hey guys so i uh finally finished my truck it's been a work in progress for i don't know four or five months now and it's this right here it's uh 85 k10 um 4x4 that i've come and swapped i've got a lot of work to this thing and i've broken a lot of parts just because of the half ton and everything so i'm just going to run through it quick so you guys can have a rough idea of what it's going to cost and what you need to know in order to do a common swap it's going to cost you 10 grand and there's people that say that it'll be a lot more little people that'll be saying that'll be a lot cheaper but that's about what it costs to do it and that's using just some time and you're not taking it to a shop you're doing all the work yourself and you're not blowing all your money on parts you don't need to buy and you're doing your due diligence and trying to find cheap parts but yeah about 10 grand you're gonna be it all depends on the truck you're doing if you're doing a regular cab it's a lot cheaper because the crew cabs are a lot harder to find and a lot more expensive so if you're just doing a regular cab truck um yeah you're gonna be about that 10 grand merc for a 4x4 highly recommend finding a three quarter ton or a one ton to do this on don't start with a half ton because you will have to change out the diffs um but anyways let's get into it i got a 10 bolt diff and the ordana 44 in the front i can't no i don't know i actually know what the 10 volt or dana 44 i think it's a dana 44 8 lug uh we got 10 by 15 rims there in the front and back just put those on i got a 14 bolt semi floater in the back here a custom drive shaft i had to get that made up in red deer at extreme driveline and if you're in alberta i wouldn't use anybody else because these guys are awesome i just was laying under my truck giving the measurements on the phone and they made it perfectly i got the dodge np 208 transfer case and the get right 360. one of my biggest pieces of advice to you guys is do not try to be mix and dodge and chevy parts do not even try or think about using a turbo 400 or a turbo 350 transmission behind the cummins you will regret it now another thing to keep in mind is chevy trucks are passenger drop diffs like that one there right so you have to keep that in mind the np-208 on the 89 to 93 dodge first-gen commons are all passenger drop and then after that it's switched over to driver side drop so keep that in mind that's why i went with that and if i was you i would i would definitely go with the 12 up commons a get drag 316 and v208 it literally slides right in i use the summon racing motor mounts and i used uh the summit racing front crossmember the only cutting i had to do in the entire truck was you have to make a little notch for the harmonic balancer and that is right here so if you look right there uh this piece right here i just had the notch out a little bit dropper about an inch and a half and i just cut it out and then re-bolted it back on so it still had the same strength there uh so that's the only thing i had to cut on this truck where the shifter is uh for the transfer case i'll show you here you're going to have to take a hammer and bang in your tunnel just like half an inch so that your uh transfer case and everything will fit up there so you're going to want to bang it in right you can see right up there where that nut is up against um the the tunnel there you're going to want to bang bang that in there just so that uh that nut isn't rubbing on the tunnel because then it will be sitting crooked in there and you won't be able to get her in there straight um if you use the dodge np 208 like i was saying you're not gonna have to uh get a different front drive shaft made it'll your chevy one that's on that comes on the chevy truck will bolt right up to the mp208 um flange or whatever so that kind of covers that side of things uh highly recommend using the summit racing mounts and the summit front crossmember now let's pop the hood here and we'll dive into that that's what you guys all want to see now keep in mind i did this by myself i'm 22 years old with limited tools and just some time on my hands and it took me about 15 days for this truck to drive into the shop with a gas automatic engine to be driving out of the shop with the five speed and the commons behind it or in front of it i guess so like i said before i use the summit racing mounts pretty much they uh well you can see it better from the other side they bolt right into your block this piece i don't know if you can see it but down there they bolt right to your block and then you can actually mount your cummins engine right into your factory chevy chevy clam shells and the clam shells are the same for the 454 the 6.2 liter diesel and the small block 350 i believe so that is definitely the way to go i did not have to cut any of my firewall or anything to fit this thing in here and there actually is a room for the fan i just don't run it because i don't need to i'm it up in canada running a half top half ton cummins this thing doesn't heat up as it is so didn't have to deal with any of that um as far as the radiator goes and everything i'm using the i'm using the dodge radiator and uh dodge intercooler off of first gen coming so that's 89 up to 93 and what you're gonna have what you're gonna have to do is you're gonna have to make your own rad supports or your own like uh mounts here you can see a weld these up i am not a professional welder [Music] and then you're gonna have to cut out your for your core support for your radiator you're gonna pretty much have to cut i don't know if you can see um so this is your uh this is for your one of your horns right here this this circle piece here uh you're gonna have to cut pretty much everything out in between this circle here in