everybody and welcome to another darkest dungeon motto review my name is almond v and today we are taking a look at a brand new class just released called the apostate developed by the holy chicken and auntie with credit going to daughter of rainbows anonymous koala SAS red dye number five Oh nightmare Claire de Lune and all of the beta testers and wonderful folks over at the moonlit dungeon discord and I want to just thank Holy chicken on the onset here for reaching out to me directly about this project I'm grateful to have had the chance to access and integrate the private beta of this class into our current modded only Blood Moon run on Twitch we've had some really fun experiences so far with the apostate and now that I've really gotten good practice with it it's fair to say that this is something pretty unique the apostate basically functions as a high-risk high-reward utility class which utilizes antes heretic vestal skin and is themed around necromancy and low health utility so she's really designed to be a passable vanilla class which is sort of counter or mirror to the vessel in many ways in fact the first sentence on the mods steam page reads the narrow-minded fools refused to accept that the flame is only but half the story suggesting that she is indeed purposed to be the yin to the vessels yang a sister of battle with similar base stats cut from the same pious cloth but down a very different and darker path and the key to using and really having fun with his class is understanding that dichotomy that while the vessel succeeds at direct and AoE healing heroes to bring them back to life the apostate succeeds at empowering heroes who reside closer to death's door often bringing them closer with a lot of her own abilities and some fun and powerful necromantic abilities thrown into the mix now the description for this class reads denounced by the church for straying from the light these former vessels now seek out those texts declared forbidden and apocryphal in their search for the truth many questioned their morality but none doubt their tenacity the apostate acts is a formidable group leader who empowers allies as their wounds mount despite renouncing the healing practices of the vestal she still has the uncanny ability to keep others from succumbing to death albeit through very different techniques when provoked she is capable of unleashing power that devastates any who stand in her way and while the apostates comic-strip is still in the works what's outlined so far is the backstory of a woman named Dolores who really was a former vessel and pious sister attending a funeral with other vessels during which some of the vessels found the bishops secret key that unlocks a forbidden section of the church library wanting to know all there is to know about their faith vessels take advantage of the distraction and break into the locked section of the library in search of the truth the tomes they find there are unsettling and reveal new rituals and passages with dark implications however they believe that these texts are still part of their faith and should not be ignored so they commit themselves to attempting the rituals therein as night falls returning to the casket and dressed in hastily modified robes they begin the ritual and the corpse is reawakened a miracle they wonder the bishop entering the room at just the wrong moment does not think so and is horrified he raises the alarm and an angry mob quickly chases the apostates out of the town the apostates now believe that the light ie the church is teaching only a subset of the truth and that all aspects of the faith should be practiced together now on the road to the hamlet with their newfound apocryphal texts and necromantic power and a shared determination to wield it now when looking at the apostate we've already made several comparisons to the vestal and we're just gonna do that back and forth and if we just take a look at the snap a snapshot of the stats here let's just go back and forth here you can see the only real difference is the speed right here so this has just slightly higher speed and that is actually mechanically important for the way that she works around her utility and buffing allies in your group but should feel very much like playing a vessel however resistances are just slightly different these are slightly less across-the-board stun blight resist decent bleed resist but low moves stun blight decent disease resist whereas the vessel has actually slightly higher values here now before we take a look at each of her individual builders here I just want to point out a couple things in the first is that this is largely a utility class so much of what she has in her kit here is usable and flexible in a lot of positions and it's really purposed to buff and empower the rest of your group but that is dependent on them being below 50% HP so you're not gonna get a lot of value out of these if the members of your group are not below that 50% HP marker she does however have some pretty nice offensive abilities here which have some great utility and help actually get your heroes closer to that 50% marker and that starts with condemn which is a ranged attack usable in any position except for one it targets any enemy in any position is an accuracy based 90 - 60 % damage modifier plus 10% crit it will pull an enemy forward to positions and debuff them for - to speed and plus 7% damage received so next in is her group stress heal which is called last rites this will de-stress all heroes in the party for - for at level one but only half of that if the members of your party have hit points above 50% the next is one of her most important abilities called apocryphal texts this is only be used once per battle and it can be used in any position it is a free action so you can cast this once before casting any other ability it will buff all heroes in the party for plus 2% deathblow resist but if heroes are below 50% HP it will also give them 15% damage and 4% crit important to note here though that if you cast this and heroes are above that 50% line they will also suffer 2 HP damage which can actually help them get underneath that 50% barrier inspiration and improvement so the next in her kit is borrowed time usable in any