I'm also a massive F1 nut and Daniel is probably my favourite F1 driver from the current grid.

I had no idea this bromance was a thing (or why/how it started), but I'm absolutely here for it.

Massive F1 fan. Love Daniel Ricciardo. He always seems like he is having a fun time and just makes everyone laugh. Had no idea Michael and Daniel were close friends.

[Music] hello everybody welcome to episode 9 of this sky f1 vodcasts and on a Friday got something a little bit different for you all the way tuning in wide from his farm in Perth I would like to say ghost 17 Crabtree winner and Renault driver Daniel Ricciardo Daniel hello and alongside that we've got Manchester United legend and total petrol head Michael Carrick Michael welcome well I've really appreciated joining myself an acidly Pinkham today let's start with you though Daniel how are you how you keeping how's the farm and you doing any shearing straight to it admitting questions I'm doing really well I think especially for the situation right now I'm certainly as well as can be and yeah the farms good I fear if I stay out here too much longer though I'm I'm set like I'm never leaving here I feel like when I go back into a city and see us at the traffic lights I'm gonna freak out or something so but no shearing yeah most hearing I was going to do some the other day and let's say the the professional was having a bit of a hard run so it wasn't it wasn't the day to do it what about you Michael what do you been up to same as most I don't live in a place that's half the half the size of Australia's Dan's farm so we've got my bucket I just got the back garden to playing with the kids but similar really first few weeks being homeschooling with the children they're 10 and 12 so been been looking after them trying to off and apply them as well and yeah I mean being on the outside not using the shops not even doing anything few runs trying to keep fit trying to keep active a little bit for my own sanity really and getting out and about but yeah just just apply it really is enjoying the quiet ladies as much as we can trying to make the most of what we got because I don't really get that like Danny said you don't really get the opportunity to switch off and informally to spend time with the family as I have so it's in some ways as as it's sad in this terrible situation is when she's trying to make the most of all being given with because we were saying that we know you a massive petrol head we've seen you at loads of concrete over the last few years and initially that was when Danny when you a red bull right is that how you guys first got to know each other yeah was Monaco I think Monaco might have even been Monaco 2016 through it and he helped me through it was it was 2016 when it was I remember little obviously the Saturday after qualifying that being on the energy station and it was an amazing feeling after I'm on going you came back on back to the engine station down and he came back in the reception he got from everyone was amazing so Stan that was pretty special to be to be part of obviously Sunday was was it this appointment but uh well you're easier to talk about that really well I think it was I I remember more clearly Sunday night I think that's that's where we we found ourselves in the same restaurant with yeah a couple of some fluids some fluids like say I'd rate probably more so than yourself I am recovered from it was was was impressive the disappointment and obviously I suppose it's one of the biggest disappointment you live at really in your career but the way you dealt with it was what was was pretty impressive not so much that we had a good time that night on the next day not so much now but I mean personally how you are you cold with it because I can only imagine what it must have been like so there pleasure for that you've been comparing the two sports just tell us about that yeah I'm currently doing my pro license which is the kind of the final leg area coaching budge to become kind of coach manager and we've got to do a research study which I was in the news and this time really to kind of get finished in doing so I I asked Daniel to pick his brains and I said would be ten to fifteen minutes around it about an hour and fifteen minutes questions but actually was it was quite interesting it's I think when the more we splice motive four or five different portsmen and it's quite interesting when he starts being three children going to a little bit deeper in the details of you know how you see this ball and little situations and the mindset and the mentality and that kind of thing that there's a big crossover and I found out quite interesting so probably bought him for about an hour the other day but I found it interested anyway make yeah absolutely that's that's what I think a lot of us kind of get we get a lot of kicks out of speeding to other other sports sports people really and finding like correlations between you know football and motor racing you know two completely different sports yet actually you know that the deep you dive into it there it is that's quite a lot in common and I think you find that with so many sports so you know and for me to obviously chat about that to Michael boots we've been been there and done at all it's it's it's cool it's cool to have that conversation and he says he kept me for over an hour but I was more than happy that some of that conversation I'm obviously do you know what was interesting though so you jump in there was interested is the crossover from