[Music] all right let's go ahead and open up this month's box first up we have our freebie we'll just set that to the side for a minute first thing i pull out is our uncolored glow powder this is just an uncolored red glow which is a nice ready orange and it glows really nice it also has a really nice crisp white daytime color which we're going to take advantage of in this ring next we have our ring blank which is just a hammered tungsten so it's really nice and scratch resistant but it has a really cool texture and look to it because it has so many different faces and almost like a patinaed look to it next we have garnet which is just a really nice red material it's also kind of transparent so it's going to add a little bit of depth to it but still have a little bit of red to go with the the color pigment next we have our obsidian which is just a really solid black material it adds a lot of depth because it's fairly transparent so it's going to help create the pattern that we're looking for in this ring and add a little bit of depth next to finish it off we just have our crimson color pigment which is just a really nice vibrant ready with hues of purple finally our freebie this month it's a six pack of our metallic colors so you have colors from hot chocolate to gunmetal just some nice metallic earth tone colors the only prep work we had for this ring was to move the crimson color pigment from the plastic bag to a vial so that it's a little bit easier to work with [Music] so [Music] all right next we'll go ahead and throw a ring on the ring mandrel and since we're using hammer tungsten we don't really need to use electrical tape as hammer tungsten is really hard to scratch so you're not going to damage it by putting it directly onto your ring mandrel next we'll use our thick ca adhesive and inlay several pieces of garnet for this ring i was doing a size 14 so i inlaid quite a few pieces you could definitely do a little bit less but with such a large ring you need to add a lot more pieces to make the inlay look as full as you would with a smaller ring with a lot less pieces so i was using quite a few pieces of the garnet and of the obsidian but for now i was inlaying the pieces of garnet and then securing them into place with the uncolored red glow powder to simulate the pattern on a king snake i didn't want to add any color pigment to the glow powder i wanted to keep it a really crisp white so we're doing this section with just plain uncolored glow powder and then later on we're going to add some of our color pigment but for now i went ahead and secured every piece of the inlay the obsidian and the garnet with the uncolored red after i'm happy with the number of pieces of inlay that i have in the ring what i did is i took the medium ca adhesive and i put a little dab on each piece of the of inlay material i'm doing this so that we can create a really solid ring of white around each piece of the inlay material because the king snake kind of goes red white black so what we're trying to do is create that really solid red line around each of the inlay materials so that we can get that same pattern of a really dark red a crisp clean white that's not dirtied or sullied by the red color pigment and then the black or dark section which will be either the garnet or the obsidian they both look pretty dark so we're just going with that for our black to simulate the same pattern with the uncolored red we're hoping to have it almost look like a continuous line that's kind of snaking its way through the inlay of this ring obviously you'll have some sections that it does get broken but we're trying to have a pretty solid twist of the uncolored in there so that's another reason that we're doing a dab of the medium ca adhesive on each piece of the inlay material to try and create as much of a twisting line of the white as we can [Music] so [Music] [Music] and i actually repeated that step twice just to make sure that i did have enough of the uncolored i didn't want to have any areas that were not quite white enough any areas that were where the white was too thin they'd get sullied by the red the red would kind of bleed into it so i just wanted to make sure that each of the areas was thick enough that the white would stand out and really pop so that's why you'll see me do it two times after i've added some white i actually took a razor blade and i cut some of the excess white out of the areas that don't have inlay material all i did was make sure that those areas were low enough that we could fill them in with the red we didn't want this ring to be entirely white we just wanted the white to be around the inlay materials so i'm just going through and clearing out some of the areas in between the inlay materials [Music] after that i'll take my super thin ca adhesive and just do a thin layer of that all the way around the ring and begin pouring out some of the crimson red color pigment over the entire ring we're going to do this step a few times since we're using a color pigment with no glow powder in it it's a lot clumpier it's a lot harder to work with it doesn't saturate the with the ca adhesive quite as well as it does when it has glow powder so you just want to go really slow with this step you want to make sure that you're doing small thin layers because otherwise you'll end up with dry pockets where it didn't get any ca adhesive saturating it so it'll fall out later on so you just want to make sure you're doing several layers of the super thin ca adhesive and then color pigment just doing that over and over again until you've filled the entire ring all the way up [Music] after we've filled the entire inlay channel with our color pigment we're going to go ahead and hit it with some accelerator and allow it to sit for several minutes and just cure make sure that you do give it plenty of time to cure it can be a little hard to judge how long it needs to be because the uncolored or the unglowing color pigment has a hard time absorbing the ca adhesive so i didn't quite give it enough time i only let it sit for about 10 minutes and i actually had a few sections that hadn't cured all the way through so i had to touch them up after i'd dremeled them down and sanded so if you want to just be really careful and not have to touch it up like i did go ahead and let it sit for a little bit longer than you normally would i'd say 20 or 30 minutes is plenty but just make sure you you allow it to cure long enough so that you don't have any wet pockets in the ring that will get dirty when you're sanding and dremeling for this ring i went ahead and did my dremeling with 80 grit dremel bits and i was just grinding it down the garnet and the obsidian they kind of make me blow through these dremel bits so keep that in mind as you're sanding that this may take a few extra dremel bits just because of the hardness of the materials i'm pretty sure it's just the garnet that's causing this to happen and the hammer tungsten since it has its ridges when you get lower down they'll also kind of eat into the dremel bits a little bit more than normal [Music] [Music] as we were dremeling down i started to get really excited because the pattern that i was hoping for started to emerge we had these pockets of white around the inlay and then the segments of the the red crimson color pigment so i was really excited as i began to dremel to see the pattern emerge i was really liking how it was looking [Music] [Music] here is where you can see i'm having to dig out a couple areas that i didn't allow to cure long enough just areas that were still wet so when i was sanding and dremeling they gathered just dark gross particles from the sanding so i'm just using razor blade to clean them out and then i actually filled them in with some more red color pigment and i did a layer of the super thin ca adhesive to saturate those small holes and create a nice smooth layer around the ring again after i hit that with accelerator i allowed it to cure for a few minutes and then i went back to sanding for me i'm really confident in hand sanding i like it a lot better than dremeling i'm just more confident that i'll get a smooth even clean finish so even though we did have a little bit of a build up of the super thin ca adhesive and the color pigment i went ahead and just started with 220 grit sandpaper and i used a couple pieces of it just to reveal that pattern again to clean off the excess color pigment that i just put on the ring and i just did a couple layers of that until it was smooth i could see that it was nice and clean i had a really nice vibrant white and a really dark clean red after i was happy with how the ring was looking i began to use the 500 and thousand grit sandpapers i use these ones more to get a nice smooth finish on the ring that allows me to get a really good polish on it but since i was using uncolored i wasn't going to take it to a polishing wheel i just used the astrotech liquid polish on this ring [Music] all right i'm really happy with how this one turned out i love the pattern between the red and the blacks and the whites i really love how we were able to capture a little bit of the feel and look of snake scales i was really excited to try this one and learn a few new techniques of trying to use uncolored glow powder next to color pigment that doesn't have any glow powder in it just because it combines a few different techniques and it adds an extra challenge trying to work with the color pigment that doesn't have any glow powder in it i hope you enjoyed making this one as much as i did thanks so much for watching
