Daily Mitzvah: Day 113

day 113 today maimonides discusses how to uh nullify our vows and also discusses the laws of the nazarite they have three particular laws the nazirites do not cut their hair they do not drink wine and they do not uh they stay far from the dead they are don't go to cemeteries they don't go to funerals they stay away from dead bodies now the nullification of our vows is not something that um it's not an active law in the sense that we are not we're not meant to nullify our vows once we make a vow we're meant to keep them right we have to keep our word but in the event that we needed to um nullify our vows we are given direct instruction of how to do that and um if you think about it on yom kippur as you might know we the most famous um one of the most famous prayers of the year is on the night of konigdre we actually um nullify our vows and we say you know all of our past vows are null and void all of our future vows should be null and void and that just seems really pretty shaky and weak um in terms of our vows how much uh do our vows actually mean if we can just nullify them like that um so there's actually an interesting um explanation as to the nullification that we do on the night of yom kippur that indeed our entire existence as the jewish people is thanks to this annulment of the vows uh because we know god actually made an oath that if anyone were to serve other gods he would destroy them and in fact after the sin of the golden calf that is exactly what he wanted to do he was ready to destroy the jewish people moshe our ultimate advocate said to god but we know that all the mitzvahs that you give the jewish people you too observe and because the jewish people can annul their vows and a spouse can annul a vow we as your spouse can annul your vow as well and in fact god did absolve the jewish people and did forgive the jewish people and it was on the day of yom kippur on the day of yom kippur god said i forgive you forgive you for what you did and now the jewish people say we want you to remove this oath and we want you to bring us back to the land of israel bring us back to where we belong and remove us from this terrible exile that we find ourselves in now we pray for this every single day and we know that it will be fulfilled very very soon have a wonderful day
