[Music] welcome to the study of John I'm an white and today we're gonna be talking about chapter 19 in the Gospel of John in our last lesson we saw a very somber chapter in chapter 18 a chapter where Jesus was arrested betrayed by Judas taken into custody denied by Peter and then sentenced by Caiaphas the high priest and sent over to the Roman governor Pilate Pilate questioned Jesus and we saw at the very end of that chapter that Pilate came before the people his accusers and said I don't find this man guilty of any crime but since its Passover as tradition would have it Pilate said I will release this prisoner back to you and they said not this one they didn't want Jesus back they said give us another prisoner and they took Barabbas Jesus then is still in the custody of the Roman governor Pilate as we open up this nineteenth chapter but as we get into this chapter I want you to see that just as every other chapter of John we can equally divide this chapter into several different accounts so the first thing we're going to see as we get into chapter 19 is that Jesus is sentenced to be crucified he's sentenced to death then after we get through the part of his sentencing and abuse we get to the actual crucifixion and picking up in chapter I mean in verse 16 we're gonna see the crucifixion account in verse 28 we're gonna see the actual death where Jesus says it is finished and that carries through the crucifixion and then we'll see in the very last verses of this chapter the burial of Jesus and so let's get started let's dig in so as we open up this chapter we have Pilate who's just been told the people I find this man not guilty you can have him released and they said no no no in this very first verse we see Pilate has Jesus flogged with a lead tipped whip has him beaten the soldiers have woven a crown of thorns placed it on his head and then they've also put a purple robe on him to mock him as King of the Jews now most theologians believe that the reason that Pilate had Jesus brutalized had him beaten had him abused was because he firmly believed he was beginning to believe that this man is the king of the Jews this man may actually be the Son of God and if he is then Who am I to judge him because I'll be held accountable so we kind of see that as we go through this chapter we saw it some in chapter 18 we're gonna see it more in this chapter so Pilate has him beaten they mock him they slap his face and then Pilate goes back outside again to the people and he says to the people I'm going to bring this man back out to you but I want you to understand this is verse 4 clearly I find him not guilty so Jesus comes out wearing his crown of thorns the purple robe and Pilate says here is your man but when they saw him the leading priests and the temple guards in verse 6 began shouting crucify him crucify him it wasn't enough that Jesus was beaten they wanted him crucified it wasn't enough that he be brutalized shamed and hurt they wanted him done away with completely and is that not the case in many cases today I mean often we see that it's not enough for unbelievers to simply want Jesus out of their schools out of their neighborhoods out of their government buildings they want him crucified all over again they're angry and this is exactly what was going on back in this scene these people simply because they don't believe he's the son of God they weren't him done away with so they cry out crucify him crucify him and Pilate says take him yourself and crucify him but the Jews Jewish leaders replied it is our law that he must die because he called himself the Son of God now that goes back to Leviticus 24:16 in their law it said anyone who claims to be the Son of God should be crucified and that's what they want when Pilate heard this verse 8 he was more frightened than ever when he hears that Jesus has claimed to be the son of God John tells us he was frightened why else would he be frightened if he didn't have a reason to believe he's been in the presence of God in the flesh and I believe that Pilate believes that Jesus is who he says he is so he takes Jesus back into his headquarters where are you from who are you but Jesus didn't answer him this time Jesus was quiet and Pilate says why don't you talk to me don't you realize that I had the power to release you to save you from being crucified and verse 11 Jesus says you would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you by the father Jesus knows who's in control he knows if God wants this to end God will allow it in but Jesus also knows being God in the flesh he knows why God sent him here he knows that he's the Good Shepherd he knows that he came to lay his life down for his sheep so Pilate tried again to release him in verse 12 and he's tried over and we see it repeated over and over again Pilate wants to release this man but the Jewish leaders continue to shout if you release this man you are no friend to Caesar now they're threatening Pilate that you're gonna have to answer for this because you're not gonna be a friend of Caesar now if you release this man so now Pilate has another dilemma to make so when they said this verse 13 Pilate brought Jesus out to them again he sat on the judgment platform and he said look here is your king away with him they yelled the people are still yelling crucify him and Pilate says one more time crucify your king and they say the people say