hi guys welcome back to my channel today i'm going to share to you the cost of living in new zealand maharana bama mohai is a new zealand is it expensive to live in new zealand how much will you need to earn in order to survive how expensive is a good lifestyle will earning minimum wage be able to support a family all of these questions i'm going to answer in this video so be sure to watch until the end this video is in collaboration with the fateful duo there are also a couple living in christchurch new zealand and they also made a video on the cost of living in christchurch so after watching this video make sure you go to their channel and watch their video to compare the cost of living in christchurch from auckland hi guys if you're new here i'm trisha i make cleaning organizing and lifestyle videos and sometimes i post vlogs too and today i'm going to share to you the cost of living in new zealand but before that i'm going to give a disclaimer first so the prices that i will be giving you may not be the exact prices but these are just the rough estimates the computation for the cost of living is affected by many different factors and one of them is geography new zealand being located in the farther south of the globe makes it hard to transport goods and products from different countries it has only less than 5 million people and there are far less companies located in new zealand making these companies have less competition and therefore they tend to charge even more so in new zealand these are the top three cities first one is auckland with a population of close to 1.5 million people the next two are wellington and christchurch and both of them have approximately 400 000 people but the main focus of this video is in auckland first because i live in auckland second because auckland has the most number of population or most number of people therefore most people tend to visit or live here third is because most immigrants live in auckland fourth because auckland is the center of commerce in new zealand so i have divided a computation for the cost of living into seven parameters the first one is housing or renting cost the second one is household contents the third one is utilities the fourth one is food and groceries fifth we have clothing and footwear and six healthcare and the last one will be leisure let's start with housing or renting cost so there are also different factors in housing or renting costs and of course the number one factor for that is the location the second one is of course the type of house that you are buying or renting and the third one is the size of the house you can either choose to live in a one bedroom house two bedroom four bedroom and so on so the cheapest cost for a one bedroom house if you're going to buy it is around 500 000 new zealand dollars for a two bedroom house the range is around 500 to 800 000 and if you want a four or more bedroom house the cost would be around more than one million new zealand dollars the farther you are from the city the less expensive the house is so if you're going to buy a house there are also other costs that you have to consider the first one is very important this is the house insurance so house insurance is a must and your home loan won't be finalized if you don't have this the second one is contents insurance for the contents insurance the full cover option will be able to repair or replace most of your household items regardless of age of the items up to the amount you choose to insure them for if you can't afford to buy a house yet renting or flooding is very common in new zealand the cheapest cost for a one bedroom apartment is around 300 to 400 new zealand dollars for a two bedroom apartment it's around 450 to 500 even up to 600 and for a four bedroom or more apartment the cost would be eight hundred dollars up to more than a thousand dollars also commonly rent is paid weekly in new zealand so if for example the cost of rent listed for a 2 bedroom apartment is 500 then it means that you have to pay 500 a week summing up to 2 000 a month next i'm going to discuss to you the fees which you need to pay when you are renting so aside from the weekly rent landlords also ask for a rent in advance also aside from the rented advance you are also required to give a bond what happens to the bond money landlords must lodge it with the tenancy services within 23 days and the latter will hold your bond money until the end of your tenancy what is the bond money for so the bond money is security for the landlord whenever you leave the apartment with unpaid rent or damages that may need fixing so there are other fees involved in renting an apartment the first one is the option fees so this is to hold the property while you're still thinking if you're going to rent it or not and if you agree the landlord should give you back the money by putting it towards your rent the option fee should not be more than one week's rent and the other fee is the latin fees and key money these are additional fees that can't be charged to the tenants if you don't want to rent a house on your own you should probably consider flattening flatting is very common for solo immigrants flatting is sharing a house with one or more people these people can be anyone like your friends workmates or even strangers for the cost of