your core support all the way over to your other one here so here's my see like i was saying there's for your horn here's my horn over here and then if i had another horn it would be right here you have to cut a box out of your entire radiator support and then your intercooler will actually there's actually holes already there and it mines like bolted right in that'll just take some common sense thinking to put together but very easy to do um my exhaust and everything fit fits back in there it's tight but it does fit didn't have to cut anything there um i use the dodge charging system and i have another video which i'll post put the link on uh for you to find on how to how to set up the dodge charging system because i made a video for first gen commons because i already i also have one of those and they can be a huge pain with their factory charging systems but i use the same charging system here as i did on there so there's already a video on how to set that all up and i'll put the link there so you can figure out how you actually want to set up your charging um on your truck very easy um another thing you're going to want to do is delete all the wiring that's on your first gen like on your commons engine when you get it you don't need it like just get rid of the entire wiring wiring harness for everything you don't need any of it there's only two wires that you need to make this thing run if it's a first gen cummins 12 valve and that is power 12 volt power to your fuel shutoff solenoid which is back down here and power to your starter and that is it and don't even goof around with those um electric fuel pumps just use the stock mechanical fuel pumps they work great so what you're going to want to do for the wiring wiring on these things is extremely easy it's like the easiest thing ever label all the wires um before you take out your small block chevy or your 6.2 diesel or whatever label all the wires uh and where they go so for the starter wire there's just i know that on the small blocks um there's just a i think it's a pink wire that goes to your starter or maybe it's brown that one as a starter power for for your solenoid so mark that one all the wires that go to your alternator on your chevy side you can actually there's gonna be a ground wire right to from your alternator to your block and then there's gonna be a couple other wires on your chevy side um and you're gonna bunch those all together and just put them straight to your battery so you can see what i did here so this right here this cable right here oh i've just bunched all these wires together these ones actually were connected to my chevy alternator i bunched them all together and they go straight to your battery and that is what you do there um what else are you gonna have to do oh boy you're gonna have to find so i know it's still a bit of a mess under here um but like i said the charging system i have another video on that so just do what i said in that video and that'll fix all your charging issues you're gonna have to find um these two pink wires here or actually it's one so if you look under here coming out of your uh on your firewall on your chevy side here it'll be a big thick pink wire when you turn the key on that wire will have power if all the wires that were going to your chevy alternator are now going straight to your battery on your swap when you turn the key on that pink wire will have 12 volts so what i did is i made a little fuse block so i have this one big thick pink wire coming to this fuse block here and then i have i'm running some other stuff off of here like some accessories and light bar and whatever and then also my fuel shut off solenoid and uh you want to do that um so when you turn you can actually use the key so when i turn the key on and off it all works and uh but yeah if you if you just kind of label your wires as you go as you're taking them off of your uh truck before you rip the 350 out um it'll make your life a lot easier and then you can just kind of use your intuition and go from there if you have any questions just leave a comment on the video and i will try and do my best to help you um what else here your cummins will fit in there if you use the summit racing front crossmember mount i actually used uh the chevy uh trans cross member here and i made these blocks here which i'm gonna have to redo i didn't do a very good job on that just to drop her down about an inch and a half um yeah like i said before custom drive shaft i got a four inch exhaust here um i had to go underneath the crossmember which i don't really like but did not fit between the frame and the transfer case um okay so the next big thing here is what am i going to do about clutch pedal well if i was you i would not even try and goof around with trying to make your own clutch pedal set up i would um take your time and try and find a factory clutch pedal assembly out of a square body because it'll bolt right in it'll bolt right in under the dash you just take your old brake pedal out and then your new one will come with a clutch and brake pedal on the same bracket and it'll bolt right up in there super easy all these greasy wires aren't doing anything it's from the previous owner myself to clean that all up so don't don't worry about that i put my uh intake or my grid heater just on this button here so i just run a solenoid so when i push this it this sends power straight from the battery to the the grid heater if you have a question about that leave a comment and i'll explain it better but yeah like i said find a factory gm clutch pedal and you're gonna have to make a little linkage um i know on what is it what's that place called rock auto they make a uh a master and slave cylinder set up for the dodge get right 360 which is this right here you're gonna have to