family and that you don't have to walk too far and you get spectacular views leave a great staple behind us now we're going to go over to rue's tour have a look at roo's tour up there there appears to be a um flagpole on the top of roo's tour so we'll go and have a look at that i can see great miss tour over on the horizon over there i've still never been up greatness there's always a tour that i see wherever i go wherever you go you can see great miss tour forum can't you but nope never been up there perhaps that's one for next time so we've got a bit of a boulder field to clamber over now and we'll make our way up to rue's tour [Music] my [Music] yeah i made it over to roo's tour now it wasn't very far from staple tour two or three minute walk and uh let's climb to the top of there and i'll show you the views there's no flags flying today i don't know if this is in the uh maryvale firing area perhaps it possibly is because there's a flagpole at the top but uh i know they're not firing at all on the weekends this year so it should say especially on bank holiday let's climb up to the top [Music] [Music] so yeah i guess we must be just on the outskirts of the military firing area now but um as i say there's no flag flying so we should be fine today i just cannot get over how pretty it is up here have a look back at great staple tour [Music] it is absolutely beautiful i haven't even looked over this way yet let's go and have a luxury [Music] so yeah another big open expanse of moorland and this is looking up towards the north moore now so windy oh yeah i'm not sure if this wind is going to put an end to the camp tonight but we'll see we'll see we'll try and break it out i mean you never know it's a few hours till darkness now though it might die down a bit way off on the horizon there i'm pretty sure i can see great links tour i'll do a bit of shaky zoom see if you can just here shall we so yeah hopefully you can see that it'd be nice to link them all up one day and do a big uh north to south oh it's beautiful up here [Music] right so i had no real plan for the day i've made my way back over to great staple tour again now and it's only three o'clock so it's a bit early to set up a camp anywhere so way way in the distance over there i think that's cox tour so it looks a long way away but i don't think it can be much more than a mile at most so i might have a little stroll over to there i think it's called cox tour there's a couple of tours there so i'll get the map out and i'll tell you what it's called when i get there [Music] [Music] so it always amazes me how fast you cover ground up here i mean it's about i don't know five minutes at most not even that since i spoke to you last and i'm already well over halfway there so yeah to get all the way to that tour on the horizon it's only gonna take me about 10 minutes it's all uphill now so uh i'll catch you at the top [Music] well i've made it here to cox tour but as you can see there's a horrible thundery looking cloud out there i don't know much about the weather but probably pays not to be stood on a tour when there's a thunderbird cloud like that going over doesn't it the views from here are absolutely beautiful again i'll show you the staples where we were just at a minute ago so that's the line of tours we've done so far today already i don't know how far i've walked i don't think it's that far probably about four miles i would have thought but um yeah i'm gonna make my way back over to the staples in a bit now and um i'm gonna stop filming for a bit now and just uh enjoy some of my day without worrying about the camera and hopefully the wind dies down a bit and we'll catch back up later on i will get a wall cap going coffee time so back down at middle staple tour now and it has been blowing an absolute gale for the last hour but it seems to have calmed down a little bit now i've been in two minds whether to stay or go home but the sun's come out it's really nice again now and uh the wind is still strong but it has um it has weakened a little bit so i think i'm gonna stay to wish me luck i'm only doing it for your amusement yeah so let's sit down now join me coffee and uh i'll get the tent set up i can't see there's a big orange tent just been set up on top of um great staple tour at the minute so there's a few more people up here but i show you the little spot that i've got from a tent [Music] a lovely soft patch of grass so uh oh the wind's getting up again right we're doing it we're gonna stay [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so there's the lanshan one pitched in the wind it didn't go too bad really um it's still pretty windy and it seems quite taut but this will be a test of it tonight for sure um i've got the walking pole lifting the lifting the fly sheet off my head a bit again but uh am i 100 confident that the land chance gonna last the night not really um good to give it a test i suppose and uh yeah i've had to put a jumper on now it's getting a bit chilly as you can probably see the clouds are coming a little bit and the wind's still here so they give glorious sunshine first so perhaps it will all blow over in a minute but let me get some tea on now i've got another one of those adventure foods meals so we'll try out the new stove and um [Music] i'll let you know what the food's like right so on the menu tonight we've got the adventure foods pasta bolognese so i've never tried that one before and i've been boiling up the water for it with i've got the full bcb crusader cap system this time so inside the little bag is a sort of nesting cook system used by the military you get the osprey mug with the 900 mil and i think it's a liter it's over 900 mil or a liter osprey water bottle the crusader cup bomb proof i think it holds that's part of a liter anyway and the cooker so you can put um gel fuel or methylated spirits or fire dragon gel anything that