flatting first it depends on how big the house is you can rent a four bedroom house which costs around 800 new zealand dollars per week and then split it up with four people so you get to pay 200 each per week second is it also depends on the location of the property so if you're closer to the city then it's going to be more expensive and lastly it depends on how many people you're sharing the house with you and your flatmates can also agree with what else you wanted to share with them like buying groceries utilities and the like i want to quickly discuss transportation too since i forgot to include this in the parameters if you're visiting new zealand or probably planning to live here it's important to know the public transport system in the country major cities like auckland and wellington have city suburban rail services this means that you can also choose to ride a train in order to get from one suburb to another within the city the good thing is all of the cities and most towns in new zealand have buses but the bad thing about this is that new zealand has limited public transport across different towns in north and south island that's why most of the kiwis prefer to buy a car most public transport users use an 80 hop card it's a prepay smart card which you can use for buses trains and even ferries around auckland you can top up the card and sometimes a free ride can be offered even a discount if you use this card one bus ride within auckland city center would cost around 55 cents if you're using a hop card and around one dollar if you're using cash point-to-point location is called a zone and one zone would cost around two dollars if you're using a hop card and three dollars and fifty cents if you're using cash if you notice it's more expensive to use cash so if you're a frequent public transport traveler you should consider buying a hop card for more discounts traveling for more than one zone will also not necessarily cost two dollars per zone if you're traveling for two zones it would cost three dollars and fifty five cents and so on it is important to note that there are no individual boss or train rides longer than five zones the good thing is you can use your google maps to know which boss is appropriate for your travel if you don't want the hassle of public transport you can also rent a car to use for your visit in new zealand there are a lot of car renting companies which you can search online before heading to new zealand i'll discuss the fuel or petrol cost later on in this video to give you an idea on how much you will be spending on your travel if you'll be here for a longer period of time then you should probably consider buying a car like i've said most kiwis prefer owning a car to use for transport it's very common to buy second-hand cars in new zealand they are way less cheaper and more common to see in the streets than you think you can buy the second-hand cars from licensed motor vehicle dealers and the cheapest car that you can buy in new zealand would cost around three thousand dollars they are typically hatchback or four-seater cars usually great for a small family a couple or a single person now we're on to the second parameter which is household contents most of the apartments or houses in new zealand are unfurnished so you really have to buy your own furniture and appliances a top load washing machine would cost around 700 to 1000 new zealand or more front load washing machine would cost around 1 000 to 3 000 new zealand dollars or more as for the tv a 32 inch flat screen tv would cost around 300 to 500 new zealand dollars and the most expensive would cost around more than 1 000 new zealand dollars for a 49 inch to 50 inch flat screen tv these would cost around 1 000 to 1500 new zealand dollars a single door fridge would cost around one thousand to two thousand new zealand dollars a fridge freezer would cost around one thousand to two thousand new zealand dollars a french door or side by side fridge would cost around two thousand to five thousand new zealand dollars the good news is most people buy second-hand appliances here in new zealand it is very common around here you can buy these second-hand items on trademe facebook marketplace or op shops the third parameter is utilities there are a lot of electricity providers in new zealand there are over 30 distributors operating in exclusive geographical areas across new zealand you can choose according to the plan which is suitable to your needs like for example electric kiwi lets you nominate an hour of free power each day during off-peak times and the second one is you can choose payment options with these different providers you can either pay monthly weekly or fortnightly direct debit internet banking post shop use a check or via app in auckland you can either have a low user plan rate or the standard plan rate the second on this parameter is water unlike in electricity new zealand is only one water provider and that is water care this is our actual bill on electricity and water i have to say that there are four people living in this house so this is a major factor in energy and water consumption i also would like to emphasize that power or electricity rate is a lot higher during winter time in new zealand so the cost or the bill would be a lot higher too the third one is