so this is a video i wish i did at the beginning of 2020 because all the video conferencing zoom videos uh but this video i want to talk about how to put together a really cool creative split screen effect for all your videos so you can showcase all the videos that you need to just in one composition hey what's going on internet this is josh noel from sun duck film welcome to our channel if you're new here be sure to hit that subscribe button hope everyone's doing excellent today so the split screen effect is something that can be easily put together in premiere pro or another video editor however i just love after effects and i don't like doing any of that stuff in premiere pro because you have so much more control in after effects to put together a really cool split screen effect so you can do whatever you want we're going to go through these techniques so you can create any split screen effect you want to do all right there's a few different ways to do the split screen effect as you see we have a very nice unique look and then you know we come over here to a more of a four stack split screen so you're gonna be able to create any split screen that you want let's go ahead and get started so here we are in tutorial composition and we have nothing in here the first thing you want to do is not bring in your video what i suggest doing is lay out the i guess the board the split screen before you put the video in there it's very easy how you do this so what we'll do is go to layer new solid and i'm going to call this matte one and click ok and all we're going to do is maybe scale this down hit us on keyboard for scale and scale this down to kind of where we want our first video to be so maybe we want our first video to look like this you know uh we want this to take the size of the video and when this is in place you know we want to create some side video here what we can do is take this layer and go to edit duplicate we'll hit p iron keyboard for position and we can just bring the x position over here and this will be another spot or slot for a video and then we can take this duplicate it hit and bring it over to the other side all right and if you want you can set up the top part so once again we'll just take one these will duplicate it bring it to the top and we'll scale this up to be a little bit larger this duplicated mat and i'm going to position this one here at the top and it doesn't matter it's going outside of the composition that's totally fine it doesn't matter we seem to get this laid out and then we can duplicate this again and position this over to the other side and then to finish off our composition i'll take these two and i'll duplicate them and bring them downward here to create this alright perfect so now we have the ability to bring in our video now very easily just kind of drag and drop all right i'm gonna go ahead and bring in my very first video i'm gonna put underneath the first mat here and i'm gonna come here the track map you don't see track matt you can toggle switch the modes until you see it and so the track map for the video layer to alpha matte and then you can answer your keyboard for scaling you can scale down your video to fit exactly how you want and you'll see that you'll still have those gaps there uh and that looks great so now we can go through this and start adding more videos uh into our work here so i'll come here and bring in this video underneath matt 2 set it to alpha matte and i can scale it down and move it into place and there we have it all right i went ahead and finished out our entire split screen here by using those alpha maps for all these video layers so as you can see you can create a really unique layout no matter what you want to do but a couple techniques here obviously you're going to want to talk about animating this and also talk about the background so you can create a new background go to layer new solid and i do want to stay with the black background for this but you can change this to any color you want i'm going to do an off black background a little bit darker gray there and put it at the bottom everything um and i think that looks fine now let's talk about animation so there's two ways to animate your split screen all right i'm going to show you the clean way first so what you want to do is grab your mat layer and the video layer along with that matte so you see this is the middle here and go to layer pre-compose and i'm going to call it matte one or whatever click okay and then i'm going to want to follow that for each of the video and matte layers we'll have a total of seven mattes here so i'm gonna go ahead and do that pre-compose everything so i have everything pre-composed here nice and clean we know what is what so to do this what i'm gonna do is grab to our first layer and we do some basic transform animation so i'll hit s on my keyboard for scale add a keyframe for that i'll move that keyframe forward maybe by 11 frames and set the scale down to zero percent i can set those keyframes to easy easy keyframes writing f9 on my keyboard and now we'll have our first video anime in there then for example we can take our next two mats here on the side and hit piano keyboard for position add a keyframe for those and move them forward and time by a little bit and i can have these kind of just be underneath our original video here so i'll move this over to the left and also move the other one over uh to the right and simply i can take these two layers put underneath map one and bring in the end points for both of these layers and we'll make those last keyframes easy ease keyframes biting f9 on our keyboard and now we'll have this very nice smooth animation and we can build this out with rest of our mattes and when you're happy for animation make sure you turn on motion blur for your layers the mixture is turned on right there and how i finished this out was very simple you have those techniques to be able to animate those in any way that you want now another technique to do your animation uh instead of pre-composing everything you can be a little bit more dynamic so if you want you can grab just your video layers so for example i come here and add my keyframe for my position and move that keyframe forward and then you know i can have this go completely off the screen or below the screen like this and that will just animate upwards so that's also how you can do it but you know you can do any layout and animate it in any way that you want and that was the point of tutorials to show you how you can do a really cool split screen effect here inside of after effects and to close out this video i want to give a huge shout out to our 1400 plus motion
