the flooding catastrophe in Iowa and the dangerous heat blanketing much of the US let's get right to meteorologist Samar Theodore tracking it all Samar good morning good morning that's right so we have seen substantial flooding along with the record-breaking heat let's go ahead and take a look this morning a disaster emergency in the Heartland following catastrophic flooding in Iowa 21 counties virtually underwater following massive rainfall which appears to have blindsided many residents early Saturday now forced to be evacu uated drone video capturing the aftermath of the torrential downpours in Sue County the water submerging homes as rescue crews scramble to reach stranded residents things have been changing along the big suo this is New Territory for us Governor Kim Reynolds looking over the floods from above the flooding part of a wild start to the summer season I think I've had enough cuz it seems like it's rained about every day for the last two weeks so I'm ready for it to dry out a little bit hail and more heavy rain batt ing the southern Us New Mexico Texas and Florida facing strong storms all the rain coming as more than 100 million Americans coping with scorching temperatures the I95 Corridor baked the heat is just unimaginable temperatures in the nation's capital hit 100° the first time in June since 2012 it's very hot it's too hot and to think cities like Washington DC not anticipated to see much in the way of relief today if you look you can see all of the major heat we're experiencing today is really in the I95 Corridor that's where we could see extreme long duration events overnight heat not much relief in the way of that Tallahasse could heat hit a heat index value of 112 degrees today that's how hot it could feel where you're seeing the red boxes that is where we have the potential to break records but notice how in Philadelphia on Monday we cool down just a hair a few degrees why is that when we have a round of storms coming in and while they will help to cool things down at 5:00 p.m. uh we could see some severe weather in part of New England anything from damaging winds to tornadoes is possible in the Northeast this afternoon Gio yeah just so hot out there