the sport of really beat down we just loved this ball were in you know it's the appreciation of like the cat-and-mouse kind of won't be wrong we've talking about the overtaking and stuff like that and we both and I was trying to explain what it was like for me when I make a passport not necessarily the spectacular one that everyone recognizes what the little one of like kind of you appreciating for your craft of someone you've set something up and you can't get one over on someone and that little one inside you that cozy ya know about we were talking about that Danny run really kind of little air the same so it's that appreciation sometimes of you sport that's quite runs quite deep and that it's probably the love of the sport rather than the glamour is spectacular of all the surrounding that every time I spoke to someone about in Danny in particular was right yeah that's me that that's when a later when I get someone and upset them up and I would take them and that's like the beauty of wirings competition so think zoom think all of us to keep this conversation going and to talk about these transferable skills between sports is actually really useful use of your time at the moment and but just tell us Michael how you first got into motorsport because I know you've loved it for a long time having the of entire lawn enjoyed watching enjoyed watching it as a kid to be honest just did one ball got in the way lot so I didn't get to see al awful lot on TV but always always enjoyed watching it when I could I went to my first Grand Prix I think so then I got 2002 and then ever since then I've just tried to stay involved in trying to get as much as I can obviously I'll calendar and schedule only allows I was going over the year to kind of June June the only one so when was the last one I can squeeze in a nostalgia live but other than that the rest of the year is pretty much a write-off but I always keep Cubs on it and watching my song is the same he's taking all when I only know that he's been watching the e virtual what he's been what you know he's been boggling for that so I'm yeah he's a huge fun yeah beautifully I love Jim the house he sits down it even watches reruns of replays and Grand Prix's just he just loves it all the details at all the little things are he picks I was quite interesting but yeah he's a big fan of done order don't you tell me we had Carlos sights on here the other day I mean it's the different levels of frustration amongst the drivers that you know we still don't know when we're gonna get going we're hearing a little bit maybe we might get going behind closed doors in Austria your side little beer on the other side of the world on your farm although from everything at the moment yeah it's amazing we until cows and sheep and have the hearings really good but you know I I'm hearing I guess similar things you know it's it's there's obviously you know first season to happen you know given the right circumstances and if that means some of it'll start up it it's behind closed doors yeah I mean from my side so so be it you know that's as as a competitor and you're not racing since you know November December all I want to do right now let's go racing so as soon as they they say we're we're all clear to go of course with a crowd it's nice but if if we can still race without then I'll take that any day talking of sheep-shearing have you been cutting your own hair Michael what do you think it's actually my wife it's not my love Kiki I might stick with it a bit shorter now now I've seen it like this it was a bit of a shock to start with it's a lot easier any way to deal with I'm not the only one I think I'm not the only one and I've seen a few pictures of a few nothing about Daniel just take us back to t to your younger years because it's quite unusual in many ways for a kid to get into motorsport where you grew up you know there's other sports that would definitely lead the way cricket Aussie Rules rugby league rugby union why did you get into motorsport so young i Alliance I was always fascinated with the speed you know and I loved I guess going fast you know that was my first passion was you know whether it was riding a bike down a hill or whatever I loved that feeling of speed and the sound of the wind running you know through your hair or into your face and I don't know just that whole that whole concept so I was drawn to just wanted to go faster and faster and yeah then the racing cars of it also seemed quiet of a quite of like against the heroic kind of sport and and there was that element the coolness about it and and the danger and all those kind of variables which make up the sport that it is girls are strongly drawn for that did you have heroes that you wanted to emulate i certainly looked up certainly looked up to the people other drivers and athletes from a driving side i mean the obvious ones and you know the sentence and when the Schumacher's but you know I it wasn't just Formula one bond on you know those Dale Earnhardt from NASCAR he was called the Intimidator and I heard I loved that you know it's I think it's well because it's I've always been like a pretty easygoing kid you know like the nice guy but when competition comes into play you know I'm far from that person and though yeah I like having that little bit of a switch kind of personality in a way when you know when the helmet goes on or when it's time to go what about you Michael when you first got into Formula One who've been your heroes over the years and the drivers that