position this Awards another hero in your party with one aegis block completely negating the next hit that they take it also cures them of any bleed or blight and buffs them for 15.8 death's door what has a one round cooldown the next is one of her most interesting abilities this is her kind of front-line aggressive ability tenebra city is a ranged attack usable in Rank 1 or 2 it will target all three of the frontline enemies accuracy base 90 damage modifier - 50% a [ __ ] modifier of minus 8 it has a low chance of 40% to stun any enemy that it hits it reduces your torch light by 5 the next time you cast it will do 33% more damage and then very importantly is this part down here when you cast this it D buffs the entire group for minus 25% healing received for a couple rounds and again they suffer two hit points if they are not already below 50% so then that brings us to her most interesting and probably most powerful core mechanic which is insight this can only be used in position three or four and this is the really important thing here it Awards another member of your team an extra turn gives them an extra action this round it also gives them seven accuracy and four crit if their hit points are below that 50% marker but it D buffs them for healing prevented minus healing received and plus damage received as well as dealing two HP to them if they're not already below 50% so just to recap this will take away her turn and give somebody else an extra turn as well as a ton of low health buffs and some pretty significant debuffs destroyed now we come to my favorite of her abilities just in style which is her corpse explosion desecrate can be used in any position it can target any position it will only hit corpses it clears the corpse in an explosion which reduces the torch by 5 and then blights enemies for 2 / 3 with a 60% chance to stun them with the shockwave this is how a life is taken so now that we know what each one of her abilities does let's just talk about general group comps and how to use her in the dungeon and that actually starts with condemn let's just point out the fact that condemn is a very practical ability with huge range you just can you just can't use it in position 1 but it essentially D buffs an enemy and pulls them forward that is fantastic in dungeons like the wheeled or the ruins where enemy positioning is far more important and you really care about getting to the backline now that we have that out of the way let's take a look at tena Barossa T now when you think about playing this character in a dungeon right you're thinking about the fact that a lot of its utility surrounds people being at low health so when you first start in a dungeon that's just not the case everybody's happy they're healthy they aren't diseased they don't have high stress it was perfect to start the apostate then in position to where she can still use condemn you no corpse explosion cures etc but she can really take advantage of tenebra city so you're starting the dungeon with getting a bunch of AoE damage and potential stuns out on the enemy team but you're also very importantly damaging across all heroes to HP every time you use it so after a couple battles likely somebody has gotten close to half health and all you need is one DPS preferably something like a bounty hunter to be close to half hell and now before the next combat you just switch out of everything move her from position 2 into position 3 & 4 so that you can start to take advantage of the abilities like apocryphal texts and insight so apocryphal texts now buffing the rest of the party as long as they are low health also a free action that is a battle long buff so you can cast this buff everybody in the group if they're low health they get 15% damaged 4% crit and then go right into insight useable in the backline and give one of those low health DPS an extra action this round as well as the powerful damage buffs if they're low health now let's just talk about the corpse explosion for one second desecrate is a lot of fun it is really powerful in dungeons like the ruins like The Cove where you know vulnerability to blight is far more significant however it is also an interesting opportunity cost because this ability sits on your bar and you can only use it if a corpse is available and many times that is only the most efficient if there are three enemies and one corpse and a lot of times you're gonna find that an opportunity to use this seems really fun and really valuable but it's ultimately better to go for borrowed time or to give somebody insight in that extra action or to continue to do damage with dinner prosody it's important that we just speak on the power of borrowed time for a second this is usable in any position and it's one of the most powerful damage negation spells that you'll see because not only does it cure somebody of bleeder blight which is huge damage negation but it also gives somebody an aegis block and that is just really purposed to allow her to function with characters close to her at death's door the ways you're gonna get killed are you reach that store then you get hit or you reach that store and you take a tick from a bleed or blight right so the fact that this negates all of that allows her then to really play with her mechanics and allow you to feel safer keeping characters at death's door or close in that buff range now after a lot of discussion with holy chicken the cooldown on this was actually just added and that was because my feeling is that just the ability to spam this is too much and when we played it on stream we did just kind of get caught up against a mini-boss that was very slow and hitting something very hard in the front line every turn so we were kind of just spamming this with her high speed and just negating those hits and that just didn't feel fun so I'm glad to see that this has a one round cooldown and this really is core to her kid and I think it's kind of mandatory to take along now in terms of her camping utility she has four unique abilities only and these are really themed around bringing people to that 50% HP and awarding them if they have mortality debuffs and that starts with dialogue with the dead time cost 3 this is a prevent nighttime ambush and awards 