what does it like to run your own aviation theme YouTube channel and get to meet and interact with pilots all across the country that's the question we're gonna answer today in the hangar I used to be a lot respected member of the aviation community and then I started flying a cirrus in that shape that was great until the ins and all of these explosions better pilot because of this obsession hello everyone welcome to this episode of in a hangar I'm Brian and I'm gonna be filling in for Daniel Millican today unfortunately Daniel got very ill and was they unable to come in today and so he's asked me to fill in for him so all I can really say is he's in good hands and we're praying for a full recovery that said I did get to talk to Daniel at the hospital this morning and he gave me some questions to answer to ask for some of the guests today and so with no further delay my my first guess you might know from his YouTube channel taking off and a series he has on that channel called in the hangar everybody welcome Daniel Millican Daniel welcome to in the hangar Thank You Bryan it's good to have you by the way it's good to see you back on your feet you look good thank you thank you so um before we get started Daniel gave me some questions to ask you and I talked him this morning and there was one question on here I was very surprised to see I didn't you know a question I'm talking about - I want to before we get started I want to make sure you're absolutely comfortable talking about that subject okay okay then I'm gonna save that for last that's a teaser all right so you and I are both pilots by the way somebody else here - oh and Christy Wong is here Christy from in the hangar welcome that's good to have you all right so what I was saying is you and I are both pilots but you and I fly for completely different reasons yes I fly just for the sheer enjoyment of it and I'm a VFR day pilot that's probably all I ever be how do you get in aviation totally different okay so for me aviation isn't the weekend flying 200 dollar hamburger for me it's business so I run a film and video production company and we have shoots all over the country and I would rather just instead of taking a commercial flight I'd rather load everybody up in a Cessna 210 and take them myself I find incredible enjoyment and that so all my flying has been business you know my family you probably fly with your family quite a bit yeah so out of my 800 hours ish my wife is flown exactly zero times I've flown with you I understand and Chrissy how did you get into flying oh yeah me too that's it so what are you doing now with your flying you know you started out pool cleaning and doing some things like that that's how you and I met and I think you heard I was a pilot and then you kind of ease your way into it worrying about now well let's see if just under a thousand hours so I'm just in the last couple months it's an addiction and you have every rating mimmik right almost I don't have my multi-engine instructor I've got a records not ever do you have a gyro ready you have a gyro rating a nurturing rating which I don't have well yeah it's never right never have a real pilot's license yeah no seven what gyro rating how'd you get that at flying Jarvis okay we did why for a guy who flies for business and not for fun and pleasure why did you get a job I had some friends who who wanted to get into gyros and invited me what it's peer pressure Oh peer pressure it was peer pressure mmm so now I've only got a few few hours I 30 or 40 but okay so your pilot you fly for work what started the YouTube channel okay so running a film and video business I have clients who asked me you know hey you just finished this video for us we want to put it on our YouTube channel how can we grow that how can we build that and I had a lot of theoretical knowledge but didn't have a lot of practical knowledge building my own film and video company YouTube channel it's a b2b I'm not going to get a lot of consumers you know a lot of numbers or it's not a good test for trying to build it so I thought I need to test I need to do something to actually build one and and at that time I'm flying all over the country with the crew and I've got all these cameras and I thought well you know why not go ahead and start turning them on and so I started building a YouTube channel experimented with well what happens if we do one every other week what happens if we do one a week and just I'm able to experiment a lot to to build it plus it's a passion you know so I mix my profession which I love of doing film video with flying which I love and it's just a win-win and how did you end up as a part of the in the hanger series let's say well Dan actually reached out to me oh gosh earlier last year and said hey I've got this channel that I just started taking off and I'd like to come and interview you in the long warrior and I was like okay that's fine I mean I didn't mind and he seemed not super creepy so I thought she was your daughter and so I was like okay you know that sounds fun and we did it and it was a little shaky but it was really I mean the flight one flying not me so willing it's shaking oh you mean just the experience the experience yeah like for me because it was you know it was I think the first time anybody had been locked outside of my own training videos that I had had you done the one with Bobbie not yet okay oh no that wasn't until later and so we he got into my airplane after hooking up all these cameras and we went flying it was super bumpy that day and of course I had like half the time I have now probably even less than that so we're flying around and you didn't even have your commercial yet that's right that's right and I think that's what I so I was kind of nervous too so I think it was only a couple weeks away from my commercial check right and so everything I turn into check ride Zilla before her checker I know the post on Instagram yeah I guess poor Steve I get really focused and so when he asked me to do it I was like yeah that sounds fun oh we got this check right so I was really in check ride mode and I liked my landings and stucks we went to Meacham and did a touch-and-go I think and