you've followed and you know but where did it sort of come from that love of most sport much away it came from to be honest an answer for what Mansell probably was monster then going into dearmond they don't have to be not really any real standouts but I just love watching it just the appreciation for speed and obviously the footage wasn't what we get now but seeing them on boards in the center from Monaco that the famous ones from just got ppreciate for precision I think that speeds something that I also um yeah just as it well I just enjoyed it I've never really had to stand out and obviously getting to know Daniel a bit now it's one of our following and support or in a book other than I just it was just a general appreciating for this at all and the speed and the danger as well especially in the earlier days for me you know I've often wondered what football would be like if you could have team radio if we could just hear you all talking probably bit too much swearing but Daniel your little diary piece I'm looking forward to reading those going forward and and actually loved the fact we had a couple of Sky f1 key knows in there JB and pulled arrestor that made the cut of your like all-time well underrated drivers what inspired you to write that auditor was yeah I guess you know like making the most of some time and yeah trying to get a little bit creative and bill bill some of this this extra time we got now on that yeah it was the idea was brought to me and it was like okay this is no one's really ever I don't think ever talked about it at least from a driver no and we'll know who's good and whatever but who maybe was good but didn't get you know the light shining on them as much and our anyway to be honest I just I did it and I'll send it out and yeah it got a lot more awareness than that then I thought it wouldn't so that was nice yes so we'll see we'll see what's gonna what's gonna happen next I don't a bit about overrated drivers but I'll certainly hold off on that one till I'm a bit older and care a little less the conversation I'm gonna hear and this was on your list of the underrated ones yes so there was so the I I did the top formats a five um and it was just specifically f1 so drivers I'd driven against in nf1 so some of those were in junior categories but they eventually got to f1 so it was Marcus Ericsson Jill Bianchi Jenson Button Roberto Mary and Tony little bitsy dumped on you know et and then I threw I threw beaker and varistor in there Paula like that that was very good of you and we've also we've been asking the fans to get questions in Daniel and both of you obviously you know with regards to transfer talk Michael this is something that you've had to put up with wrap your career I'm score and and Daniel a lot of the questions are surrounding me now because you're out of contract with men of at the end of the year and are you having conversations again or bit from the farm over there in Perth would you rule out a return to ripple is one of the most common questions I think that's been popping up okay that's Wow I actually haven't really been asked that one what I will laughs you know back to Red Bull I guess to answer it you know no like I think one of my something I've learned growing up in general on a dis through life is never say never know and never completely disregard something unless it was you know prison or something that you really don't want to go back to but no you know never say never it is hard it is hard having chats right now in terms of because we haven't had you know read Estella if nothing's really happened I normally chats start to come off the back of you know races and results and momentum so there's there's honestly not much to talk about for now it's it's more just current situation and on the rest of them and how we're going to deal with it but yeah it's it's all pretty slow and steady I mean you anything to pray love you everyone knows how good you are thanks Pink's Thanks I'm getting Jack down on the farm but ah well that's got anything to do with it say you judged on your last race but we don't have that at the moment and it's difficult to judge you on some of the races in the Renault last year but you can fall back on that on that's not long enough list of wins but you've got fair for you under your belt from Red Bull so do you feel confident that you could jump to another team if the offer came I'm I think Tim kind of team maaan relate unrelated what's the word like yeah the coat the thing I'm trying to say is I what I've done in the past I certainly 100% know I can do again and I think this time out of the seat you know even more so like I started my my pre-season training already a bit earlier this year because I was kind of phoning at the mouth and then no so now having this extended break yes not that I needed any red lighted fuel for my fire but it certainly just made me so so hungry and I'm you know at a point now around starting to watch some old races and whatever yeah one I want that feeling again absolutely so this has been good for me you know how do I know you did the same cool with the whole squad the whole mine she's not just cool before you talk to us how do you keep sharp keep fit and keep tracks on what everyone else is doing at the moment because you know you don't know when you're gonna go back but you've it's kind of like being a super sub isn't it just waiting on the bench for the caller and being ready when it comes that's a difficult one I don't think right way to go at the moment you