This is Trey Parker! Co-creator of South Park! Trey studied at Berkeley College  of Music and later transferred   to the University of Colorado in Boulder. He took a film class and this  is where he met Matt Stone. An Art and Math major who shared Trey's interest  in film, provocative humor, and Monty Python. Trey and Matt worked on a number of  projects together. But the most notable   was "The Spirit of Christmas" - The 4-minute animated short that   later inspired South Park. It was made with an 8mm camera using  construction paper and stop-motion techniques. In this early version of the show there were a few  differences to what we are familiar with today. For example, the eyes were hand-drawn circles,  Kyle had a yellow hat and no ear flaps, Kenny  had a visible mouth, and Cartman was actually   referred to as 'Kenny' while the rest of  the characters were not specifically named. The short premiered at a student film screening  in 1992. Then it was briefly forgotten about. After graduating, Trey and Matt  went to Hollywood to pitch their   films and ideas to producers, and  this is where they met Brian Graden. Brian saw their Christmas animation  and paid them to make another short;   as a Christmas card for him to  share with his family and friends. Trey and Matt took the deal and  made a new 5-minute short on VHS,   also titled "The Spirit of Christmas" but with  a new story and updated character designs. The VHS was passed around from  friend to friend to friend,   eventually finding its way into the  hands of somebody at Comedy Central. From this, they were asked to do a full-  length TV pilot based on the same characters. This time around, the project had a  much larger team and they all spent   3 months in a room developing the 28-minute pilot. But unfortunately it was too long to be broadcast,   so the episode had to be re-edited with a couple  of extra scenes added to tie the story together. After the painstaking experience of animating  the one episode, it was decided that the most   sensible thing to do would be to animate  the rest of the series on computers. And now it only takes 5 to 6  days to make a single episode.