I mean everything was like you know can I do this commercial standards I almost asked you if we could do Shondells while we were out there but you know and then about a month later Dan was like hey so I want to do the segment called in the hangar and do you want to come and help out I was like yes so what I would I that point what I was thinking about you know as a TV producer and director what I do is I wanted to experience with different hosts and see you know what the numbers would be you know again going into the list building channel in you know what are some different things in addition to that just you know Christie presents like on the Facebook on social media on North Texas aviators you were so big and just extremely likable I mean everybody just instantly sees you you're so bubbly you're you know you're such an extrovert and it's just perfect for the camera and so I thought let's let's try it let's see what happens and that's why I reached out for in the hangar so that begs the question there's three pilots up here and only two YouTube YouTube channels are we gonna see a long youtube channel spinoff anytime soon I don't know I've had several people that have reached out to me to say you should do this but after talking with Dan it's a terrible idea yeah it's very expensive I'd rather just be the talent and let Dan do all the work and then he can you know profit but seriously I I mean it's a lot of work and right now my focus is aviation the woman who had six check rides in one day it's a little C so here's the thing is that you have to really understand my background in order to know why I am the way I am and why I'm so bubbly like why I'm such a positive presence I am so appreciative and so thankful to be here where I am now this is a lifelong childhood dream that I'm living out and you quit your job to do this you were I I wasn't a doctor but I worked in doctor no I worked in healthcare though okay no so I but ya know I I had a very successful career in healthcare I mean I I did that for like ten years and I made the decision it was not a spur of the moment it took us a year to really figure out how we were gonna do this Steve and I but once we made that decision we committed to it and this is where I'm at I mean I quit my job I'm I'm like this broke flight instructor now I'm living a dream it's awesome so um you talked about doing filmmaking is your primary career you've actually movies and TVs and commercials correct yeah actually have you know a lot of us especially grow up 80's 90's you know and you see the Robert Rodriguez's and the Quentin Tarantino's who came from you know these other places to become filmmakers in in doing commercials and corporate video we're all want to be filmmakers not at least we were back then and I was no different and I had a five-year plan I wanted to go raise money get a script and and I was able to do that and and starting in 2000 over a course of about ten eleven years I made five feature films really yeah and the very very first movie I was able to get Adam Baldwin to be in it and went from there to Sean Patrick Flanery and Mimi Rogers used to be married to Tom Cruise you didn't do that I did a Titanic spoof though that was super funny I'm won an award but in the corporate world he's smooth Titanic it never sinks oh no it's drawn me like one of your french girls see Oh with a Brian type person okay you see well you're almost a French girl anyway that's so I got to do movies and then after 10 10 11 years I realized just like flying I need to make money and so I said goodbye to the movies for the most part but I do a lot of TV and I'm doing TV right now I'm I direct a reality show that's quite interesting really yeah it's a for a Western horse channel called ride TV okay and the show is called cowgirls and these are girls who ride rough stock so they're riding bucking Bronx and and they're breaking bones and all sorts of things so it's actually one of the challenges keeping a cast together okay all right so have a couple more questions that Dan gave me to ask you if we wanted to find your YouTube content how would we go find that well you would search taking off taking off the taking off so youtube-dot-com forward-slash taking off but you know what if you're watching this you're already there okay well we'll put a link in the description anyway Casey was having trouble finding it so what what's what's next for the and obviously this because it hasn't aired yet but after this what's next for the channel you know that it's been a lot of fun I'll tell you some of the most enjoyable parts of doing this channel has been doing in the hangar having these these weekend's that we shoot out a whole season in a two day period this is our third time to start doing that and it's it I so look forward to this bringing people in bringing experts in what do you think meaning meeting all sorts of different people from different backgrounds I mean that's how I met Joe Casey that's how I'm know I already knew you yeah that's right oh that's how I met Josh I've got a lot of really probably single-handedly brought more pilots together than Oshkosh like I love this thing so I like to just come back I guess we have had a lot of people get together and that's the thing is I you know it's one thing when we're on the camera but it's a whole different dynamic or off the camera I know last time you way of trying to get that I'm trying to get that filter to stop I want I know that kind of relaxed when the cameras aren't rolling I mean that's one of the things I'm really trying to get what you're gonna do is you're cut instead of action cut be way more relaxed well I've done that trick before so well and here's the thing - I mean we're pilots there's a lot of non-pc topics being had you could say things that might get you called into the Fisto just maybe so speaking of which so as you know I am yeah right so I'm a North Texas visitor alumnus and I just got back from the one year reunion and I saw your name in the membership book so do you do you care to elaborate on not at all okay well no and what it was is and yeah so I remember you posted your whole story about going to the being called on the Fisto