we have no king but Caesar and that was the leading priest then Pilate turns Jesus over to be crucified so here's the trial before Pilate he tried several times to release Jesus the people cry out crucify him and if you don't crucify him if you don't send it's him to death then you're no friend of Caesar so Pilate says okay crucify him and in verse 17 it says carrying the cross by himself he went to a public place called skull Hill the place of the skull and in Hebrew that's Golgotha two others are crucified with him all gospel accounts say that there were two others crucified with him and then Pilate posts a sign above the cross that read Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews now the Jewish leaders protested they said you need to change that sign it needs to say that he claimed he was king of the Jews but Pilate said no I've written what I've written it is what it is Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews when the soldiers had crucified Jesus they divided his clothes now this is in verse 23 and John goes on to tell us that this fulfilled scripture that says in Psalm 22 18 they divided my garments among themselves and threw dice for my clothing Jesus's mother and his sister his mother's sister and then Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene were all there at the crucifixion and when Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple whom Jesus loved now we've heard that term from John in one of our previous chapters we hear it again here there's a disciple that it is that is titled the disciple that Jesus loved he's known for that and he's standing beside Mary Jesus's mother and Jesus says to her dear woman here is your son and he said to this disciple here is your mother and then from then on the disciple took Mary into his home and cared for her now Jesus had others but if we remember from our previous chapters his brothers were not followers they were not believers at this point in time Mary had followed her son throughout this entire gospel account throughout his ministry and now she's before the cross and her other sons are not there and Jesus turns her over to his beloved disciple so now we get to this next section in verse 28 jesus knew that his mission was now finished and in order to fulfill Scripture before he passes he says I'm thirsty and then they bring him the vinegar soaked on a sponge and put it to his lips and that fulfills the prophecy in Psalm 69 21 and then Jesus taste it and he says it is finished he has done what the father has told him to do then he bowed his head and he gave up his spirit it was not taken from him Jesus never denied who he was he spoke boldly lovingly and clearly said who he was and he took the cup that the father had for him the soldiers in verse 32 came to break the legs of the men who were crucified with Jesus now this was a common practice but when they came to Jesus they saw that he was already dead so they did not break his legs one of the soldiers however pierced his side with a spear and immediately blood and water flowed out and now in verse 35 John tells us this this report is from an eyewitness giving an accurate account he speaks the truth why so that you may continue to believe John tells us right here he's giving you the truth it's an eyewitness account he was there at the crucifixion he's telling us the details why that we will continue to believe verse 36 these things happened in fulfillment of the scriptures that say not one of his bones will be broken and they will look on the one they pierced now we come to this final section of this chapter the burial of Jesus afterward Joseph of Arimathea who had been a secret disciple of Jesus asked Pilate for permission to lay his body in a tomb let me take Jesus's body down and when Pilate gave permission Joseph came and took the body away Nicodemus came with him and Nicodemus brought 75 pounds of perfumed pointment following the burial custom they wrapped Jesus body in the spices and in linen cloth at the place of the crucifixion it was near a garden in this new tomb that had never been used before and because it was the day of preparation for the Passover and since the tomb was close at hand they laid Jesus there and that brings us to this account Jesus has tried Jesus's sentence Jesus is crucified and Jesus is buried that hour had come the hour that God sent Jesus to earth for the hour for him to be glorified this King of the Jews Pilate put a sign above his head Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews he willingly gave himself Jesus willingly gave himself over to crucifixion let's ask ourselves what is the timeless life lesson that we learn Jesus gives us the promise of eternal life through his sacrifice he shed his blood the sacrificial lamb for our freedom from condemnation and from our sin and the question for us today is do we believe do we receive or are we a secret disciple of Jesus like Joseph of Arimathea was are we willing to step forward and fully believe and receive the gift that Christ has given us and received that we have no longer condemnation I pray that you will receive this powerful message and that you will take it to heart and you will glorify and honor God for the sacrifice he's given for you we have two more chapters ago I pray that you'll be with me as we close out this amazing gospel account god bless you and have a great day [Music]