know it's all kind of trial and error and kinda planning and hoping we're doing the right thing it's difficult when you haven't got there towards something you know you're kind of normally our trainings and our schedule all the lads go away for for this summer break and they come back with the dead knowing that that's when we start training together like then and see him start and that's obviously yeah it's an obvious thing for me to say but not having the day and not having something to work towards managing the training and the training law is tricky so I'm there's a little bit of blend between dick and Oliver and maintaining and obviously doing what they can't do not some boys who've got some facilities some some haven't got that and obviously some of the younger boys in this squad I've got different facilities to some of the ones that may be a little bit more money and they houses and gyms and what have you so that creates with the challenge as well is trying to gauge it some change some some we've taken the decision to come off it and give him a few days off and and give him a week down week because he can't keep going and going and going away and you know and we've got Gabe so it's managing the load and managing managing the mind a little bit as well and then the mental state as well enough to keep going but at the same point not burn out for a tribute it is trigger Mike Michael you took him out there about what you love in particular and the thing that connected you between you and Daniel is just being in the moment of being in the sport and admiring when he's setting somebody up for an overtake and one of the questions are another question we had from Tom a over Twitter Daniel you've had time to think about this you maybe this can be your next list for your diary your best dive-bomb overtake of your f1 career and he's given you a few I can't remember offhand I can remember the China 2018 more but he's gone hungry 14 ones are 17 or back ooh 18 there's you agree saying that's how you do it baby yeah I think the month of 17 I think that was on bought ass from from memory I think what that's all maybe Jimmy but yeah but I know month ones has probably been that my breeding ground for like the longest lunges you know from as far back as possible yeah into turn one I've come from you know another postcode I feel the time so yeah mine's a month or ten one's been a good month for me but the hairpin we've seen quite a few of you guys doing it there that is he's one of the best places to go late on the brakes and go very deep sorry mate I missed the first part when was that about China as well in the hairpin you know you quite often you see people going for miles away don't you look really late break it back yeah yeah it's you know some circuits certainly open themselves up for the bigger opportunities and yeah I mean that's that's like the part of the sport which is you know that's where the competition comes into it like yeah winning is the best feeling you know crossing a lion first but you know at times a pretty close second is putting an awesome move on someone and having a race which is full of attacking and overtaking and setting someone up and you know what what I guess viewers probably don't always see or know is like there's a lot of sometimes it might be on an indistinct and it might happen at a good second decision and then a gap opens when you go but what are the time you're setting someone up you know through a lap before three laps before and you're trying to in a way create an opening to what you're doing in their mirrors how do you do that just just for us laymen and those that are just watching on an admiring it and you how do you go about setting someone up without giving too much away here but you know is he you have different ways of doing it for different drivers for example you can normally see you can normally see a little bit how they are driving in terms of how rattled or not they are or you know in terms of they might start to make a few more mistakes and you might start to calculate okay then this this corners giving them some difficulty so I'm gonna keep pressuring in this corner but maybe that'll open up an opportunity in the next corner or things like this so yeah I don't want to give too much away I think amongst us races like we've obviously got a pretty good idea you know what we're talking about and what we're doing but uh yeah I don't know I love like little mind games and those battles no that's that's for me like a big chunk of the fun oh and just how much of a buzz is when you pull it off cuz it is something that you're famous for yeah that's that feeling is like it's a feeling of it honestly the feeling of powerful you know it's a feeling of like yeah I I just I had you and uh yeah I don't know I've always been a competitor as a kid with anything you know from video games to table tennis or I've just always had had that and yeah I think as well you know to be able to do it on like this level you know and go against drivers from all over the world who all think we're better than another you know so when you do someone in that moment it's a it's a feeling of yeah you feel like you can flex on them a little bit is there a normative question for me is there an overtake the what what stands out that you shouldn't have done that you shouldn't really have done and you there's no way you should have pulled up where you pulled it off is the one that's does that make sense is the one that stands out like that we're not the obvious