individual who recently earned her bachelor's degree in applied social sciences but took a bit of a detour on her way to reach this long-weighted milestone she's here today to share the wisdom she's gained both from life and from academics please join me in welcoming your spring 2022 commencement student speaker mary kay mccarthy [Applause] good morning members of the faculty graduates families and friends it is a great honor for me to have been selected to address all of you at this year's csu global commencement ceremony good things come to those who wait i waited a very long time to graduate from csu global in 2021 with a bachelor of science degree in applied social sciences it was one of the proudest days of my life and at my age i have a lot of days to choose from i began my college career in the fall of 1959. yes you heard that right 1959 at the university of saint thomas in houston texas i was majoring in elementary education to become a teacher following in the footsteps of my mother dorothy who earned a college degree in the 1920s and went on to teach for ninety dollars a month a teacher could not be married in those days so it stated in her contract that it would become null and void should she ever marry as a result her teaching career ended in 1933 when my parents were married i was raised in a small conservative farming community in southeast kansas in a town called parsons i attended elementary school with a class of 12 students until we went into high school and merged with another elementary school and became a class of 24 students in my sophomore year my father was transferred with his job to houston texas i had already been driving for a year and a half by then so was granted an exception to have a driver's license in houston at the age of 15. i had never even seen a freeway but i had no fear in driving the maze of all the freeways all around houston and that was quite a thrill for me after coming from such a small town in my senior year of high school my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer so i chose to live at home and go to college as a day student so i could help as needed by the middle of my junior year it became apparent that she would not live long enough to see me graduate from college and get married i had met my future husband in college so we began planning our wedding for the fall of 1962. this fall will be our 60th wedding anniversary [Applause] after being in the navy my husband returned to college on the gi bill and graduated in 1969. by that time we had lost all four of our parents and several other close members of our family we also had our first two children by then two girls and decided to move to denver before they would be starting school after adopting what would be our only son we had two more girls and life would never be the same raising a family of five was a full-time job so i was fortunate enough to be able to stay at home until the youngest one was leaving for college at the age of 50 i entered the career world taking a job in sales with the south metro denver chamber of commerce i was with them for the next 21 years and loved what i did during that time our five children went on to college got married and blessed us with 10 grandchildren half of them have already graduated from college and the others are either in college now or will be in just a few more years in 2017 i began to recognize that i did not want to be the only one in our family without a college degree csu global accepted my credits that were nearly 60 years old so i could resume my college education i did have to change majors at that time which meant that i would need 15 classes to complete my degree it was quite a challenge doing all my classes online at my age but i've always said that challenges present new opportunities so i was determined to persevere a few years prior to that decision to that decision my husband larry was diagnosed with dementia going back to school gave me something else to focus on and my husband was very supportive as he knew that i had always wanted to complete my college degree as his disease progressed he would ask every single day how much longer it would be until i was finished with school he thought i was spending an inordinate amount of time on studying and it was taking more time as my final classes were getting harder but i wasn't going to give up when i was that close to finishing early last year i made the most difficult difficult decision of my life to move my husband to a memory care home he was starting to wonder and not making safe decisions in our home with the stove and other things i was so thankful to have my final class begin on the monday after we moved him i had never lived alone before so it was a big adjustment for me to have him gone but not really gone i worked extremely hard on that last class and having the support of my professor and classmates really helped me through that difficult transition in my life we also had our first great grandchild a darling little girl named eloise dorothy who's over there and this is what the circle of life is all about she adds so much joy to all of our lives i would also venture to say that this likely means i'll be the first great grandmother to cross the stage to receive my college degree i am so grateful and thankful to csu from global for making it possible to achieve my lifelong dream of completing my college degree come true i also could not have done this without the love support and encouragement of my entire family when i started back to college i was determined to finish before i turned 80. last summer they had a combination graduation and 80th birthday party for me which was such a fun celebration in fact i haven't stopped celebrating every chance i get raising a big family gave gave us many opportunities to learn from each other with 12 years difference from our oldest to our youngest child different personalities and interests i really emphasized that everyone was entitled to their own opinion one of my favorite expressions is you didn't ask for my opinion but you know i always have one it was it wasn't important to be right and you did not have to agree but it was of utmost importance to respect each other's opinions meal times were an opportunity to share what our days had been like and the things we were looking forward to with our focus always on being grateful for our many blessings going through the pandemic has been