it's August of 2020 a bunch of stuff is going on in the outside world and Kyle Lewis is the biggest name in baseball he was first called up in September of 2019 and he immediately thrived in 18 games he had a 128 WRC plus and six homers he end Seal's cleanup Spa opening day and it was very apparent why oh boy that must take that's gone see you later the next day he did it again ball hit well to right got carry there it goes six straight multi games after that put his season Ops over 1100 at the end of July he was hitting 450 500 600 and he wasn't done here three hits in a hom r on August 10th three for four with a homer on August 17 three for three with two walks on August 22nd and a 166 WRC plus through the first two months at the end of August he led the American League at F War even though his backat cooled significantly in September he was named Al Rookie of the Year and it was a no-brainer he even received Al MVP votes this season had CL fans certain that he was their center fielder of the future didn't happen though even though he was pretty good again in 2021 his season ended abruptly when he TOS miniscus this took his defensive base running from an asset to a massive liability he came back in May of 2022 and actually looked good to start out hitting two homers and collecting four hits in his first four games then he got concuss after this hit by pitch Lewis has never been the same since he struggled massively the rest of 2022 with Seattle and in 2023 with Arizona and that's his story as of this point he is currently a free agan it's very possible that he could have been one of the best outfielders in baseball long term if he had stayed healthy the talent was very apparent but his 2020 season should not be forgotten it was an incredible display of a tremendous player USA Kikuchi in 2019 and 2020 was a slightly below average Southpaw heading into 2021 he was a 30-year-old Lefty that hadn't put an above average season but things started to change after briefly struggling he turned around with an incredible start against Houston he took a no hitter into the seventh against a very good Astros offense and he really turned it on as spring turned the summer a 338 ER in May after taking a no hitter into the sixth against Toronto and his June was straight up Elite after his seventh win of the Season he had an a of around three and a 195 batting average against he was an Allstar it looked like the Mariners had found a Hidden Gem of a lefty Ace but there was a catch these numbers weren't sustainable his opponents had a 221 batting average on balls in play and he stranded 83% of Runners on base his 2020 run ra after this was 6.22 his b up against almost doubled and his left on base percentage decreased by 15% I will say that Kikuchi like Lewis is a good player in fact he's becoming a really damn good pitcher for the Blue Jays but his Seattle tenure deserves more recognition than it gets without him the Mariners have no chance of coming as close to the postseason in 2021 as they did I don't know if a lot of people remember this one prior to the 2019 season Daniel vogle back was a 600 Ops first base SL DH heading into 2019 nobody really knew vogle back had a role on the team he was used for a few pinch hit opportunities against right-handed pitching in the first two games his first full game was 0 for three with two walks not ideal but after this vogle back went on a tear two hits in a Solo shot against La another solo shot the next day two bombs the day after that and another solo shot the day after that two multi-hit games and another Homer over the next few weeks kept a season Ops has over 1,300 and then he fed the Angels once again Drive deep to right calhon going back gone boogy deep drive that baby's long gone wow over his first 15 full games vogle SL 35500 900 with eight homers and walking as much as he struck out he led the Al and WRC plus and April and only Trail Cody Bellinger in all of MLB of course these stats were nowhere close to sustainable Vogal back's bat did cool down after that but he had 22 more homers on the season to give him 30 on the year he was also an Allstar but his 2020 was a Bible in 64 play appearances with Seattle he h under 100 and was DFA but he's still around in baseball today he had his career year in 2022 and has been an above average Lefty platoon bet ever since he starting to get a decent role on the Blue Jays this year but fog's instain start to 2019 deserves some more love than it gets Mike Zunino was the third overall pick in the 2012 draft he worked his way through the miners and was Seattle's primary catcher in 2014 and 2015 he brought a lot of value with his awesome defense but he couldn't hit he had a 70 WRC plus between those two years and hit under 200 he spent most of 2016 in Triple A but when he played heit well he struggled to start out 2017 though at the end of May he was once again under the Mendoza Line and had a 55 WRC plus but he had three multi-hit games to end May and that led to the best stretch of his career on June 3rd he drove in seven runs with a homer and a double and never looked back from June 3rd to the end of the year he HED 24 times slug nearly 600 and had a 150 WRC Plus in that time frame his 4. 4 F War ranked 11th out of all position players in MLB ranking ahead of Francisco Lindor Cory Seager and Mookie Betts he was also baseball's most valuable catcher in that time frame and almost a full win over the next closest Gary Sanchez despite that Zunino never really was the same after this he only had one more good season after this with Tampa in 2021 Zunino just announced his retirement earlier this year even though he wasn't the most consistent on offense he still accomplished much more than I will be the most 18.3 F4 is nothing to scoff at congrats on a great career Mike the 2023 Mariners were a mediocre team until mid July they went from hovering around 500 to the AL West leaders in just over a month and a half during this stretch their best hitter wasn't the scorching hot Julio Rodriguez or JP Crawford or Cal Raleigh or Tom Murphy or Mike Ford or aeno Suarez it was super utility player Dylan Moore for years Moore was a slightly worse than average hitter but he began to figure it out in 2022 with a 126 WRC plus but he had an injury that forced him to Miss April and May of 2023 when he came back in June he was terrible in his first 17 games he hit 063 and no joke had a WRC plus of one one Seattle fans knew that he was a much better hit than that but they didn't know that Moore was about to come up the best hitter on the Mariners in 79 play appearances after that horrible start Moore had a 198 WRC plus the only guy with more plate appearances and a higher WRC plus during this span was Mooky bets six homers and 12 extra base hits in just 20 games played in this span he had a barrel rate over 20% and he was worth 1.2 F War what was so weird about moris run is that came immediately after massive slump and then immediately after the run came another massive slump in Moore's final 56 play appearances of 2023 he did not Homer and had a WRC plus of 40 he was five times worse of a hitter than he was just one month prior more streakiness has continued so far in 2024 but his true Talent level probably lies somewhere between these two stretches most likely closer to what we've seen this year than during any stretch of 2023