internet most draining flats provide free wi-fi as you can connect to the main family house or the landlord's wi-fi and that is actually our situation here in our house we don't have to pay for wi-fi anymore there are also a lot of internet providers in new zealand it all depends on your location to know the best internet provider suited for your needs you can go to the glimp website in this website you can choose your preferred connection by typing in your home address in order to check if your preferred internet connection is available in your area and then the website will give you the available internet providers with their internet plans and then you can choose which ones comfortable for your budget the fourth one is fuel or petrol there are at least 1300 available petrol stations here in new zealand of course fuel prices may vary across all new zealand it all depends on your location as of september 2020 petrol price is around two dollars for litter price changes from town to town and it's more likely that the petrol price is cheaper around major cities like auckland compared to those in further areas you can also get six cents off per liter of fuel voucher when you buy from supermarkets or you can get a card from caltex or bp which will give you six cents off for a 40 spend and these can also be accumulated the fifth one is mobile plan of course if you're new here in new zealand you have to know the best mobile plan provider according to the internet 2 degrees has the best unlimited mobile data plan some of the other mobile service providers are vodafone which is the only network which still offers the older 2g network and has also good coverage with its 3g and 4g network and spark where the coverage is limited with most of its coverage being through its 3g network now we're going to the fourth parameter which is food and groceries so i also separated these two i'm going to discuss first food so these are some of the most famous fast foods here in auckland mcdonald's or macca's as they call it here in new zealand is the number one fast food in new zealand as of 2018 a hamburger would cost around four dollars and ten cents a cheeseburger just the burger would cost around four dollars and sixty and a small coke would cost around three dollars and fifty cents in kfc an eight piece colonel's dinner would cost around 29.99 and for a subway sandwich a foot long would cost around 12 dollars to dollars and the subway six inch width cost around seven dollars and fifty cents to ten dollars and seventeen cents as for restaurants one of the most expensive restaurants here in auckland is the siddharth a main dish in this restaurant would cost around 45 dollars and of course one of our favorite restaurants this is the gangnam style which you can find in takapuna or in manukau you can enjoy a buffet meal here for just 25 dollars per person as for the groceries our monthly spend as a couple is ranging around 600 to 700 new zealand dollars this includes food cleaning supplies hygiene products which we need in this house if you want to know the grocery prices here in new zealand i have already made a lot of grocery haul videos which you can watch on my channel i've already created a playlist for that the fifth one is clothing and footwear some of the low-cost clothing stores are the warehouse and kmart you can buy the cheapest clothes here ranging from five dollars to 30 dollars one of the cheapest shoe stores is number one shoes they offer a lot of deals like buying a second pair of shoes at a cheaper price [Music] and of course one of my favorite low-cost clothing stores clothes from cotton on would also range from around 5 to 30 or more than fifty dollars new zealand's public health system is subsidized by the government you can enjoy this if you are a new zealand citizen resident of new zealand and third one if you have a valid work visa for more than two years new zealand also has acc or the accident compensation corporation acc is a government agency which provides personal injury cover for all new zealand residents and visitors to new zealand including those with work visa for less than two years as for the doctor's visit it costs forty five dollars to sixty dollars for an adult and free for children under age thirteen it costs around five dollars for a prescription in a pharmacy and it costs around 70 to 150 dollars for a dentist checkup for an adult as for leisure one of the top things to do is to watch a movie a ticket movie would normally cost around 20 dollars and it all depends on the movie that you're watching let's start with the computation if you're living on your own let's say you are flatting because you don't want to live in an apartment on your own plus it would be way less cheaper if you share rent expense with other people so your cost for flatting is around 200 per week of course if you have to buy your own grocery items like chips hygiene products and the like it would probably cost around 100 per week let's say you eat out like two times a week and let's say you love eating korean food and you love to visit the korean buffet restaurant which would cost around 25 for a single person and then sometimes you would go to maccas for a burger meal about ten dollars this would probably cost you around forty dollars per week let's say you only buy