a real challenge for everyone there is so much division in our country right now i think it's more important than ever to follow those basic principles learn to really listen to one another respect opinions that are different from our own value time with our family and friends and support each other every way that we can the legacy in life that i want to leave with everyone is to keep the faith be resilient with what life brings to you and never stop learning you're never too old to learn something new thank you so much for this opportunity to speak to you and tell my story stay strong be kind to one another and never give up your goals and your dreams congratulations graduates we did it thank you very much [Applause] thank you so much [Music] thank you so much mary kay for those inspirational words we are we're truly inspired by your your dedication and your your this morning we are all in for a treat so our next speaker is a energetic purpose-driven leader now as a naturopathic doctor entrepreneur athlete husband and father dr james rouse has been inspiring people to create a life they love for more than 30 years now from fortune 50 boardrooms to nationally broadcast media dr rouse has advised billionaires world-class athletes and budding entrepreneurs and today he will deliver your commencement keynote address please join me in welcoming dr james rouse oh my goodness good morning everyone good morning families to the graduates and mary kay oh my gosh i just feel like this sets a tone for all of us today to really just give ourselves full permission to be present and take in this most auspicious day so good morning and welcome and congratulations to the graduates as well as their families their loved ones and definitely a huge thank you to the csu faculty administrators and staff you have all made today possible to begin let's just use this moment to become fully present not even want to do something a little kind of extraordinary and maybe ask you just to close your eyes just for a moment because there's a lot of good science that speaks to closing our eyes and just getting fully present with what's happening right before our lives just to really fully take it in this is a sacred moment so when you close your eyes maybe just picture and fully feel the people in your life who had made this experience possible to allow you to arrive here today and as you bring in the people into your heart make sure that you know that one of the most beautiful things that's happened to allow you to be in this room today as you know is some of the ways that you have continually shown up when so many things didn't feel like it was going to be possible and allowing you to love yourself and be loved into this celebration and i would love for you now just open your eyes and maybe if you can scan around and look and maybe find your family and your loved ones and just make that eye contact with them there you go this is the best part you guys this is the best part [Music] [Applause] this is truly well done everyone that's beautiful this is an auspicious day and time to be making your way into the world not just with your degrees in hand but reflecting on the experience of the last several years and remind yourself of all the things that you have done and the things that you have overcome the ways that you have shattered your limiting beliefs and chosen a path of being more fully yourself and i believe days like today make you know that you're just more fully alive and as you connect to all that you have done just kind of come back to this moment just give yourself permission just fully feel good about who you are no more striving just being present allowing yourself to feel that love for yourself each of you is here having chosen a path with a story that is deeply personal illustrating your tenacity your grit and your zeal and this story i believe is your superpower and it will carry you wherever you choose to go like many of you i began my college experience much later than my so-called peers i am a dyslexic who didn't know how to read or write or do math well into my teens and just kind of fumble through high school trying to figure out how i could least get through high school and i can tell you that my learning liability which i eventually turned into a learning opportunity was one of the greatest ways to help me navigate the world differently and as i think and encourage you to consider your superpower in the ways that you have navigated and brought forth your purpose to help you transcend reason at times and given you that sense of an unreasonable and even sometimes feeling delusional belief in yourself to get through so please hold strong to your beautiful eccentricity eccentricity is a superpower it means to move away from the center and to really own your story and as you're looking around the world today it could be all too easy to see only the challenges because oh my gosh they're just so many challenges and i want to encourage you to take to heart what may be true for us as we hear something that is such beautiful wisdom that was brought back to us back in stoic philosopher who many of you may have heard of marcus aurelius who back in the second century he was the roman empire and as an emperor of rome at that time he was the most powerful person in the entire world and when he was asked as an emperor what is your vocation and marcus simply came back and said i simply want to be a good person i just want to be a good person and i think this resonates with all of us today as you think about your future think about where you've been you think about your story i just want to continually evolve to be a better person the version of myself that makes me feel proud of who i am and the way that i show up each and every day now for us who live here in denver who fly through denver you've probably seen there's a kiosk there's a company here in denver it's called be a good person entrepreneurial brand they have a kiosk on concourse b and they have a lot of cool stuff in their kiosks but one of the things that's really cool about this company is that they have a mission and their brand is based on for this passion for positivity in a brighter future that we as a company see for everyone in our future today we know from countless studies that the same pursuit of being a good person can lead to greater happiness and success in our careers now if i leave you with any advice and