one but it's one where yeah you shouldn't you shouldn't be going down there but you actually made it stick [Music] I mean if one that comes to mind was in Monaco on give me in 2015 I had to I had to feed him a little bit of a will but so I guess that said it should have really been done in terms of there wasn't really much room but I I did what I had to around that track so yeah you go to one yeah I guess in a wave like bending the rules in some circumstances and that's what what's required there so they push the boundary they tell you what Daniel something that we're all really looking forward to seeing is your battles with esta Bano con because you know he's clearly a great race a lot of speed you know it's a tenacious thing and he's obviously hungry to get back into the sport it's disappointing we haven't seen it yet obviously but have you been have you had the chance to sort of get to know him have you been in contact with him how much contact if you got with Cyril how's it kind of working with the team yeah I'm looking forward to it you know I think whenever you have another teammate you know a new teammate it's certainly a new challenge it's a new obstacle is it's a new way or another way to learn and improve the craft because every driver has a different driving style you know everyone has their strengths and weaknesses so you know 22 races a year there's no driver that is better than his teammate on every lap on every corner of every circuit you know so you you're naturally going to have an area to to improve or or find something so that's always exciting I think you know in testing in testing I think overall a lap time at the end was times were pretty close so yeah I know he's going to he's going to bring some competition absolutely and yet up until I guess the end of testing and that you know relationship is good but yeah we got to see what happens through it through competition but I certainly want to I want to get that Garmin yes everyone as well see how that plays out he said on first beating you as a teammate you hit water bottles by accident it's really true to that story but um it was definitely i'ma men throwing something yeah I don't know I think we're in the factory and I don't know if I want to say it just missed him or like I was throwing it to someone else and they didn't catch it in a anyway it wasn't intentional but he knew they were but he probably went home he gonna be careful yeah just just think back to Brazil with him a Mac so there you go careful around list about Michael a couple of questions in actually again from Tracy just to finish off with and you beat your silverstern we've seen you I've seen you at Monaco which circuits are next that's made you King and the other one from will Langham the worst and best drivers in football with all those flash cards oh yeah well Montreal was a good one I went to I went to when Jensen one actually 2011 pick one and that was that was a good thing that was a good weekend yeah it was an incredible day one I want we're being Barcelona yeah I'm gonna call I want to go spa really want to go spa and I'd love to go Singapore as well but for different reasons I think that the kind of the electricity in the atmosphere around Singapore when you see the pictures and the footage of it is special but I'd love to got this born and say I'll Rouge really interested in flying up the hill see you actually camping and going in one of the hot tubs with all the Kimi räikkönen fans you want to say that they say you know I would you know I would I would go and do it do it that way I'd love to do it properly or one day I'm I will get around to it when when the schedules allow ah oh yeah I managed to do the f1 experience actually a couple years ago to Austin in the car and that to see a may that's when my my appreciation for you you drive we've done man oh my goodness the forces housing a little bit when that was all yeah do you know what I was - I took me a briefing note to stop me from coming forward I would determine because it's a big cushion on the thing in front of me and I was determined not to hidding because they were saying everyone goes forward hitch and I was determined but I had everything pressed against the foot the foot world could stop me and from I'm flying forward but I leave you right what an experience sorry New Jersey Patrick pre saga I'd listen you you've dodged the question about the footballers oh yeah who's good and Bob the underwear Louis Saha used to think he was a bit of a racer he had some funky cause he had some McLaren DTM car that you put on the road Wayne was the same a he's got some cars over the years who's the worst driver Ronaldo crossed crushed he Ferrari once and in woman's love airport tunnels a few years ago I'm not actually been in the car and what I don't know I can lose the worst one not really been seen enough yeah I'm not I seen enough to really call someone out as yeah I mean you talk about doing track days and I mean it'd be great to get you in a two-seater with Daniel at some point that could be something we could we could set up if you're gonna get out to one hopefully later in the year but is that something you consider Daniel going scared of the backside of pretty I'd love to the only thing I can see I can see all your reactions the facials will be unbelievable maybe one thing that struck me like whenever we've done features and stuff we remember doing that that that some sand buggy feature lasers with the two Mercedes boys when Nico was still with Luis at the