10% scouting for the next four battles but at the cost of 25 torchlight and it brings another group member all the way down to death's door and then heals them up 50% HP so there's this very important piece of text here which is added in the current version which says death storm a stress the party and the concept here is that you get a lot with this ability you get a prevent nighttime ambush you get 10% scouting chance and then you get to bring somebody in your party right to that 50% health marker so that you can really benefit from things like insight and apocryphal text etc so you're actually getting a lot of benefit there so the question is what is the cost then and three points is pretty cheap for all of what you're getting there but the idea then is that if you bring somebody to death's door you may incur a pretty sizable stress hit as well so this is still seeing some tweaks and balance and kind of being felt out but the goal here is really to be able to get somebody to death's door get them a mortality debuff bring them to that 50% now that we have given somebody a death's door buff we have will to live time costs to one companion if mortality debuffs +10 accuracy and 8 crit for 4 battles so again you can see the synergy here we've brought somebody to death's door we brought them back to 50% health we get a bunch of other bonuses and now we are gonna buff that character for accuracy and crit that then brings us to sustain flesh an expensive time cost 5 and that is because the entire party gets 10% max HP for 4 battles which helps to play around that 50% marker plus 15% prot if HP below 50% if mortality debuffs another 10% prot as long as they're below that 50% and if religous +7 stress so not really happy with the vestal and other religious classes but again buffing around that 50% marker and then finally an Orthodox ceremony time cost 3 all companions - 15 stress with a coin flip chance if religious of 20 stress if mortality buffs - 20 % stress damage received until camp so my guess is we will see these values change but I really do like the idea here I like that she is all about bringing people closer to death necromantic power and synergy and then if they do get to death's door and survive then you can go into a camp and start to buff them and give them some pretty sweet bonuses now in terms of trinka ting the apostate now it's it's worth mentioning that she has you know basically two primary ranged attacks nothing else that she does are direct attacks or are melee so you know giving her melee accuracy obviously not gonna do any things we're not thinking about warriors cap or anything like that I think if you're gonna play her aggressively most of the time up front using a lot of tenebrous 'ti using some background utility condemn etc it's worth actually thinking about giving her just direct damage just making her more effective at dealing out that AoE damage that just ramps overtime it's also really worth considering giving her the ancestors candles something that's just gonna give her speed her speed is already fairly high and that is again mechanically important because she needs to be using apocryphal texts and insight before the rest of your team moves and before the enemy moves that's really how her mechanics work so speed is going to be a good go-to for the most part I think though that ultimately it's going to be interesting to think about how you get other people in combination with her in your party right if you use the martyr seal 60% damage a death store credit death store etc plus 15% max HP this seems like you want to pick out a fantastic dps you know namely it's something like a bounty hunter and then really utilize them being at or close to death's door that 15% max HP and then giving them all those buffs and insight and just watching them go to town but I think it's gonna be more interesting actually to think about how you drink it the rest of the group with her giving them higher HP higher survivability dodge etc now she does however come with her own trinkets which have been pretty fun and actually we looted one of these and tried these live on Twitch the other night which was pretty excellent we're talking of course about the owl bouquet the apostate only desecrate 30% blights kill chance 30% blight amount 20% stun skill chance but reducing her speed by 3 so that set us up to allow other members of the team to get a killing blow produce a corpse on the enemy side and then get a huge amount of efficacy out of using desecrate there's also some pretty useful utilities stuff like mundane Scripture the apostate and only 25% stressful so getting a lot more value out of spamming last rites and of course she has a son word trinket and a crimson court trinket I'd love to hear in the comments below what you think about this class and what do you think the best group composition would be to play with or how do you best take advantage of a powerful DPS being close to death's door getting to turns and absolutely hammering the enemy team and of course I'll have a link to download this class just below the video remember that as long as you're playing on PC it is quite easy to install mods through the Steam Workshop all you have to do is head over there find the module oook absque Ribe to the mod and then boot the game and then head over here on the side of your save file to your mod selector and then make sure that you click in the one that you want make sure you pay attention to on the steam page of any of them require your mod to loaded in a specific order Congrats to the team behind this mod I think we are still just in the early stages of its release and we're gonna see some changes as things go on here and I'm excited to see that because this really is something that has a fun idea and is fairly unique we don't see a lot of deaths tour mechanic REE happening in this game and it's kind of fun and refreshing thank you guys very much for watching make sure to subscribe to the channel for more modded content and everything else darkest dungeon and of course join us on Twitch as we are playing this and many other new and interesting modded classes against all kinds of crazy enemies custom bosses the sunward Isles dungeon etc we are having a blast and we would love
