Matt Murdoch the Daredevil a character that has been requested a lot so you can calm your tits now here it is Daredevil brings so much Nuance to the religious character archetype religious characters are usually depicted as simple caricatures whose lives revolve around their religion but Daredevil humanizes religious people through his internal battle between good and evil he Str struggles to stay on a righteous path in a world that is constantly testing his faith the Incarnation of the character I'll be referring to in this video is of course going to be Ben Affleck Daredevil from the 2003 movie okay that joke was predictable obviously I'll be talking about the version from the R-rated director's cut of the 2003 movie oh brother this guy stinks all right I'll spare you the shitty jokes you are already know which Daredevil I'm going to be talking about before we begin let me just quickly plug my stuff my name is Imran and I make video essays on masculinity if you like this sort of stuff then be sure to subscribe and like the video because I have a long list of videos on the way I also have a patreon if you're feeling generous and want to support a small YouTuber thank you and now without further Ado this is Daredevil and masc Ulin when Matt Murdoch is fighting crime as Daredevil he follows a certain rule he does not kill what I find interesting about Daredevil is the fact that this rule exists because of his Catholic faith Matt's belief that everyone has the potential to be redeemed is rooted in his religion therefore he refuses to kill criminals no matter how heinous the crime we really get to see Matt's reasoning for his no kill rule during his rooftop conversation with the Punisher Frank Castle AKA The Punisher this is a character that is grounded in reality unlike Daredevil he doesn't wear a fancy costume and he doesn't have any super senses he's just a man who has experienced a lot of suffering his realism reflects on his philosophy on killing criminals the brutal reality that perhaps not everyone deserves forgiveness and Redemption during their conversation Daredevil almost has this childlike innocence when he argues for The Punisher to not kill his argument stems in the belief that there is potential for good in everyone this argument is hard to take seriously for someone who lives in the real world like The Punisher but their devil also lives in reality what about Hope [ __ ] want talk about Santa Claus I live in the real world too I've seen it he too has also suffered a lot as a child his mother abandoned him and his father was killed by criminals as an adult many people have died under his watch however he is still hopeful in the world and its people he sees hope forgiveness and Redemption as all grounded in reality because bad people can be forgiven and they can change if given the chance what have you Redemption Frank is real and it's possible the people you murder deserve another chance reality is what you make of it it doesn't have to be dark and hopeless Matt Murdoch is a man who has seen a lot of dark no pun intended but still chooses to see the light perhaps there exist truly evil people who are lost causes but even they should be given the opportunity to at least try to be better throughout the show we see Matt struggling with his faith and thus struggling to adhere to the no kill rule during season 3 of the show Matt and sister Maggie have a conversation about the biblical story of job job was a devout believer of God his faith was continuously tested through the suffering he experienced the main hardship being the death of his many children despite the this he still maintained his faith in God and refused to curse him when explaining the story of Job map distinctly says that it was God who killed job's children and he is technically correct since the biblical God is all powerful and has absolute control on who lives and dies but it was actually the devil who directly caused job's children to die I think it's interesting how Matt chooses to blame God rather than the devil he is choosing to see the bad in God and rejecting the good Matt also misses out the key detail that job was eventually rewarded for his faith with his fortunes being restored and his wife bearing new children as he struggles with his faith he struggles to see the light the pillars that make a man are his values and beliefs as he loses sight of them his world view begins to turn dark instead of seeing job as a faithful believer you know what I realized job is a [ __ ] I'm not a Christian and I'm obviously not trying to spread the gospel the values that make man don't even necessarily need to come from religion the point is that when the foundation for your morality and character start to crumble it becomes easier to succumb to evil and this is what happens to Matt as he slowly turns away from his faith he begins to consider killing Wilson Fisk putting a permanent end to the man who has brought so Much Death fear and corruption in the city of New York you know you're one bad day away from being me sticking to your values and beliefs in the worst of days demonstrates a considerable amount of strength everyone has moments of weakness during season 3 we see Daredevil fantasize about killing Fisk and his morals are truly tested when he's given the chance to do so he was strong enough to brutally beat up Fisk yet his ability to restrain himself from killing him was truly Mighty especially in his state of Fury [Music] strength and masculinity are usually defined by physical characteristics who can hit the hardest who can lift the most but true strength and masculinity is power over one's self staying true to your values and not letting outside circumstances shake your character kill me God knows I want you but you don't get to destroy Who I Am the world constantly tests Who Matt Murdoch is it pushes him to his moral boundaries yet when he was given the ultimate test the opportunity to slay the man responsible for so much evil he refused Fisk is the devil testing Matt's faith and Matt is job forgiveness and wishing Redemption on others is easy when they're not heinous manipulative crime bosses like Wilson fish but when they are it can truly test your convictions and even how you view Humanity Daredevil faces a monster and Spares his life this is an act of forgiveness and to forgive a monster requires courage this is masculinity counsel me to transcend my fears to be brave enough to forgive and see the possibilities of being a Man Without Fear