and NTA took up arms on your behalf I mean everybody was like it was very very nice yeah it was incredible how they they really back to you I never posted mine because I probably wouldn't have got that kind of back in the day yeah well and it technically wasn't me but I felt really bad because it was somebody I had brought into this so we were doing I want to just get John shots of my plane who doesn't I'm not gonna do it though because I know what happens no actually you can't do it if you just do it right I just didn't do it right okay and so I had one thing I didn't do right one small little thing I didn't do right if it hadn't been for that I would have been fine but we went out to a uncontrolled public use privately-owned Airport Hicks and we we shot and it was on a day when nobody was there my drone operator I gave her a handheld like we briefed it heavily if somebody comes into the pattern your tool and immediately we're not going over 100 feet with the drone I wasn't doing hi Shan Saul most just a just right at hangar level and we're doing some passes and stuff so I wasn't doing anything crazy but somebody got really upset at Hicks and and that's another thing with for those who operate drones the drone when you're when you're with a drone controller it's a magnet for questions okay so even when I'm doing corporate videos but hey how much did that cost you should just walk around with not the drone but just those to me well you know how Gary has those numbers hanging from his neck I want to hang like answers it cost this much and don't talk to me anymore I'm flying a drone but it's really distracting to have people come up and talk to you while you're trying to fly and so I've instructed my people that are flying drone do not talk to people just don't just ignore him well that really went over well with the with the guy so you know he's I'm gonna call the visit over but I came in and landed and you know and he was upset at me and I was trying to be real nice you know hey it's okay we're been safe we're doing this and that and then four weeks later got a call from the Vista and when you got that phone call here I did not sleep for three days did not sleep I was so bummed you know I'm not I wasn't technically the pilot in command of that drone I was flying my plane but I had brought that person in so I felt really bad and because now she was involved into it and no and I thought there was a whole confusion about some 107 issues and I have a three three three and now I have a 107 but the long and short of it is is that you know I actually a member of AOPA s legal thing so I mean I called them and they were a big help and they helped me sleep a little bit better like here's what could happen even on the could happen on the bad side I was scary scary stuff you know being fined or something like that I just I was not doing well and finally get called in you get your appointment you go in and talk to them by the way they have zero sense of humor oh yeah I know yeah I try to go in and just try to even make small talk known happen nope not gonna happen open the book in point and stuff every time yes exactly it's like you know well what do you think about this in this innocent well let's look at the book I didn't go off script they can't they stay on the script but here's the funny thing about the script so we go in and and we've already determined going in that we were not under the 107 regulations okay we were under 101 I don't know the difference what I didn't either because here's why my 2018 far cuz it was in 2018 had no section 101 I had the ID the electronic version on my iPad updated and it had no 101 they pull out a 101 and and now now it's included but there was no 101 101 is recreational drug not 107 is drone work for commercial purposes so under 101 at a public use privately owned Airport all you have to do is send prior notice to the airport manager you don't need permission you don't need anything that's all I got do really just some prior notice and we wouldn't fight so if I just he could yell and say no you can't do it doesn't matter I just had to send prior notice and then when he calls the Fisto and I get called in I can just say look you know we here's I sent notice these three different ways you know and then they would go okay thank you very much and that would been the end of there so anyway long story but you know that was my trip of the fist oh it wasn't as a famous as yours but at the end of the day it's not an unpleasant thing you learned for it was it you know that was the thing that I learned from is like I lost a lot of sleep over nothing over a little something I had done one little thing wrong I didn't send prior notice and so I learned from and that's really what they wanted to make sure that I had learned yeah and you know we went through a PowerPoint about 101 and went through point by point of what 101 involved in because this wasn't it for money thing it wasn't a commercial venture I just shooting my plane for fun you know so it was a good learning experience and and I learned the Fisto isn't out to just you know find something wrong and give me a ticket they actually want safe flying so out that was an eye-opener so Christi do you have any plans of going to the when you go into Visser I recently went to the physics I had to get a rating yeah so so you guys watching find something that Kristi's done in or flying and makes you call the business oh but the thing is they will never find something no no flying seems like by the book you need to make the film video because it's a I tried to call the guy you know the guy 9:00 copied you saying and I see if we get if his dog I hear today but I've heard that the FAA frowns upon it that's what they did and they found back in my email so there's all the questions that Daniel gave me to ask you guys today do you guys have anything else that you want other people we're not set up for that so no I mean please told Dan oh is it time so alright alright so that's alright so that's it for this episode thanks everybody for tuning in like subscribe comment down below and Daniel if you're watching we're all praying for you get well soon buddy [Music] you