your clothes in the warehouse and number one shoes you can already buy about four pairs of jeans in 100 or 5-10 t-shirts for the same budget in these stores it would probably cost you about a hundred dollars a month or 25 dollars per week now let's say you only watch the big screen worthy movies about twice a month or probably less this would cost you 50 a month or 12.50 a week and of course in order for you to get to work let's say you spend about five dollars per day on public transport and let's say you get out of your flat six days a week so you'll probably spend 30 dollars a week on transportation now i didn't include healthcare in computing the weekly cost because most probably you'll visit your doctor only when something bad happens to you or whenever you feel sick your weekly total expense would be 475 dollars and let's say you're earning a minimum rate and you work 40 hours per week which is the normal working hours you'll earn about 756 dollars per week but of course you'll have to consider the income taxes roughly you'll be left around with 620 now this is just a rough estimate and will not probably be your exact take-home pay but let's say that's your take-home pay from your minimum wage job and if we last your weekly expenses then you'll be left with 212 per week or 848 dollars a month which is not bad at all but of course there may be other things that you might want to buy for yourself or other expenses that i did not include in this computation as well like the mobile data plan which may cost around 80 dollars per month and utilities like power and water costs but in conclusion to this computation if you're willing to live a low-cost life in auckland then you can survive here with a minimum wage job let's move on to the computation for the cost of living of a family with two children and both the parents have a minimum wage job let's see if they can survive in auckland the average two-bedroom house would cost around six hundred dollars per week to accommodate the family let's say they spend 150 dollars per week for groceries and one meal for the whole family would probably cost about 80 dollars and let's say they eat out just once a week now say they only buy clothes from warehouse or other low-cost shops about once every two months and they spend around two hundred dollars which would cost them 25 dollars a week and they go to the movies about once a month and it would cost 100 for the whole family or 25 a week and let's say they own a second-hand car and they pay 40 a week or 160 a month for the mortgage of course they have to fill the tank of the car with petrol or fuel and they spend 100 a week for it the total weekly expense for this family would be 1100 new zealand dollars take note that i haven't included yet the utilities cost and mobile plans cost per each member of the family and other extra expenses now let's say both the parents earn a minimum wage and they work 40 hours each per week their total weekly income would be 1512 let's not forget about the income taxes which is pretty high in new zealand let's say they're left with our previous rough estimate of 620 dollars each or a combined net income of 1240 if we less their weekly expenses they're left with only 140 dollars a week or 560 dollars a month this amount would be left to pay for power and water cost and mobile plans and other miscellaneous expense which they need to pay so in conclusion the parents should probably consider earning more in order to fully meet their family's needs at least one of them should earn a higher income or if possible both of the parents should because let's not forget their kids should also go to school and there are also other expenses related to that now this is my computation for a good quality of life in auckland let's say you are single and you want to live on your own in a one bedroom apartment in the central business district in auckland or the auckland cbd the average rent would cost five hundred dollars you spend 150 on grocery and another 150 dollars for eating out about three times a week in medium cost restaurants you spend about 200 every month on clothing and food to wear and you buy from medium cost shops like h m zara and the like let's say you only go to the movies about once a month since you also have netflix and other video streaming platforms in your apartment lastly for transportation let's say you own a 10 000 second hand car which would cost roughly around 45 dollars per week your total weekly cost would be 987.50 a medium high paying job in auckland would be around more than 100 000 a year let's say you earn 110 000 annually less taxes your take-home pay would be around 1 500 new zealand dollars per week if we last your weekly expense you'll be left with around 500 or two thousand dollars a month take note that i have not included yet the monthly subscriptions power water and mobile costs but 2000 a month is not bad at all the overall conclusion to this is that living in auckland would need a high paying job or higher earnings in order for you or your whole family to live comfortably the trade-off in living in auckland is that you are at the center of commerce in new zealand and if you are an immigrant most of the job opportunities are in auckland [Music] so there you have it guys and i hope i've answered all of your