burns really in the bottom there close the lid up crusader cup on the top and you're cooking so i've actually made a little burner to go inside this one so i'll show you it now i've made it out of a vaseline tub it works really well so here is the little stove i've made to go inside the bcb crusader cup it's just a uh a vaseline pot and inside there you've just got some um fire rope it's called it's just like a fiberglass rope that won't burn and uh i just covered the top of it up with some mesh there so that when you pour your methylated spirits in there it just doesn't burn so quickly so you get a bit of a longer burn time out of it and yeah that's enough to boil up a crusader cup lovely so just pull my mess on top of that put it in the bottom of the burner there light it up all right then so there we go i've got my little vaseline burner down in the bottom of the bcb cooker there i've filled water up to the second line in the crusader cup that should be plenty for one of those uh dehydrated mills so i'll light her up oh can i do it one-handed there we go lights nice and easily just about see the flame there and uh yeah give that a few minutes and she'll be boiling as you can see was that no problem at all and that cuts up to the second line so it must be i don't know it's over half a liter so we've got to fill this one up to line 10. give it a good stir tell you what this is a contender it's got peas and yeah pasta this one smells good right yeah here we go adventure foods pasta bolognese i say it every time i'm always amazed how much these things pop up like that's a big belly full of food we got there so like i say at the minute it's the pasta cabernet on the top spot [Music] oh my tell you what [Music] this looks decent that's good i'll show you a bit of a close-up you've got like pasta pasta beans tomatoey sauce and i guess there is some meat in it somewhere i tell you what [Music] well initial thoughts we got us as a winner [Music] well that's dinner dealt with and i'll tell you what we've definitely got ourselves a new winner that was delicious miles better than the pasta carbonara so uh i don't know how many more of these things i've got left to try but uh in a minute i struggled to see anything beating that i that was really really nice so um yeah the wind keeps picking up and then dying down and the sun keeps going in and then going out so i think we should be all right here this evening really it's uh yeah should be fine i don't know if it's going to happen or not but if we get a sunset here i think it'll be pretty spectacular so i've got my fingers crossed for that i've got the stove all set up so i might knock up a coffee have myself a little bit of a whiskey coffee i was gonna chill out here for a bit now so uh yeah if the sunset does anything perhaps i'll bring you back for that and uh yeah i'll catch up with you a bit later now it's chill time absolutely beautiful up there right well it's a little bit later on in the evening now got a whiskey coffee on the winds died down a bit and you can probably tell by the orange glow on my face something's starting to happen up there so with any luck that's going to be a gorgeous sunset i'm so glad i stayed now it's absolutely beautiful up there [Music] stunning [Music] so we're starting to lose light now rapidly uh see the moon up there see the moon i'm gonna get in the tent as soon as it starts getting dark now i'm not gonna stay up late tonight uh it wasn't an amazing sunset but it's still very pleasant um i won't catch back up with you in the tent tonight i'll say goodbye here it's been a really good day i really enjoyed clambering over the rocks this area of maryvale it really is pretty uh yeah i really recommend coming up to this place so if anything exciting happens during the night i was sure to bring you back but fingers crossed it doesn't and yeah i'll see you in the morning [Music] good morning that was a hell of a night um yeah it got pretty blowy last night i haven't had a lot of sleep from honest to three hours sleep i suspect i had but ah it's worth it in it when you wake up and look at your tent and look at the view i got this morning [Music] yeah makes it worthwhile doesn't it just being out of the tent um yeah it's pretty chilly up here this morning there's a bit of a nip in the air um yeah the wind's still up pretty good but the sun's shining um everything's nice and dry so i've got all this stuff laid out on the stone there and uh just gonna pack this flap intent away now [Music] do [Music] cheers all right so i've knocked up my morning coffee utensil packed away and uh i just got to pack my stove away get it all in the bag and we'll be out of there the little vaseline stove has worked an absolute treat really really pleased with that little vaseline burner the bcb stove yeah i can recommend that it works works very well i have done the unthinkable i do love my alcohol stoves but i've gone and ordered myself a jetboil since we're coming into the winter months it's going to get a bit windier and harder to use alcohol wouldn't it so i've turned to the dark side and ordered myself a jetboil so we'll give that one a test next time we come out so i'll get this coffee down mate i get the backpack on and we'll make a move [Music] what a way to start your day eh all right so there we go there's the area where i camped it's all packed away i've left no trace all my rubbish is in the bag and nobody would ever know i've been here yeah i've had a really good camp uh this is a lovely area around the staples as i say i can't do mid staple tour beautiful views up here um yeah i really enjoyed it it was a tad windy the whole time is still windy now but um yeah no very nice area i highly recommend it up here um i've got my bag on my back now and i've got a short like no 10 minute walk back to the car so that's it i'll leave this video here um yeah thank you very much for
