[Music] so hi i'm real malcolm and welcome to my channel in this video we will learn how to make a realistic wood using vbr materials so let's get started okay let's talk about pbr materials pbr stands for basically base rendering it is a method of rendering that provides a more accurate representation of how light interacts with surfaces so since it's more accurate it will result into a realistic look of material and this material is based on a set of specific textures such as the base color metalness roughness displacement normals and so on so what makes a good pbr material one must be in high resolution 1080p and higher resolution are best for pbr material we have 1080p 4k 6k 8k resolution what i recommend is using 4k resolution texture and minimum should be at least 1080p so why i recommend 4k in using 4k texture you have a lot of pixels which makes the tiniest details visible if we have a material far away from the camera we could still see those details but do not overuse 4k textures in your project because it eats a lot of your ram and it will slow down your render times that is why 6k and 8k fixtures are just overkill for now a good balance of 4k and 1080p textures is what i recommend so let us look at this example this material is what i use in my recent animation project we're gonna replicate what i did here but first we need to download a wooden material i want to show you this website where you can get free pbr materials this is gcotextures.com uh this website they have detailed and seamless seamless textures and it's available available up to 8k and they have displacement maps and their materials come with substance files and what i like of this one they have their textures are under creating commons which means we can use this in commercial purposes and even if that means redistributing them as fast okay so if we go to their categories [Music] they have a lot of acids here from paving stones tiles woods leather marble and so on so you can go to this website this is free for our example we will need a wooden material so we go here to plants and what i use in my project is this one okay so it's available in jpeg and png files so you have your 1k 2k 4k and 8k materials so what we need to download are this 4k materials okay but i don't need to download this now because i i already have this go here so once you download this you will have this one but you have this the base color a bit occlusion displacement normal and roughness and except for this one because this one i modified this from the normal so we can go later on this one so i'm gonna delete this and make new material [Music] okay so we need to choose a color map this is this one from our downloaded material and automatically lumion will make a normal map but i don't want this so we can remove this normal map and we will choose the normal map that we downloaded okay and then we add the displacement map okay what we're gonna do now is to make this scale okay maybe around [Music] like that and then we're gonna make since this is yellow color we're gonna make this a little bit of orange so we can add some color to this one we go to orange and i'm gonna push this slider up and i'm gonna move this color colorization slider to the right to make it a little bit orange maybe something like that okay then i'm gonna rotate this one to 90 degrees okay that's fine so one tip in in making materials is you have to make an angle from your light light source so my light source here at this portion here okay where the sun is so i'm gonna make like this so i'm gonna move this gloss slider to the left let's see what we will have maybe something like that and then reflectivity and i don't want this to be too reflective maybe something like that and then next is the relief so the relief is the bumpiness if i gonna move this to the left okay it will uh listen the bumpiness of the material so if you're gonna move this to the right it will be rough so maybe a little bit here hey that's fine and then displacement okay i'm gonna move this to the right you will have something like this but i don't want it to be like that maybe around 0.3 okay so and we will give this a little bit of withering which is wood and maybe around 23 and the ejs like that okay so we're gonna make a test render for this one so we will save the changes and we go to the photo mode okay i already prepared this one so let's make this render here okay as you can see here we have our we have this reflection and we have some glossiness around here so this is fine so we can make this test render okay make this sample 0 1. okay the render is finished we will open the folder [Music] i think this is fine but we could make this a lot better if we could add a reflection map because in real world this lighter part of the wood will have stronger reflection and this darker portion here will have weaker reflection so how we gonna do that so let's go back to lumion what we're gonna do is to modify our normal map so if we go to our if we go to photoshop and we open the color map and our normal map okay so let's make our color map into reflection map to do that we need to make this black and white so in black and white you have some preset here so we can go with lighter maximum black and maximum white so this could be our starting point if we do this in lighter like that maximum block and maximum white i think we're gonna start with the lighter one okay you can use this slider here but for me i will use the levels and i want this to be a little bit darker by moving this slider like that and then i move again to the left i'm gonna move the white make it stronger maybe something like that okay [Music] as you can see this white lighter portion here will have stronger reflection and this darker ones will have weaker reflection so i think this is okay and i'm gonna press ctrl a for ctrl alt and then ctrl c for copy and then i'm gonna go to the normal map so we go to the channels and i'm gonna add here another channel we have here alpha one and i'm gonna press ctrl v okay and then ctrl d to deselect okay so what we have here is we embedded our reflection map to our normal map so what we're gonna do here and in order for this reflection map to be used in lumion we're gonna save this one into a tiger file or tga file okay this one target file and i'm gonna make this normal plus reflection since i already have this [Music] tga file that i use in my scene i will make this as number two then i will save and press ok and now we go back to lumion so let's remove this normal map and we will replace that with our dj file press open now as you can see here we have changed changes in our material as you can see here we have this stronger reflection here and this darker ones have weaker reflection so we can adjust our glossiness maybe something like that and reflectivity okay so that's looks more natural [Music] and then we will try to render this one okay so we save the changes and we go to the photo mode we will render this one some pool number two [Music] okay the render is finished let's open the folder [Music] now in our example number two when we add the reflection map we have our reflection right here we have stronger reflection on this lighter part of the wood but in the darker part of the wood it's much lesser and weaker so i think this is more natural and more realistic so let's watch the comparison of our renders by looking at the two renders the one that has reflection map looks more better and more realistic how about we will make another variant of our material in which in the reflection map we will make this darker portion more darker and this lighter one more whiter so let's see what it looks like so we go again to photoshop okay so i go back to black and white and then i will choose here maximum block okay this could be my starting point and i will go to the labels to adjust and i want my dark part to be more darker okay right there my letter part to be more white something like that okay so i'm gonna press ctrl a for ctrl alt and then ctrl c for copy and we're gonna go back to the normal and i'm gonna delete this [Music] i'm gonna make another channel i'm gonna press here ctrl v okay so let's save this let's save this start the file and name this as reflection three so we already have here two variants and this is the third one so if you have some if you have projects and you are using making materials you could add some variants to your reflection map so later on you can use them and makes your work easier so let's save this and then we go to the lumion materials and we're gonna delete this normal map and i'm gonna add this reflection tree okay as you can see there is a big changes in our material where in we have this darker portion here if we make this more glossy like that and make this more reflective maybe somewhere around here okay maybe something like that let's see how it how will it looks like if we're render this one okay let's render okay let's open the folder [Music] as you could see we have a lot of darker portions in our wood that are less reflective than the lighter ones we could make something like this for example like weathered woods or we could say that this wood is not new so it is more on personal preference on how you want your material would look like so i think that's all for this tutorial on how to make realistic wood with pbr materials i hope you learned a lot from this because if you do please hit the like button and also i wanna give you this free pbr materials from ccotextures.com which i modify by adding reflection maps and save them as tiger file you can download this on the link provided in the description so let me know what you think on this tutorial just write down your comment below if you haven't subscribed yet to my channel please click the subscribe button i'll be giving more tutorials soon i am will mocom and i see you on my next video bye