team and what struck me is no sense of Jeopardy like they've got no sense of danger like off the track and I think you're you know pretty fast driver on the normal roads I mean safe but you you've got an awareness and a safe awareness of what's going on around you who is terrible because I guarantee there's a few onto the roads if you're not aware of the suspension and the capabilities of these broadcasts but these boys are because they I took him down to Goodwood when Jackie will let me that f-type and it was just the most beautiful car it was like a rocket and Brundle couldn't believe that they'd entrusted me with this such a high-performance vehicle anyway I was obviously pulling along sounds good with it with Johnny in the passenger seat you wait I've had enough of this Pinker's we're swapping over I could not believe how about man drove I'd only get him into trouble but you should be anyone else we're going back to that question you can ask that sorry I said that one for you Daniel no right the true answer a Lance for the kind of the first part of the awareness in that and done one one thing we we do do and I think it's probably just we learned through the speeds that we drive on the track is you're you know you can't afford to look five meters in front of you because it's gone in an instant you know so you're constantly looking you know hundreds of meters down the road so you know like I think a lot of people and it's just because it's just I haven't learned that skill driving on racetracks probably but yeah you look you know always just too short in front of you so something comes out that can surprise you or catch you off-guard with you know where we're looking so far ahead and I think that's where we get this awareness and understanding of what's happening and then all that sort of stuff so that's something we learn on the track which certainly gives makes it I think a bit safer for us on the roads to predict some situations or will read some situations I don't know I guess it would max like I don't think max knows how to drive what do you say sticky like manual [Music] there's no action instinctive so I think that surely must know out the driver mind you will surely come back this stuff and what's about it maybe now there was a time where he had his racing license but not a driving license on the Dutch roads wasn't there yes yeah that's that's crazy and in terms of like to comprehend that yeah he's able to drive during 50 kilometer race cars but ya can't get in a road car but yeah that's that's how it is that's how it is it's it's unique but yeah it probably makes that was surprising otherwise I'm a pretty cool person do I reckon you know what's good you know the headline that's gonna be taken from this now 30-bed you Daniel Ricciardo accuses max just a fan of being unable to drive a manual car I prefer driving a manual driver and I'm not to show my age me I'm not a problem generation maybe master too young for me they really appreciate it thank you so much for coming on and sparing an hour of your time to to talk to us about all things f1 and before we go Michael you know obviously stem and staying safe but you know plans for football they're obviously trying to form some sort of plan along the lines of a bethe one that's that's I suppose what all the fans want to hear is just you know approximately I think they've got a plan for approximate surviving yeah I think it just keeps getting pulled back Simon to be honest it's difficult it's difficult to commit to anything I think in some ways we're sitting like everyone else just waiting the pictures changing almost daily weekly so yeah like come back what we said before we're just trying to prepare ready to pull the trigger to be ready to go yeah other than that same as everyone else hoping that it'll be sooner rather than later but at the same time appreciate enough this is a situation and we got to do what we got to do and thank you say stay home stay safe and protect each other I think absolutely in the meantime Daniel it's what I kind of tractor and training hard I should imagine yeah pretty much it's it's actually been a really good chance to train them I have a schedule which allows us to be on the same time time we're long period you know I'm not deal with jet lag or fatigue from you know 100 flights or something a year so you know just making the most of it and sustained review know the fact that you out the cost was so long would it take you a little bit long to get used to and that rustiness about footballs a little bit like that sometimes it takes you a few games to get up to speed would it would it be that old you literally jump in a cornfield a long straightaway what is your next challenge with Marcus Steines and Scotty James I don't if you've seen these lasers and Michael but they've been doing some interesting challenges to keep themselves occupied that's a question how many times how many ticks was it when you had when you threw it over the tree to get in the booth at a car how can I forget its recycling tonight come on be honest yeah let's say it wasn't the first take did you puke up after drinking the raw eggs did you alright so I missed that one I the boys the police drank and I faked it like did the whole over-the-shoulder thing no I it looked more obvious but apparently not because even Marcus was like that easy I was like anyway anyway hey Rosa yeah that one weight with alcohol tequila egg yeah yeah tequila shots no thanks but we'll see the next one will do saying tomorrow we