i'm not someone here who wants to share words of advice i'm not here to share any wisdom i'm here to share and look at each of you and your families and say right now this idea of being good and doing good is a superpower and it will stick out in the world it will help you to be discovered in ways that help to enliven your world and the purpose behind what it is that you took this experience to pursue this education and as we look a little bit more in depth at how the purpose can be combined with life lessons i want to remind you of a really important place to begin so the okinawans which you may know they are the country and the people that literally have the most centenarians in the entire world so people in okinawa by and large live to 100 more than anyone else and they've been studied for decades initially scientists thought it was all about their plant-based diets they ate a lot of broccoli and kale and sweet potatoes but as they started to really uncover what the okinawans really did they found a much more inspiring reason and it is found in the word ikigai i-k-i-g-a-i which simply means i have a reason to get up in the morning that's bigger than oneself it's bigger than me what wants me to get up in the morning and do something with my life to be driven by intrinsic energy which is harnessing the power of your heart's knowing in such a way not to lose your way despite the noise in the world calling for all of our attention so please keep steadfastly focused on your intentions and rise each day under the influence of gratitude and embody this idea vicki guy because you know and science tells us but more importantly i think spiritually we know this we are all alive to the degree that we serve we are all alive to the degree that we serve harvard researchers have looked at the purpose and ideas of success in its relationship to evokable happiness they've done this study now it's actually over 80 years old following thousands of people all over the world and they found out that having a knowing of your purpose which again is something bigger than ourselves reinforces a greater chance of being here on the planet longer and stronger purpose actually aids in us actually living long and what's beautiful having purpose in the form of strong loving and meaningful relationships literally was the most powerful and much more powerful than money or fame when it came to experiencing fulfillment in your life in the careers of these people they found out that when they actually had greater success and fulfillment it always came back to the qualities of the relationships the people who they loved and the people who loved them so where do you go from here you have a world-class education and undoubtedly have overcome countless barriers to rise to where you now sit and i trust that many of you have plans and you have dreams to fulfill and pursue them like your best life depends on them because they do i hope that you do this one other thing and this is a thing i tell you when i was putting together my thoughts to speak with you today this is the one i was most nervous to share with you i would love all of you and this is including your families and your loved ones do not be afraid to take your life purpose public allow the world to see you living your purpose with a deep and unwavering passion because we right now know that every human being is living a life of passion has something called contagion which simply means that the world starts to lay eyes on someone living their life with passion we can't help but want to follow them and together we can incite a movement towards union and reunion each of us being a catalyst to actually help us bring us together again in a time where we are actually experiencing a prevalence of social political and emotional separation i believe that choosing to show up and stand out and live your purpose can foster and serve global unification and let us see you living fully to remind others to do the same this is where peace inclusion hope and community reside look around right now just look around see your classmates and see the hope on their faces and see the hope from your family and your loved ones hope is a superpower and hope is contagious hope is the most powerful instigator of bringing people together and hope incites a beautiful kind of activism where hope is the most powerful and contagious form of leadership and we know from research that when we see a human being leading their life with hope we can't help but want to follow them and i know what many of you may be thinking i think the same thing how dare we go public with our hope right now well how dare we not being seen and not dimming your light to make the world more comfortable sims is simply ask all of us to not become comfortable with dimming our light to fit in it simply asks us to create and express a life that's so brilliant that's so beautiful that the world cannot help but take its eyes off from you others cannot help but want to emulate and copy and follow you in your courageous example and demonstration of purpose you are a possibility and your life is a form of positivism people want to follow people who carry hope we often attribute the quote be the change we wish to see in the world to mahatma gandhi but actually gandhi said something just a little bit different what he said was this we but mirror the world and all the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world inside of us and if we can change and grow ourselves the tendency in the world would also change as a human changes their own nature so does the attitude of the world change towards them and this is the divine mystery supreme a wonderful thing that is the source of true happiness where we need not wait to see what others do we ourselves become the change we wish to see in the world and as the philosopher pierre tiahar desjardins once said someday after mastering the winds the waves the tides and gravity we shall harness for god the energies of love and for the second time in history we will as humans discovered fire rise and shine class of 2022 we see you we believe in you and yes we are following you thank you [Applause] to thank dr rouse so much there were so many important messages in that significant keynote so thank you so much i think it's so important to remember the importance of relationships and how they had such a incredible impact on our lives so thank you again dr rouse so i
