How to make Curtain Material in Unreal Engine 5.1 | TUTORIAL

hello everyone I'm Knight buzzer and welcome back to another tutorial for Unreal Engine 5. in this tutorial I'm going to show you how to create two types of curtain materials one under this translucent and the one that is more opaque now I have this little scene that I set up for starters you need obviously the model for your curtains so it needs to be very high quality so that your curtain will not look bad now my curtains aren't the aren't top-notch quality if you know what I mean but they're fine for the sake of this tutorial so after we place the curtains where you want them to be create a material and apply it to the curtain and I'm going to start with the translucent material so open the editor you need an opacity map and a color map if you want but I'm gonna use this capacity map for both the base color and the opacity I'm gonna plug it into the opacity mask and I'm gonna right click and search for a blend screen then I'm gonna plug it into the base hold three on the keyboard and tap on the screen to create a color constant put it in the first one and the result is going to go into the base color and this will be the color of our curtain I'm gonna set it to White and from here from the UV tab just drag it and search for texture coordinate and for my texture I found out that a tiling of 50 works just fine but it depends on your map so you need to adjust it to suit your your own texture then here we're gonna set the blend mode to mask and we're gonna let shading model to default lit and after that hold one on the keyboard and tap on the screen twice the first Value City to one and the second one to 0.9 the first one you're gonna plug into the specular and the second one into the roughness and hit apply view of maybe 0.4 or 0.5 and it will look okay but from the interiors and it's not gonna be that transparent so that's why I like this method more no I just wanted to let you know that you can do it otherwise so now I have two other curtains on the edges that are gonna be more opaque so I made a material for them and I'm gonna open it and I have this texture then I'm going to drag this color texture and I'm gonna plug it into the base color from the UV I'm gonna again link a texture coordinate node I'm going to set my tiling to two but again you need to play around with it and check to see if it looks good then I'm gonna pull the one on the keyboard again and tap three times on the screen the first one I'm gonna plug it into the specular and I'm gonna foreign [Music] the second one is going to go into the roughness and again with the value of 0.9 and the third one is going to go into the opacity and it's gonna have a value of one then I'm gonna duplicate this texture and plug it into the subsurface color and set the shading model to subsurface I'm gonna show you real quick why hit apply and there we have our curtain now even though these curtains are opaque in real life these two the light still passes through them if you know what I mean but more subtle than in these ones that are more transparent so that's why I wanted to use this um this method with the subsurface scattering because it gives way more realistic results but you can see that in um in the meaning doesn't look pretty nice only if path chasing as I showed you before and you can totally leave it like that it's gonna look like um very thin curtain it's not a thick blackout one or whatever they called but another tip if you're using path chasing I recommend you set the opacity value to 0.1 because it's not that obvious than in Lumen I mean don't be creeped out about this I know it looks pretty nasty but if we switch to path chasing you're gonna see that they're not bright as they show up in Lumen they have a nice subtle light coming through them and just so you guys know I also have a gaming channel if you want to check that out I'm Gonna Leave a link Down Below in the description box so you can see how the light goes through the material and it makes it look more realistic but if you don't like how this material looks in Lumen you can obviously turn the material to back to opaque and it's gonna look nice now let me know what you think of this video if you liked my technique and also let me know in the comments down below what topic would you like me to do a video about thank you very much for watching and I'll see you on the next one have a great day bye