find a way to mount this uh what is this the master cylinder to the firewall here and then you're gonna have to just make your own uh way to when you plug press the clutch pedal it pushes a rod and then activates this you're gonna have to just make a little bracket or do some welding um i had a guy make me a little bracket that is welded into this this piece right here and then i was able to put this on um and go from there that'll be some that'll this will probably be the trickiest part of the entire swap is getting the clutch all set up but if you have any questions like i said leave me a comment and i will do my best to help you out other thing you're going to want to do is on the first gen cummins so the 1989 to 93 the intake horn looks like this or actually no sorry it comes out like this and then down you're gonna have to uh either get a second gen intake horn because they actually come at an angle and then you won't be hitting your uh your brake cylinder here and um but what i did was as you can see i'm a cheap cheap guy and i just turned this and i this actually isn't a square piece here so the bolt holes only line up on two holes so i just use some of the right stuff and voltage they're down i'm not running running more than about 15 pounds of boost so not a big issue there and as far as the intercooler piping goes you're going to have to do some of your own welding and your own kind of fabricating or whatever you can figure something out abs i don't know make make that work for that because this you will not be able to use the dodge intercooler lines um on the chevy just because of the way things are set up with the intercooler and everything um what else do we need to talk about your charging system like i said is uh i have a video on that now as far as your gauges go the speedo cable out of the np208 is actually the same as the one that's coming out of the chevy on some transfer cases on the np205 i believe and some other ones so that will work your speedo gauge uh your voltage gauge when you do everything i said to you with with you you hook all the wires that were going to your chevy alternator go straight to your battery like obviously not the big ground cable but everything else goes straight to your battery uh then this will work all your lights will work your signal lights will work and everything and then like i said with that pink wire it comes out of your firewall there run that to a little fuse box and then have that one that's a key power so when you turn the key on you'll have power there and then you can run your fuel shut off solenoid on your cummins and everything and just other random things like i have my speedometer my uh this one doesn't work for me it doesn't work so i just got all these gps ones um but yeah then as far as you're gonna have to cut some holes here now on the two-wheel drive one you're gonna have to um cut out your entire tunnel to make the cummins fit in there if you're doing a two-wheel drive chevy truck um but if it's a four wheel drive one the tunnel's already tall enough and it doesn't matter if it's an automatic or a standard it will fit like with a five speed in there it will fit if it's a four wheel drive chevy truck and it does not matter if it's automatic or not it will fit um if it's a two-wheel drive automatic it will not fit or if it's a four-wheel drive automatic well i guess obviously then you always have your t-case in there so yeah anything four-wheel drive will work if you use the summit mounts i'm probably not the most i'm not the greatest uh explainer of everything um but i'm doing my best your steering box your lines coming off of your um power steering pump on your dodge will bolt or will go right into your chevy steering box which is super nice and then uh you got your vacuum pump down here run that up to your brake booster and then whatever vacuum lines you need for your heat and everything for your hvac that'll all work great um what else your heater hoses just hook those right up to your heater core um and i think that is about it i had to move my windshield washer reservoir over to this side because i am running a big battery in here to crank this thing over you don't need to do that i just wanted to do it because i wanted to run a bigger battery and uh i think that is about it and if you have let's say you are doing a half ton and you want to do a three-quarter ton diff swap very easy if you use a 14 bolt it'll bolt right in you can go between 12 10 and 14 volt they all use the same pattern they're the same width and everything and then the front um it's all the same two i believe 10 and 12 volt front ends are like the the width of the axles like where the plates are that mount onto your leaf springs they're all the same so that is about it here's my truck and i have roughly about 10 grand into it now i bought the truck here for 2 800 bucks and then the rest is just other stuff like the engine was three grand the transmission and everything i think that was about 2 200 bucks in the transfer case and then just axles and all the little stuff that you're gonna need i know i didn't cover everything you're gonna have to kind of figure some stuff out on your own but like i said if you have any questions leave a comment and i'll uh i'll get to it eventually and we'll help you out i'll even give you a call if you uh shoot me your number or whatever and we can figure it out but let me know if there's anything else you need to know and we'll go from there hope you guys have a great day and i will uh start the truck so you can hear it and also i just i love hearing it so that's why i'm starting it so let me set this up over here and when you start it for the first time and take it for a drive it'll all be worth it you won't even care how much it costs that i will promise you
